Killing Floor 2 Releases Free Content Update

Killing Floor 2 - a game recently covered in our look at video games with heavy metal soundtracks - just had a new content pack released titled "Incinerate 'N Detonate," which expands the game's original content by 50%. Check out a trailer below.

It's sort of an odd way to go about releasing content, since the game is technically still in early access and hasn't even been "officially" released (despite the fact that anyone can buy and play it), but more content is a good thing, and the all Solid State Records lineup on the soundtrack is an excellent backdrop to the insane gore system where every part of the Zeds can be dismembered or blown apart.

Killing Floor 2 is actually currently available on a "free weekend" through Steam, where Steam users can play the game at no cost through Sunday. Download and give it a try right here.

OpEd

Why Isn't There More Heavy Metal In Video Games?

Considering the huge potential for crossover between metal and gaming fans, it's always baffled me that there aren't more heavy metal focused video game soundtracks. Rather than going for sounds that make the player bang their heads and launch their controller through the television, most games – even highly action focused ones – tend to stick with more tepid ambient soundtracks based on electronica. Techno is about as “heavy” as most game soundtracks tend to get.

This week we're going to take a look at a handful of games that buck that trend and offer up honest-to-Lucifer extreme metal in their playlists. Not an exhaustive list (and we'll be looking at more in the future), this is just a few that are worth your time and are notable for their inclusion of tracks from excellent metal bands or for having original soundtracks rooted strongly in the metal tradition.

Brutal Legend

This one's a no-brainer, as it's essentially THE heavy metal video game, created solely to celebrate our beloved genre. Eddie may be a lowly roadie, but through the power of metal (and a battleax, wicked car, and some magic powers) he can annihilate the goths, please the gods, and get the girl (or two).

Although it seems like a gimmick to get heavy music fans interested, the gameplay is actually really solid and revolves around three different styles: strategy large-scale combat as a general over an army, open world GTA car driving shenanigans, and elements of combat-heavy action games like God of War or Dante's Inferno

The game features more than 100 metal tracks (some of which have to be unlocked in-game) covering a huge range of sub-genres with everything from In Flames to Cradle Of Filth, along with a whole lot of classics from the likes of Motorhead and Judas Priest.

Demon Hunter Posts "I Will Fail You" Video

Demon Hunter has a new video out now for the ballad “I Will Fail You,” premiering today via Billboard.com. Check it out below. "I Will Fail You" comes off the band's new album "Extremist," which is out now.

As vocalist Ryan Clark tells Billboard, “I Will Fail You” is about the scrutiny that a band like Demon Hunter tends to face from fans and critics alike.

“To put it simply, some fans of faith-based bands see it as their duty to police the legitimacy of a band’s values in every aspect imaginable,” Clark explains. “No matter how many times we blatantly express our beliefs, there will always be someone ready to destroy their collection of Demon Hunter albums if they suspect we’re not as ‘holy’ as they’ve managed to project.

“The video itself is a study in judgement and forgiveness. There will undoubtedly be people that find it more alarming that my character smokes a ‘last cigarette’ than what transpires at the end of the video, which in itself, exemplifies the issues that the song is meant to tackle in the first place.” More...

Demon Hunter Comments On Bin Laden Raid

Demon Hunter has issued a statement about a recent Esquire article dealing with the member of the Seal team who reportedly shot and killed Osama Bin Laden wearing a Demon Hunter patch during the raid on Bin Laden's compound. The band comments:

"As you can imagine, our inboxes and phones (and those of our representatives) have been flooded with messages asking us how we feel about the Esquire article on the raid that brought Osama Bin Laden to justice that began circulating yesterday. Specifically, the person identified in the story as 'The Shooter' said that Seal Team 6 wore the Demon Hunter emblem on their uniforms and 'I wore it when I blasted Bin Laden.'

"Over the years, we have been overwhelmed by the personal (and unofficial) emails and letters we've received from members of the US military. We have been humbled and honored by the troops who've told us our music has offered them some comfort while overseas, while missing loved ones, while doing what they do best in order to keep America safe and protect the freedoms we enjoy. We've met many servicemen and women at our shows and they've shared their stories with us in person, as well. We wrote 'The Soldier's Song' back in 2005 to pay tribute to these folks who've reached out to us. We included one such veteran among the Demon Hunter fans we profiled in our documentary film, 45 Days.

"We have seen our symbol, a demon skull with a bullet hole in its forehead, tattooed on fans around the world. We've seen it made into sculptures, painted onto motorcycles, even spray-painted onto tanks and military planes. We often post these pictures on our Facebook page when we receive them. One such email, a few years ago, came from a special operations team who had crafted homemade Demon Hunter patches and put them on their uniforms. They asked us if it was OK if they did this and we of course told them 'YES' because we are unapologetic supporters of our troops. In the last 24 hours, we have come to believe this team who contacted us a few years ago must have been Seal Team 6. More...
