It may be a stretch to call an eighties hair band that sold millions of records underrated, but look closely: White Lion fits the profile. Despite going all-in with a glam look and cheese-filled videos, there was actual music being played. Listen to the guitars and drums, and for heaven’s sake, don’t look directly into their eyes! White Lion’s “Bang Your Head Festival 2005” DVD, available in the Unites States via Frontiers Records, captures a momentous and spontaneous moment in the popular melodic metal band’s career.
“’White Lion Bang Your Head 2005’ was something that never was meant to be, but somehow happened,” said vocalist/band leader Mike Tramp.
The group made history in with two Top 10 singles from its 1987 sophomore album “Pride” and developed a following that would stay with them through two more albums that did not fair as well commercially. White Lion disbanded in 1991.
Eight years later, Tramp re-formed White Lion with a new lineup and released two albums.
After a 2005 American tour, White Lion made the decision to dissolve the band. Then a call came in that the group could not resist.
“I was sitting at home in Melbourne, Australia, and a call came in from Germany, asking me if White Lion wanted to be the surprise guest on the Bang Your Head Festival the following Saturday - only 4 days away,” Tramp said. “The next couple hours I called around the world locating the other boys, talking to travel agents, and what have you. How the hell were we to pull this off? But somehow we did.”
The band arrived at the festival – one of Europe’s largest metal festivals - and spent four hours holed up in a dressing room so no one could see them.
“We took the stage to a thunderous roar from the massive head-banging crowd, and leapt into our set of classic White Lion favorites,” Tramp said. “The show was a one of kind and we never really understood what was going until many hours later, when we would gather our thoughts and kick back at the hotel. We had accomplished something in four days that usually takes us months to prepare, and we hadn’t even rehearsed or had any of our own crew with us. It was brave but it was also very refreshing.”
The band hadn’t known about the video recording of the concerts until months later. When Tramp had a chance to see it, he knew that magical show had to be released.
“It took longer to get it done than anticipated, but finally it is here and it hasn't lost any of the magic and power that took place in June 2005 at the BYH festival,” he said.
The set list is the same as the concert and the DVD also features bonus tracks from the USA tour and a full length interview with Mike Tramp from the following year’s Bang Your Head festival 2006 where Mike Tramp explains how it all came together.
White Lion released a new studio album, “Return of the Pride,” last year on Frontiers.
The track listing for Bang Your Head Festival 2005 is: More...

The official Return Of The Pride press release is below:
"All the trademarks of the White Lion classic sound can be found again in the new album which offers a musical variety that covers the entire musical spectrum the band is well know for.
Return Of The Pride kicks off with 'Sangre de Cristo', a thunderous epic that ventures into lyrical and musical territories best heard, than described.'“Battle At Little Big Horn' is the album’s other soaring epic, a musical re-enactment of one of Native America’s most significant historical event’s: Custer’s Last Stand.
Hook laden rockers such as 'Dream', 'Live Your Life' and 'Finally See The Light' maintain a positive musical and lyrical vibe throughout the album, whereas 'Gonna Do It My Way' and 'Let Me Be Me' are the modern day 'Living On The Edge' songs of rebellion."

Frontiers Records has announced the signing of WHITE LION for the band's first studio album in 16 years, entitled "Return of the Pride". The CD was produced by Mike Tramp and Claus Langeskov during 2007 in both Australia and Copenhagen and is scheduled for release on March 14.
According to singer Mike Tramp, the album title could be interpreted in two ways. "In a musical sense, we have taken a step back in time rather than a step forward in time," he says. "Over the course of this album, lyrically and musically many concepts and themes have been explored. Maybe 'Return of the Pride' means something entirely different." More...

