Originally formed in 1996, the band teamed up with producer Waldemar Sorychta (Sentenced, Samael, Tiamat) in 1998. Terrorizer Magazine hailed Lacuna Coil's self-titled debut as "superb, and its strength soon weakens whatever resistance you may have had after repeated plays." In 1999, The album In A Reverie was released with the same producer. They played at the Dynamo Open Air Festival in The Netherlands, the Metal Mania Festival in Poland, and Italy's prestigious Gods Of Metal Festival, and the Altheimer Open Air Festival. They released the Halflife EP, which was recorded in Italy with a new producer, to their European community of fans in the year 2000.

In 2001, they released Unleashed Memories with their original producer, this album (released in North America with the previously unavailable Halflife EP). Praised by Alternative Press for their "supersize chords that nearly burst into flame, gorgeous three-part harmonies and chill-inducing melodies that recycle in your head for days" and earning a special mention in Billboard Magazine's Hard Music Spotlight for their "compelling mixture of seductive melodies and aggressive riffs," the band embarked on their first North American tour with Moonspell in the winter of 2001. Metal Maniacs documented their live show to be "a sensory overload of the highest order. In one word: intoxicating."

Lacuna Coil creates a dream-like quality of the world, which floods you with a myriad of heavy and hypnotic sounds. The epic feel of their latest melodic invention, Comalies, will quickly lead to you believe that an incredibly personal epiphany is about to happen. Each song contributes to the build-up, encouraging introspection while documenting the sadness that this particular journey uncovers. Upholding the emotive yin/yang tradition of vocal interplay between the dulcet tones of Cristina Scabbia and the deliberate vocals of her male singing partner Andrea Ferro, Comalies is another dynamic exploration of Lacuna Coil's soulfully somber and stunningly enigmatic musical alchemy.

Heavy Metal In Video Games Part 5

Heavy metal and video games are such an obvious combination that its baffling the collision doesn't happen more often. Despite four decades of games to work through, the number of titles that specifically revolve around metal themes or use heavy metal soundtracks is just abysmally low.

Today we're going to take another look at the limited options available, covering some old and some new entries that should be sitting on your shelf or taking up space in your Steam library.

For those who missed our previous three articles discussing various games with heavy metal soundtracks, be sure to go back and check 'em out (and let us know if you end up playing or re-playing any of these gems!):

Part 1: the amazing Brutal Legend, Saints Row III, Killing Floor 2, Pain Killer, and Guilty Gear X2 Reload

Part 2: Splatterhouse, Twisted Metal 2, The Witcher's bonus music disc, and Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And The Damned.

Part 3 (the retro edition!): Rock And Roll Racing, Beavis And Butthead, F-Zero X, Earthbound, and Heavy Metal Geomatrix

Part 4: the return of music games with Rock Band in addition to Carmageddon, NeverDead, and NeverGone. More...

Sunday Old School: Lacuna Coil

Italy may not be the first country one thinks of when it comes to metal music, given its warm climate and reputation for being one of the spiritual homes for both football fanatics and dedicated followers of fashion. However, the Mediterranean has produced a number of noteworthy groups such as Bulldozer, one of black metal's pioneers, along with Death SS, Cripple Bastards and Rhapsody Of Fire. The nation also gave the world one of the first metal stars of the new millenium, a Gothic metal band from the famous city of Milan named, Lacuna Coil.

The band was formed in 1994 by vocalist Andrea Ferro and bassist Marco Coti Zelati, under the name Sleep Of Right, recruiting guitar player Raffaele Zagaria and drummer Michaelangelo Algardi soon afterwards. The quartet recorded two demos, "Bleeding Souls" and "Noise of Bolgia" before adding second guitarist Claudio Leo and replacing Algardi with Leonardo Forti. While recording another demo, the group asked friend and singer Cristina Scabbia to perform background vocals, which led to her becoming a full time member. It was also around this time that the group changed their name to Ethereal and attracted the attention of Century Media Records, who offered the band a deal which they accepted, though they soon changed their moniker once more after discovering that a Greek band was using the name Ethereal, settling instead on their now familiar name, Lacuna Coil. Lacuna Coil Spellbinds Bristol

