Band Photo: Lacuna Coil (?)
From: Milan, Italy
Last Known Status: Active
Originally formed in 1996, the band teamed up with producer Waldemar Sorychta (Sentenced, Samael, Tiamat) in 1998. Terrorizer Magazine hailed Lacuna Coil's self-titled debut as "superb, and its strength soon weakens whatever resistance you may have had after repeated plays." In 1999, The album In A Reverie was released with the same producer. They played at the Dynamo Open Air Festival in The Netherlands, the Metal Mania Festival in Poland, and Italy's prestigious Gods Of Metal Festival, and the Altheimer Open Air Festival. They released the Halflife EP, which was recorded in Italy with a new producer, to their European community of fans in the year 2000.
In 2001, they released Unleashed Memories with their original producer, this album (released in North America with the previously unavailable Halflife EP). Praised by Alternative Press for their "supersize chords that nearly burst into flame, gorgeous three-part harmonies and chill-inducing melodies that recycle in your head for days" and earning a special mention in Billboard Magazine's Hard Music Spotlight for their "compelling mixture of seductive melodies and aggressive riffs," the band embarked on their first North American tour with Moonspell in the winter of 2001. Metal Maniacs documented their live show to be "a sensory overload of the highest order. In one word: intoxicating."
Lacuna Coil creates a dream-like quality of the world, which floods you with a myriad of heavy and hypnotic sounds. The epic feel of their latest melodic invention, Comalies, will quickly lead to you believe that an incredibly personal epiphany is about to happen. Each song contributes to the build-up, encouraging introspection while documenting the sadness that this particular journey uncovers. Upholding the emotive yin/yang tradition of vocal interplay between the dulcet tones of Cristina Scabbia and the deliberate vocals of her male singing partner Andrea Ferro, Comalies is another dynamic exploration of Lacuna Coil's soulfully somber and stunningly enigmatic musical alchemy.

Below is our complete Lacuna Coil news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.

The LACUNA COIL MySpace page has been updated with a video in which singer Cristina Scabbia discusses the band's forthcoming "The Hottest Chicks in Metal" U.S. tour. In the three-minute video Cristina talks about how the tour came together, the other bands on the bill (WITHIN TEMPTATION and THE GATHERING), and LACUNA COIL's setlist for their first U.S. headlining tour in support of "Karmacode". You can view the video at this location.
LiveDaily.com reports: For Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia, it is not difficult to be a female hard-rock singer in a male-dominated world. She counts on professionalism and respect to earn fans.
"As long as you believe in yourself, you can always do it," said Scabbia, who shares vocal duties in the Milan, Italy-based band with male Andrea Ferro.
"I always thought if you give respect to people, you always get the same respect back. Of course, if you are expecting to be just the female in the band and then it's easy to make it just because of that---you are wrong. You're absolutely wrong. You have to be able to do your job. You have to be able to have balls. But I don't think it's a question of being a woman or a man. It's a question of having the right attitude."
Lacuna Coil, which currently is in the midst of the Jagermeister Music Tour with Stone Sour, is one of the few European hard-rock bands to cross the ocean and make a name for itself. It broke into the US market thanks to a 2004 spot on the Ozzfest tour supporting "Comalies" and a 2006 position opening for Rob Zombie. Scabbia chalks up her band's success to the fact that it is "offering something different from the other bands."
"Our music is not the typical music you listen to every day," she said. We always could care less about cliches and music. But we always try to be inspired by different things, and we created something that's absolutely different--we have two singers, a male and female, but we don't use the voices as the beauty and the beast. We have aggressive parts, but a lot of melody in the music. I think that made the difference. We're successful, too, probably because of the relationship with the fans, as well. We always like to interact with them, which we always thought was really important."
Other European hard rock bands haven't been so fortunate because of the high cost to bring a tour to the United States, she explained.
