Onslaught

Formed: 1982
From: Bristol, United Kingdom
Last Known Status: Active

Background

Onslaught was formed in 1982 by Nige Rockett (guitar) and Steve Grice (drums). The band began life under the influence of the second generation of hard-core punk bands like Discharge, G.B.H, & The Exploited and the more metal influence of Motorhead. After 2 years of writing and hard gigging a deal was secured with underground label Children of the Revolution, and the band released its first album, Power From Hell, in 1985 with the lineup of Nige Rockett (Guitars), Steve Grice (Drums), Paul Mahoney (Vocals) and Jason Stellard on bass. The album was fervently received by the nascent thrash underground and contained a number of tracks that were to grow to become considered as thrash metal anthems, including the eponymous Onslaught (Power From Hell), Angels of Death and Death Metal (itself the subject of some conjecture – was this tune the first usage of the term ’Death Metal’ anywhere?) In 1986, Onslaught with the addition of new vocalist Sy Keeler signed to the mighty ’Music for Nations’ records which saw the release of the highly acclaimed ’The Force’ album, for many this is the definitive Onslaught record, containing more thrash classics like ’Let There Be Death, Metal Forces and Fight with the Beast’, the album received rave reviews across the world and catapulted Onslaught in to the higher circles of thrash metal and were seen by many as Europes hopefuls to end the American domination of the metal scene.. Touring with Motorhead, a legendary appearance at the 1st Dynamo Festival and shows with Anthrax and Nuclear Assault, simply added more firepower to Onslaughts evergrowing arsenal.. The huge success of ‘The Force’ album saw a wealth of major labels chasing Onslaughts signatures for the release of the 3rd album ‘In Search Of Sanity’. Onslaught eventually signed with ‘London records’ before releasing ISOS in 1989, but this was not to be without controversy.. Sy Keeler was unceremoniously sacked by the record company and Steve Grimmett was brought in as his replacement. The album was the bands biggest selling album to date, containing blistering thrashers like ‘Lightning War’ ‘Powerplay’ and the epic ‘Welcome To Dying’.. but die-hard Onslaught fans found the album too much of a departure from previous releases, due to the over-polished production and the replacement of Sy Keeler… Was this Onslaughts ’Final Moment’….? No, 15 years pass, Power From Hell & The Force are re-released on cd through the ’Blackened’ label, the interest in Onslaught is still strong, little did people know the band had reformed and had been secretly writing / rehearsing for 6 months at a hideaway outside Bristol.. Onslaught are returned with Sy Keeler once again at the mic. They then signed a worldwide deal with the impressive ’Candlelight’ label and the band entered ‘Backstage Studios’ Derbyshire, with long time friend Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Exodus) at the production / mixing helm..to record their 4th studio album ’Killing Peace’ The album was released to much critical acclaim in March 2007.

Destruction Slam U.K. Booking Agent

Germany's DESTRUCTION have released the following statement in the wake of their the recent UK tour:

All three bands really want to thank all of the fans who turned out to support us on our recent Tour of the UK., but we also wish with hindsight, to apologise to some of you that you had to see us in circumstances that were not ideal, at some venues which sometimes should not have even been included on the schedule. This is solely down to the work undertaken by the booking agent we opted to use, Jon Knight of HAGP Music and we would like to draw the attention of all other bands and the fans to this person because we are most disappointed that charlatans like this continue to be in positions of power in the industry we all love – that of Metal!

Destruction frontman Schmier comments: “After 24 years of playing Metal on a professional level, working with this concert agency was the worst and most unprofessional experience we’ve ever had in Europe! I wanna thank all the faithful fans that made this tour a success. Our loyal crew and our brothers in ONSLAUGHT and AMENTI who suffered the same circumstances as well, (Sorry mates!!) but, we all really deserve better than this HAGP Music guy, surely?! No catering on most of the gigs, no posters and advertisement for the shows and the technical rider, which we did send to the UK several months ago, all just seemed to have evaporated or been ignored!

Some of this tour was an insult to METAL! A bloody fuckin´ shame, but because the fans had waited so fuckin´ long, we did not want to disappoint any of you. I really hope that the of the lack of professional equipment at some of the venues will not harm any of the bands in the future or take away from the fact that we know many of you supported us to the hilt on this tour. We found solutions to go on and did not lose a single show on this chaotic horror trip! The replacement gig (Nottingham, Old Angel) for the cancelled show (in Liverpool) came with local assistance and from within the touring family, not from HAGP Music, who then decided also to stop talking to our management and ignoring our email requests for assistance.

