Background

This Los Angeles, California-based band is one of the few truly innovative acts in death metal, mixing industrial-style electronic rhythms and samples with grinding guitars and harsh vocals to create their own brutal soundscape. Formed in late 1991 with the line-up of Burton C. Bell (vocals), Dino Cazares (guitar, who has an additional side project, Brujeria ), Andrew Shives (bass) and Raymond Herrera (drums), the band rapidly made an impact with two tracks on the LA Death Metal compilation, produced by Faith No More bass player Bill Gould, and subsequently signed to Roadrunner Records.

The Colin Richardson-produced Soul Of A New Machine established Fear Factory as a genuine death metal force, with a good collection of songs delivered with originality and ferocity. Meanwhile, the band set about developing their live show on their debut tour with Brutal Truth in Europe, followed by US dates with Sick Of It All and Biohazard.

Fear Is The Mind Killer, a mini-album of remixes by Canadian industrialists Front Line Assembly, demonstrated further dimensions and possibilities available to the Factory sound by adding an industrial dance edge, bringing the band further acclaim.

Fear Factory Kicks Off Tour in San Antonio

On May Day 2012, Fear Factory ignited the “Noise of the Machine” tour in San Antonio, Texas. Formerly known as The Warehouse, Backstage Live’s industrialized setting seemed ideal for Fear Factory to get its gears churning. Even though “The Industrialist” isn’t due for another month (June 5), the group was “Recharging” its fans batteries for another dose of explosive cyber metal. Shadows Fall, The Browning, The Devastated and Legacy of Disorder served as support.

Having released “Soul of a New Machine” in 1992, Fear Factory has over twenty years of material to consider when creating a set list. Even though the group selected cuts from every full-length album except “Archetype” and “Transgression,” the set seemed a half-hour short. I’m not that guy who comes out to concerts to watch only the headlining band; however, the night’s billing of seven bands (two local and five touring) seemed to have stolen some of Fear Factory and Shadows Fall’s time in the limelight. Thanks to the gentleman who constantly photo bombed me with his camcorder, you can see video of four of the touring bands. More...

Fear Factory Announces New Drummer

Fear Factory's Dino Cazares just posted the following notice on his Facebook wall regarding the replacement of the departing Gene Hoglan and the commission of Mike Heller as the new Fear Factory drummer. Fear Factory's tour in support of the new album "The Industrialist" is set to begin in a few days, and a promo of the track "Recharger" can be viewed here. Here is the press release that Dino 'Asesino' put up:

"Mike Heller our new drummer Glad he's a part of the touring machine - Los Angeles, California 4/19/2012 - Due to conflicting obligations, Gene Hoglan recently had to step down from the Fear Factory throne, leaving it open for replacement. Dino Cazares came to us a while ago and asked if Sick Drummer Magazine could help the band find the ideal guy, and we were more than happy to make several suggestions, some of which actually flew out and auditioned in person. There were many amazing players auditioned in person and via video submission, but it had to unfortunately come down to only one guy.

Dino, Burton C. Bell and Matt DeVries want to personally thank each and every guy who spent time learning the songs and to let you know this was one of the hardest decicions they have ever had to make, but in the end... Mike Heller was just the best fit for Fear Factory moving forward. Mike's abilities on the kit, transcribing notation, his feel, power and precision, are some of the best they have ever seen and they are very excited to welcome him to the Fear Factory camp.

Here is what Mike Heller had to say about joining the band: "It is an incredible honor to be chosen as the new drummer for Fear Factory! It's something I never would have dreamt of as a kid listening to "Soul of A New Machine" and "Demanufacture" over and over again in middle school. It's also an incredible honor to be following in the footsteps of two of the most amazing and influential drummers in metal drumming history. I hope to continue their legacy, creating some of the most forward-thinking and innovative music available today."

You may know Mike Heller for his work with Malignancy or more recently, System Divide. Regardless of what you know, Mike is one of the most talented drummers we know, as well as one of the best drum teachers in the industry. Mike himself studied at The Collective School of Music in NYC and has since instructed countless industry professionals and worked with them (on and off tour) to improve their technique, overcome muscle issues, gain control and a myriad of other characteristics of being a pro drummer. He is a super nice guy and an avid collector of drum gear! Aside from his regular playing, we can honestly say he is the most talented linear player we've ever seen and want to say congratulations and good luck!"

Common Dead Premieres New Fear Factory Cover

Metalunderground.com is premiering the one-man cover for the Fear Factory song "Flashpoint," recorded by deathrash/groove outfit Common Dead. The track originally hails from the 1995 album "Demanufacture." All instrumentation and mixing for the cover was the solo effort of Common Dead's founder, Andrew Laurenson, including the recreation of sound bytes meant to mirror samples in the original. Check out the cover below.