"There's an ocean in between, so it's really expensive to come here and to bring a lot of stuff, to have a decent [stage show], and it's a question of budget and a question of time, as well. If you want to tour properly in the US, you need a lot of time. It's not like you come here, play for a week and then it's done. You have to be able to touch every territory, touch different clubs--A clubs, B clubs, festivals, as well. It's basically a question of time, organization and budget."
After the Jagermeister tour wraps up, Lacuna Coil will begin a headlining tour in support of its latest album "Karmacode." The first single, "Our Truth," was featured on the soundtrack for the movie "Underworld: Evolution."
"Karmacode" closes with a cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence."
"It actually happened because we were thinking about covering a song especially for the live shows," Scabbia said. "We just wanted a very famous song that everybody could sing during shows. We tried different songs, but we just found out 'Enjoy the Silence' was absolutely perfect for our style, but it wasn't meant to be a [Lacuna Coil] single; it was just meant to be a famous song that people could sing during the show. But then people liked it so much that we had to release it as a single because people wanted it."
By the end of this year or the beginning of 2008, Lacuna Coil will return to the studio to record the follow-up to 2006's "Karmacode," which the band co-produced with Waldemar Sorychta. The group has begun penning new material, but it doesn't have complete songs.
"But we're collecting new ideas, keeping everything together and practicing a little bit," Scabbia said.
Here are the latest Lacuna Coil tour dates: More...
On Tuesday, April 10, I made my first trip to Baltimore's Ram's Head Live to catch the Jagermeister Music Tour, featuring Stone Sour, Shadows Fall, and Lacuna Coil. This lineup is one of the most promising metal lineups since the Fall 2005 tour, when Disturbed headlined with support from Corrosion of Conformity, bloodsimple and A Dozen Furies. With the least heavy bands headlining on both that tour and the present one, it's still a far cry form the days when Slayer headlined. But the tour was clearly designed to once again be a metal tour, but also draw in a comparable crowd to its more mainstream rock line-ups. More...

A full-length version of Megadeth's updated version of "A Tout Le Monde", which they have re-titled "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free) and also features vocals by Lacuna Coil's Christina Scabbia, is now available online. You can stream it here (Windows Media required).
Before hitting the road with LACUNA COIL, THE GATHERING have lined up a headlining show in New York City. The show will take place on May 15th at Rebel and support will come from TUB RING.
Lacuna Coil vocalist and one of the hottest singers around made a guest appearance with Megadeth.
A video has been uploaded to LACUNA COIL's MySpace profile in which singer Cristina Scabbia talks about the video shoot for MEGADETH's new version of the song "A Tout Le Monde", now retitled "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)", which took place March 8-9 in Los Angeles.
"A Tout Le Monde", which originally appeared on the 1994 CD "Youthanasia", has created controversy because the song was cited in an online post by Dawson College killer Kimveer Gill as one of his favorites before his Montreal shooting spree last September. MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine contends that he wanted to give the song a second shot at success, as the original video for it had been banned by MTV, and most radio stations followed suit.
Commented Cristina: "[Dave Mustaine] actually asked me to be part of this duet, and I was really surprised about it because 'A Tout Le Monde' is a song that I've always loved. It was a big surprise for me to get this invitation ? I was really honored to be part of it. And seriously, when I heard the final result, I was awesomely surprised 'cause I think that the two voices are fitting incredibly. I think that the version of 'A Tout le Monde' 2007 has a stronger attitude. If the original version was for the mellow mood, this one is way more rock, way more powerful. I totally love it. I was surprised myself, and I think that a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised.
"I tracked the entire song because we weren't really sure what we had to do, so we just wanted to be totally sure, so we recorded all the parts that Dave sung with some improvisation with it, double vocals. We basically made anything possible, so they could pick up whatever they wanted to."
Lacuna Coil will be performing several unplugged dates at various music stores around the US. These acoustic performance dates are:

'A Tout Le Monde' has been given a 2007 upgrade and will be the lead single from 'United Abominations'
The track, originally released on the 'Youthanasia' album from 1994, has been re-recorded and features a guest appearance by Lacuna Coil vocalist Cristina Scabbia. The track will differ from the original in that it is said to be more up tempo and include an extended solo.