Realistically, several shows on this tour should never have been booked in the first place. HAGP Music didn’t care about contracts, venues, the fans, the bands, not even his local guys who were making the best of it sometimes. To have shows announced as being cancelled without our knowledge, to not have the right equipment or have even researched the venues at all etc., caused dreadful tumult to everyone on the tour and required us ourselves to go on to metal forums telling people that the gigs would go ahead. How unprofessional is that? Without the long held experience of our combined band and crew and the great support shown by the Onslaught and Amenti blokes, this tour wouldn’t have survived! I publicly thank every single one!

It’s scary how losers like this guy, Jon Knight, can be in charge of representing us to the fans. I’m posting this to warn othert bands, DO NOT work with this liar! He calls himself a concert agent, but he is no more than a shady amateur!

Thanks again to the fantastic UK & Irish fans; Onslaught, Amenti and the locals that made the gigs possible! Metal doesn’t need this guy, and I can only discourage everybody to not work with him if you don’t wanna lose your ass! Be warned!!!”

Destruction’s European Booking Agent, Dragon Productions add: “In the beginning, Jon Knight (HAGP Music) left a great and professional impression on us. His offer was good so we decided to commit to this tour. Then, when time came to fix the contracts etc., the original offer broke down to only 50%. And this left the band without income, only payments for crew, flights etc. covered.

The band decided to do the tour anyway; they didn't want to let their fans down, but our feelings got worse and worse. The closer the tour became, the more questions we had, and the less Jon responded. He brought in a tour manager who tried to save the chaos, but of course, this guy was fighting a losing battle as the tour progressed because this was a disaster just waiting to happen caused by the lack of professionalism at its base. That tour manager left during the tour and Destruction’s sound engineer took this job on as well. If band and crew hadn’t been such a brilliant team this tour could never have been finished. No one should work with dreamers like HAGP Music, simply look for the professionals.
We will not make this mistake again as I’m sure won’t others who we are told have also worked with HAGP Music. We’re hopefully the last who will suffer this.”

Schmier (on behalf of Destruction)

Destruction Deny Cancelled U.K. Tour

Long-running German thrashers DESTRUCTION have issued the following update:

"To allay the confusion about the rumours of cancelled UK tour dates, we have a statement from DESTRUCTION/ONSLAUGHT tour manager Baz Barett that will clear up everything."

Commented Barett: "All shows as shown on the official DESTRUCTION and ONSLAUGHT websites are definately still going ahead! Leeds and Manchester events are definitely on! An unreliable promoter has caused confusion but this situation is now rectifed. Any questions please call the venues! All the shows have been outstanding and we hope to see you all!!!"

DESTRUCTION's "Thrash Anthems" album, a collection of reworked/re-recorded versions of the band's classic tracks, was released in January via AFM Records. The CD was recorded at House of Music Studio in Germany) and Little Creek Studio in Switzerland with almost the same team that worked on the group's "Inventor of Evil" CD: DESTRUCTION's live sound engineers Gerd Krenz, Franky Winkelmann and GURD/POLTERGEIST mastermind VO Pulver. The tracks were mixed by one of the best metal producers in Europe — Jacob Hansen, the Danish producer and INVOCATOR singer and guitarist.

Onslaught To Not Play At Hellflame Festival

The following message has been posted via the official Onslaught Myspace:

"Onslaught will not be appearing at the Hellflame-south side of hell festival in Lichtenfels this saturday (22/09/07) this was due to local government interference which in turn led the promoter to make a decision not to fly in any of the international bands booked to play the festival."

The band are still touring in support of "Killing Peace", their first album since 1989s "In Search Of Sanity" which featured Grim Reaper vocalist Steve Grimmet.

Onslaught Comment On Brutal Assault Appearance

UK thrashers ONSLAUGHT have posted this message on their MySpace page:

"Well, what can one say! What a fuckin' experience that was. This festival took place in a 17th century fortress. That in itself was unbelievable. Check it out. 8,000 absolute nut bags slamming, diving, screaming in the grounds of this unbelievable place. Doesn't get more surreal than this, guys. The back stage area was the parade ground and we took lunch in a candle lit prison cell. We played for 50 minutes, running over slightly and almost giving the stage manager a fucking heart attack but these things have to be done sometimes.

This will live for a long time in my memory as something as a one off experience...A big thank you to the Polish guys for making the huge ONSLAUGHT banner and also the guys that traveled form Australia just to see us. Also a big thanx to the Weymouth contingent - Cheers guys!!!!!

So what's next…Up From The Ground [Festival] with TESTAMENT in Germany...BRING IT ON - Anybody fancy this one?"

Onslaught Frontman Denies Reunion Is A Cash In

Dr. Abner Mality of the Wormwood Chronicles webzine recently talked to singer Sy Keeler of the reformed British thrash legends ONSLAUGHT. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Wormwood Chronicles: To play the devil's advocate, some folks say that many of the thrash band reunions of late are just to cash in. What would you say to somebody that claimed ONSLAUGHT's return was just for money?

