The organisers of the British leg of the Sonisphere festival have announced that they have had to cancel this years event, which was set to feature headline performances from KISS, Faith No More and Queen + Adam Lambert, amongst others. The statement from the organisers reads as follows:
"It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012.
"Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect. More...

William Shatner posted a hysterical official video for his rendition of Queen's classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," which appears on his latest music album "Seeking Major Tom." The song features John Wetton (King Crimson/Asia). "Seeking Major Tom" was released on October 11, 2011 via Cleopatra Records.

Current Queen member Paul Rodgers has posted the following statement online regarding the passing of legendary guitarist Gary Moore:
"Gary was a friend and a truly great man. I respect that he played the game his way... no time for B.S. He was focused and passionate about music and was one of the best.
"The last time that I jammed with Gary, he came on as my special guest at London's Royal Albert Hall and proceeded to take it to another level... the place imploded! When he played, he was a man on fire.
"If there hadn't been an ocean between us and Gary didn't mind flying, we absolutely would have created more together. We've lost a great British blues man and I am very, very sad."

Like so many others in the hard rock and heavy metal community, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake and others have posted messages online paying their respects to heavy metal icon Ronnie James Dio, who sadly passed away yesterday morning in Los Angeles from stomach cancer. The tributes read as follows:
Iron Maiden: "It is with huge sadness we hear that Ronnie has lost his battle against stomach cancer, and our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Wendy and family at this terrible time. From his earlier years in Elf, Black Sabbath and Dio, right through to his most recent days fronting Heaven and Hell, Ronnie, time and again, proved his genius as a frontman, always giving his all to his fans and his music. Ronnie was not only an incredibly gifted singer but also a wonderfully warm, intelligent and generous person and this shone through both on and off stage leaving a positive mark on everyone he came into contact with. A longstanding friend of Maiden, we played many shows together over the years and we will all miss him greatly. The world has lost an irreplaceable talent and, first and foremost, one of the finest human beings you could ever wish to meet."
Whitesnake's David Coverdale: "So very sad to hear of Ronnie's passing... My thoughts, prayers and condolence to his family and friends." More...

The rock video game war will heat up again in the fall: both of the industry’s flagship series are hitting consumers with tantalizing titles in 9/09. Harmonix’s THE BEATLES: Rock Band arrives September 9th, and now Activision has confirmed Guitar Hero 5 is due September 1st. The game will boast 85 brand-new master recordings, and this week Activision is announcing the band lineup in a series of scavenger hunt-like stories; fans who track down all the featured artists can enter a sweepstakes to win five tickets to concerts at a venue of their choice.
Rolling Stone can exclusively reveal that tracks from QUEEN & DAVID BOWIE (presumably 'Under Pressure'), KINGS OF LEON, SANTANA, SONIC YOUTH and A PERFECT CIRCLE will appear in the game. The title will also come equipped with tunes by WEEZER, BON JOVI, BILLY JOEL, ELLIOT SMITH and THE BRONX.

Queen guitarist Brian May is disappointed after learning his contribution to the new Guns N' Roses album was dropped by frontman Axl Rose.
May teamed up with the band in 1999 to collaborate on track "Catcher N' The Rye" for their long awaited new LP, "Chinese Democracy," which has been 14 years in the making.
But May recently found out that his efforts have been removed from the final version of the song.
He says, "It is a shame. I was proud of it."
"Chinese Democracy" will be out November 23rd through Black Frog/Geffen Records, and exclusively through Best Buy stores in the USA.

Gerry "Jerry" Phillips, a self-described "manualist" or "hand musician" who has been playing songs on his hands for 38 years, has posted his rendition of the OZZY OSBOURNE classic "Crazy Train" on YouTube. Watch that clip, along with some of Gerry's other "classics," below.
Phillips writes on his YouTube page: "People ask me why I play music on my hands. The answer is, because I can! When I was 9 years old, I went to a party. The photographer (to keep us quiet) farted with his hands. I could do it right away. I soon found notes, then simple songs, now I can play just about everything. I'm happy making videos and featuring them on YouTube where people like you can see them! I don't expect everyone to like what I do, but if you think about it, there is no new music. Everything has been done in one way or another. But I am new and different. Singing, humming, whistling and playing an instrument are not the only ways of making music. The only people who have ever truly appreciated what I do are musicians. They tell me in terms I don't understand what I have just done. I just play the song! I think what they think is cool is that i don't have to pack up and drag equipment! What I am interested in doing is performing to a large live audience just to see their reaction and to play a song with some of my heroes who wrote and performed my favorite songs." More...

Launch Radio Networks reports: Things continue to move forward with QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS, as the group has been working on some new material for the past few months. Fans have wondered how the sessions are going, and guitarist Brian May recently responded on his official BrianMay.com web site by writing, "I don't really feel it's right to get into too many details at this point, but, as things stand, in the recent QUEEN/RODGERS sessions, all three of us (May, Rodgers, and drummer Roger Taylor) have played some bass! (me most of all)." May added, "Whether the tracks will end up that way, I'm not sure — we may invite someone in at some point, but for the purposes of getting our heads together, and evolving not only songs, but ways of creating, it has worked out well just having the three of us, so far."
There's been no word yet on when the new material might surface, or when the group might tour again. Rodgers currently has a handful of solo dates booked in the U.S. in April and May.
Who are the best singers in heavy metal history? According to Hit Parader magazine, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin and Rob Halford from Judas Priest are the two best men for the job. The magazine has published their list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists," and the editors said, "Assembling our list certainly presented a daunting task, considering the breadth and scope of the metal empire during its 35-year reign as rock's most powerful and enduring force. We tried our best not to turn this into some sort of popularity contest where only the most famous (or infamous) frontmen in metal lore were recognized."
Most names included in the list are neither metal singers nor performers in a metal band. They are Queen's Freddie Mercury, the Who's Roger Daltrey, Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones, Ann Wilson from Heart, Kurt Cobain from Nirvana, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Ray Davies from the Kinks, Joan Jett, Steve Marriott from the Small Faces and Humble Pie, and Steve Perry from Journey.
The Hit Parader Top 10 Singers:
1) Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin
2) Rob Halford from Judas Priest
3) Steven Tyler from Aerosmith
4) Chris Cornell from Audioslave and Soundgarden
5) Bon Scott from AC/DC
6) Freddie Mercury from Queen
7) Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden
8) Ozzy Osbourne from Black Sabbath
9) Paul Rodgers from Free, Bad Company, and the Firm
10) Ronnie James Dio from Rainbow and Black Sabbath
