Soulfly plays Nailbomb at Tampa Show

Those who follow closely the career of Brazilian Metal icon, Max Cavalera, know that Nailbomb's "Point Blank" (his album collaboration with Fudge Tunnel's Alex Newport) probably is one of the most in-your-face recordings the legendary musician has ever produced. That's why Soulfly's current American tour is so historically-poignant. The Cavalera's fronted band is playing the aforementioned 1994 classic album in its entirety. Of course, this is a reason to rejoice.

Soulfly—along with fellow openers Lody Kong and Harm's Way—visited one of Tampa Bay's premier music venues, The Orpheum, on November 1. They played "Point Blank" from start to finish, castigating the audience with classic Nailbomb fare like the rabid "Wasting Away," "24 Hour Bullshit", "Vai Toma No Cú" and "Cockroaches," among many others.

Even if the crowd was modest in numbers—let's remember that it happened on a week day, just after Halloween—the response of those present was tremendously energetic. Cavalera commanded the show with his down-to-earth-yet-larger-than-life stage persona. Song after song, he and his band kept everyone on edge, chanting, moshing, singing along and living the mayhem. No doubt, this Brazilian icon and his comrades still are at the top of their musical powers.

During that night at the Orpheum, Soulfly managed to perfectly channel "Point Blank's" sonic panache. They delivered the most punishing Metal performances witnessed by a Tampa Bay audience this year. If Soulfly visits your town during the remaining dates of this tour, make sure to go and see it. You will be blown away—Nailbomb style.

Soulfly Kicks Off Tour October 6th

Metal legend Max Cavalera created a massive buzz earlier this year after hinting about Soulfly's North American Point Blank tour, and now the wait is over. Soulfly will begin the highly-anticipated tour this Friday, October 6th in San Diego, CA. Each night on the tour, the iconic top-charting band - featuring Max Cavalera on vocals and guitar, Mike Leon on bass and backing vocals, renowned guitarist Marc Rizzo on leads, and Zyon Cavalera (also of support group Lody Kong) on drums and percussion - will perform Nailbomb's classic full-length album, "Point Blank," in full.

Sunday Old School: Soulfly

Revenge is a motivation that's created some of the biggest moments in history, as well as many famous names in pop culture. Were Bruce Wayne not spurred on by the death of his parents (spoiler,) he wouldn't have become Batman and in a world closer to our own, we wouldn't have Megadeth if Dave Mustaine hadn't been kicked out of Metallica and sworn to create a faster, heavier and more intense group. Similarly, after the decision made by three of the four Sepultura members to fire their manager, her husband, the group's leader, Max Cavalera, quit the group and almost immediately founded a new one. One which has rivaled the commercial success of his previous outfit. One named, Soulfly.

Soulfly began life in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona, where Max Cavalera and his wife Gloria had made their home. In addition to dealing with the split with Sepultura, Gloria's son, Dana, who was also a close friend of Max, had been murdered the previous year and as expected, left the couple with a feeling of total devastation. Inspired by a line in the Deftones song, "Head Up," on which Cavalera appeared, he named his new group Soulfly and recruited Lúcio Maia on guitar, bassist Cello Dias, who had previously played with another Sepultura alumnus, Jairo Guedes back in Brazil and drummer Roy Mayorga, formerly of the crust punk band Nausea and Hare Krishna hardcore group, Shelter.
