Band Photo: Fear Factory (?)
From: Los Angeles, CA, United States
Last Known Status: Active
This Los Angeles, California-based band is one of the few truly innovative acts in death metal, mixing industrial-style electronic rhythms and samples with grinding guitars and harsh vocals to create their own brutal soundscape. Formed in late 1991 with the line-up of Burton C. Bell (vocals), Dino Cazares (guitar, who has an additional side project, Brujeria ), Andrew Shives (bass) and Raymond Herrera (drums), the band rapidly made an impact with two tracks on the LA Death Metal compilation, produced by Faith No More bass player Bill Gould, and subsequently signed to Roadrunner Records.
The Colin Richardson-produced Soul Of A New Machine established Fear Factory as a genuine death metal force, with a good collection of songs delivered with originality and ferocity. Meanwhile, the band set about developing their live show on their debut tour with Brutal Truth in Europe, followed by US dates with Sick Of It All and Biohazard.
Fear Is The Mind Killer, a mini-album of remixes by Canadian industrialists Front Line Assembly, demonstrated further dimensions and possibilities available to the Factory sound by adding an industrial dance edge, bringing the band further acclaim.

Metalunderground.com is premiering the one-man cover for the Fear Factory song "Flashpoint," recorded by deathrash/groove outfit Common Dead. The track originally hails from the 1995 album "Demanufacture." All instrumentation and mixing for the cover was the solo effort of Common Dead's founder, Andrew Laurenson, including the recreation of sound bytes meant to mirror samples in the original. Check out the cover below.
Comments Laurenson: "This was a favorite song of mine that tends to get overlooked by some. It starts heavy, reaches up for melody, then crashes down heavy again. A short and sweet punch to the face that also hadn't been covered to death. This raw mix was made around sessions for the 'Diatribe' album as an homage to the masters of futurist metal."
Common Dead released its flagship effort "Diatribe" (reviewed here) in early 2012 after relocating to Montreal, Canada from the United States. The effort received warm reviews from press, including 3/5 from Metal Underground and 4/5 from Brutalism. Following the release, plans were announced to expand the official roster of Common Dead and induct new members for upcoming efforts.
"Common Dead was never exclusively a solo project, and that was something I voiced early on through websites and interviews" explains Laurenson. "Each time I would find myself playing all the instruments, it was just a matter of circumstances I was facing at the time and wanting to get something done in spite of it all. I'm looking to burn that cycle. I'm glad I got those solo works in the books, I'm proud of that era, but now I'm interested in starting a new era, and having more of a team."
Submissions from possible bandmates in the Montreal region are welcome at firstname.lastname@example.org. For more info and updates, join the band's Facebook page.
Fear Factory today reveals cover and package details for the band's forthcoming new album, "The Industrialist." Set for North American release on June 5th, "The Industrialist" is a conceptual record based around a story written by vocalist Burton C. Bell. Lyrics to the album’s ten songs divulge the narrative as discussed recently by Bell with Decibel Magazine.
The album’s artwork was created by American designer Anthony Clarkson with additional direction from the band. The album will be available on three formats – standard CD, a limited edition deluxe digi-book (featuring two additional songs), and 180-gram double vinyl. Check out the artwork at this location.
Bell notes, “The protagonist (The Industrialist) is the incarnation of all industries in the form of an automaton. The mechanical, technological, and scientific advances through the industrial age led to the creation of The Industrialist. In the story, the automaton becomes sentient as it collects memories with each passing day. Through observation and learning, it gains the will to exist. What was meant to help man, will eventually be man’s demise.”
