Tribute To The Lesser Played Halloween Classics

So its Halloween yet again….and for some reason it just doesn’t seem as scary and wonderful as it used to be. Maybe its age….maybe it’s the state of the world….perhaps it’s just desensitization or my state of mind. Though its still my favorite time of year, Halloween used to be "special," mainly due to the fact that I bought into this notion that Halloween is the “world holiday of metal.” Not unlike horror films, metal used to have a creep factor in the 80's that seems all too polished and mechanical in 2014. For me, it's the only time when severely under-produced records can have a massive shock value.

On the topic of special Halloween memories over the years, I distinctly remember 1986 – when Slayer had just released what is arguably the greatest thrash metal album of our time just 24 days prior to Halloween. I begged my parents for money to buy it just around a day or two before Halloween…and it literally scared the crap out of me as a 15 year old kid. Every Halloween in that time, back when more people used to celebrate it with open doors, family, friends and I used to walk 5-7 miles – filling multiple pillow cases with candy…only to return home and dump it on the floor before switching costumes to go out for another 2-3 miles before all the lights went out in the neighborhood precisely at 8:30pm. 1986 was particularly memorable because the topic of discussion was “Reign in Blood.” My friends and I gasped in terror conjured by the album mostly because it was so "rebellious" and clashed directly (and indirectly) with our Roman Catholic upbringing. These were days before we reached the age of reason. More...

Force Of Evil Goes On Hiatus

FORCE OF EVIL, the Danish band featuring guitarist Michael Denner (ex-MERCYFUL FATE), guitarist Hank Shermann (MERCYFUL FATE), bassist Hal Patino (KING DIAMOND), drummer Bjarne Holm (MERCYFUL FATE), and vocalist Martin Steene (ex-IRONFIRE), has issued the following update:

"Good news for vinyl collectors: 'Black Empire' [originally released in 2005] is now available in a vinyl gatefold version. Only 500 copies made. The vinyl version of 'Black Empire' is now available from eBay.

"Other updates: The band is hibernating right now, and at this point we can't give more specifics about the bands future. All members are and have been quite busy with other things during the past years. Michael Denner has been recording guitars on a progressive rock album called 'Taylor's Universe With Michael Denner'. Martin Steene is active with recordings for a new IRON FIRE album as well as a new album with NIGHTLIGHT. Hal Patino is assisting his son Jackie Patino in getting his band MARY ANN COTTON established. Hal is also playing bass in the new heavy metal band DISASTERPIECE featuring members from KING DIAMOND and CRIMSON GLORY. Bjarne T. Holm is always on the go playing the drums for different bands in Copenhagen. And this spring Hank is launching his solo output called Hank Shermann's DEMONICA. The style is raw thrash and metal."

Force Of Evil Guitarist Talks About Influences

In an interview with Electricbasement.com, FORCE OF EVIL guitarist HANK SHERMANN downplays his other band's influence on black metal, "I don't see us [MERCYFUL FATE] as being originators in the genre really, other than regarding King's [KING DIAMOND] lyrics and stage presence. Musically we were inspired by other bands such as Judas Priest. I think it's really King Diamond's lyrics and stage presence that has inspired a lot of Black Metal bands, plus our songs have a lot of cool atmospheres that maybe a lot of bands like to imitate."

Regarding his own influences, he had high praise for MICHAEL SCHENKER's "timing and tone", but was disappointed when seeing him live, "...I did have the privilege of seeing him with Uli Roth and [Joe] Satriani on the G3 tour. I believe it was in Copenhagen. For me it was seeing Uli Roth as he was very professional, a serious performer, Schenker was in pretty bad shape, and he couldn't even perform. He had to sit down, it was a load of crap. I know {Mercyful Fate, Force of Evil guitarist] Michael Denner saw him in 1975 in UFO around the time of Force It . He thought it was amazing."
