Originally formed in 1996, the band teamed up with producer Waldemar Sorychta (Sentenced, Samael, Tiamat) in 1998. Terrorizer Magazine hailed Lacuna Coil's self-titled debut as "superb, and its strength soon weakens whatever resistance you may have had after repeated plays." In 1999, The album In A Reverie was released with the same producer. They played at the Dynamo Open Air Festival in The Netherlands, the Metal Mania Festival in Poland, and Italy's prestigious Gods Of Metal Festival, and the Altheimer Open Air Festival. They released the Halflife EP, which was recorded in Italy with a new producer, to their European community of fans in the year 2000.

In 2001, they released Unleashed Memories with their original producer, this album (released in North America with the previously unavailable Halflife EP). Praised by Alternative Press for their "supersize chords that nearly burst into flame, gorgeous three-part harmonies and chill-inducing melodies that recycle in your head for days" and earning a special mention in Billboard Magazine's Hard Music Spotlight for their "compelling mixture of seductive melodies and aggressive riffs," the band embarked on their first North American tour with Moonspell in the winter of 2001. Metal Maniacs documented their live show to be "a sensory overload of the highest order. In one word: intoxicating."

Lacuna Coil creates a dream-like quality of the world, which floods you with a myriad of heavy and hypnotic sounds. The epic feel of their latest melodic invention, Comalies, will quickly lead to you believe that an incredibly personal epiphany is about to happen. Each song contributes to the build-up, encouraging introspection while documenting the sadness that this particular journey uncovers. Upholding the emotive yin/yang tradition of vocal interplay between the dulcet tones of Cristina Scabbia and the deliberate vocals of her male singing partner Andrea Ferro, Comalies is another dynamic exploration of Lacuna Coil's soulfully somber and stunningly enigmatic musical alchemy.

Lacuna Coil Posts New Live Video Online

Italian metal giants Lacuna Coil just recently announced the release of a new live album, entitled "Live From The Apocalypse," to be released on June 25th.

As of now the live version of "Apocalypse," originally released on the latest studio album "Black Anima," is available on all digital platforms! You can watch the video to "Apocalypse" taken from the bonus DVD below.

"Looking at the sand gliding down through the hourglass...

"‘Apocalypse’ is factual and actual in today’s pandemic, though we couldn’t foresee this when we wrote it: the separation, the solitude, the confusion, the resilience. We keep on fighting for our will to survive." – Cristina Scabbia

"'Apocalypse' is usually a huge concept involving destruction or damage and the way the world ends. In our vision, there’s no big apocalypse just endless little ones. Ignorance, complacency, selfishness alone can bring apocalypse." – Andrea Ferro

"Live From The Apocalypse" is the fruit of an unprecedented time. Unlike previous live efforts the Italians, under the yoke of the pandemic, cleverly devised a way for their devoted fan base to hear and see them on stage by organising a special live stream event performing their latest album, “Black Anima” in its entirety, in September 2020. This very special show will now be released on vinyl and CD as well as a digital album. The physical album formats come with a bonus DVD featuring the footage of the original live stream. More...

Wednesday 13 Posts New Lyric Video Online

Just days away from kicking off their North American tour, Wednesday 13 and his boo crew have debuted a new lyric video for the latest single, "Monster" (Feat. Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil) from their recently released album, "Necrophaze," that is available now from Nuclear Blast Records. You can check it out below.

"'Monster' is the 1st Wednesday 13 song recorded to feature guest vocals. I wanted something different than I had ever tried before and I wanted a female vocalist. Cristina was the perfect choice for this song. I gave her the lyrics and some minor details, and she came back with what you hear. She totally floored us with her amazing vocal range and adding a new element never heard on one of our songs before." – Wednesday 13

"This collaboration was born from blackness. Wednesday and I are both fans of the darkest vision of art and music, and when I was asked to sing with him for the song 'Monster', I immediately visualized his concept and shared it with pleasure. What I love about this song is that some people in life are taking the worst out of us... but demonizing it all and pushing away the tension through notes is the best thing to do." – Cristina Scabbia More...

Lacuna Coil Unleashes The Black Anima In Bristol

It's truly wonderful how many bridges can be built in the realm of metal music. People from all walks of life and countries join together to celebrate the music we love and have a good time and tonight was no different. Three bands from across mainland Europe have come together and put together a tour that no one lucky enough to attend will soon forget, as Lacuna Coil, Eluveitie and Infected Rain joined forces to give headbangers one hell of a show, which was demonstrated perfectly on a cold night in Bristol.

Opening the night, almost as soon as the door opened, was Moldova's own, Infected Rain. After being independent for a while, the band released their first album through a label this year, the superb, "Endorphin," the doors are swinging open for this powerful quintet. Many opening bands struggle on a tour such as this to win over the crowd, but Infected Rain did so with incredible ease tonight. Frontwoman Elena "Lena Scissorhands" Cataraga possesses amazing talent, delivering one of the most flawless vocal performances I've ever seen, while working the crowd to perfection. It was a relatively short set, but a memorable one, which is sure to have won over plenty of new fans. Next time Infected Rain are in the UK, it's sure to be one which will see them perform in front of many of their own fans. More...

