"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Formed: 1982
From: Bristol, United Kingdom
Last Known Status: Active

Onslaught was formed in 1982 by Nige Rockett (guitar) and Steve Grice (drums). The band began life under the influence of the second generation of hard-core punk bands like Discharge, G.B.H, & The Exploited and the more metal influence of Motorhead. After 2 years of writing and hard gigging a deal was secured with underground label Children of the Revolution, and the band released its first album, Power From Hell, in 1985 with the lineup of Nige Rockett (Guitars), Steve Grice (Drums), Paul Mahoney (Vocals) and Jason Stellard on bass. The album was fervently received by the nascent thrash underground and contained a number of tracks that were to grow to become considered as thrash metal anthems, including the eponymous Onslaught (Power From Hell), Angels of Death and Death Metal (itself the subject of some conjecture – was this tune the first usage of the term ’Death Metal’ anywhere?) In 1986, Onslaught with the addition of new vocalist Sy Keeler signed to the mighty ’Music for Nations’ records which saw the release of the highly acclaimed ’The Force’ album, for many this is the definitive Onslaught record, containing more thrash classics like ’Let There Be Death, Metal Forces and Fight with the Beast’, the album received rave reviews across the world and catapulted Onslaught in to the higher circles of thrash metal and were seen by many as Europes hopefuls to end the American domination of the metal scene.. Touring with Motorhead, a legendary appearance at the 1st Dynamo Festival and shows with Anthrax and Nuclear Assault, simply added more firepower to Onslaughts evergrowing arsenal.. The huge success of ‘The Force’ album saw a wealth of major labels chasing Onslaughts signatures for the release of the 3rd album ‘In Search Of Sanity’. Onslaught eventually signed with ‘London records’ before releasing ISOS in 1989, but this was not to be without controversy.. Sy Keeler was unceremoniously sacked by the record company and Steve Grimmett was brought in as his replacement. The album was the bands biggest selling album to date, containing blistering thrashers like ‘Lightning War’ ‘Powerplay’ and the epic ‘Welcome To Dying’.. but die-hard Onslaught fans found the album too much of a departure from previous releases, due to the over-polished production and the replacement of Sy Keeler… Was this Onslaughts ’Final Moment’….? No, 15 years pass, Power From Hell & The Force are re-released on cd through the ’Blackened’ label, the interest in Onslaught is still strong, little did people know the band had reformed and had been secretly writing / rehearsing for 6 months at a hideaway outside Bristol.. Onslaught are returned with Sy Keeler once again at the mic. They then signed a worldwide deal with the impressive ’Candlelight’ label and the band entered ‘Backstage Studios’ Derbyshire, with long time friend Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Exodus) at the production / mixing helm..to record their 4th studio album ’Killing Peace’ The album was released to much critical acclaim in March 2007.

Pit Stories: Chile Rips The Doors Down!

Every week metal bands from across the globe check in with Metalunderground.com to share their favorite stories from live shows. Today Nige Rockett, guitarist from the legendary U.K. thrash band Onslaught, reminisced about a show in Chile a couple of years ago where the crowd literally ripped the doors down to see the band:

We were down in Chile two years ago and we’ve just come on stage and there was a huge crowd there. All of a sudden, about 150 guys just came piling through this audience….split everybody open and surged to the front and went berserk…massive circle pit going. I was like ‘wow, that’s kinda weird.’ We finished the show and we decided – ‘cause it was so hot…it must have been over 100 degrees in the venue – we decided to go hang at a bar across the road before the next band came on. We went through the doors….which were kind of left on the floor – there was these massive steel doors about ten foot high and about 8 foot - 10 foot wide. There is police outside and all these doors are on the floor and there is blood everywhere. I said ‘what happened here?’ He said, ‘well, when you guys started playin’ – none of these guys had tickets, so they just ripped the doors off and beat their way into the venue. And that was the surge that came in and it was absolutely crazy. These were huge doors and they were just ripped off their hinges. It was absolutely insane. Yeah, there is some crazy guys in Chile!

Exumer Drops Off Slaughterfest European Tour

German thrash act Exumer has dropped off the upcoming Slaughterfest Tour in Europe with Onslaught, MPire of Evil and Master, citing logistical reasons as the cause.

The announcement reads:

"The logistical circumstances that preceded this tour made it impossible to commit to the tour, even if it meant giving up our co/ headlining spot on the bill. We are just as disappointed as everyone else who wanted to check out this killer tour package but we had to make a decision and as difficult it was, we opted to pull out of the tour. Anyone who has seen us live in the past knows that we try to play energetic and exciting shows possible. Unfortunately, the logistical problems surrounding the tour would've made it impossible to guarantee the fans a 100% of what we are capable of and to deliver what they expect every night.

"We refuse to shortchange our fans and ultimately tarnish the EXUMER brand just for some profit. Our withdraw[al] from the tour has nothing to do with the rest of the bands on the tour package and we wish them a great run with loads of success, as we have nothing but respect for each of the remaining bands on the bill.

"We will do our best to put together a string of shows in Europe next year to make up for this cancellation and ask for everyone to consider our apologies and hopefully see you at one of the next Exumer shows!!"

The tour will proceed with the remaining acts, beginning on October 9th in the U.K. (see dates here). More...

Onslaught Details New LP "VI"

Less than a day after the artwork and title hit the web, Onslaught provided full details on the forthcoming new LP "VI." The album drops on September 23rd via AFM Records.

Recorded by the band at the band's own facility in Wales, "VI" was mixed by Thomas 'Plec' Johansson and is the first album to feature new drummer Michael Hourihan in all his glory. The album artwork was created by Par Oloffson, who has done many a cover for bands like Immortal and Immolation. The album is augmented by a new version of "Shellshock", (originally released on the 1989 album "In Search Of Sanity").

"We really pushed ourselves to the limits in making this record," says guitarist Nige Rockett..., "and I think that truly shines through in the final results. 'VI' is the most brutal and technical album Onslaught has ever made; no question, it's ‘Old School, but it's contemporary and it's fucking aggressive in the extreme, with a few big surprises thrown in for good measure..! We’ve gone about the whole album making process with a completely different approach and mind set this time, ranging from the artwork (by Par Oloffson) through to the final mixes with Thomas ‘Plec’ Johansson, who I must single out for mention along with our drummer Michael Hourihan; he was really upping the ante in the ass kicking stakes! We’re feeling kinda proud right now and pretty confident the fans are gonna dig it too!"

The track listing for the album is:

1. A New World Order
2. Chaos Is King
3. Fuel For My Fire
4. Children Of The Sand
5. Slaughterize
6. 6 6 'Fuckin' 6
7. Cruci-Fiction
8. Dead Man Walking

Onslaught Announces New Album Release Date

U.K. thrash legends Onslaught have announced that the successor album to 2011's "Sounds of Violence," yet untitled, will be released on September 13, 2013 (Friday the 13th) via AFM Records. The album will be recorded/mixed/co-produced by famed producer Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios in Denmark beginning on May 18, 2013. Onslaught celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year.

Guitarist Nige Rockett commented: "It’s awesome to be making another album with Jacob Hansen, there was never gonna be anyone else considered, simply because of the way Jacob works on a personal level and the incredible dynamics of his final mixes, we just know its gonna be totally immense…! The writing is 90% complete and its sounding very very cool, I’m not gonna say its ‘louder faster heavier’ than anything we’ve ever done because that’s a little bit cliché these days, all I will say is that ‘it’s very Fresh, it’s Old School and its Ferocious’ the rest we’ll leave up to you guys to decide..!”
