Just For Fun

The 8 Bit Metal Weekend Roundup

Remember those classic blocky, 8-bit tunes that got stuck in your head while playing Mega Man or Breath of Fire all Saturday afternoon as a kid? Turns out they are also the perfect medium for experiencing the best metal has to offer, and many fans online have converted their favorite tunes into 8-bit format. There are probably hundreds or even thousands of these online, and today we'll share two interesting ones worth hearing.

Fist up is a recreation of Augury's "Brimstone Landscapes" from "Fragmentary Evidence" (reviewed here), a progressive/technical death metal album that is now becoming long, looong overdue for a follow-up release. While for some reason the drums seem to have been dropped from the 8 bit version, this is still a pretty faithful reproduction of the original in old school video game form.

For comparison, here's the original track: More...

Vengeful Posts Album Progress Update

Canada's Vengeful has checked in with the following update about the band's upcoming album:

"Greetings! Time to let the outside in on what's been happening in our world.....

"We've just started mixing our new album for which we actually have a title but we'll save it for another post. Hugues Deslauriers (Augury) is now back on board to assure that this offering is as in-your-face as can be. We would also like to take this opportunity to announce the return of Olivier Pinard (Neuraxis) in our ranks. Is presence was definately missing during is time apart from Vengeful.

"There has been a few hickups with the painting that will become the album's cover but our long time illustrator Martin Lacroix is putting the finishing touches to the masterpiece in his vast body of work to this date. Needless to say everything is looking pretty fuckin' sick. The album should be released at the end of November/begining of December. An official date will follow.

"Death keeps on striking hard lately."

Three of Nuclear Blast’s best took a free day off from their huge tour with Soilwork to play in New Orleans, and we were very grateful. Although it was a Sunday (even the heaviest metallers have day jobs) many showed up to see Death Angel, who have not visited our swampy soil in decades. I was able to tape the first few songs of Death Angel’s set for your viewing pleasure. More...

Soilwork Announces Tour with Death Angel

Swedish modern metallers Soilwork will embark on a North American headlining tour this summer with Bay Area thrash legends Death Angel. Joining them will be Quebec’s tech-death masters Augury, Roadrunner Records recording artists Mutiny Within, and pirate themed thrashers Swashbuckle.

Soilwork vocalist Bjorn “Speed” Strid commented: "We are stoked to tour with the most vicious thrashers from the west, famous for their gin drinking and intense live shows. Death Angel is a classic band that we've wanted to tour with for a long time. A perfect fit for the bill and surely an awesome touring companion. The summer of mosh is upon us. Don't miss out!"

Death Angel frontman Mark Osegueda added: “I can't begin to tell you how excited we are about the upcoming tour! I first heard Soilwork on a Nuclear Blast promo compilation and they stood out from the first listen. The riffs, the drumming, and Bjorn's vocal attack! Then we were fortunate enough to play with them at With Full Force Festival a few years back and they killed it live! As fate would have it, I was asked to participate in a Nuclear Blast 20 Year Anniversary compilation album called Out of the Dark, which Peter Wichers wrote the music for. I wrote the lyrics and melody for a song on that compilation called ‘My Name is Fate’! Peter actually was also the producer, so I was fortunate enough to get to work with him in the studio! What a brilliant guy and and a great musician and now that he is back in the fold Soilwork is back on top of their game. I think the musical styles and live performances of both bands will make every show on this tour a show not to be missed by any true fan of HEAVY music! So don't just hear about the aftermath, experience it for yourself!”

Augury lead singer/guitar player Patrick Loisel: “We are very proud to be part of such a great tour with Soilwork, perform alongside legends such as Death Angel (a band whom I covered in my old bands), and join our brothers in Swashbuckle again. It's quite a thrill!”

Soilwork and Death Angel have now added a special event VIP ticket for a pre-show meet-and-greet to take place one hour before doors. Each night, fans will get to meet and greet Soilwork and Death Angel for a special event that is being offered. Fans will also receive a customized poster to get signed by both bands. These special VIP tickets are on sale now at EnterTheVault.com.

Vengeful Recruits Former Augury Bassist

Canadian metallers Vengeful have issued the following update about recruiting former Augury bassist Dominic "Forest" Lapointe:

"Hello everyone! Short post to inform that Dominic 'Forest' Lapointe has joined Vengeful. Some of you might know him for is work with bands such as: Atheretic, Barf, Quo Vadis and Augury. Vengeful is more than eager to add is talents to the band's sound and his unmistakable presence on stage.

"On that note, we just wrote our first song together and things are sounding a bit more chaotic as we never had a bass player in the room while putting new stuff together. More on that later.....We'll be hitting the stage with the new lineup soon to get the chemistry flowing a bit more before we finish composing this monster of an album we're working on. So thanks a bunch to all our supporters and friends that showed up early to catch us with Kataklysm, sorry for the sound quality but that stuff happens when you the opener. We still had a blast! Until next time checkout Immolation's and High on fire's latest releases!"

Augury Parts Ways With Drummer

Montreal based technical death metallers Augury have announced the departure of their drummer Antoine Baril.

Antoine Baril commented:

"I’m very sad to have to announce my departure from Augury. Some personal and professional reasons have made multiple tours impossible for me at the moment. I wish all the best for Augury because those wonderful guys are making incredibly good music. I will never forget those memorable shows and I would like to thank everyone for their support on the road everywhere we've been on tour."

Augury also commented:

"Augury thanks Antoine for all the good times and excellent music, and we wish him well in all aspects of his life. He will remain a close friend for all of us. For the upcoming tour with Vader, drummer Robin ‘Frog’ Stone from Australian industrial metal mad scientists The Amenta will take over the drum throne.
