This Los Angeles, California-based band is one of the few truly innovative acts in death metal, mixing industrial-style electronic rhythms and samples with grinding guitars and harsh vocals to create their own brutal soundscape. Formed in late 1991 with the line-up of Burton C. Bell (vocals), Dino Cazares (guitar, who has an additional side project, Brujeria ), Andrew Shives (bass) and Raymond Herrera (drums), the band rapidly made an impact with two tracks on the LA Death Metal compilation, produced by Faith No More bass player Bill Gould, and subsequently signed to Roadrunner Records.

The Colin Richardson-produced Soul Of A New Machine established Fear Factory as a genuine death metal force, with a good collection of songs delivered with originality and ferocity. Meanwhile, the band set about developing their live show on their debut tour with Brutal Truth in Europe, followed by US dates with Sick Of It All and Biohazard.

Fear Is The Mind Killer, a mini-album of remixes by Canadian industrialists Front Line Assembly, demonstrated further dimensions and possibilities available to the Factory sound by adding an industrial dance edge, bringing the band further acclaim.

Fear Factory Set Upcoming Album Title

Fear Factory have set "Transgression" as the title of their next studio album, tentatively due August 23 via Trillion Records. Trillion is the new imprint from Liquid 8 Records And Entertainment founder and CEO, Mike Cattain, who has created Trillion as a home for Fear Factory and new bands seeking a creative haven grounded in growth.

Fear Factory will enter Track Record Studios in North Hollywood, California on May 5 with producer Toby Wright (Alice In Chains, Korn, Soulfly) to begin recording the follow-up to last year's "Archetype". "We are all very, very excited about the collaboration with Toby," says singer Burton C. Bell. In addition to Toby Wright, there will be a list of guest musicians collaborating on "Transgression", including bass player Billy Gould of Faith No More fame. Burton explains, "Billy brings a different vibe to the music the way his bass lines move around the beat and drive the songs with a unique element." Billy will contribute to two songs: "Echo Of My Scream" and "Super Nova". Other working titles for "Transgression" include "New Promise" (co-written with Mark Morton of Lamb Of God), "Empire", "540,000 Degrees Fahrenheit" and the projected title track.

"It's really cool to be writing a new record," says Burton. "We are all feeling very positive and it's moving quickly since we have overcome some major obstacles. Now we can work on a fucking great album. 2005 is the year of 'Transgression' for Fear Factory!"

You can get a preview of what's to come on "Transgression" when you play the new game "Rainbow Six Lockdown", which features a track from "Transgression" entitled "Lockdown", as well as scores created by Fear Factory throughout the menus. Apart from contributing music to "Rainbow Six Lockdown", drummer Raymond Herrera's production company, 3volution Productions, has produced the soundtrack to the Tom Clancy "Rainbow Six Lockdown" game, which will include Fear Factory tracks and many other songs from various bands, to be released on Calvin/Trillion Records on August 3.

Mustaine Considers New Additions To Gigantour

Lead shredder and singer Dave Mustaine of Megadeth is considering several new additions for an upcoming North American tour; including Diecast, Dry Kill Logic, Otep, Overkill, Pain of Salvation, Taproot, and Symphony X.

Megadeth's "Gigantour" is set to begin in late July with Dream Theatre, Fear Factory, Dillinger Escape Plan and Nevermore. Dillinger Escape Plan will join the tour late, according to Mustaine's forum announcement, and the slot is as-of-yet still open. "There are still many more bands to review, and now I am waiting for their music to be sent."

The band also reports a possible Australia visit. Mustaine said, "It may not be with any of the current line-up of other bands, but at least we are starting the preliminary footwork."

A website for the tour -- named after a 1960's cartoon "Gigantor" -- will be launched next month. This six-week trek will likely be the band's final tour under the Megadeth name.

The thrash metal band were founded in 1983 by former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine.

Nevermore Complete Recordings For New Album

Century Media report that NEVERMORE recently completed the recording process for their new album, This Godless Endeavor, at Backstage Studios in England with legendary producer Andy Sneap (ARCH ENEMY, OPETH). The new offering is currently set for a summer release. This will mark the group’s first recording with guitarist Steve Smyth (ex-TESTAMENT).

Nevermore will embark on massive six-week summer festival tour, dubbed the Gigantour, alongside MEGADETH, DREAM THEATER, FEAR FACTORY and THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN in late July.

Warrel Dane (vocals) further describes his thoughts on the new album and upcoming tour: “We have completed the recording process for This Godless Endeavor and Andy Sneap will finish mixing and mastering the record this week. It was a great experience working with Sneap again and he has really outdone himself on this record. We are also really psyched up for Gigantour. It's great to part of a tour that is focused on musicianship instead of current trends. This summer is going to be great.”

Megadeth's Mustaine Checks In On Gigantour

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the group's official web site:

"I thought I would start to inform you of what you can expect from the Gigantour Festival this summer.

"First off the set times on the main stage will be approximately 90 minutes for MEGADETH and DREAM THEATER each, 45 minutes for FEAR FACTORY, and 30 minutes each for DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and NEVERMORE.