Comments Laurenson: "This was a favorite song of mine that tends to get overlooked by some. It starts heavy, reaches up for melody, then crashes down heavy again. A short and sweet punch to the face that also hadn't been covered to death. This raw mix was made around sessions for the 'Diatribe' album as an homage to the masters of futurist metal."

Common Dead released its flagship effort "Diatribe" (reviewed here) in early 2012 after relocating to Montreal, Canada from the United States. The effort received warm reviews from press, including 3/5 from Metal Underground and 4/5 from Brutalism. Following the release, plans were announced to expand the official roster of Common Dead and induct new members for upcoming efforts.

"Common Dead was never exclusively a solo project, and that was something I voiced early on through websites and interviews" explains Laurenson. "Each time I would find myself playing all the instruments, it was just a matter of circumstances I was facing at the time and wanting to get something done in spite of it all. I'm looking to burn that cycle. I'm glad I got those solo works in the books, I'm proud of that era, but now I'm interested in starting a new era, and having more of a team."

Submissions from possible bandmates in the Montreal region are welcome at commondead@gmail.com. For more info and updates, join the band's Facebook page.

Fear Factory Reveals "The Industrialist" Details

Fear Factory today reveals cover and package details for the band's forthcoming new album, "The Industrialist." Set for North American release on June 5th, "The Industrialist" is a conceptual record based around a story written by vocalist Burton C. Bell. Lyrics to the album’s ten songs divulge the narrative as discussed recently by Bell with Decibel Magazine.

The album’s artwork was created by American designer Anthony Clarkson with additional direction from the band. The album will be available on three formats – standard CD, a limited edition deluxe digi-book (featuring two additional songs), and 180-gram double vinyl. Check out the artwork at this location.

Bell notes, “The protagonist (The Industrialist) is the incarnation of all industries in the form of an automaton. The mechanical, technological, and scientific advances through the industrial age led to the creation of The Industrialist. In the story, the automaton becomes sentient as it collects memories with each passing day. Through observation and learning, it gains the will to exist. What was meant to help man, will eventually be man’s demise.”

"The Industrialist" again pairs Fear Factory with producer Rhys Fulber. Mixed by Greg Reely (Paradise Lost/Skinny Puppy), with additional tracking by Logan Mader (Gojira/Divine Heresy), the album is the second written by Bell and guitarist Dino Cazares since reuniting in 2009 after a seven year split. Cazares says, “collaborating with Burton again on the new album was like magic. Everything just fell into place naturally. It felt good to recapture the true sound of Fear Factpru, taking it back to where it all started while raising it to new levels.” Regarding Fulber Cazares notes, “Rhys has been our secret member/ He is the one producer who has been able to understand what we have been trying to accomplish from the beginning and has opened our eyes to new things without sacrificing our original sound. His production and keyboard talents has made Fear Factory stand out amongst the many bands of our genre.” More...

Fear Factory Announces New Album Release Date

Candlelight Records today confirms June 5th as the North American release date for Fear Factory's new album, "The Industrialist." Produced by the band with Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly), the album was mixed by Greg Reely (Paradise Lost/Skinny Puppy/Machine Head). It features additional tracking by Logan Mader (Gojira/Divine Heresy/Five Finger Death Punch) and artwork by Anthony Clarkson (Devin Townsend).

"The Industrialist" is a conceptual album that brings to life a story scripted by vocalist Burton C. Bell. The album’s lyrics detail the plot of the original narrative while delivering Fear Factory’s massive signature sound. Bell reveals, “the album is a futuristic tale of an automaton, striving to survive by fighting for its existence within a desperate world. The lyrics tell the story while the music takes our industrial roots and blends them more perfectly than ever with our metal edge. And all without losing the sound that makes FEAR FACTORY a machine of sonic devastation. FEAR FACTORY fans of any era will not be disappointed.”

Clocking in at just under one hour, the album’s ten songs again unite Bell with guitarist Dino Cazares. It is the second album written by the duo, reuniting in 2009 after a seven year split. Cazares says, “collaborating with Burton again on the new album was like magic. Everything just fell into place naturally. It felt good to recapture the true sound of FEAR FACTORY, taking it back to where it all started while raising it to new levels.”

"The Industrialist" again pairs Fear Factory with long-time friend Rhys Fulber. Their collaborations together include five albums and two remixes, including the certified gold album Obsolete. “Rhys has been our secret member,” shares Cazares. “He is the one producer who has been able to understand what we have been trying to accomplish from the beginning and has opened our eyes to new things without sacrificing our original sound. His talents in production and keyboard/samples has made FEAR FACTORY stand out amongst the many bands of our genre.” More...