AGE OF EVIL
Blasting-Zone.com recently conducted an in-depth interview with MEGADETH bassist James Lomenzo. Several excerpts follow:
Blasting-Zone.com: In hindsight, how would you describe the recording process for "United Abominations"?
James: "It was definitely a labor of love and respect in retrospect looking back at the whole project. We started just before Gigantour last year, which was weird because it meant I had only played three gigs as a member of MEGADETH. We went right into the studio, and Dave already had a whole bunch of material ready to go. I guess he had been preparing for this for a while. So our job was to interpret it and make it sound as MEGADETH-y as possible. It was actually a really cool environment. I was pleasantly surprised and a little shocked by how cool it was to work with Dave Mustaine. After all the things that people had cautioned and warned me about, I found them all to be not true at all. He's actually a cool guy to make music with. So we plodded forth in the studio and to make a long story short, we had to stop recording for a while to do the Gigantour last summer. Looking back at that, it was actually a blessing in disguise because it gave us a little bit of time, all of us, to sit back and look at what we were creating and how close it was to being a classic MEGADETH album…and Dave had a lot of time to fine-tune his lyrics and decided where he wanted to do. So that worked out really well."
Blasting-Zone.com: Did you have an opportunity to contribute any songwriting ideas?
James: "Dave had already pre-conceived most of the music, so we worked off of some demos and patterns that he had. My job was basically to put as much of my personality into it that the MEGADETH sound would allow. On some things, Dave just kinda let me go and dug on a lot of it, I think. 'Washington is Next' is a pretty good example of that. In other places, he would suggest things like, 'Why don't you play along with the guitars on this part because that would reinforce it and make it sound like more of a MEGADETH record?' So it was a really cool blend and the same was true with both Shawn and Glen, especially with Glen. He really shined with his solo work on there. There was a lot of space for his to do his thing and put his mark on the band as well. When I came into this band, I was just blown away by Shawn and Glen…by their virtuosity and their real love for this band, ya know? These guys are students of music across the board, so they were a real inspiration to me because they're great world-class musicians. They're every bit as MEGADETH as any of the other players… (former guitarist) Marty (Friedman), (former guitarist) Chris (Poland), (late drummer) Gar (Samuelson)…any of those guys."
Blasting-Zone.com: In retrospect, how would you describe your time with David Lee Roth? Was he as difficult to work with as the rumors would suggest?
James: "David Lee Roth was fantastic. Again, it was one of those situations where everyone was raising their eyebrows going, 'Good luck with that one,' ya know? I got there and man he was one of the best guys that I have ever worked with. I'll say that both Daves are alike because I think their misunderstood to a degree. They speak their minds and people don't like to hear what they have to say sometimes…but there's some validity when they do open their mouths. He was a cheerleader for the band, he made us very comfortable and he was all about being Dave. The trick that I've found over the years to playing with these guys is that they have this unique identity that they understand implicitly about themselves and that's why they continue to rise, ya know? If you can get on board with that and just keep your ears and eye open and do what it is you need to do to bolster these guys, the ride is easy and they make it very nice for ya. The thing that was great about Dave was that he was a bit of an esoteric where he'd come up with these little projects for us. He'd be like, 'Lomenzo, you play upright bass?' and I say, 'Sure…' and he'd say, 'Are you sure?' and I'd say, 'Yeah…' and he'd say, 'Then go get some…' (laughs). We'd start doing some stuff and off we'd go, ya know? It was fun for me after all these years to come in and be so diverse with such a character. It was fun."
Blasting-Zone.com: If the opportunity arose, would you participate in a WHITE LION reunion?
James: "Actually, I almost have twice."
James: "Yeah, I've found along the way that there's so many really cool people who dug that band. It's funny… I'll come to the MEGADETH shows and they cue right up. They'll have all the albums for me to sign and everything (laughs). I've come to find that people are really appreciative of that style of music and it's nostalgic for them, so I understand what that's about. There were a couple of things that came up just before we started this MEGADETH tour. I sat down with a couple of friends of mine from the band POISON and some other bands. On the way out of the dinner, the guys said, 'You know, we'd love to have WHITE LION out with us this summer…' and I said, 'Wow, that probably would be great. I can't do it right now because I'm in MEGADETH, but that's a great idea. Let me get (WHITE LION vocalist) Mike (Tramp) on the phone….' So I called Mike and he went to go spearhead it and I think him and (former WHITE LION guitarist) Vito (Bratta) got into some verbal fisticuffs on the radio, so it probably won't happen for them. A bunch of years ago just before I joined BLACK LABEL SOCIETY there was some speculation…about the group doing some European stuff, but again, I couldn't participate. But I would. If it would make people happy, why not?"

