Eindhoven Announces First Bands For 2015 Festival

Samael, Necrophobic, and Gehennah (Sweden) are the first acts that have been confirmed for the seventh edition of the Eindhoven Metal Meeting festival, set to take place December 11th & 12th, 2015 at the Effenaar venue in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

A whopping 29 more bands will still be added to the line-up. The organizers of the festival comment also:

"As last year's edition was completely sold-out, a logical step would be to expand. However, we unanimously decided against this as we want to maintain the unique atmosphere of the festival. Therefore, de Effenaar will once again be the place to be for all death, black, thrash, pagan and doom metal fans at the end of this year!

"The Swiss metal band Samael will play the classic album 'Ceremony of Opposites' in its entirety at the exclusive fly-in festival-show. After that, the band will perform a few extra songs.

"Necrophobic, the highly praised blackened death metal band from Stockholm finally makes a return to Eindhoven for an exclusive BeNeLux show! Anders Strokirk - who handled the vocal duties on the band's all time classic album 'The Nocturnal Silence' - rejoined the band. Do not miss this!

"The Swedish black/thrash metal band Gehennah also make their comeback to The Netherlands after 15 years of absence. Expect classic hits like 'Headbangers Against Disco' and 'Kings Of The Sidewalk' aside new material. A very limited number of Early Bird tickets are now on sale through our official website."

Samael To Play Full "Ceremony Of Opposites" Album

Swiss band Samael will play the classic black metal album "Ceremony of Opposites" in its entirely at Wacken Open Air 2015. The following press release was also issued about the vent:

"Innovation is a key word when it comes to Swiss metal experimentalists Samael. What started out with pure and raw black metal ('Worship Him,' 1991 and 'Blood Ritual' in 1992) soon evolved into a whole different beast: with their landmark release 'Passage' (1996), Samael turned towards groove-laden dark metal, and afterwards they started incorporating electronic, oriental or world music parts on highly successful albums such as 'Solar Soul' (2007).

"After a brief romance with the brutal sound of their early days on 'Above' in 2009, the band returned to the essence and core of Samael with the 2011 album 'Lux Mundi,' an album which may be compared to 'Passage' when it comes to catchiness and songwriting skills, but this 'Light of the world' can draw from whole decades of experience and experiments! The result was a pitch black monster boasting epic melodies, cutting riffs and grooves second to none.

"The band is working on their next sonic adventure, but in 2015 the band will play some selected festivals, and in Wacken they will focus the main part of the performance on the 1994 masterpiece 'Ceremony Of Opposites.'" More...

Blastfest Announces Final Band Confirmations

The organizers of the Blastfest have checked in with the following announcement about final band confirmations:

"The lineup announcements had to come to an end eventually and Blastfest has now revealed the final three bands for the main lineup. But that’s not to say what you see on the burgeoning Blastfest poster is all that’s happening. No, no, no, there will be more!

"There’s already a lineup that would bring tears to the eyes of even the toughest metalhead with bands such as Demilich, Satyricon, Decapitated, Paradise Lost, At The Gates & Moonsorrow... and just last week a cruise up the Norwegian fjords with live bands was announced as part of the first days festivities. We still have to hear more… the clinics, the stand up comedy, the exhibitions, and lots more have yet to be revealed!

"For now, let’s leave this here… Sweden’s Uppsala upstarts, the black metal powerhouse, the entity of its own who released possibly their best work to date just last year with ‘The Hunt’, yes, the mighty Watain have been announced as another Blastfest 2015 headliner. The festival has also welcomed Austria’s sickest death metal export Schrinec Plays Pungent Stench and Bergens blackened deaththrash horde Grimfist." More...

Sunday Old School: Samael

Formed by brothers Vorph and Xy (originally going by the much longer titles Vorphalack and Xytraguptor) way back in 1987, Swiss act Samael is one of the longest running bands in the black metal scene, although there have been many times throughout the group’s career where the term “black metal” didn’t apply at all.

Despite the tension that would appear to occur with two family members writing, recording, and performing together constantly, Samael has been forging ahead without any signs of slowing down for more than 20 years. The band’s lineup is currently rounded out by bassist Mas, who has been involved with since the early ‘90s, and “newcomer” guitarist Makro, who joined in 2002. Makro also plays in the devastating death/doom outfit Sludge, which has previously been covered in our look at unknown side projects.

Samael has actually had one of the most stable lineups in a band with this sort of longevity, only splitting with three members in 26 years, with the core of the band remaining stable in all that time. Despite that lack of membership changes, the group has had a constant theme of evolution throughout its history, refining and even changing styles completely several times.

Besides the sound change as the band evolved from black metal towards an electronic/industrial vibe, the lyrics themselves have morphed significantly. The themes went from explicitly negative lyrics attacking religion in the early days (“I vomit on the holy bible” being one iconic line from the “Ceremony of Opposites” album) to more mystical leanings in the transitory middle era. The metamorphosis came full circle by the time of the 2004 album “Reign of Light” (reviewed here), where the band was still critical of religion, but the lyrics had become positive and uplifting instead. The follow-up “Solar Soul” (reviewed here) then shifted yet again, this time towards current events, politics, and warfare.

Samael’s first full-length “Worship Him” arrived in 1991, which witnessed the band’s most overt early black metal sound that is about as old school as it gets.
