Latest Sunn O))) News
Below is our complete Sunn O))) news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
Preparations continue to be made for the release of Sunn O)))'s upcoming LP, "Kannon," coming this December. The album will see its release via Southern Lord Recordings, and this week the album's cover art has been issued. Pre-orders for "Kannon" are also online now over at this location.
Consisting of three self-titled pieces of a triadic whole, the roots to Sunn O)))'s new album trace deeply into the sessions of the 2009-released "Monoliths & Dimensions" LP and very recent collaborative recordings with Ulver ("Terrestrials," 2014) and Scott Walker ("Soused," 2015), culminated and fully realized this year.
Recorded and mixed with Sunn O)))'s close colleague and co-producer Randall Dunn at Studio Litho, Aleph and Avast!, "Kannon" is as always composed around the immense guitar and bass interplay of founders Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, and includes performances by long term allies and collaborators Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi, Rex Ritter, Steve Moore and others.
Artist Angela Lafont Bolliger offers some insight on the creation of the sculpture for the album's cover artwork: "I was working on a visual concept inspired by Gian Lorenzo Berninis 'Ecstasy of Saint Teresa' (a life-sized Italian baroque sculpture in white marble) and had shared a short description about this project. I took a great interest in the conceptual thought behind the album.
"SUNN O)))'s compositions are minimal but intensely sculptural in depth and detail. This was my inspiration and it was important to me to transcend that idea into the sculpture I would create for the album artwork. Stephen and I both loved the idea that this sculpture could be something really ancient, like a comet - yet also indefinable and timeless. More...
It comes with immense pleasure for Southern Lord Recordings to announce the advent of a new studio album from Sunn O))), titled "Kannon," which will be officially released on December 4, 2015.
Composed in the aftershadow of Sunn O)))'s most recent successes in immersive collaboration -- the group having worked with Scott Walker on "Soused" and Ulver on "Terrestrials" in 2013 and 2014 -- and also from the broad and influential wake of "Monoliths & Dimensions," new album "Kannon" emerged both independently as a conceptual entity and with roots in the legacies of those projects. The album consists of three pieces of a triadic whole: "Kannon 1, 2 and 3." More...

Finally available to the public this week is "Terrestrials," the collaborative work created by the members of Sunn O))) and Ulver on an improvisational nocturnal whim.
As Southern Lord launches "Terrestrials" this week -- the album officially available to North American audiences tomorrow, Tuesday, February 4th -- you can hear the entire release at Pitchfork.com. The following press release was also issued:
"Following their 200th gig, playing before 2000 people at the Øya Festival in Oslo, Norway, August 10th, 2008, Sunn O))) ended up in Ulver's studio, Crystal Canyon, and over the course of the night they created three live pieces which faded out at dawn as the northern sunlight began creeping into the space.
"Featuring the shared efforts of Stephen O'Malley, Greg Anderson, Daniel O'Sullivan, Kristoffer Rygg, Jørn H. Sværen and Tore Ylwizaker, with ghost appearances by Ole-Henrik Moe and Kari Rønnekleiv (viola/violin), Stig Espen Hundsnes (trumpet) and Tomas Pettersen (drums), Terrestrials was produced by Stephen O'Malley and Kristoffer Rygg, mixed by Anders Møller at Crystal Canyon during February and March 2013, and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone, London.
"Art direction was handled by Stephen O'Malley, featuring a portrait of our sun, captured in the wavelength of hydrogen alpha light -- 656.3 nanometers in the deep red -- on June 10, 2012 by Alan Friedman." More...

"Terrestrials was produced by Stephen O'Malley & Kristoffer Rygg, mixed by Anders Møller at Crystal Canyon during February and March 2013, and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone, London in April. Art direction was handled by Stephen O'Malley. With words from the creators themselves, the story of how the impending collaborative "Terrestrials" LP from Sunn O))) and Ulver was conceptualized and created has been dispatched to the public, in addition to the first auditory indication of the material the album presents.
Oslo, Norway, August 10th, 2008: Following the band's 200th gig, Sunn O))) teamed up with Norwegian legends Ulver at their Oslo studio, Crystal Canyon. They recorded three "live in improvisation" pieces, starting that evening and ending at dawn, as Northern sunlight seeped in through the windows.
Kristoffer Rygg states: "We were sitting in the console room, early in the morning, listening to the takes. Someone said, 'ah, sunrise over Crystal Canyon,' as if the night had been a dark one. We all laughed and Greg proposed it as a title. In that setting it sounded perfect. The boys had mentioned wanting the music to orient towards the light, like some lost pilgrim stretching before the sun. We kept that mental picture for the processing." More...
Sunn O)))'s most recent studio album, 2009's "Monoliths and Dimensions," and Ulver's 2013 album, "Messe I.X-VI.X," found both outfits evolving and venturing into the world of acoustic arrangement and contemporary orchestration.
Besides arriving at this seeming parallel in vision, the pair's long standing camaraderie was initiated during Sunn O)))'s "White1" sessions in 2003 with the track "CutWOODED," which was produced by Ulver, in tribute to deceased film director Ed Wood.
At long last the two bands have come together for a more developed collaborative work. The result of this union is a three-track recording entitled "Terrestrials."
Southern Lord will release "Terrestrials" in February 2014. Further details will be announced over the next month.

