Samael Signs With Napalm Records

Swiss industrial black metal pioneers Samael just signed a worldwide record deal with Napalm Records! The band is working on a new album, which will be released later in 2017.

Founded in 1987 as an old school black metal act that was influenced by the likes of Bathory, fellow countrymen Celtic Frost, and Venom, the brothers Vorph and Xy later developed the band's style further towards a more industrial dark metal sound that found its high peak in those legendary album such as "Passage" and "Eternal."

Napalm's A&R Sebastian Münch states: "I could not be prouder! Today we would like to announce the worldwide signing of the Swiss cult band Samael! Samae has created some of the most lethal and authentic Black Metal albums with 'Blood Ritual' and 'Ceremony of Opposites'! With a more industrial approach later on, masterpieces likes 'Passage' and 'Eternal' saw the light of day! To make a long story short, Samael are musical geniuses and we are happy to continue, together, this success story! Welcome to the Napalm family!"

The band on comments the signing to Napalm Records and future endeavors: "We're thrilled to announce that we've tightened the knot with Napalm Records for the release of our new album! We're looking forward to this exciting alliance for what will undoubtedly be the most important record in the S A M A E L history! More...

Fall Of Summer Reveals Final Band Additions

The Fall Of Summer team is proud to announce the last seven bands of the third edition's line up. The festival's organizers comment:

"So we will start with two bands from the 70s. For the first one, formed in 1972 if you don't recall their name, you will certainly remember their music, as the Italian progressive rock band Claudio Simonetti's Goblin is known for their soundtrack work for films like 'Suspiria,' 'Dawn of the Dead,' 'Profondo Rosso' and we know already that their performance on the Blackwater stage with it's natural amphitheater, the video screening and the lake behind will be one of the highlights of the festival.

"Another band you would be a fool to miss and we are glad to announce is Riot V. If you search for heavy speed ,etal at its best don't search further and just enjoy a pure metal moment with a band that hasn't played in France for so long that we had to do something.

"Let's move to the 80's with two great and solid bands who have always been a reference in their countries, with Heavy Metal french representatives ADX and polish death metal masters Vader. Two bands that don't need introduction and who will as always provide a kick ass gig.

"If we now look at the 90's, we are thrilled to remind you the birth of funeral doom in Finland and announce that, one of its pioneers, Skepticism will join us, or another crucial band that we needed to bring to Fall Of Summer and to France for the first time. More...

Metal Must Evolve

My biggest issue with metal in the 2010s is that in contrast to the past three decades, there's just a lack of creativity. Newer metalcore is being increasingly influenced by nu-metal and post-hardcore as the new musicians who are in their 20s and 30s are now playing music that's entirely an amalgam of what they grew up with as teens rather than creating anything new.

Blackgaze was novel for the first few years but now feels like the light beer version of black metal at this point that doesn't have the same edge that metal is supposed to have. I'm not sure if I want black metal to have a kinder, gentler, dare I say, “cuddlier” face when compared to the antisocial behavior that defined the second wave. When I hear a band like Alcest or Deafheaven, I don't feel like these are maniacs with serious mental issues precisely because it sounds way too calculated and professional for my aging ears.

Djent is nice but often feels too monotonous to really do justice to how technical it is. For, “progressive metal” the songwriting lacks the same level of unexpected changes in direction that make progressive rock acts like Rush and Yes so appealing. Yeah, Djent is heavy but it's also often predicable when unconventional songwriting is half of what separates metal and makes it so special and unique. Blackened sludge on the othe rhand is only going to appeal to people who want extremely raw production... who will never be great enough in number to establish a trend rather than a fad. More...

70,000 Tons Of Metal, Day Two: "The Marathon Day"

I woke around 7am – excited for what was not only the first full day of the cruise…but what I hoped would be the most concerts I’ve ever attended in any single day of my life. It was all mapped out…but the question is – would the pool deck be ready?

I headed up to Deck 12 to assess the situation…and once I made it to the yellow police tape, I realized – here we go again. In 2015, the high winds at sea forced the crew to abandon building the pool deck stage (the largest at sea) until the morning. It took them until 6pm to get it ready for Soulfly’s set, forcing all other shows to be reworked indoors. This year, the plan going in seemed to be to rework the shows where available – likely at the end of the evening within the venues inside. I recalled my joke to Siegfried Sammer of Visions of Atlantis – “I’ll see you at 10am…IF – and that’s a big IF…the pool deck is ready.” Well, it appears the jinx was on because Visions of Atlantis would be bumped to Saturday. The guard told me that 11:30am was the target time for completion, which is still way better than 2015. More...
