ProgPower USA XIV: Saturday Crazies

Carrying the energy over from ProgPower XIV’s Friday show to Saturday’s show was like a Herculean trial for me, running on a combined total of 6 hours sleep from the last two days. In the quiet of dawn, nobody from ProgPower: Hardcore, the unofficial fitness group, was awake enough to run or work out, but not for lack of effort -- They had put in a good run and hot yoga session earlier in the week. (Only at ProgPower, folks.) Fortunately, each of the seven bands on the second day’s roster brought its game face and gave me and the other concert-goers what we needed to raise our bodies, put our hands in the air, bang our heads, jump (if you really enjoyed Sabaton), and fall in love all over again.

After descending upon Einstein Bagel Co at the end of Peachtree St for breakfast with my group of fellow black-shirted friends, which brought a few funny reactions from the locals, we headed down to The Loft next to Center Stage to see Wolverine’s exclusive all-acoustic set for Gold Badge holders and sponsors only. Having rehearsed well in advance, Wolverine was a well-oiled machine, although the same could not be said for the guitar cables that seemed to be shorting out on them by the dozen. Nevertheless, the show was to be unforgettable. Drawing heavily from “Communication Lost,” perhaps the easiest Wolverine album to translate to an acoustic setting, the show took the form of a sort of “Storytellers” gig.

The typical routine they followed went something like this: Vocalist Stefan Zell or bassist Thomas Jansson would give a background and context to a song, they would play it through, Jansson or keyboardist Per Henriksson would take a passionate but subdued solo, Zell would light up the air with his voice, and the crowd would weep. It’s true -- one attendee brought a box of tissues with her, which the band autographed after the performance, for members of the audience that couldn’t help but resonate with the song. The whole performance gave the impression of a slow burn -- warm and electrifying. A special set, indeed. More...

It can be a daunting festival, price- and endurance-wise, but it’s one that should be considered if the genres it derives its name from at all turn your head. Here’s what you can expect from this year’s celebration of the fast and the nerdy down at Center Stage in Atlanta, Georgia, starting on September 4th. More...

"The follow up to 2007's critically admired concept album 'Isolate,' 'Nine' delivers ten monolithic tracks of advanced metal featuring layers of gargantuan guitars, supercharged synths, soaring vocals and heavyweight hooks that will surely find appeal with fans of Opeth, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensryche, Fates Warning and more."

Drummer Truls Haugen added, "The majority of the material on the new record was written by (guitarist) Mats Haugen and he has taken the music to a kind of simpler and more accessible approach, yet kept the progressive elements and the 'nerve' that is Circus Maximus. We're actually both heavier and more melodic on this new record than we've ever been. After all this time we are ready to unleash our new monster!"

Circus Maximus Announces New Album

Circus Maximus has announced the band's new album "Nine" will be released this coming June on Frontiers Records. The label issued the following statement:

"Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of the anticipated third album from Norwegian Progsters Circus Maximus entitled 'Nine' on June 1st in Europe and June 5th in North America.Five years after the successful release of the concept album 'Isolate,' this time Circus Maximus are back with a strong and mature cd.

"Circus Maximus spent anyway their time also working hard to further refining their sound. With 'Nine' they are poised to take their place alongside the upper echelon of Progressive Metal bands. The band’s musical formula is not easy to accomplish – take jaw dropping musicianship, add a singer like Michael Eriksen with a voice from heaven and toss it together with hooks, anthemic melodies and enough groove and heavy riffing that really gets into your head."

"A lot happened in our personal lives during the past few years," explains drummer Truls Haugen. "Three of us had kids, plus we also had a several bumps in the road with the production. So it has not exactly been a joyride, but it feels great to finally be done, and after all this time we are ready to unleash our new monster!" More...

Pagan's Mind Vocalist To Miss Tour Dates

Pagan's Mind vocalist Nils K. Rue has checked in with the following announcement about missing three upcoming shows:

"Dear friends, as you might know, we are off to do the 'Revelation to 2012' European tour together with Symphony X on Wednesday 28th of September, and travel for over three weeks covering most of Western Europe. We can´t wait to see you all again, it will be a blast!

