It’s quite hard to think of how a Christmas special could be done in a column exclusively about metal music. We came close last year with a look at British hit makers, Slade, who are perhaps best known for their song, "Merry Xmas Everyone." This year, we’re ringing in the holidays with a band who perhaps have a more traditional take on this season, as perhaps do some of our readers who are also subscribers to the Christian faith, or should I say, consider them self to be a Believer?
Have you forgiven me for that terrible pun yet? Then let’s move on to Believer, a band formed in Colebrook, Pennsylvania , that was formed in 1986 by vocalist/guitarist Kurt Bachman and drummer Joey Daub with bassist Howe Kraft and a second guitarist, Dave Baddorf joining soon after. Initially, their music was very melodic and the group demonstrated this with their demo, "The Return," in 1987, which earned them a deal with R.E.X. Records. More...

Believer vocalist Kurt Bachman has checked in with the following update concerning the band's forthcoming studio album.
"As we begin the writing process, I feel that this will be the most sensual of all Believer releases. Once again we are striving to create something unique, while not throwing away any riff just because it might not fit the typical Believer mold.
"This is part of the process we love and hate. We love being creative, yet we place intense pressure on ourselves to write something we’ll enjoy hearing and playing at least 2060 times. Of course, we are sticking to our two main goals: 1) Have fun and 2) Don’t die in the process."

Believer has issued the following comments about the band's upcoming album, which is set to be released through Metal Blade Records:
"We're pleased to announce that mixing and mastering for the upcoming album is complete. We decided early on in project that we wanted an outside person to mix the record so we could spend more time writing and recording. Kevin Leaman (Believer guitarist) recommended Kevin Gutierrez from Assembly Line Studios for mixing this record. Leaman had worked with Gutierrez previously and said that he was really easy to work with. From the first telephone conversation it was clear that Gutierrez understood exactly what we were looking for sonically and he seemed really interested in helping us achieve that.
"We let Kevin know we wanted this album to sound very musical; not just be heavy. We wanted to use the whole frequency range and not have all the mids scooped out so that everything going on in the tunes was audible. Most importantly, we wanted to keep the dynamics. We were a little nervous about not being there physically for the mix, but we spent so much time tweaking in the sounds for tracking that we were confident he had good stuff to work with. The rough mixes we made for ourselves already sounded pretty decent.
"Kevin was fast and efficient. He'd send us reference mixes as he completed each song and we'd be emailing/texting comments back and forth at all hours of the day and night. He was very responsive to our change requests and was really helpful in setting up the mastering session and communicating what we wanted to Maor Appelbaum of Maor Appelbaum Mastering. More...
Believer has just finished tracking its second release for Metal Blade Records. The recording will be mixed by Kevin Gutierrez at Assembly Line Studios and produced by Trauma Team Productions. Vocalist Kurt Bachman commented:
"We decided to bring back some of the orchestral feel of Dimensions by utilizing more layered guitars, keys and melody with different vocal arrangements. There is still the 'Believer' sound, but the musical progression continues for us."
Keyboardist Jeff King also commented: "We revamped our writing and recording process so that everyone could work at their peak times. We also spent a lot of time finding the right combinations of gear to achieve the sounds we wanted. Each Believer album has had its own sound that distinguishes it from the preceding album, and this project is no different in that respect. You still have the core elements that make it recognizable as Believer, but the guitar tone is heavier, the songs are tighter and musically it seems more refined."

Must say that we're excited about this one and hope you are also. Once we get a definitive release date we will let you know, but it will most likely be in the spring of 2011. We're hoping that this one is less pirated also so we can continue to do this for years to come."

Christian thrash metal veterans Believer has revealed that they are working on a brand new studio album. A message from mainman Kurt Bachman reads as follows:
"Hello everyone! It's been quite a long time since I blogged to you. It has been a busy several months for us but happy to say that we are recording the follow up to Gabriel now! The drums are just about finished and I have many tunes in the bag for the initial rhythm guitars. Once again, the tunes are quite different and when I listen to them it kind of sounds like someone else wrote them which creeped me out at first. I really like the tunes and you will be able to tell that we stepped outside our comfort zones. Always fun to do that! We hope to finish this up in the next couple months and I will keep you posted on possible release dates once we discuss with Metal Blade."
Pennsylvania metal band Believer has issued the following update regarding the production of their new album:
"As many of you already know, we've started to work on our next album. It will feature the same lineup as Gabriel and everyone is involved in the writing. We have a good idea of what we want to accomplish musically and artistically with the new album and having that focus has been very helpful in this early stage."
"Although we'll be posting general studio updates here, we want to save the more in-depth stuff for people on our email list. So if you are genuinely interested in studio happenings, gear talk, etc., go ahead and sign up here."

Earlier in the year Metal Underground presented its annual “Best Of” awards and with his finger always on the pulse, deathbringer mentioned a new dominance in metal leading us into 2009. Maybe you’ve noticed the extra acoustic interludes, the blazing shred solos, the disjointed poly-rhythms or maybe you haven’t - but either way a cloud of progressive influence has undoubtedly emerged over the metal scene. Not just in our minds here at MU, but in the minds of fans Opeth, Cynic, Meshuggah, Nachtmystium and Ihsahn stood out with impressive 2008 releases. Even more excitement and interest has been generated by collaborations between Ihsahn and Opeth, and 2009 hasn’t let up with Mastodon’s progressive opus “Crack The Skye” and Obscura’s “Cosmogenesis” leading the charge.
So what magic is at work here aside from great prog-metal releases? Larger bands such as the explosive power metal act DragonForce and progressive groovers Mastodon have played a large part in the uprising of the pursuit of extreme talent for more mainstream metal fans - opening legions of otherwise clueless greenhorns to the bar of instrumental ability. Old hands such as Deicide, Cannibal Corpse and numerous thrash acts have also not been untouched by the progressive aura and have regained the thirst for pushing technical boundaries - a truly founding ideal of metal if ever there was one. Another force at play here is the power the internet has had in exposing technical freak shows like Necrophagist as well as many young tech-metal heads being introduced to metal and fostered through 90s progressive acts such as Tool or Dream Theater. Not enough for you? Let’s take a little trip back in time then. More...
Reunited Christian thrash metal group Believer has posted a second new song entitled, "Stoned" online at their official Myspace account. You can check out the song by clicking here. The song comes from the bands forthcoming new studio album, "Gabriel" which will be released on March 17th through Cesspool Recordings / Metal Blade Records.
Speaking on "Stoned," drummer Joey Daub says: "As we were mixing Stoned, the ripping old school death metal riff and locking into a groove felt great until we added the weird piano section. After repeated listens to this part during the mix, both Jeff and Kevin developed throbbing headaches and severe nausea. It must have been the odd, conflicting timing between the keys, guitars and drums totally screwing with their inner ears or something. Obviously Kurt and I felt great (not sure what that says about us), but I guess that’s what one might call ‘feeling the song’. Warning: Listening to this section over and over again may induce physical illness."
Kurt Bachman, frontman of American Christian metal band Believer has checked in with an update regarding the band. It reads as follows: "Hello once again.
"I can't believe the release of Gabriel is only approximately 10 days away. Many of you who pre-ordered may receive it before then! The buzz you all have generated has been staggering and we are completely humbled by your support.
"We have been busy rehearsing and doing interviews. From those in the media who have heard Gabriel, we have been getting excellent reviews and opinions. The one comment that stands out and seems to be a recurring theme is that the record gets better with every listen, so if you still don't dig it after a few listens then just throw it out or give it away!
"Again, thanks to everyone for your generous support and we are stoked to be back!!!"
