SUBWAY TO SALLY
There are few places I would rather see an event like Paganfest more than at The Palldium in Worcester. It is currently the venue in which I see the majority of great metal event pass through the Northeast. Needless to say, when I found out long ago that the great hall (which would have been more fitting the lineup here) would remain empty as Pirates and Vikings would be facing off in the dreaded upstairs portion, my heart was heavy. For one, the sweat soaked sardine fest that would come is not conducive to a man my size who generally enjoys a four foot warzone to avoid striking any of my metal brothers with lumbering limbs and no sense of balance. Secondly, even though I would witness my first live exposure to Alestorm and Turisas, two of many personal favorites, I would not actually hear OR see the event properly. The sound in the upstairs portion is absolutely unfixable no matter what the venue does and the stage is at least three feet lower. Unless you plow your way through the crowd of men, women and children leaving a trail of destruction behind to get to the front, photography with any camera is an epic fail. Even if you are that lucky, the frighteningly horrible house lighting rig showers the bands in merely blood red. So was the night that awaited me. But alas, the crowd was entertaining enough, the beer doth flow and above all the four main acts were there. For metal, we do most anything. More...
Finnish symphonic metal band Turisas posted a trailer for the upcoming Paganfest III North America tour, which starts next week on March 29, 2012 in Baltimore, Maryland. The festival also features Alestorm, Arkona and Huntress. Ex Deo was recently forced to cancel its participation.
Check out the trailer here:
With some after parties of legendary proportions at one of Helsinki’s many metal bars, I have to admit waking up was not so easy Saturday morning. And then I remembered it was day two of the expo, and went on my merry way back downtown. Day two of the expo would ring in the Finnish metal awards as well as many more bands, with the headliners today being Stam1na and Turisas. More...
Battle metallers Turisas will be heading back to North America this spring for "PaganFest: America Part III," their first-ever U.S. headlining run. Joining the Finnish sextet on their triumphant return to the States is a gathering of bands from across the world: Scotland's Alestorm, Russia's Arkona, and U.S. act Huntress. Ex Deo has now dropped-off the tour, and in regards to the band's departure from PaganFest, Maurizio Iacono comments:
"It is with deep disappointment that I am obliged to pull EX DEO off this year's PaganFest. We were all excited to play this festival and premier some new material, but unfortunately our new album 'Caligvla' has been delayed, and we need to finish it and make it perfect. Add to that, the Kataklsym DVD is also on its final production phase...We decided it would be best to concentrate on giving every bit of attention to the album you have been waiting for, and also for the Kataklysm documentary to kick major ass.
"This being said, we will still perform with EX DEO on the Montreal & Toronto shows with PaganFest, as we will be in studio in the area, closing up the album 'Caligvla'. Everything else is cancelled for EX DEO. We will return to support the album in the fall...
"Word from Rome is that the plans are already in motion for world conquest! We ask our fans to support PaganFest and the great bands playing this year!"

Turisas will be heading back to North America this spring for "PaganFest: America Part III," the band's first-ever U.S. headlining run. Joining the Finnish sextet on this triumphant return to the States is a gathering of bands from across the world: Scotland's Alestorm, Rome's Ex Deo, Russia's Arkona, and the US's very own Huntress.
In regards to the upcoming tour, Turisas frontman Mathias Nygard comments: "It took time, but finally we had a chance to make it back to North America. After many successful tours there with acts like Cradle of Filth and Dragonforce during the past few years, it's great to return as a headliner. This is a killer combo with great variety-- some of the most twisted acts of the folkier side of metal! Be prepared for a great night out-- I expect to witness some crazy audiences!"

Although it wasn't expected until December, the organizers of Australia's Soundwave Festival have made their second band announcement. Joining the 60 bands already announced are Staind, Wednesday 13, Unearth, Cathedral, Shadows Fall, Heaven Shall Burn, Your Demise, Kittie, and 14 other (mostly non-metal) bands.
Hole has pulled out of the festival after frontwoman Courtney Love refused to play before Limp Bizkit. Soundwave boss AJ Maddah said on Twitter that he was "relieved we got the moody old cow off the bill. [There’s] no point talking her back, only for her to cancel later, or turn up & act like a rotten twat to other artists, fans, etc."
A third announcement in early December will add another five bands to the lineup, and Danzig is one of the confirmed possibilities. More...

