Background

This Los Angeles, California-based band is one of the few truly innovative acts in death metal, mixing industrial-style electronic rhythms and samples with grinding guitars and harsh vocals to create their own brutal soundscape. Formed in late 1991 with the line-up of Burton C. Bell (vocals), Dino Cazares (guitar, who has an additional side project, Brujeria ), Andrew Shives (bass) and Raymond Herrera (drums), the band rapidly made an impact with two tracks on the LA Death Metal compilation, produced by Faith No More bass player Bill Gould, and subsequently signed to Roadrunner Records.

The Colin Richardson-produced Soul Of A New Machine established Fear Factory as a genuine death metal force, with a good collection of songs delivered with originality and ferocity. Meanwhile, the band set about developing their live show on their debut tour with Brutal Truth in Europe, followed by US dates with Sick Of It All and Biohazard.

Fear Is The Mind Killer, a mini-album of remixes by Canadian industrialists Front Line Assembly, demonstrated further dimensions and possibilities available to the Factory sound by adding an industrial dance edge, bringing the band further acclaim.

Fear Factory: Archetype Is The Best We Can Offer

FEAR FACTORY drummer Raymond Herrera has told MorningNewsOnline.com that, contrary to popular belief, the songwriting process for the group's new album, "Archetype", did not have a more relaxed atmosphere now that the tensions toward former guitarist Dino Cazares, who was a major songwriting contributor, have been removed.

"I wouldn't say the songwriting process was much different than in the past," Herrera said. "We all worked on the songs together this time, though. Christian [Olde Wolbers, guitars] and I write the songs, and we get into each other's head. Songwriting is what we do."

"I wouldn't say it was any less stressful because there's always stress when you're writing and coming up with new stuff. There's stress no matter what job you have. Being on tour is much easier for me."

With regards to the suggestion that the lyrics on "Archetype" have a more personal approach than in the past, Herrera said,

"People are saying, 'It's more personal.' To me, all of our music has been personal. This is the album we've always wanted to make, however. This is the best FEAR FACTORY has to offer. It's new, but we've wanted to go back and recapture what we think FEAR FACTORY is all about."

FEAR FACTORY's new album, "Archetype", is scheduled for release on April 20 through Liquid 8 Records (parent company of D3 Entertainment). The follow-up to 2001's critically panned "Digimortal" was recorded at Rumbo Recorders in Los Angeles with engineer Ken Marshall (SKINNY PUPPY) and was mixed in Vancouver with Greg Reely (MACHINE HEAD, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DEVILDRIVER). The video for "Cyberwaste" was shot in early February in Perth, Australia and was premiered last weekend on MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball".
