Godsmack Frontman Questioned In Murder Probe

Dave Wedge of BostonHerald.com reports: Grammy-nominated GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna and a guitar hero pal partied with a Tyngsboro, Massachusetts woman just days before she was allegedly slashed to death by her jealous husband, and both rockers have been questioned as part of the murder probe, the Herald has learned.

Erna, lead singer of the multi-platinum Bay State metal band, recently met Christine McGee and hung out with her and others on at least three occasions in the days leading up to her savage murder last week, according to Erna's manager, Paul Geary.

"She was pretty enamored with the whole thing. She was at his house and couldn't believe she was hanging around Sully," Geary said. "She was kind of like star-struck."

But Geary said Erna was not romantically involved with the 31-year-old McGee, and that the rocker met her through his musician pal Gary Hoey.

GODSMACK will release its "greatest hits" album, "Good Times Bad Times....Ten Years of Godsmack" on December 4 via Universal Republic. The 16-track collection is loaded with career-defining milestones and seminal GODSMACK classics. Among the songs included are the band's clarion call "Whatever", their breakthrough #1 rock mainstream smash "Awake", "I Stand Alone" (2002's most played rock radio song of the year), "Speak" (the #1 rock cut from their 2006 album "IV"), and a rare GODSMACK cover of LED ZEPPELIN's classic 1969 debut single "Good Times, Bad Times".

Considered one of the definitive alternative hard rock bands of the modern era, the Boston-based group stormed on to the music scene in 1998 with their masterful self-titled debut album, and have never looked back. The only rock band to have scored 13 Top 10 hits in the Active Rock format, their most recent album, "IV", debuted at #1 on The Billboard 200 chart (their second #1 debut following 2003's "Faceless") and harking back to the thunderous arc of multiplatinum masterpieces like their five-million-selling breakthrough debut album and 2000's "Awake", as well as the more subtle flexing heard on their 2004 acoustic EP "The Other Side".

"Good Times Bad Times....Ten Years of Godsmack" track listing:

Godsmack To Film New Video This Weekend

GODSMACK will film a video for its cover version of LED ZEPPELIN's "Good Times, Bad Times" on Saturday, October 20 on the corner of Milk Street and Oliver Street in Boston's financial district beginning at 11:00 a.m. The newly recorded song will appear on GODSMACK's upcoming greatest-hits collection, "Good Times, Bad Times - 10 Years of Godsmack", which is due on November 20. A track listing has not been finalized, but the set will presumably include most if not all of the Boston band's 13 Top Five rock hits. There are no further details on what else the package will contain, although it's likely that a bonus DVD and some live acoustic footage will be included.

The band will take an extended, indefinite break following the release of the hits compilation, but singer Sully Erna had a message for all the fans that have stuck with GODSMACK for the past decade: "I want to say thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for the support and the love that you've given this band over the years. We're not going away, we are just gonna take a break and enjoy our 10th year anniversary, and kind of recharge our batteries. And then GODSMACK will be back, and we will come back bigger and badder than ever."

GODSMACK might play some acoustic shows in November around the release of "Good Times, Bad Times".

ANOTHER ANIMAL, featuring GODSMACK guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill and drummer Shannon Larkin, released its self-titled debut disc on October 2. The new outfit also includes original GODSMACK guitarist Lee Richards and former UGLY KID JOE frontman Whitfield Crane.

Godsmack Bassist Explains Delay For Another Animal

Launch Radio Networks reports: ANOTHER ANIMAL, the side project featuring three members of GODSMACK, has set October 2 as the release date for its self-titled debut album. The band features GODSMACK guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill and drummer Shannon Larkin, along with former UGLY KID JOE vocalist Whitfield Crane. Although the album has been completed for a while, Merrill told Launch that he, Rombola and Larkin didn't want any conflicts with their day job. "Legitimately, we were better off waiting until the GODSMACK cycle was done, 'cause we didn't want to compete, you know," he said. "We didn't want any of that type thing. And then it just had to be, we had to just have patience, and let the GODSMACK cycle do its thing, and then we're gonna go out and see what happens."