Apocalyptica Announces North American Tour Dates

Today, Finland's multi-Platinum cello-rock band Apocalyptica - classically-trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, and Paavo Lötjönen, and drummer Mikko Sirén - announces the Spring 2020 North American leg of the "Cell-0 World Tour." This tour leg will launch on Sunday, May 3 in Orlando, FL, and see the band performing in 20 cities over a three-week period wrapping up on May 26 in Boston, MA. With a set list that will likely vary night to night, Apocalyptica's performances will be comprised of new songs from "Cell-0" as well as the band's rich catalogue. Lacuna Coil will support on all dates. Ticket pre-sales and access to VIP packages begin tomorrow, November 20 at 10AM (local); public on-sale starts Friday, November 22 at 10AM (local). Go to https://www.apocalyptica.com for all pre-sales, VIP packages, and ticketing details.

In concert, Apocalyptica is known for its moving and bombastic live performances with sparse production but an abundance of head banging. Anyone who might think that there wouldn't be a deluge of excitement with three cellists should think again...these are symphonic rock stars who know how to shred their bows.

These tour dates are in support of the band's new album "Cell-0," set for a January 10 release (Silver Lining Music). Produced by Apocalyptica, mixed by Andrew Sheps (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Metallica and Black Sabbath), and recorded at Sonic Pump studios in Helsinki, the recording of Cell-0 followed a four-year break between albums that gave the band a fresh perspective and affected the way they approached the new music. "Cell-0" is the quartet's first instrumental album in 17 years and found the musicians challenging themselves to discover new flavors and colors in their respective instruments. More...

Hear Her Roar: Women In Metal

Today marks International Women's Day, in which we remember the contributions of many great women throughout history as well as in the world today. The day was first celebrated by the Socialist Party Of America on February 28th 1909. The tradition of celebrating women on March 8th was first done in the then newly formed Soviet Union, who declared the day a national holiday. It was adopted by other Communist and Socialist countries as a holiday before the United Nations recognised the event in 1975. Today the significance of the day varies, still being a public holiday in some countries, a day of protest in others and officially ignored in a number of other nations. So, what does all this have to do with heavy metal? Marie Curie, Rosa Luxemburg, Angela Davis and Joan Of Arc may not be common names in the metal world, but we have plenty of our own heroines and ladies to rival the lords.

For a long time, the role of women in heavy metal was seen by outsiders as miniscule or worse, nothing more than objects. Perhaps women have more of a role in metal music than previously thought however. Let's take for example what's considered the first heavy metal album, "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. The cover art depicts a mysterious woman, cloaked in black, stood right in the middle of an illustration of Mapledurham Watermill in Oxfordshire. This is only a tiny example of course, but as heavy metal grew, so did the presence of women. Bands would often sing about women, be it in the context of relationships ("Victim Of Changes" by Judas Priest for example, was comprised of two earlier songs "Whisky Woman" and "Red Light Lady,") sex "Charlotte The Harlot" by Iron Maiden or as inspirations ("Jet City Woman" by Queensryche.) Heavy Metal In Video Games Part 5

Heavy metal and video games are such an obvious combination that its baffling the collision doesn't happen more often. Despite four decades of games to work through, the number of titles that specifically revolve around metal themes or use heavy metal soundtracks is just abysmally low.

Today we're going to take another look at the limited options available, covering some old and some new entries that should be sitting on your shelf or taking up space in your Steam library.

For those who missed our previous three articles discussing various games with heavy metal soundtracks, be sure to go back and check 'em out (and let us know if you end up playing or re-playing any of these gems!):

Part 1: the amazing Brutal Legend, Saints Row III, Killing Floor 2, Pain Killer, and Guilty Gear X2 Reload

Part 2: Splatterhouse, Twisted Metal 2, The Witcher's bonus music disc, and Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And The Damned.

Part 3 (the retro edition!): Rock And Roll Racing, Beavis And Butthead, F-Zero X, Earthbound, and Heavy Metal Geomatrix

Part 4: the return of music games with Rock Band in addition to Carmageddon, NeverDead, and NeverGone. More...

Sunday Old School: Lacuna Coil

Italy may not be the first country one thinks of when it comes to metal music, given its warm climate and reputation for being one of the spiritual homes for both football fanatics and dedicated followers of fashion. However, the Mediterranean has produced a number of noteworthy groups such as Bulldozer, one of black metal's pioneers, along with Death SS, Cripple Bastards and Rhapsody Of Fire. The nation also gave the world one of the first metal stars of the new millenium, a Gothic metal band from the famous city of Milan named, Lacuna Coil.

The band was formed in 1994 by vocalist Andrea Ferro and bassist Marco Coti Zelati, under the name Sleep Of Right, recruiting guitar player Raffaele Zagaria and drummer Michaelangelo Algardi soon afterwards. The quartet recorded two demos, "Bleeding Souls" and "Noise of Bolgia" before adding second guitarist Claudio Leo and replacing Algardi with Leonardo Forti. While recording another demo, the group asked friend and singer Cristina Scabbia to perform background vocals, which led to her becoming a full time member. It was also around this time that the group changed their name to Ethereal and attracted the attention of Century Media Records, who offered the band a deal which they accepted, though they soon changed their moniker once more after discovering that a Greek band was using the name Ethereal, settling instead on their now familiar name, Lacuna Coil.
