Sunday Old School: Forbidden

Of all the metal scenes across the world, the eighties thrash metal scene in California is probably of the most well known, having produced such big names as Metallica and Megadeth. It’s been some time since we examined a band from the scene, so this week, Sunday Old School will be taking a look at Forbidden, one of the heaviest and most daring bands from the Bay Area. Forbidden was formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1985, originally under the moniker Forbidden Evil, by guitarist Rob Flynn and drummer Jim Pittman, who quickly joined forces with vocalist Russ Anderson, bassist John Tegio and another guitarist, Craig Loicicero. The quintet made a live record entitled, "Live at Ruthies Inn – The Eastern Front" before Tegio, Pittman and Flynn all left the band, (the last of whom would join Vio-Lence before going on to form Machine Head,) and their places were taken by Matt Camacho, Paul Bostaph and Glen Avelais respectively.

This new incarnation of the band decided to shorten their name to Forbidden, as they were afraid that the name Forbidden Evil would stereotype them as a black metal outfit. They soon signed to Combat Records, home of such other thrash contemporaries as Heathen and Nuclear Assault and in 1988, they released their first full length album, "Forbidden Evil." The record was a hit with critics and thrash metal fans alike and has since gone on to be considered one of the true classics in the genre and featured a number of songs that have become live staples such as "Chalice of Blood" and "Through Eyes of Glass," as well as the title track. Forbidden Issues Album Update

Craig Locicero of U.S. thrash act Forbidden has checked in with the following brief update about the progress of working on a new album and follow-up to "Omega Wave" (reviewed here):

"Sasha leaves the Bay to go back home and be with his family tomorrow and we unload the studio today. We got A LOT of work done towards the next Forbidden record this week.

"It's funny, I can't remember ever working as many days and hours in a row as we have. There is still much to do with the other guys, but we have some ripping material being conjured up!

"No two ways about it, this stuff is faster and much more thrashtastic then anyone would expect. I think we're off to a great start!"

Forbidden Issues New Album Update

Forbidden founding member / guitarist / songwriter Craig Locicero has issued the following update about working on a new album and the status of his other projects:

“Recently I've been getting bombarded with questions as to what exactly I am doing musically because I have so many updates about my different projects. Forbidden, SpiralArms, Demonica, and now Manmade God have all been thrown out there. So please let me explain a little bit.

“At the end of 2011, I made a commitment to myself: 2012 will be the year I have the most musical gratification and fun I will ever have had in my life. So far my mission is working out pretty well.

“Forbidden. We are writing a record presently and what we have so far is smoking-shit-hot-thrash-attack! Sasha Horn has been a lightning rod for our original energy since he's joined up. The only issue we have is the amount of time we get to spend together with Steve Smyth and Sasha both living elsewhere. But we have our 'Four Dates of the Apocalypse' coming up here in April and we finish that up in Santiago, Chile and Sao Paulo, Brazil! That will be awesome. While we get together to practice, we also work on new songs. Then, it’s Wacken in August and recording the new record before the end of the year for a 2013 release. I sure hope there is a 2013! Forbidden Announces New Drummer

Forbidden announced the addition of new drummer Sasha Horn (Ex-November's Doom/Ava Inferi) after a long search, involving an open casting on YouTube.

The band's announcement reads:

"After a couple of grueling months of sifting through video auditions, we've finally got our man. Let it be known that on Halloween 2011, Sasha Horn from Chicago is FORBIDDEN’s new drummer!

"There were so many great players throwing themselves out there and we were always encouraged by the prospects. We had 9 different drummers out of the dozens of submissions make the trek to Oakland to give it their best shot. Those drummers included Eli Lucas (Petaluma, CA), Duane Timlin (Houston, TX), Jimmy Schultz (Los Angeles), Pat Magrath (Los Angeles), Gee Anzalone (Italy), Todd Hansen (Australia), Henry Moreno (Florida), and Burton Ortega (San Francisco). We can't say enough about these guys and how much heart and guts it took to take the chance for the gig. Much love and respect to them! At the very least, we have some new friends and we know where some great new talent is.

"All of these guys kicked ass or they would have never made it through the door, but at the end of the day, it was a two-horse race between Eli Lucas and Sasha. We can say with certainty that if Sasha didn't slay the way he did, Eli would have gotten the gig. Both are incredible drummers with HUGE upsides. Eli will go far in this business!

"Sasha, however, lifted us to another level. When he started playing ‘Infinite,’ everyone in the band immediately looked at each other and our eyes got bigger. It was something that Russ and I have not felt since Paul Bostaph first played with us back in 1986, when we were kids. Simply put, great chemistry! A sense of invincibility was in the room. Then we played ‘Forsaken At The Gates’ and it was over. No need to keep playing - we were stunned. In fact, some of our hands were shaking! That's saying something. It was like gasoline thrown on an inferno!

"Now that we have our band back intact, we can start writing the next FORBIDDEN record with the confidence that we have something special once again. Like Bostaph, Jacobs, Hernandez and Hoglan, Sasha Horn will earn his praise and respect from our fans. He's FORBIDDEN’s next great drummer and we are very proud to tell the world! We are truly inspired to out-do ourselves."