The album also features guitar and vocal contributions from GODSMACK's original guitarist, Lee Richards.

ANOTHER ANIMAL's first single "Broken Again", will head to radio at the end of August.

Tour plans for the act have yet to be announced.

GODSMACK begins a North American trek on July 17 in Houston, with dates booked through August 22 in Syracuse, New York. The band will issue a 10th anniversary box set, containing all its studio albums plus a brand new DVD, later this year.

Godsmack Extend Summer Tour

GODSMACK Extends Summer Tour Again - July 5, 2007

Launch Radio Networks reports: GODSMACK has again extended its summer tour, with the new dates beginning on July 28 in Alpine, California and ending, at least for now, on August 22 in Syracuse, New York. As with the rest of the band's live work throughout the past year, GODSMACK will play a mix of indoor and outdoor shows in both smaller theatres and larger venues. Drummer Shannon Larkin told Launch he likes to play both, but gives the edge to theatres. "You know, both of them have their magic," he said. "For the drummer, for me, the theatre is the ultimate venue because I can almost see every face in the room, and there is truth to this magic feeling of a power coming off the crowd, an energy. But, you know, arenas, festivals, you know, it's that just looking at a sea of people, even though you can't see all their faces, it's still a different energy."

GODSMACK next plays on July 17 in Houston.

The band will issue a box set later this year to celebrate the band's 10th anniversary. The package will collect all four of the Boston quartet's studio albums, its acoustic EP "The Other Side" and a DVD.

GODSMACK is also slated to participate in a tribute concert for late BOSTON singer Brad Delp, who committed suicide in March. The concert will take place on August 19 at Boston's Bank of America Pavilion.

Newly confirmed GODSMACK tour dates:

Jul. 28 - Alpine, CA - Viejas Casino
Jul. 29 - Paso Robles, CA - California Mid-State Fair

Aug. 01 - Long Beach, CA - Terrace Theatre
Aug. 03 - Las Vegas, NV - Pearl Concert Theatre
Aug. 05 - Englewood, CA - Coors Amphitheatre
Aug. 10 - Nampa, ID - Idaho Center Amphitheatre
Aug. 11 - Tacoma, WA - Cheney Stadium

Aug. 17 - Regina, SK - Conexus Center

Godsmack Celebrating 10th Birthday With Boxed Set

Billboard.com reports: A 10th anniversary box set and a side band will be rocking Godsmack's world later this year.

The Boston headbangers -- currently on a theater run continuing to promote their 2006 release "IV" --plan to commemorate the 10-year celebration of their first album with a package that gathers together its four studio albums, the acoustic EP "The Other Side" and a DVD featuring mini-documentaries about the making of each album. There will also be some live footage and possibly the group's 2004 acoustic performance in Las Vegas.

"We're just gonna try to make it really special," drummer Shannon Larkin tells Billboard.com. "Basically Universal, who we've been with since day one, said to us, 'You tell us what you need and we'll write the check. We want this to be special, too.' We wanted to make it a road case, but as we were doing some research we saw that Metallica made one of their box sets look like a road case, so that's out. If anyone has any suggestions, we're open..."

Larkin says Godsmack doesn't have much in the way of unreleased material but has been taping all of its concerts since 2004, so it may expand some of the albums with appropriate live material. He hopes to put a version of the band's nightly drum solo, which he plays together with frontman Sully Erna, in the collection as well.

Meanwhile Larkin, guitarist Tony Rombola and bassist Robbie Merrill are planning a summer launch for Another Animal, their side band with former Ugly Kid Joe singer Whitfield Crane. A single may come out in July or August as Godsmack finishes its tour, with an album following in the fall.

The impetus for the group, Larkin says, was an excess of material the instrumentalists wrote for "IV." "Basically we caught fire and wrote almost 40 songs, about four or five of which got picked for the album" -- including the No. 1 Rock track "Speak." "So we were left with over 30 songs that we really, really love and still wanted to get out there, so we ended up starting another band."

