Criminal Releases New Lyric Video

Set to release new album, "Fear Itself," next week (March 11th) via Metal Blade Records worldwide, Anglo-Chilean thrashers Criminal have now launched a lyric video for the track "Animals To Gods" online.

Criminal's Anton Reisenegger (vocals/guitar) comments: "This song has been one of our favourites since we wrote it. It's got many different sections, yet it flows like a stream of lava. The lyrics are about the human species reaching the pinnacle of evolution and what a one-way street that means in terms of the environment and other species.

"It's based on the book 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Mankind' by Yuval Noah Harari, and I do realize it is unusual to base a song on a scientific book, but it was a real eye-opener for me when I read it, and I can only recommend it to anyone remotely concerned about the future of life on our planet.

"Despite the heavy subject matter, I don't think the lyrics are too heady or pretentious, but rather menacing and apocalyptic. Costin [Chioreanu, the artist also responsible for the album cover] did an absolutely fantastic job in translating the words and vibe of the song into images. He did it in record time as well, and we didn't ask him to change anything when we first saw it, as we thought it was absolutely perfect." More...

Criminal Preaches The "Shock Doctrine"

Set to release new full-length "Fear Itself" on March 11th worldwide via Metal Blade Records, Anglo-Chilean thrashers Criminal today unleashes the album's second single "Shock Doctrine." Listen in through the player below, provided courtesy of NoCleanSinging.

Criminal vocalist/guitarist Anton Reisenegger comments: "I think this track encompasses everything that defines Criminal: the groove, the speed, the melody and the aggression. The lyrics deal with the way politicians use certain events to instill fear in the population, be it a terrorist attack, an economic crisis, or just lately the refugee crisis, in order to be able to put new policies in place and tighten the grip on the very people they are supposed to be protecting."

Recorded at Criminal bassist Danny Biggin's HVR Studios in Suffolk with a "no bullshit" approach to recording, the band purposely avoided the vices of modern metal production such as samples, quantizing and amp simulators.

The striking artwork by renowned Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu (At The Gates, Arch Enemy, Mayhem, etc.) perfectly represents the bleak, dystopian atmosphere of the lyrics, which denounce warmongering, misinformation, exploitation and other ills of modern society. More...

Criminal Reveals Album Details, Streaming New Song

The Anglo-Chilean thrashers from Criminal have announced their new full-length, "Fear Itself," is due out March 11th worldwide via Metal Blade Records. The first single, "Down Driven", can now be heard below, and pre-orders are online at this location.

Criminal comments: "Everyone who's heard the new album agrees that it is our most pissed-off sounding record to date. We didn't try to make it more brutal, but that's the way it came out. We just let the metal flow. I think having Sergio in the band has something to do with it, because, as a long time fan of the band, he told us when certain things seemed unnecessary. In fact, all but one of the songs are under four minutes long. Straight to the point, quick and painful.

"In terms of style, we didn't really plan anything, we just wrote the riffs that came to our minds. So there's a bit of thrash, hardcore and death metal, but also some classic heavy metal. All the stuff that we love put through a blender. And the end result sounds like Criminal. It's hard to define, but I think a long time ago we created our own sound, and every new album ends up sounding like that."

Criminal Signs With Metal Blade

Metal Blade just re-signed the Chilean thrashers from Criminal, with the label having this to say about the deal:

"We are very happy to welcome back Criminal to the Metal Blade roster. Criminal released four albums in the past via Metal Blade before they moved on to different shores and are now preparing their return to the Blade with a major blast to drop in March of 2016!"

Comments Criminal main man Anton Reisenegger: “Re-signing to Metal Blade feels like coming home to me. I’ve had a very close relationship to the label from when they sent me vinyl promos for my fanzine in the eighties, to when they offered us to release our second album in the US and Europe in the nineties, to when I worked for them myself in the 00s. I’m very good friends with all of their staff, so I’m really happy they asked us to come back, and I am proud to say we are coming back with one of our best records to date!”

More details on the upcoming new studio album will be revealed shortly, but Anton is nice enough to give us a sneak preview: “The new album sounds really pissed off and aggressive. Angry old men who don’t give a fuck any more. We have come to terms with the fact we’re not going to be the next Slayer, but we keep doing this because we love making music together and I think we have something important to say in a time when image on the one hand and technique on the other seem to be more important than the riff. To us, it’s all about the riff!" More...

Criminal Announces New Album Title

Thrash act Criminal has set "Akelarre" as the title of the band's seventh studio album, the first since the departure of lead guitarist and founding member Rodrigo Contreras and the subsequent addition of Basque guitar wizard Olmo Cascallar. "Akelarre" will be released on August 19th, 2011 via Massacre Records.

"Akelarre" is a word from the Basque language (Euskara) which is also widely used in most Spanish-speaking countries and translates to "witches' sabbath."

