Powerwolf Streaming "Out In The Fields" Cover

The upcoming Powerwolf album "Blessed & Possessed" (reviewed here) will be released worldwide on July 17th via Napalm Records.

On top of that there's a ten track bonus tribute album titled "Metallum Nostrum" that features very special cover versions of classic anthems from metal giants including Judas Priest, Savatage, Black Sabbath, and Amon Amarth to name a few.

Today the wolves have released a brand new lyric video for the song "Out In The Fields" which is a cover of the Gary Moore track. Check it out below. Roel Van Helden commented on the song and lyric video:

"Like most of us, I began listening to metal when I was 11 years old. Later I discovered Thin Lizzy, who just like Iron Maiden - had a big influence on me. I still love to spin Gary Moore's records while having a good glass of wine. Also his blues phases were genius. For 'Out in the Fields' we made a few changes, for the musicians under us: The original track is played in 4/4 stroke, but we re-wrote it into 12/8. This way it became more metal. But a good song is functioning in any form."

The "Metallum Nostrum" disc is available with the 2-CD mediabook & all limited editions of "Blessed And Possessed." More...

Tribute To The Lesser Played Halloween Classics

So its Halloween yet again….and for some reason it just doesn’t seem as scary and wonderful as it used to be. Maybe its age….maybe it’s the state of the world….perhaps it’s just desensitization or my state of mind. Though its still my favorite time of year, Halloween used to be "special," mainly due to the fact that I bought into this notion that Halloween is the “world holiday of metal.” Not unlike horror films, metal used to have a creep factor in the 80's that seems all too polished and mechanical in 2014. For me, it's the only time when severely under-produced records can have a massive shock value.

On the topic of special Halloween memories over the years, I distinctly remember 1986 – when Slayer had just released what is arguably the greatest thrash metal album of our time just 24 days prior to Halloween. I begged my parents for money to buy it just around a day or two before Halloween…and it literally scared the crap out of me as a 15 year old kid. Every Halloween in that time, back when more people used to celebrate it with open doors, family, friends and I used to walk 5-7 miles – filling multiple pillow cases with candy…only to return home and dump it on the floor before switching costumes to go out for another 2-3 miles before all the lights went out in the neighborhood precisely at 8:30pm. 1986 was particularly memorable because the topic of discussion was “Reign in Blood.” My friends and I gasped in terror conjured by the album mostly because it was so "rebellious" and clashed directly (and indirectly) with our Roman Catholic upbringing. These were days before we reached the age of reason. More...

Roundtrip To Hel, Part III

[Continued from Part II]

SUNDAY, 6/29 - 13:00

“We have less than thirty minutes to catch the bus.”

THAT gets me moving. Did I mention I’ve developed Midnight Sun Syndrome since arriving in Finland? According to the current DSM edition, its chief symptom is “a complete ignorance and lack of regard for the time of day and nonchalant indifference toward tardiness; see also ‘The Casual Southerner.’”

I enter the bathroom. Nera, a shy, tiny black cat, scampers between my legs and out the door. I almost trip and plant a bare foot smack in the litter box. I’m still waking up.

As the mornings have ticked by - it’s still “morning” to us this weekend - it’s gotten more and more difficult to grease the joints, clear the skull, and get going. Tuska is not a camping festival, so I’ll be damned if I’m going to forsake the comforts of home at my disposal. A shit, shower, and shave is as good as a full-immersion baptism after a night of drinking.

My ill-advised windmilling at Omnium Gatherum last night really did a twisting number on my hair, which is in danger of Chris Barnesing. Lacking a brush, I clumsily yank apart the knotted strands and clumps cemented together with dried sweat.

And then, Rachel’s muffled yell over the running shower, through the closed door: “You ready?” Not even close. More...
