Finnish black metal band Thy Serpent started as guitarist Sami Tenetz’s one-man project back in 1993. During these first years Sami made two demos, "Frozen Memory" (1994) and "Into Everlasting Fire" (1995). The latter of the two which got Thy Serpent signed to Spinefarm Records and new members were added to the band - Luopio (bass) and Agathon (drums; Corporal Punishment, Walhalla, Soulgrind, Devastation, Hellstorm). Thy Serpents first full-length album, "Forests of Witchery," was then recorded during the summer of 1996 at Tico-Tico Studios, along with "Lords of Twilight" (1997), an album consisting of re-recorded old demo songs. After that, Luopio decided to end his involvement with the metal scene and was replaced by Azhemin (Shape of Despair, Soulgrind, Wanderer) on bass. Children of Bodom frontman, Alexi Laiho, joined the band briefly in 1997 but left to focus on his own band.

After the release of their third studio album, "Christcrusher" (1998) and a small tour in Finland with Barathrum, the line-up changed with the replacement of drummer Agathon with Teemu Laitinen (Throne of Chaos) and the addition of a second guitarist Tomi Ullgren (Rapture, Shape of Despair, ex-Impaled Nazarene). With the new line-up, Thy Serpent went into the studio and recorded the EP "Death" (2000).