It's been a good year for new releases, with the likes of Superjoint and Brujeria returning, as well as new albums from Vader, Testament and Amon Amarth, it's a great time to be able to see some of the bands you love. Another group which released a new full length in 2016 was Lacuna Coil, whose latest release, "Delirium" has received some of the best reviews of their career and continues to lead them down the path of acclaim and success. The band are currently performing a headlining tour of the United Kingdom, which began in Bristol last night and which I was lucky enough to attend.

Opening the show was Italian Genus Ordinis Dei, a symphonic death metal band from Cremona in the Lombardy region. The group have a very strong presence, with frontman Nick K possessing some particular impressive talents in both his growling and guitar playing techniques. As impressive as they were, one can't help but feel it was perhaps the wrong tour for them, as there were several in the audience who weren't so enthusiastic, with a few even taking refuge in the toilets because it was, by their own admission, too heavy for them. It would be great to see Genus Ordinis Dei back in the UK soon on a tour where they might be appreciated a bit more, though it must be said that there were a good number in the crowd who did enjoy their brand of death metal. Lacuna Coil Premieres Music Video For "Delirium"

Lacuna Coil today premieres an official music video for the title track to the band's new album "Delirium".

Says vocalist Cristina Scabbia of the clip: “We filmed our parts for this video in one evening while we were on the US tour this past May. We used a Go-Pro against a black backdrop and we wanted something that would be purposely rough, something that could remind some weird lost videos found after years and years.

"The whole video edited together with the parts filmed by the director with an actress turned out as a very strange sort of a trip, where a girl tries to tight up memories and details together to try to find her sanity back, somehow. I really like some of the scenes as they reminded me some kind of Korean horror movies vibe and it is totally fitting the ‘Delirium‘ vibe and concept. It also leaves a lot to the imagination, so thanks for checking it out and enjoy."

Lacuna Coil Reveals "Delirium" Details

There is an old sanatorium up in the hills of Northern Italy. An old, abandoned, and decayed fortress whose corridors are filled with the ghosts of a thousand tortured minds and souls. A place where every wall still bares the scars of countless damaged lives… Welcome to the Lacuna Coil Sanatorium!

With this 8th studio album, the Italian Gothfathers decided it was time to up the ante, switch into a heavy mode and finally take full creative control over every aspect of "Delirium," which is set for a worldwide release on May 27th, 2016.

After being heavily involved with previous productions, Marco "Maki" Coti-Zelati took over the leading role as producer together with his fellow bandmates. 2016 shows Lacuna Coil including U.S. drummer Ryan Blake Folden as a tight unit that realized their collective vision for "Delirium" at BRX Studio in their native Milan between December 2015 and February 2016.

Yet again they worked with Marco Barusso (engineer, mix) and Marco "Maki" Coti-Zelati created the artwork for "Delirium," which is based on an atmospheric session captured by Italian photographer Alessandro Olgiati. The album's track listing is as follows:

1. The House Of Shame
2. Broken Things
3. Delirium
4. Blood, Tears, Dust
5. Downfall
6. Take Me Home
7. You Love Me 'Cause I Hate You
8. Ghost In The Mist
9. My Demons
10. Claustrophobia
11. Ultima Ratio More...

70,000 Tons Of Metal, Day One: "Casting Off"

When winter strikes the northern hemisphere, we know it’s time for our annual sojourn to the biggest and best floating festival on earth – 70,000 Tons of Metal. Back on its third different boat in three years, Ultimate Metal Cruises returns to destroy the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean with the most diverse and powerful lineup in its sixth voyage. This year, the boat returned to Jamaica, but a different port – Falmouth. Last year, a disastrous blizzard it the Northeast U.S. leaving many stranded on the beaches of Ft. Lauderdale upon return to Port Everglades, something I surely hope wouldn’t happen (he says with tongue firmly planted in cheek). More...
