Revolver Magazine is pleased to reveal an excerpt from The Ocean's "Pelagial" DVD. Check it out below.
The dramatic DVD, which is being screened as live video projections during the band's current "Pelagial" world tour, is a conceptual movie by Craig Murray, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Converge, and others. This movie, which offers up a year's worth of meticulous shooting, cutting and editing, visualizes the journey into the depths and completes the holistic music and visual art project that defines the "Pelagial" concept.
The film is inundated with spectacular oceanic footage, parts of which The Ocean's own Robin Staps, an avid scuba diver, filmed himself in Australia. In addition, "Pelagial" features a female protagonist (who ironically goes by the name of "Arielle" in real life). The girl is seen enduring various stages of fear, lust, terror, pain and joy, as she sinks towards the inscrutable depths of the Hadopelagic zone at the end of the album, and metaphorically, deeper and deeper into the depths of her own psyche.
Comments Robin Staps: "The album concept follows two separate but related strains: One is the obvious journey from the surface towards the depths of the sea, crossing the five Pelagial depth zones. The second one is loosely based on Andrey Tarkowsky's movie Stalker, which is also a journey through zones, but an inward journey, form the surface into the depths of the human psyche, towards the origins of our wishes and desires. This is the central theme that the lyrics of the album are orbiting around. The Pelagial movie takes up themes from and makes reference to both of these conceptual strains, and fuses them together, in an abstract, artistic way." More...

The Ocean is currently out on the Summer Slaughter tour, but the band will be missing tonight's stop. The band has issued the following statement about the situation:
"The Ocean will not play the Myrtle Beach Summer Slaughter show today.
"Our drummer Luc woke up this morning with his foot twice as wide as it's long... turns out that he's caught gout. I thought this was something that only grandmothers get, but apparently you can get it at any age, from eating bad food and drinking too much. And he's had heaps of both the last few days...
"We apologize to the people who came out to see us tonight, trust me if we could, we would play, but there is nothing we can do right now, he's been fed a cocktail of steroids, but he still can't even walk.
"Fingers crossed that a he will be alright tomorrow again." More...
The Ocean is currently making its way through North America as part of the seventh annual Summer Slaughter Tour, performing in support of latest album "Pelagial" (reviewed here).
The progressive sound contortionists are leveling stages nightly alongside the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, Revocation, Aeon and more.
Founding guitarist Robin Staps comments of the trek: "Summer Slaughter has been a blast so far… we struggled with some technical issues in the beginning and, and finding a setup/routine that works within those 10 minutes changeovers wasn't easy, but we're there now, and have been thoroughly enjoying the past few shows. More good stuff to come!"
The Ocean has added a number of last minute U.S. headlining shows on the Summer Slaughter off days which include performances in Hartford, Omaha, and Vancouver as well as a very special meet & greet on August 6 in Brooklyn, New York at Saint Vitus Bar.
Elaborates Staps: "On August 6th, we will all be hanging out at Saint Vitus bar in Brooklyn, where we played a great show in 2011 with support from Pelagic Records recording artists Family, and The Binary Code, as some of you may remember. We are stoked to see these two awesome bands perform at Saint Vitus Bar again, as well as Black Table. Rumors have it that there is this band called "Pelagial" playing as well, we're very curious to find out what that is all about… we will all be there to sign whatever stuff you bring, preferably foreheads, melons or live animals, so come say hi if you're from the NYC area!" German progressive act The Ocean released a new music video for the track "Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams." The song appears on the band's latest LP "Pelagial" (reviewed here), which is available now through Metal Blade Records.
The video was directed by Alexander Kraudelt and Lukas Hambach, produced by Frameshock, with additional visuals by Craig Murray. Guitarist and founding member Robin Staps commented: "This clip is blending performance footage with excerpts from Craig Murray's 'Pelagial' movie, which was released along with the limited edition CD and vinyl boxset versions of the album. We've never really done a clip like that before, but it was great fun making this."