Rob Rogers, director of productions for Catch the Fever Music Festivals, cannot say enough about Rocklahoma, an 80s rock festival coming July 13-15.
Although Country Fever will happen first, June 7-10, at the facility between Adair and Pryor, Rogers talked almost exclusively about Rocklahoma when he visited Adair.
“These people do have money and they will put it into the community,” Rogers said. “The first week of sales outsold Country Fever and the VIP sold out first.”
VIP seats are up front and include non-alcoholic drinks, beer, parking, lunch and dinner. To make sure enough VIP seats will be available, Rogers said, a $1 million renovation is being completed at Catch the Fever’s facility.
Rocklahoma is happening in Oklahoma, but it was announced at a press conference in Los Angeles. Since then, Rogers said tickets have been sold to people in 15 countries, four Canadian provinces and all 50 states.
“We expect 50,000 to 60,000 people each day,” Rogers said. “Every hotel room is booked in a 50- to 70-mile radius. People are thinking about renting their houses.
“This isn’t a four-state area thing. This is worldwide. The numbers just keep going daily.”
Rogers said some of the bands in the line up hope their career will be restarted with this exposure. “This is different than Country Fever where the acts come in and out. The bands will be staying here,” Rogers said.
Rogers said the festival will be broadcast on world-wide pay for view television and the VH-1 music channel.
Rocklahoma will feature hard rock bands popular in the 80s such as Great White, Quiet Riot, Poison, Ratt and White Lion.

Former WHITE LION and current TRAMP'S WHITE LION vocalist Mike Tramp has issued the following statement:
"After much thought and consideration, I have decided to give TRAMP'S WHITE LION a second shot and make it a good one. I never felt good about giving up after our last agent messed up our plans for 2006 and we were left with nothing. So together with your many requests and the band wanting to do it, we're already off and running and this time will be taking it one step further! Yes I/we have decided to record an album of all-new TRAMP'S WHITE LION songs. Without promising too much, this is something we hope will be released sometime in April/May next year.
"It's funny how it all started. As you well know I have been working on a new solo album for a long time, but started finding myself a bit lost as I was progressing. One of the problems was that the album was getting too heavy and it was something I never set out to do. Ever since I recorded 'Capricorn' in 1996 I have wanted to go far away from the WHITE LION and FREAK OF NATURE sounds. But as the live shows started featuring songs from both bands, my solo songs started getting back into the WHITE LION/FREAK OF NATURE sound again. How many times have I said that MIKE TRAMP is MIKE TRAMP, not WHITE LION or FREAK OF NATURE? Still I never stuck to it, feeling that people still want to hear the old songs. Well, now that has solved itself. TRAMP'S WHITE LION or WHITE LION II, as I aim to call it, will play the songs of WHITE LION and what will come from the new album. The album will be the heavier side of me without compromise, leaving me to now soar free and higher in the direction I have always wanted to be as a solo artist.
"You might not believe it, but this is a heavy burden lifted off my shoulders as I hate to be confused when it comes to where I am going with my music. I am very excited to record the next WHITE LION album and from the songs already in the box, I know it will not disappoint the fans.
"The band will do a small tour of Europe in November-December so check out the tour dates as they get confirmed. We are not able to cover everywhere this time due to many reasons, but the goal is to be back sooner than later and reach as many of you as possible."
