Cattle Decapitation on "Militant Vegetarian" Label

Vince Neilstein of MetalSucks recently caught up with Josh Elmore (guitar) and Troy Oftedal (bass) of Cattle Decapitation at the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival in Worcester, MA last month. Josh and Troy spoke about the band's new album "The Harvest Floor," the critical response it received, being falsely pigeonholed as a bunch of crazy vegan militants, and the importance of having day jobs to balance life in a touring metal band. Here's an excerpt from the interview:

MetalSucks: Why do you think you have two strikes against you? What do you mean by that?

Josh Elmore: I think a lot of it is the whole stupid veggie thing that people seem to think that every song from this band is about that. It's like "fuck that hippie shit" or whatever. I just think we got a bad image because of that. People have a negative connotation of that sort of thing. They think we're out preaching and handing out samples to everyone.

Troy Oftedal: We're definitely not.

Josh Elmore: And we're definitely not doing that. We're not some crazy, activist vegan band. We just all happen to be non-meat eaters. I think that the press has taken it way too far.

Troy Oftedal: It's like, do what you want to do.

Josh Elmore: This is the way that I choose to live. Have fun.

Troy Oftedal: Music comes first.

Josh Elmore: There is a whole message that people suck.

Troy Oftedal: That's more of the message than any sort of animal rights kind of thing.

Josh Elmore: Maybe in the first couple of records there was some of that. There was definitely some of that, not maybe, there was some of that. Ever since Metal Blade, that's four albums now, in the past seven years, it's all been anti-human rather than any sort of animal rights kind of thing.

MetalSucks: Obviously the press loves to latch on to the veggie activist thing. Do you get tired of getting asked questions about that all the time?

Josh Elmore: Dude, it's so annoying. Seriously, it's like just get over it. It's been seven or eight years now. We don't know how many times we've said "alright we get it. You guys know that we don't eat meat." It's not what's a part of this band. It had something to do with it, but it's not everything. Try to focus on our music and what we're doing and not on what we eat or don't eat. It kind of gets old. I would hope that people would be focusing more on the music and aspects like that. Which, fortunately, they finally are becoming a bit more focused on that.

MetalSucks: Do you think there's a way that you guys can somehow continue to do what you do: write songs the way you write songs about what you want to write about and to sort of move to a point where you don't get asked those questions anymore? Or do you feel like you are pigeonholed?

Josh Elmore: I think we're almost kind of stuck with it.

Troy Oftedal: I think to a certain extent that we're going to be stuck with it.

Josh Elmore: I hope that over time it will start to die out. I think that it will always be there no matter what. We're going to get stuck with that.

NEMHF 2009 Adds Third Stage

The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival will introduce an additional stage this year dedicated to up and coming bands.

The third stage, sponsored by Deathcote Records, will be located at Chasers Nightclub, located behind the Palladium on the corner of Martin Luther King and Commercial streets. The main festival will be taking place at the Palladium.

“There are so many great bands and not enough time to get all of them on during the course of two days,” said festival co-organizer Sott Lee. “Adding a third stage is a great way for us to showcase some of the developing bands and it’s a terrific opportunity for these bands to play alongside some of today’s top metal and hardcore bands.”

The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival will take place on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18, with the Atticus pre-party on Thursday, April 16. This year’s event is presented by Randall Amplifiers, Washburn Guitars and Eden Electronics. Metal Blade Records will present the main stage. Prosthetic Records will present the second stage.

The Atticus-sponsored pre-party will be a unique event that will be combining film and music, kicking off with a screening of official film sponsor Anchor Bay's film "Crowley," co-written by none other than Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson. The provocative supernatural thriller is the tale of a virtual reality experiment gone wrong, sending the soul of the British occultist Aleister Crowley into the body of a shy university professor. But even as Crowley creates all-new orgies of depraved pleasures and black magic, he is now preparing to unleash the ultimate occult event upon the world. Also showing is "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," a sometimes revealing, sometimes hilarious documentary about the legendary Canadian metal band. The movie follows best friends Robb Reiner and Lips as they make a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the "demi-gods of Canadian metal, " influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, despite never hitting the big time. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams. The film will be followed by a performance by the band itself. The pre-party will also be held at the Palladium. Admission is free with a weekend pass or $15 for non-ticket holders.

Prices this year are $40 for Friday, $45 for Saturday or $79 for a 2-day ticket that also includes free admission to the kick off party on Thursday. Tickets are available at all Strawberries, FYE Stores, online at tickets.com or by calling (800) 477-6849. Tickets are available now.

Bands scheduled to perform this year include: More...

Woe of Tyrants Debuts New Music Video

Ohio's Woe of Tyrants are currently debuting their video for "Break the Fangs of the Wicked" at this location. The video was directed by Jake Beemer with Siege Media and filmed at the Majestic Theatre in Chillicothe, OH.

Vocalist Chris Catanzaro explains the video and its concept, "We were very honored to have the opportunity to work with Jake and the crew of Siege Media on our first video for the new record, 'Kingdom of Might.' The song is entitled 'Break the Fangs of the Wicked,' and despite being one of our most popular live songs, Fangs was chosen due to the fact that it successfully culminates the diversity and overall theme of the entire record. The video was shot in our hometown of Chillicothe, OH at the legendary Majestic Theater. We were fortunate enough to have some close, and very talented, friends come out to serve as the performers in the video. The storyline follows the song in that the song is about rising above negativity and evil and going back to square one in our love for our fellow person. We felt this was an important message to convey amidst a genre that speaks death almost constantly, and thanks to the professionalism of the crew we are very confident that it is going to turn out even better than we initially expected!" Cattle Decapitation To Film Music Video, New Ecard

Cattle Decapitation has revelaed plans to film a music video for "Regret & the Grave" as well as other updates. Here's the message from the band:

“We’ll be heading up to an old slaughterhouse in Santa Paula, CA this weekend to shoot the performance footage for the track “Regret & the Grave” from our album The Harvest Floor which will be released on Jan. 20th on Metal Blade Records! The video will be directed by Gary Smithson (High on Fire, Prong, Goatwhore), and will feature the band performing under the most dreary of circumstances and a story that touches on the futility of being, the ruining nature of humanity and will be available for viewing around the album’s release! We’ll keep you posted and see if we can’t get some cool behind the scenes photos displayed on our MySpace page soon after…”

Cattle guitarist, Josh Elmore, is featured in the current issue of Guitar World Magazine (with Eddie Van Halen on the cover). Read up on what the recording process for The Harvest Floor was like, the importance of the special guests and his brand of bizarre “spider-web-like” riffage.

An e-card for "The Harvest Floor" is available for viewing now and features the song “The Gardeners of Eden.”

As previously reported, the new album, "The Harvest Floor," will be followed up by a southern U.S. headlining tour entitled KILLING TIL OBLIVION with friends Psyopus, Book of Black Earth and Gigan.