"We are hoping to have a second stage of talent and as of now there is a list of fourty bands that want to be part of this wonderful summer excursion. Each one of those bands would play approximately 20 minutes, excluding the headlining band for the second stage, which would be around 30 minutes.

"We are going to play in many cities that we may have missed last trek, and so far the dates total 32, but that may grow depending on the demand from you, the fans, and from the promoters who believe. More...

Mustaine Hand-Picks Bands For Gigantour

It's called Gigantour, and it's the brainchild of MEGADETH frontman/guitarist Dave Mustaine.

Set to launch in late July, Gigantour is a six-week festival trek co-headlined by MEGADETH and DREAM THEATER, who'll be accompanied by other main-stage acts FEAR FACTORY, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and NEVERMORE. Artists for the second stage will be announced in the coming weeks.

Gigantour follows MEGADETH's sold-out 2004 "Blackmail The Universe" tour in support of 2004's "The System Has Failed" — MEGADETH's tenth studio album — which debuted on the charts at #18 and was critically hailed as a brilliant return to form. Bandmates Glen Drover (guitar), James MacDonough (bass) and Shawn Drover (drums) will once again join Mustaine on the road.

Gigantour — whose moniker was inspired by the classic 1960s cartoon "Gigantor" — will criss-cross North America, with stops in amphitheatres and arenas in cities including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver and Minneapolis, among others. The tour is implementing the "fan-friendly" ticket price of approximately $35 each. Mustaine notes: "I think people may want an affordable alternative to the choices out there — along the lines of a pure music festival — like Monsters of Rock or Clash of the Titans."

Mustaine handpicked the bands for Gigantour, with a focus on musicianship. "There are few very successful tours out each summer and in order to be significant, I knew the first Gigantour had to make an impact with top bands like DREAM THEATER, FEAR FACTORY, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and NEVERMORE." Mustaine wanted to "put together a festival that consisted of positive bands that play heavy music in a high energy environment."

Mustaine comments on the other bands he's chosen for the Gigantour main stage. "I think that the variety of playing styles and the credibility of the different players is really exciting. I'm looking forward to spending time with DREAM THEATER — including my friend Mike Portnoy — while on the road. I think DREAM THEATER is unbelievably talented. I can't wait to see what their set list is going to be for this festival."

Mike Portnoy from DREAM THEATER comments on the band's perspective on the tour: "I think we probably bring some diversity to the bill, because we're kind of like chameleons — we can fit into a lot of different situations. We've done shows in the past with IRON MAIDEN, SLAYER and PANTERA, and then we've also done shows with ELTON JOHN, YES and DEEP PURPLE. I think our fan base is very diverse like that too." Portnoy sees Gigantour as a "kind of a meeting of musicians and metal-heads." He adds: "I've been listening to MEGADETH since day one and always admired them and Dave as an artist — he constantly stuck to his guns and stuck by the music he believes in. MEGADETH are one of the pioneers of the genre." Gigantour marks the first U.S. leg of DREAM THEATER dates in support of their forthcoming release "Octavarium", due out June 7 on Atlantic Records.

Mustaine first toured with FEAR FACTORY in 1994. "I think FEAR FACTORY and THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN are really going to add something different to the tour and bring some new people in." He continues, "The frontman of NEVERMORE [Warrel Dane] used to be in a band called SANCTUARY and I produced their first record."

Mustaine is excited to hit the road and has a positive outlook for Gigantour. "I look forward to watching this develop over the years and seeing how we can turn this into something that's going to stand the test of time. And if this works, and it really works, maybe we'll take it elsewhere."

Stay tuned for tour dates, venues and information about the second-stage bands to be announced soon.

Roadrunner Celebrates 25 Year With All-Stars Album

Roadrunner Records is in the process of putting together a groundbreaking record to mark the label's 25th Anniversary. Tentatively titled "Roadrunner All-Stars", the full length release, a 'master-class' in hard rock, will contain original tracks that are collaborations between past and present Roadrunner stars.

Four central musicians will be chosen to produce and write all the songs. Those chosen thus far are Joey Jordison (Slipknot), Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory/Brujeria) and Robert Flynn (Machine Head). The fourth writer/producer is yet to be named. These four musicians will not only play on the songs they have written but also assemble a unique team of artists to appear on each track. In order to cover as wide a spectrum as possible, no musician will play for more than one writer/producer and each song will feature a different vocalist.

Musicians who have already recorded for this project are Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory/Brujeria), Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), Paul Gray (Slipknot), Roy Mayorga (ex-Soulfly), Logan Mader (ex-Machine Head), Marcelo Dias (ex-Soulfly), Dave McClain (Machine Head), Nadja Peulen (ex-Coal Chamber) and Mike Sarkisyan (Spineshank). Founding Member Dino Cazares Quits Brujeria

Former FEAR FACTORY guitarist Dino Cazares has quit BRUJERIA, the extreme metal project he co-founded 16 years ago.