New FORBIDDEN drummer Sasha Horn made the following comments:

"This was an amazing opportunity from the get-go, to be able to throw my name in on auditions for a band that I've been an avid fan of since I was 12 years-old. How does it feel to now get the chance to slay alongside them? Otherworldly. Truly out of this world. To just be considered along with the other amazing drummers from across the globe was a humbling experience in itself. And it's because FORBIDDEN is a band that wants to constantly take leaps and bounds up to that next level that I know this is the perfect union. When we got into that room and played together for the first time, the chemistry just went right off of the charts. That's a good feeling to start off with."

Sasha Horn's demo video can be seen here:

Forbidden Guitarist Comments On Loss Of Steve Jobs

Forbidden guitarist & GuitarWorld.com columnist Steve Smyth has posted the following message on his websites in regards to the recent passing of Steve Jobs:

“I wish to convey my deepest condolences for the loss of Steve Jobs, a visionary and in my opinion, the most forward-thinking genius of our lifetime so far.

“I'll remember him most for his undeniable contributions to the computing world, changes that led me away from being an ordinary PC user to a staunch Apple products user, who is still learning to find the boundaries of seemingly limitless capability that these products serve in my everyday life, from personal to business.

“As a professional musician and music teacher, I use his G4 laptop, MacBook Pro, iPod, or mobile phone every day in my music business on some level, whether it be creating, recording, playing back demos/takes/mixes, or teaching, transcribing, and writing.

“None of the ease, I have come to find - with Mr. Job's wonderful and forward-thinking contributions - could ever be found in any comparable product. Apple was always the first, the innovator in all-areas media in recent times. A feat I hope they are able to continue into the future as well.

“Rest In Peace Mr. Steve Jobs, and know that the very goal you set out to accomplish has been achieved. The world is indeed a better place because of your efforts.”

ProgPower USA XII: Day Two

If you attend Progpower, make sure you opt for the VIP gold badge over the regular. This will get you in to the “Insider Sale” where you will be able to purchase CDs of all of the bands that will be playing at next year’s festival. Gold badge attendees this year were treated to this sale in the vendor room long before the doors opened to regular attendees. Among the CDs on sale were some albums that previously had not received a US distribution, such as Amaranthe's debut.

When the doors finally opened, everyone was eager to get in and out of the bright Atlanta sun for another twelve hours. Being such an exclusive event, you could instantly strike up a conversation with any stranger you meet and be on the same page. With social barriers down, everyone was talking with everyone, discussing albums, bands, and previous ProgPower festivals.

UK-based progressive-symphonic band Haken was first up for the day, though the place was only half full about ten minutes before the band’s set. Clearly, the after-parties of the night before had been great. The venue eventually filled up in time for Haken’s second song. It was to be an exciting set, although a bit short. Seeing guitarists Richard Henshall and Charles Griffiths, as well as keyboardist Diego Tejeida rip some masterful solos did the trick on kicking hangovers from the night before. More...

Forbidden Issues Drummer Search Update

Forbidden has checked in with the following update about the band's progress in searching for a new drummer:

“After getting kicked in the balls last month, we've managed to land on our feet and keep running. We're already starting to think about the next record now and will be choosing a drummer sometime in October. I would call that progress!

“Ever since we started our quest for a new drummer, we've been walloped by videos from some pretty amazing players as well as offers from more established guys. It's been fun looking at the videos objectively and imagining what these hopeful dudes could do with Forbidden if given the chance. There will be a lot more videos posted on our YouTube channel and we’re still taking video submissions through the end of September. Some of the most impressive guys aren’t all from the U.S.; some drummers from abroad have to be taken seriously. We’ll announce our decision as to who gets to come out and jam with us soon. Stay tuned for that.

“We performed at Belgium’s Alcatraz Festival in late August with Gene Hoglan on the drum kit. It was an incredible night. The fan reaction was a huge lift to our spirits. That gig may have been one of our BEST shows since we've gotten back together! Getting to play there after cancelling our European tour was pretty special, and hanging out with our friends in Death Angel, Helstar, Anacrusis, and Vicious Rumors was way too much fun. Seeing them on the side of the stage while we were playing was good motivation! Thanks to everyone involved with the festival and all of the fans that came from different parts of Europe to see us. We still have a tour to make up!

“We’ve been invited to play the ProgPower Festival in Atlanta this weekend. This will be another show with Gene behind the kit. We're getting spoiled! There are many cool things about playing this gig, but the coolest one is that we'll be filming it for a live DVD to be released some time in the near future. Our fans have been hounding us about when we're going to do something like this; the time is now. Those of you fortunate enough to be there on Saturday will be a part of our history! We will be playing a few songs we have not brought out in years, too. Maybe even something off of 1995’s Distortion? We shall see...”

Drummers interested in online auditions should send their name and contact information plus their audtion video via a Dropbox, Fileblaze, or Mediablaze download link to forbiddendrummer2011@gmail.com.