Sy Keeler: Many have asked this question. We didn't make much money back in the '80s, and we have no idea how this album will sell, so our intentions were not to cash in. If we can earn some money that will be great...we reformed to have some fun, record the best album we could and play some gigs. We all have families, day jobs and all the responsibilities that go with life these days, so we'd have to sell a lot of CDs to enable us to concentrate on ONSLAUGHT full-time.

Wormwood Chronicles: When the band got back together, did things click right away or did it take a while for you to "connect" with each other again?

Sy Keeler: It took a little time to find our feet. None of us had picked up an instrument for years. We had to borrow at first... we weren't gonna go spend loads of money on gear before we knew it was gonna work. The first rehearsals were terrible. We reconnected well straight away, and within a couple of months we were writing new songs.

Wormwood Chronicles: You come from the "golden age" of thrash. Have you kept track of the scene throughout the years and what are your thoughts on more modern practitioners of the art like THE HAUNTED, LAMB OF GOD, ARCH ENEMY, etc?

Sy Keeler: Yes, I have kept track of what's been going on over the years; Steve and Nige had not, so I introduced them to the likes of ARCH ENEMY etc. I love music and bands such as THE HAUNTED have kept the spirit of thrash "alive." So many great bands these days.

Wormwood Chronicles: You left the band after the success of "The Force". What was the reason for your departure then and was it easy to get back into the band?

Sy Keeler: I was pushed! A combination of record company, producer and management saw to that. I wasn't right for the band. So they said... It was a dirty period which is now a very distant memory and the guys realized very quickly that the wrong decision had been made. They say that decision was the beginning of the end for ONSLAUGHT. The guys tell me now, if I had said no to the reformation it would not have happened. I jumped at the chance to rejoin ONSLAUGHT.

Onslaught Singer Undergoes Surgery

ONSLAUGHT vocalist Sy Keeler has undergone a successful surgery to re-attach the retina of his left eye and is recovering well at home. The detachment occured at the soundcheck of Leeds Rio's during the first leg of the reunited British thrashers' "Killing Peace" tour, forcing the group to cancel the remainder of the U.K. shows.

Barring any further complications, ONSLAUGHT will be ready to head out on the road again in the next three weeks.

ONSLAUGHT is currently looking into rescheduling the cancelled dates for later in the year.

Onslaught Cancel U.K. Dates

Reactivated U.K. thrashers ONSLAUGHT have been forced to cancel the remaining dates on their British tour due to a serious health issue concerning vocalist Sy Keeler.

The ONSLAUGHT frontman was rushed to hospital during the soundcheck at Leeds Rio's suffering from an acute loss of vision. Keeler has since undergone an emergency operation to repair a detached retina in his left eye. If it was not for this immediate procedure the doctors said he would have almost certainly lost the sight in this eye.

Following the band's announcement to the audience that evening regarding the situation, the other ONSLAUGHT members were taken aback by the overwhelming warmth and support showed to them by the enthusiastic Rio's crowd. This compelled the band to quickly reorganize and power through a few chosen classics with guitarist Nige Rockett handling the bulk of the vocal duties.

Speaking from hospital, a distraught Sy Keeler expressed his sincere apologies to all the fans that were looking forward to the first leg of the "Killing Peace" tour and is hoping to be fit enough to hit the road as soon as is humanly possible.

ONSLAUGHT is currently looking into rescheduling the cancelled dates for later in the year.

Entombed Added to Onslaught, Susperia London Gig

Long-running Swedish metallers ENTOMBED have been added to the May 7 concert at the Underworld in London, England featuring ONSLAUGHT and SUSPERIA.

ENTOMBED will release its new album, "Serpent Saints – The Ten Amendments", in Germany on July 13 through Threeman Recordings via a special arrangement with Candlelight Records. The 10-song effort will mark the group's first release with drummer Olle Dahlstedt (ALPHA SAFARI, ex-MISERY LOVES CO.), who replaced Peter Stjärnvind in 2006. The band has also scheduled a special showcase gig on May 3 at the Ballroom in Hamburg, Germany. Songtitles set to appear on the new CD include "In the Blood" and "The Dead, The Dying and the Dying to be Dead". Mastering duties will take place at the end of the month with Soren Elofsson at Cosmos Mastering in Stockholm, Sweden.

With regards to the musical direction of the new album, the band previously said, "'Serpents Saints' goes wider and deeper than the 'When In Sodom' EP but it's a pretty good indicator. It's no concept album but an ambitious attempt at creating a solid album with some recurring themes. Almost like the soundtrack to the film with the same name."