According to Dino, he made the decision to leave the group in order to spend more time working on a new band he recently formed with ex-DIMMU BORGIR/CRADLE OF FILTH drummer Nick Barker. "Sometimes you have too many projects and one always suffers," Dino explained.

Although BRUJERIA's most recent touring lineup included Barker and bassist Shane Embury (NAPALM DEATH), neither musician will continue to perform with the group, according to Cazares. It is not presently clear if singer John Lepe (a.k.a. Juan Brujo) — the band's sole remaining member — will attempt to carry on with BRUJERIA using replacement musicians.

Formed in 1989, BRUJERIA released four full-length albums through the Roadrunner label and boasted a revolving lineup of high-profile musicians, including former FAITH NO MORE bassist Billy Gould and FEAR FACTORY drummer Raymond Herrera.

Despite his split with BRUJERIA, Cazares will continue his involvement with ASESINO, the BRUJERIA off-shoot project that also features in its ranks STATIC-X bassist Tony Campos on bass/vocals and SADISTIC INTENT drummer Emilio Marquez.

Dino's as-yet-unnamed collaboration with Barker recently recorded a two-song instrumental demo with producer James Murphy (TESTAMENT, DEATH, OBITUARY) and is currently seeking a bassist and singer.

Metal Strikes Back in 2004

An article has been posted on FMQB.com listing the heavy metal moments of 2004, from the formation of new bands to the new releases of older bands. An excerpt from the article:

2004 will definitely be thought of as a year when Metal made an official "come back" in the commercial world. This is not to say that Metal ever went away, but like any genre, it ebbs and flows, and this year brought a tidal wave of good music. The beginning of the year was dominated by strong releases from Iced Earth, Damageplan, the re-united Fear Factory and Dave Grohl's Probot project, which featured Grohl backing up singers like Lemmy from Motorhead and King Diamond.

Large ventricular septal defects cause problems, as the pressure in the right side of the heart decreases, blood will start to flow to the path of least resistance. This leads to congestive heart failure and must be treated. The most important sign of congestive heart failure is the baby's growth.

Such is Raven's case, at birth she weighed 7 lbs. 7 oz. Thousands Gather To Mourn Dimebag Darrell

Several thousand fans and friends gathered at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas, Tuesday night to mourn Damageplan/ Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

The inside of the cavernous convention center was filled with flowers and oversized magazine covers featuring Abbott, according to The Dallas Morning News. Among the musicians on hand to pay tribute were guitarists Zakk Wylde and Eddie Van Halen.

"I'm here for the same reason as everyone else, to give some love back," said Van Halen, who, along with Wylde, reportedly downed shots of booze as he spoke.

"This guy was full of life. He lived and breathed rock and roll." Van Halen held his cell phone up to the microphone and played a profanity-laced message left by an excited Abbott after a concert he played with Van Halen.

"I just wanted to give you a ... call to tell you thank you so ... much, man, for the most awesome, uplifting, euphoric, spiritual rock and roll extravaganza ever," Abbott said in the message to Van Halen, according to reports.

"A whole part of my life is gone," said Wylde, described as red-eyed and visibly upset. More...

Fear Factory Song Connected To Murder?

Rocky Mountain News reports that the Fear Factory song "Bite the Hand that Bleeds" could be tied to a murder:

Westminster police have identified a murder victim found naked with her hands severed as Catrina Renee Powell. Her body was found early on the morning of Oct. 25 behind the Country Meadows shopping plaza in the 7500 block of Sheridan Boulevard.

The night before Powell's body was found, four heavy-metal bands played at the Ogden Theater near where she was last seen. Carlson said Monday that police have explored which bands were appearing at the concert venue at the time and were aware of the heavy-metal show.

One of the bands in the show, Fear Factory, was promoting a new song titled "Bite the Hand that Bleeds." That song, according to the band's Web site, is featured in a recently released film Saw, which features a maniacal killer known as "Jigsaw." That song's lyrics contain the refrain: "One more drop of blood I spill/ one more drop you take/ one more drop and I will spite/ and bite the hand that bleeds."

When asked about that song Monday, Carlson said investigators were not aware of the Fear Factory song and didn't know if it could have any connection to the case.

"To say it might have some significance - perhaps. I couldn't discount it. Perhaps, at the same time, maybe it was just a coincidence. To say it's actually tied in, who knows?" Carlson said.

Fear Factory, Lamb of God Vancouver Show Report

Being one of my favourite bands, the minute I found out that Children of Bodom was coming to town again, I thought to myself that I definitely had to go see them this time. And not only did I get to see them live, I also got to interview their bass player, Henkka. I was supposed to interview Mark Morton from Lamb of God too. But unfortunately, due to some complications, I was unable to.

The doors to the Commodore Ballroom opened at 7. Throwdown went on stage at 7:45. They weren't bad for an opening band. I was impressed by how much energy they've got and how they got everyone jumping up and down in the circle pit they've created. Rumour has it that there are tires under the floor of the Commodore so that it adds bounce...or something like that. More...