A second announcement for the series of one day festivals is reportedly coming in December, with 88 bands expected to be included in the final billing. More...
Finnish folk/symphonic band Turisas announced that they will return to Australia in 2012 as part of the Soundwave Festival Tour. The announcement reads:

"The dates are as follows:

Sunday 26 February – Soundwave Festival, Sydney
Friday 2 March – Soundwave Festival, Melbourne

Turisas has announced that Jukka-Pekka Miettinen (ex-Arthemesia, Ensiferum) will be joining the band on bass for forthcoming shows, and Robert Engstrand (ex-Kotipelto, The Flower Kings) will be coming into a completely new role in the group as keyboard player.
These changes are in response to the news that current bassist Hannes Horma and accordionist Netta Skog have decided to leave the band due to personal and motivational reasons. This announcement will not affect Tursias' tours this Fall.
Turisas comments: "A band is not something that can be kept together by force. If someone wants to quit, there's not much the rest of us can do about that. Both for Hannes and Netta it came down to the same thing: a choice between the band and other personal interests had to be made. We tried to find a compromise where both could be combined, but unfortunately in both cases it didn't seem possible at their end. Neither Hannes or Netta played a critical role in the creative process and studio work of the band, so in this sense not much will change. Still, they were always great onstage and we shared many memorable moments together. We would like to make it very clear that there is no drama here, and thankfully no hard feelings. Both Hannes and Netta made their decisions completely independently, based on their own personal reasons. Their departures are not connected in any way, it was just that this short quiet period between the Euro festivals and the forthcoming touring was the only meaningful time to make a smooth changeover to the new members.
"We'd like to thank Hannes and Netta for all the good times we had together over the years, and wish them both the best of luck in the future. As far as Jukka-Pekka and Robert go, these guys are both very talented musicians, and we are very excited about hitting the road with this new lineup. Please welcome our newest reinforcements---this is the beginning of a new era!"
Hannes Horma joined the band on bass right after the release of the debut "Battle Metal" in 2004. He says: "My career with the band started 2004---at the time I was only nineteen years old. It felt like a dream come true and since then, we've had some amazing time and unbelievable shows during these years. For the past couple of years I've been studying orchestral composing, arranging and classical singing and with the touring responsibilities, I haven't had a lot of free time and couldn't pursue my other interests. Lately, I've also felt that the 'flame' is not there anymore for me personally: it was time for me to move on to do the things I feel most passionate about. I love playing concerts with Turisas but I cannot be on tour for 6 or more months a year and try to study at the same time---no one can.
"I would like to thank everybody I've met during the years, all the fans around the world, the bands we're toured with and our crew---you rock! I also hope all the best for everybody in TURISAS: thanks for letting me to be a part of this for all these years. It's been a hell of a ride but now it's my time to jump off. Hopefully we'll meet again, someday, somewhere." More...

"We played two shows the past weekend: first festival show ever in Sweden at Getaway Rock festival & at Rock Harz, Germany. Awesome shows, awesome crowds! Video for Rock Harz will be online within a week. Turisas will return to Germany soon - we're playing at Heidenfest in September-October 2011."

After previously announcing new live shows in Spain and Portugal that were scheduled to take place later this month, Turisas has now issued the following update about postponing the dates:
"Due to unforeseen technical problems, Turisas is sad to confirm that they have had to postpone their forthcoming dates in Spain and Portugal. We are working with the local promoters right now to reschedule these shows in November 2011.
"The shows are NOT cancelled and current ticket holders will be able to use their tickets for the rescheduled shows. We are hoping to announce the new schedule in the next 48 hours. Our sincere apologies to all those who have already bought tickets and were looking forward to the shows – we are definitely still coming, just not as soon as we had hoped.
"As some consolation, we can tell that Turisas will be coming to Spain for a one-off special event in June – more details very soon."
Turisas has announced upcoming headlining shows to occur Spain and Portugal. Warlord Nygård comments from the midst of the band's U.S. tour:
"We've always had a very strong support on the Iberian peninsula and we're of course extremely happy about that. Over the years we've often been over there as part of a support act, but we felt we owed our fans in Spain & Portugal some proper headline shows for a change. We've been trying to make this happen for ages, but it's taken time. So now we're definitely coming, make you turn up and show your support! I'm sure we'll have some amazing shows happening! We think this trip will prove that bands could do so much more on the Iberian peninsula, if they had the courage to just go a bit further and explore it. We are super excited about it! Let's paint Iberia black and red together!"