"The Industrialist" again pairs Fear Factory with producer Rhys Fulber. Mixed by Greg Reely (Paradise Lost/Skinny Puppy), with additional tracking by Logan Mader (Gojira/Divine Heresy), the album is the second written by Bell and guitarist Dino Cazares since reuniting in 2009 after a seven year split. Cazares says, “collaborating with Burton again on the new album was like magic. Everything just fell into place naturally. It felt good to recapture the true sound of Fear Factpru, taking it back to where it all started while raising it to new levels.” Regarding Fulber Cazares notes, “Rhys has been our secret member/ He is the one producer who has been able to understand what we have been trying to accomplish from the beginning and has opened our eyes to new things without sacrificing our original sound. His production and keyboard talents has made Fear Factory stand out amongst the many bands of our genre.” More...
Candlelight Records today confirms June 5th as the North American release date for Fear Factory's new album, "The Industrialist." Produced by the band with Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly), the album was mixed by Greg Reely (Paradise Lost/Skinny Puppy/Machine Head). It features additional tracking by Logan Mader (Gojira/Divine Heresy/Five Finger Death Punch) and artwork by Anthony Clarkson (Devin Townsend).
"The Industrialist" is a conceptual album that brings to life a story scripted by vocalist Burton C. Bell. The album’s lyrics detail the plot of the original narrative while delivering Fear Factory’s massive signature sound. Bell reveals, “the album is a futuristic tale of an automaton, striving to survive by fighting for its existence within a desperate world. The lyrics tell the story while the music takes our industrial roots and blends them more perfectly than ever with our metal edge. And all without losing the sound that makes FEAR FACTORY a machine of sonic devastation. FEAR FACTORY fans of any era will not be disappointed.”
Clocking in at just under one hour, the album’s ten songs again unite Bell with guitarist Dino Cazares. It is the second album written by the duo, reuniting in 2009 after a seven year split. Cazares says, “collaborating with Burton again on the new album was like magic. Everything just fell into place naturally. It felt good to recapture the true sound of FEAR FACTORY, taking it back to where it all started while raising it to new levels.”
"The Industrialist" again pairs Fear Factory with long-time friend Rhys Fulber. Their collaborations together include five albums and two remixes, including the certified gold album Obsolete. “Rhys has been our secret member,” shares Cazares. “He is the one producer who has been able to understand what we have been trying to accomplish from the beginning and has opened our eyes to new things without sacrificing our original sound. His talents in production and keyboard/samples has made FEAR FACTORY stand out amongst the many bands of our genre.” More...

DAATH recently completed a North America run with Chimaira and Impending Doom. The band will be heading on another European tour soon with Fear Factory. A fan filmed video capturing the impressive Kevin Talley drum solo and the band's performance of the new track, “Double Tap Suicide,” can be seen here.
Levi comments, “DAATH is in Europe for the second time this year. We’ve been so busy making records that we haven’t been able to tour much; but what we’ve done so far counts like a motherfucker: Slayer and Festival dates this summer, Fear Factory/High on Fire tour this winter. The best part for us is that we didn’t just fly over here to start a tour cold. We kicked ass across the Northeast with Chimaira, Impending Doom and This or The Apocalypse this past November. It was some of the best fun we’ve had on any tour ever. On top of the fact that Chimaira is an extremely cool band to tour with, this was a very big one for us on multiple levels. As a band we are the most gelled live that we have ever been. We’re tighter than ever and goddamn; Kevin’s drum solo is badass. Whoever saw us on that leg got the chance to see the production we’ve added to the show as well. We’re always adding to it. As if blinding you guys wasn’t enough, let me just say that we’re going beyond just the lights."
“I’m writing to you guys from my Hotel Room in Luxemburg, exhausted. We finished the Chimaira run, drove to the airport, hopped on a plane to Europe and immediately met up with Fear Factory & High on Fire. It was a hell of a lot of traveling and of course with all that comes a lot of bullshit these days. Though as soon as we hopped up on stage and started playing it was all forgotten and the bullshit just melted away. The show was killer, the bands are killer, we’re just stoked to be bringing it to Europe yet again! Look for more updates on some upcoming tour videos we’ll be doing. I hope you are all doing well and I will check back in with you soon.” More...