"Due to unforeseen circumstances that popped up just a few weeks ago and can not be solved in a different way, I won´t be able to do three of the shows. I will do the shows in Hamburg and Bochum (the first two dates of the tour), but the next three German gigs (C-Club in Berlin, Colos-Saal in Aschaffenburg and Backstage Halle in Munich) will be with someone else behind the microphone. This is the first time ever I have had to ask for help, but this is the only solution right now as I don't want the band to cancel these important shows. And hopefully - though I know we have found the right solution - it will be the last time I need assistance. More...

Circus Maximus Comments On Recording Delays

Circus Maximus has checked in with the following update about delays in the band's recording process for new material:

"As many of you have been wondering, what has been, or is going on in the CM camp these days? What is the status on the recording on the new album? Well... To give you the short and brutal version, here is where we are today:

"After finishing the drum tracks in November, the band took the Christmas holidays off, presuming to start up right over new years with drum editing, and continue with guitar, bass, keys and vocals right after that. What we didn't plan out as a result of Mats' grueling long hours in front of the computer, editing drums, was that he got arm inflammation in both arms. Because of this, both the drum editing (that was over half ways finished), and upcoming rhythm guitar tracking had to be postponed until further notice. With this, and other personal/family stuff that had to be dealt with, the recording process stagnated quite a bit.

"On a positive note: Mats' arm injury has improved a great deal, and the drum-editing is finished, the band has been rehearsing for their upcoming shows in May and we are filming more for the 'Rockumentary' this weekend up in the mountains of Trysi (Guess there will be more drunken madness than interviews, because it's Mikey's birthday as well).

"We are glad to tell you all that things are looking better nowadays with the speed bumps and hickups out of the way, and that we will be putting the 'pedal to the metal' on the recordings from mid May. Circus Maximus is truly grateful for all the support that has been shown, as well as your patience and understanding. There wouldn't be a Circus Maximus without you, the fans. That makes you a little Circus Maximus too... hehe."

You can also check out footage of the band recording new material at this location.

Circus Maximus Issues Recording Update

Circus Maximus has issued the following update about recording new material:

"Guess we´ll give it another go. We had some setbacks because of the studio we booked was not available when we hoped and the backup-plan of recording in our rehearsal room failed. So, now we´ve booked an amazing studio on a little remote island in Norway called Giske.

"If this doesn´t give us a creative boost I don´t know what will? The drums will be recorded here from November 15th with help from former Animal Alpha guitarist and Truls´longtime friend, Christian Wibe at the helm. It´s on! (for real this time)."

Kamelot Postponing North American Tour

Kamelot had previously announced the band would be recruiting Michael from Circus Maximus to fill in for Kamelot vocalist Roy, who has fallen ill, during the band's upcoming North American tour. Kamelot has now issued the following update about postponing the tour instead:

"Hi Kamelot Nation. As many of you know, Roy has fallen ill and could not make the North American tour. We have been rehearsing like madmen here in Tampa -- the band is tighter than ever and Michael from Circus Maximus is truly an amazing singer; if there is one male vocalist in this world who is on par with Roy, it is Michael! However, after today's rehearsal, we all decided that we do not feel right about doing the North American tour as anything less than a 100% Kamelot Experience.

"We appreciate that many fans have waited more than 2 years for new material and to see us perform together. Our new album, 'Poetry for the Poisoned' represents a labor of love from us, and to present it at anything less than full strength seems a disservice to all involved. Though we will suffer financial losses on this late hour cancellation, we still feel it’s the right decision for us as a band to make – we regret disappointing all those who worked so hard to shape this tour, and especially those fans who were still so willing to come through and support us despite Roy’s absence. We are humbled by that type of support, and we sincerely hope that our return in full form Kamelot strength will be more reward for your unwavering loyalty!

"We will reschedule all shows in the near future, once Roy is able to return. Refunds can be obtained at the point of purchase. To thank Michael for his effort, the band will still appear at the soldout Progpower Festival, as a one off show with him and many special guest singers from the festival. Again, we want to thank all of you for your amazing support!!"
