Finnish battle beasts TURISAS strike back with the frenetically awaited follow-up release to 2004's acclaimed debut "Battle Metal". Titled "The Varangian Way", this opulent and inspired masterpiece, which was recorded at Sound Supreme Studio and then mixed and mastered at Finnvox Studio (NIGHTWISH, H.I.M., APOCALYPTICA), transcends all sub-genres within the heavier metal worlds and unites each and all of their different elementary nuances into an experience unlike any other in a current scene of copycat bands.
Vocalist and producer Warlord explains the complex ideas behind this stunning new opus: "The album is based on a concept story which is fictional, but strongly tied to real historical persons and events. It's a journey of a group of Northmen, who travel down the East-European river route through the lands of modern day East Europe. This was an important trade route in the 9th-11th centuries and the Northmen going in this direction were called Varangians who took this route to Kiev and finally Constantinople. The album follows this journey and the songs are events that take place on the road. As much as it is a journey of these men, it is also a journey in a search for self and identity — something which the protagonist is going through throughout the story. The varying surroundings can clearly be heard on the album as it features a lot of influences from the different cultures and people our travellers would have encountered on their journey. More...

Georg Laakso, the guitarist of Turisas, who was badly injured in a severe car-accident in October 2005 has left the band.
"Nearly nine months has passed since the accident took place, and after six years in the band, I have now come to the point where I am forced to leave Turisas.
"I have been diagnosed with spinal cord injury which has an effect on all the functions in my body. In practice it means that nothing from my chest and below is working properly or at all, and I am now tied to a wheelchair - most likely for the rest of my life. Unfortunately my fingers are not working either and it is very unlikely that I will be able to play the guitar - or any instrument for that matter - ever again. To avoid sounding too gloomy I would like to point out that considering the circumstances I should have been dead many times already. Thanks to hard rehabilitation, zest for life and persistency I have already made some progress and I am slowly re-learning the basics of life. I have a hard battle of my own ahead of myself, but battles are meant to be won.
"I would like to thank all of you for the support you have given me during these hard months. All the letters, cards and greetings have gladden my heart enourmously. A big thank you to everyone of you! I would have wanted to inform you much sooner, but my constitution and the unclarity in things have made it impossible for me to give any kind of a reasonable statement earlier than now. I know that also this is still pretty vague, but I am hoping to be able to give you more information when things first come clear to myself. There is no such thing as giving up!"
Turisas is not looking for a replacing guitarist at the moment, but will continue doing all upcoming shows with only one guitarist as the band has already done since the accident took place. "I just want to take the opportunity to thank all the fans I have met, and bands I have shared stage with, during tours and festivals. It's been a blast — you will truly be remembered!
"To the TRISTANIA 'family'; Einar, Vibeke, Kenneth, Anders, Rune, Svein Terje, Østen and Carlo — it's been fantastic to be a part of you these years, thank you so much for everything."

The finnish battle metallers Turisas sign a deal with Century Media and will be putting out their new album "Battle Metal" on July 26th, 2004. The album produced by Terje Refsnes (Tristania, Morgul, ...) was recorded in France (at Sound Suite Studios). You can hear a new sound at www.centurymedia.de.
Here you have the impresions of the frontman Warlord: “Finally, after years of work we have something to present to all the people who have stood by our side so far and to all the ones to whom Turisas is/will be an interesting newcomer. ''Battle Metal'' is - as almost all debut albums tend to be - a collection of songs written during a six-year period between the founding year 1997 and 2003, but it doesn't suffer from the usual unevenness common to most debuts. From the first second to the last, “Battle Metal” is powerful orchestrations, catchy folkishness and the glory and the brutality of the battlefields - all bound together by an open-minded approach and pure progressiveness. This album is definitely something fresh in the whole scene and we hope you will find it as powerful and inspiring as we do ourselves.”
Finnish "pagan battle metal" act TURISAS have parted ways with bassist Mikko Törmikoski. We have found a replacement for Mikko already, who will be playing session live bass for now. How we take it from there we'll look into later..."
TURISAS are currently finishing up work on their debut album, entitled "Battle Metal", at Steel Track Studio in Finland and will be heading back to Sound Suite Studio in Marseille, France to mix the album with producer Terje Refsnes (TRISTANIA, DESTRÖYER 666, MORGUL).