"Pelagial" was written, recorded, mixed and to-be-performed-live as one single, 53-minute piece of music. Today, Pitchfork unveils "Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe," a track taken from The Ocean's forthcoming new studio recording, "Pelagial." Submerse yourself in ninth movement "Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe" at pitchfork.com here.
Metal Blade also comments: "A progressive audio voyage written, recorded, and to-be-performed-live as one single 53-minute piece of music, Pelagial was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden, and firmly stands as The Ocean's deepest, most challenging entry to their winding catalog of sound exploration. 'Pelagial' will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26th/29th (Europe) and April 30th (North America/world) through Metal Blade Records."
Guitarist Robin Staps relates: "My original plan was to write a stepless musical progression, like a continuous color blending from white to black. But I soon realized that it could not be that linear. It needed to stay interesting after all, and this is something that is usually best achieved by employing unforeseeable elements. In the end, any good idea must be put into perspective by its musical impact."
And so the listener will experience swirls and vertical currents while listening to the album; short, unexpected faster passages in between, sudden tempo changes that will make them feel like they're rising again for a short bit -- but the general direction remains very clear: "You can feel from the beginning, it's going down. Deeper and deeper." More...

Ash Avildsen, founder of Summer Slaughter, comments on this year's edition of the tour: “It's year seven and I think 2013's line-up is the most exciting and diverse yet. Slaughter has never been a one dimensional experience for fans. This year is a true testament to that as we have an amazing mix of extreme music's influential icons and leaders of the new school. Let the underground unite!"
Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist) states: “We can't wait to get back on the road! We're launching a US tour in the spring, hitting Europe for some festivals and club shows, and then hitting several more cities with Summer Slaughter all summer long. We are absolutely amped. After being holed up in the studio for such a long time giving birth to One of Us is the Killer, we are all pent up and ready to share material new and old with our supporters doing what we love to do the most. Can't wait to see and either kiss or rip off each and every one of your faces on the road with Summer Slaughter and year round, everywhere.”
In anticipation of upcoming new full-length, "Pelagial," today The Ocean posts the second in a series of studio video diaries. Check it out below. Metal Blade Records also comments on the album:
"Possibly their deepest and most profoundly sophisticated composition to date, Pelagial is a progressive musical journey written, recorded and to-be-performed-live as one, single, 53-minute piece of music. Mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden, the offering will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26th/29th (Europe) and April 30th (North America/world) through Metal Blade Records.
"The concept of the album is made evident in its title. Listeners will be further submersed as they journey with the band, beginning at the surface of the ocean and plunging through all five pelagic depth zones: epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic. As one continuous piece of music, Pelagial's tracks, or episodes, are connected by interludes of underwater sounds and samples taken from old submarine movies, which give the album a claustrophobic 'Das Boot'-kind of atmosphere."
"There are track marks, and there are actual songs built into this larger structure, but the whole album is a journey rather than a number of loose tracks… some riffs appear in the first two minutes of the album and then reappear thirty minutes later," details guitarist Robin Staps. It's an experience that will reward repeated listens. More...

"After 2 years of relentless touring in North America, Europe, Russia, China, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and Australia, The Ocean have resurfaced with what could be their deepest and most trailblazing piece of work to date, Pelagial: a progressive musical journey, written, recorded, mixed and to-be-performed-live as one single 53-minutes piece of music. The Ocean has checked in with the following recap of recent Australian tour dates and update about upcoming live shows:
"Farewell for awhile.... our Australian tour has concluded last Sunday with a final blast in Perth. It's been great times here on the other side of the globe, thanks to all our fans for coming out and making the shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth so very enjoyable and worthwhile. Thanks also to our brothers in Lo! - If you are Australian, you will have another chance to see them live soon, don't miss out, these guys kick tremendous amounts of ass!
"We are looking back at a crazy year of more or less constant touring: the US tour with BTBAM last April/May, the UK tour with Earthtone 9 immediately afterwards and Friction Tour in Europe with Red Fang and Intronaut; then Summer Festivals; then China and from China straight back to the US for the Devin Townsend tour; back to Europe for a co-headlining run with Textures in December 2011, and finally a month in Russia in February / March this year, followed by Thailand and Australia…
"Yes, we are tired! And that's why we are now going to disappear from your radars for a while now. We will be spending another week in this last city on the planet and our side project Coilguns (Luc, Louis and Jona) are playing a final gig here tomorrow at Beat Nightclub in Perth.
"Robin just bought an old van and will be driving up the Australian West Coast during the next few weeks (if the van survives the trip) to write, film underwater footage for the visuals of our upcoming album and RELAX…