But Larkin hastens to add that Another Animal in no way threatens Godsmack's future. "It's simply a side project that has nothing to do with Sully," he explains. "There's no weirdness, no drama, no imminent break-up. We'd be foolish to end something that has such a nice history. Hopefully (Another Animal) is something the Smack fans will like, too."

Godsmack Drummer On Downloading One Song At A Time

GODSMACK drummer Shannon Larkin recently told Scott McLennan of Worcester Telegram & Gazette that the fact that the group's new album, "IV", does have a thematic arc makes it a rather risky album to release in the iPod age, especially for a band that has built its career with a string of hit singles.

"The new world of downloading one song bothers me," Larkin said. "Rob Zombie said it best when he said that if you took KISS' 'Destroyer' and just downloaded the song 'Beth', that wouldn’t be an accurate representation of what KISS was trying to get across with that album."

But Larkin, who admittedly loves the album concept, said that the art form is in trouble.

"Our manager Paul Geary gave us all iPods for Christmas one year, and he said, 'This is the future.’ He really thinks the CD will even be obsolete in five years, and that everyone is going to simply be downloading 'Godsmack VII' as a whole record."

GODSMACK is currently on the road with ROB ZOMBIE and SHINEDOWN for the mother of all rock shows this summer.

"It was one of those things managers put together," Larkin said, describing in the most unglamorous but honest way GODSMACK and ZOMBIE, another Massachusetts native, came together. "We needed something that would appeal to the promoters. We're good for a 6,000- to-8,000 seater, but we wanted a way to play places that added 3,000 to 4,000 seats."

At this point in its career, GODSMACK knows what its job is, but that doesn't make things necessarily easier.

"We all have families and children now. When I was packing my bag to leave for six weeks, I wasn't all excited. I was sad to leave my wife and kids," Larkin said. "And the older you get, touring is less of a party and more fatigue on the body."

Godsmack Plan Fall US Tour w/ Rob Zombie

Godsmack will finally head out on tour in support of their month-old "IV" in the fall for a 25-date U.S. trek that's set to launch August 25 in Dallas with support by Rob Zombie. The tour's finale is set for October 1 in Concord, California. Tickets for the entire tour go on sale Saturday through Ticketmaster.

"Debuting at #1 was a testament to our fanbase," Drummer Shannon Larkin said. "They ran out and bought the album the first week and made us #1, which, you know, we will give back to them this fall when we come back on tour. We'll give back to crowd for going out and buying our record and making us #1. We're bringing the biggest show we've ever brought to America, and we're going to be bringing Rob Zombie out with us. So, it's going to be an amazing thing. Hopefully, we can return the love to our rabid fanbase, and so we have to bring a great show to these people."

In a statement, Erna said that the band's "fans should expect the biggest Godsmack spectacle yet. This tour will be a virtual, visual, and aural circus. Expect the unexpected when we hit your town." According to a press release, Zombie will be setting the stage during each stop on the tour, turning the venue "into a funhouse of mystery and madness as creatures walk the stage of pyrotechnics, smoke, and mirrors. This is a no-holds barred show so hold on for the ride."

Larkin said Godsmack will spend much of this summer concocting a worthy set list, one that'll satisfy the fans who've been with them since the beginning as well as those who've just discovered the band.

"With the band having — what, 13 top 10 rock hits? — we want to play all the hits, of course, but you don't want it to be just all radio songs," Larkin said. "You want to put some deep cuts on there, and you want to get some songs from the new record that we're so attached to and love so much, because it's fresh and new to us" — like the first single, "Speak," and the forthcoming second single, "Shine Down." "It's hard to cram all this stuff into one set, so we're being very meticulous about picking our set list," Larkin explained. "We don't want to be that band that plays too long either, and we're thinking of maybe having multiple set lists. There are a good 10 songs we have to play every night — "Voodoo," the staples of the set."

The drummer said that Godsmack jumped at the chance to tour this fall with Zombie: "As soon as it was Rob Zombie, we were sold, because he's not only an icon in rock but I'm such a huge fan of horror movies, and his films are just amazing."

Here are the Godsmack and Rob Zombie tour dates, according to Godsmack's publicist: More...
