Self-proclaimed leaders of the "new wave of American heavy metal", Chimaira was formed in Cleveland in 1998, recording the indie This Present Darkness album in 2000 before earning a contract with Roadrunner Records for their next two releases.
Chimaira was spawned in 1998 by Jason Hager, the guitarist of the now defunct, Ascension. Hager's desire to start an intense new metal band led him to Mark Hunter, previously of Cleveland's Skipline. Mark's vocal strengths and abilities as a songwriter made him an easy choice. After a great deal of trial and error the Chimaira family came to be what it is today: Mark Hunter (vocals), Rob Arnold and Jason Hager (guitarists) (recently left band and replaced by Matt Devries), Andols Herrick (drummer), Jim LaMarca (bass), and Chris Spicuzza (electronics).
This Cleveland six piece's unrelenting attitude and drive to succeed has helped them sell close to 10,000 copies of their independently released EP, This Present Darkness. Chimaira developed their fan base through touring, the Internet and radio- particularly stations 93X(Minneapolis) and WSOU (NY/NJ). Last year Chimaira shared the stage with the likes of Soulfly, Hatebreed, Spineshank, and Snapcase.
In March 2001 the band joined forces with the illustrious producer Mudrock (Godsmack, Powerman 5000) to put together the 14 fiercely emotional tracks that are showcased on PASS OUT OF EXISTENCE - the band's Roadrunner debut album.
Chimaira Interviews and Features
Below are our features and interviews with Chimaira.
Chimaira has been a New Wave of American Metal favorite since their conception in 1998. Their fifth album called “The Infection” will be hitting the stores shortly and the band is touring with Disturbed, Lacuna Coil, and Killswitch Engage on the Music as a Weapon 4 tour to promote it. I met with lead guitarist Rob Arnold during their stop in New Orleans, Louisisana, to talk about the buzz behind the new album. More...
Cleveland, Ohio's Chimaira is a metal band with genuine passion for their music; they are relentless in their pursuit to make each album and show better than their last. The band has gained much recognition, touring with legendary metal icons and releasing consistently solid albums.
The band is comprised of vocalist, Mark Hunter, lead guitarist Rob Arnold, rhythm guitarist Jason Hager, bassist Jim LaMarca, drummer Andols Herrick, and Chris Spicuzza on keyboards/electronics/ samples.
Signed by Roadrunner Records in 2001, Chimaria quickly recorded their debut album Pass out of Existence. Shortly after the album release, Jason Hager found he was going to be a father and made the tough decision to leave the band; Matt DeVries took over as rhythm guitarist. During their time at Roadrunner, drummer Andols Herrick decided to leave the band, replaced by Ricky Evensand, then replaced by Kevin Talley. After signing with Ferret Records/Nuclear Blast, Andols Herrick came back to record their forth LP, entitled Resurrection-their heaviest and most musically technical album to date.
It was amazing to sit down with Matt DeVries, along with my transcriber/photographer Bradley Hulett, to present to you this hearty interview. More...
In our ongoing Sounds of the Underground coverage, I had the chance to interview Chris Spicuzza (keyboards/fx) from Chimaira by phone last week. The band had yet to play their set in Winston-Salem, NC that day, and were to play immediately before headliners Lamb of God that night. Despite some phone issues, the interview went pretty well and Chris seems like a very cool guy. Here's how it went: More...
I had the chance yesterday to sit down with Jim (bassist of Chimaira). The interview was short but to the point, and as usual, without anymore delay, here is the interview: More...