"The title is not to be taken literally, we haven't turned into a black metal band," comments band leader Anton Reisenegger. "It refers to a gathering of the powerful to plot their evil agenda, which is also reflected by the cover artwork. Sort of like an updated version of 'War Pigs'."

The artwork was once again handled by Chilean drummer/tattooist/designer Fran Muñoz. "We told him we wanted something different from the usual photoshopped covers," explains Reisenegger, "and he got it straight away. Actually, the first draft he sent us ended up being the final cover. That Soviet propaganda style looks killer and really stands out."

"Akelarre" was produced by bassist Dan Biggin at his HVR Studios in Suffolk, UK. His approach to the recording process was to keep Pro-Tools trickery to a minimum. "I wanted to make 'Akelarre' sound like a real band actually playing music, which seems to be a rarity these days," he says. "What you hear on the album are drum tracks as they were actually played by the drummer instead of this fake polished over-sampled bullshit that has been sucking the life and reality out of a lot of metal albums for years because it's fashionable. Half these albums sound ridiculous when you hear the kick drum work and then you see the band live and the drummer can't even play the songs close to that. If the playing is great and it has feeling and attitude then it doesn't have to be mechanical, and if the songs are good enough then they stand up against anything else out there." More...

Criminal Enters The Studio

Yesterday thrash act Criminal - originally formed in Chile and now based in the U.K. - entered bassist Dan Biggin's HVR Recording Studios in Suffolk, U.K. to record the band's seventh studio album, the first since the departure of guitarist / founding member Rodrigo Contreras and the subsequent addition of Basque guitar wizard Olmo Cascallar.

"The way we're approaching the drums this time around is to focus a lot on the set-up of the sounds before we record," explains drummer Zac O'Neil. "I think in the past we've been too quick to start tracking without thinking too much about the raw audio. I'm very keen to move in a different direction from the way that metal is going with sampled and edited drums, and go back to the way that metal used to be before all this electronic trickery. Hopefully we'll retain the dynamics and raw energy that just isn't present in many productions nowadays.

"I've also been concentrating on pre-production arrangements for the drum tracks. I want to make sure that what I play complements the songs and is not too busy or complicated for the sake of it.

"I'm really looking forward to how this next CRIMINAL album will turn out. Hopefully we'll also get some nice tracking footage as well for the fans to see just how we did it."

The as-yet-untitled album, the follow-up to the acclaimed "White Hell" (2009), will be released in August 2011 by Massacre Records.

Criminal To Enter The Studio

Chile-born, U.K. based thrash masters Criminal are preparing to enter HVR Recording Studios in Suffolk, UK in April to record their seventh studio album, the first since the departure of guitarist / founding member Rodrigo Contreras and the subsequent addition of Basque guitar wizard Olmo Cascallar.

Band member Anton Reisenegger commented:

"We know this is an important album for us, but we are definitely not over thinking it. Most of the songs are quite simple in structure, very heavy, straight-ahead and in your face. The choice of studio was pretty obvious, since HVR Studios are owned and run by Criminal bassist Dan Biggin.

"Having your own studio to record is a real luxury, and we want to make sure we use it for the best. We are aiming to keep edits and other digital trickery to the minimum and have a massive natural sound instead."

The as-yet-untitled album, the follow-up to "White Hell" (2009), will be released in August 2011 by Massacre Records.

Criminal Parts With Guitarist Rodrigo Contreras

Anglo-Chilean thrash metal act Criminal has posted the following statement online in regards to the departure of guitarist and founding member Rodrigo Contreras. Criminal vocalist Anton Reisenegger commented by saying:

"As some of you may be aware, Rod decided to go back to Chile a few months ago, leaving the future of the band uncertain. After much deliberation, we have now decided to replace him in order to be able to carry on as a band.

"This is not something we wanted to happen, but we have to be realistic, and being thousands of kilometers apart wouldn't have allowed us to work as a functioning band. This is not a studio project, our music is meant to be played live, and we have many plans for the future which require the four of us to be geographically close.

"Rod and I started this band almost 20 years ago and he wrote some of the band's best and most characteristic material, which made this situation extremely difficult for me personally. I feel, however, that we've done the right thing, as everything was talked through with all people involved, and Rod's departure happened in the most open, civilized terms possible.

"We hope that you, the fans, will understand this decision. It's not an easy step for us to take, and it wasn't a rushed decision, but if the only other choice is to stop playing as Criminal, we'd rather take the flak and soldier on.

"We may still play a few shows with Rod in South America next year when we celebrate our 20th anniversary, but nothing is set in stone yet.

"Rod's replacement is Olmo Cascallar from the Basque band Gamora, who already did a fantastic job as a stand-in on our last few European dates. Not only is he an excellent guitarist with a great stage presence, we also feel he will contribute an entirely new approach to our songwriting."