But no one can tell the tale like Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, "[The original] video was banned, the single was shelved, and without [the fans'] loving support of a truly beautiful song it would have died. MTV banned it because they said it was a 'song about suicide,' as did many people, but why would the line 'I'd love to stay with you all' be in there? It would need to say something like 'I want to die,' right? And I had a manager at the time that was told, along with me, by MTV not to use director Wayne Isham because we had used him too much odd request, but I heard them loud and clear. Of course, management didn't listen and tried to slip it into MTV under a pseudonym and MTV flipped. They are/were pissed at me for something I didn't do and I would be OK if it was something I did, but I told the manager, and David Ellefson can attest to this, NOT to use Wayne. Their solution was to ban the $300,000-plus video, and radio in America was following MTV very closely at the time ? still do to an extent ? and did not play the single. The song was left at the altar. I got sent a bill. Then after the [college] shooting in Montreal [in 2006], where someone tried tying this song into that horrific act, I knew it was time to follow something that had been haunting me from the start of that song: I could not allow myself to accept the failure of my music because of someone else. I will take the heat, I am well forged by now, so there is yesterday's news.
"But there was something else: I'd wanted to hear that song as a duet, since it truly was a song of love. But the person had to be perfect had to be angelic. I decided, and I have sang 'A Tout Le Monde' again with Cristina Scabbia because she is that person. I had Lisa Marie Presley confirmed, as well as two other attempts, but Cristina was the obvious choice for our metal community. The song was sped up a little, like it was supposed to be on 'Youthanasia' before all the tempos were turned down. It has a 50% longer solo of original Glen Drover lead guitar blending into the original [Marty] Friedman solo, and launching off of that at the end of the solo taking it up a little bit more.
"So, now that leaves us with what to do with this song. Well, its intention was only to soothe my wounds, and it was meant to be a 'B-side' for Japan, but that didn't happen, as you will no doubt read. The song was finished and turned in to the record company and the radio department and everyone, including people that have heard the song before, are saying, 'This is the single for America!' There was excitement and a buzz, and they ALL agreed on this, which is a feat in itself when you have some many creative people in one place at any given time.
"Imagine my surprise, and my sense of being vindicated, and then the shock and concern about you [the fans] not understanding (which apparently you don't), let alone the indifferent public, which is now the primary target, since you have already heard it and it was supposed to be a simple 'B-side,' and the haters who will undoubtedly hate. On one hand it worked, and on the other, I have to explain myself, which I don't like.
But it gets stranger.
"Now 'A Tout Le Monde' has a new life and people are reacting, but there is concern about, as I was told, 'the guy in Arkansas that calls the song 'A Toot Lay Monday.' I said, 'I say the pronounciation in the song,' but it was suggested to me, to help the public to discover this classic you all know and most love (and some don't want tampered with) to add a subtitle.
"I said, 'huh?' The moments after that were inconsequential, and I just found myself agreeing because there were worse things I had to fix at the time, and I had to pick which thing I was going to give my attention to at 'crunch time.'
"So, in an effort to make things easier for the DJs, and remember this is just for radio, there has been a subtitle added to 'ATLM' ala 'A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)' for the album and the single has been called 'Set Me Free (A Tout Le Monde)' for radio by Roadrunner.
"You have gotten 'Sleepwalker', we posted 'Gears of War', and everyone seems to have heard 'Washington Is Next!', and I think we are doing pretty good.
"All I can say is, just trust me on this one. Again, it was meant to be a 'B-side' and with all of the professionals over at Roadrunner, I think they really may be right and they may have a real surprise for you.
"We shoot the video for this song on the 8th of this month [March] before I leave for Vancouver, and Cristina shoots her part on the 9th.
"Thank you to the guys in LACUNA COIL for supporting Cristina in doing this, and to you Ms. Scabbia, you were fantastic!"
The tracklisting for 'United Abominations' looks like this:
02. Washington Is Next!
03. Never Walk Alone
04. United Abominations
05. Gears Of War