Sunn O))) has issued the following announcement about canceling the band's upcoming shows in Australia and New Zealand:
"Sunn O))) regretfully must pull out of the proposed Australian dates this October, and cancel the New Zealand concerts. Japan dates this autumn are confirmed and will happen regardless of the above.
"We apologize to our great and loyal fans in Australia and New Zealand. We have had 2 amazing tours of Australia in the past and were looking forward to going back for a third. We have never had the chance to travel to New Zealand to date, and it pains us to cancel those concerts, but alas the travel is tied together and we can not afford to do NZ alone at this time.
"This is the first time in the history of the band where we have had to cancel a tour. Here is the explanation behind our decision. Our friends in the band Pelican are facing the same situation as outlined below.
"We want to say that the New Zealand promoter Gareth Craze / RW was a stand up guy and did his best to accommodate us on all levels.
"The Australian promoter Robert Macmanus/Heathenskulls has shown complete inconsideration towards the basic requirements of our agreement together; in regards to preproduction, planning and structure of business at a professionally unreliable level. SUNN O))) and our agent have done all we can to make this agreement work, including giving three extensions on the proposed deadlines over the last 4 months. We arrive at the point of a third (final) missed deadline where the choice becomes related to dignity and self-respect toward ourselves as artists.
"Simply: we cannot proceed in that manner. SUNN O))) is a difficult band to tour, and the way it does work is through accuracy in planning and the structure of the tour. The way things have proceeded with Robert Macmanus/Heathenskulls has eroded trust we need to have in order to fly across the planet. More...

Legendary doom pioneers WINTER, along with EARTH, SCORN, BEAVER, ALUK TODOLO, MENACE RUINE, HOODED MENACE, THE SECRET and Atilla Csihar’s VOID OV VOICES, have been confirmed for SUNN O)))’s curated event at Roadburn Festival 2011, set for April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.
As curator, SUNN O))) (Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley) are personally selecting the bands that will play during their special event, as well as performing a headlining show. SUNN O))) is Roadburn’s fourth curator, following David Tibet in 2008, Neurosis in
2009 and Triptykon’s Tom Gabriel Warrior at this year’s festival in April.
SUNN O))) comments: “SUNN O))) is honored to present the first part of our guests for the curated day at Roadburn, April 15th 2011. They represent a broad range of bands we are fans of, and in many cases some of our closest friends and collaborators. We hope you appreciate the selection, and look forward to announcing more of our selection and allies…”
Roadburn Festival has unveiled the curator for the 2011 edition of Roadburn as Sunn O))). The band, to be specific Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley, has agreed to curate the festival on Friday, April 15th, 2011 and host a special event.
As curator, Sunn O))) will personally select the bands that will play during their special event as well as perform a headline show. Sunn O))) will be Roadburn’s fourth curator, following David Tibet in 2008, Neurosis in 2009 and Triptykon’s Tom Gabriel Warrior at this year’s festival.
Right now, Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley are gearing up for two major Sunn O))) events in September: performing Altar with Boris at ATP New York and Brooklyn’s Masonic Temple, but you can expect to hear from them in the future with respect to their thoughts on the 2011 Roadburn festival and Sunn O)))’s performance.
The festival organizers comments in the release:
"We are overjoyed to join forces with Sunn O))) for the upcoming Roadburn festival. Their metal-based drone experimentations have proved groundbreaking and hugely influential for an entire new generation of musicians practicing the art of avant-garde metal, drone, post rock and psychedelica. Sunn O))) is also widely acclaimed for their eclectic collaborations with everyone from musicians Attila Csihar, Masami Akita (Merzbow), Boris, Steven Stapleton, Justin Broadrick, Oren Ambarchi, Ulver, Joe Preston, John Wiese, and Julian Cope to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and visual artist Banks Violette.
"Greg Anderson, who is also Goatsnake’s songsmith and the entrepreneur behind Southern Lord Records, and Stephen O’Malley, a prolific improviser and composer who is well-known for being involved in Burning Witch, KHANATE, KTL and DACM/Gisèle Vienne theatre-works, have performed in different guises during various Roadburn festivals over the years, which is exactly why we felt they would be the ideal curators. Both of them consistently push the envelope musically, and one of our steadfast goals has been to make Roadburn a festival that explores the cutting edge while celebrating the familiar, too. With that in mind, we could think of no better spiritual guide for 2011 than Sunn O))).
"We are truly looking forward to the new ideas and visions that the crossover drone duo will bring to the festival next year. When asked to sum up Roadburn in one word, 'progressive' would be a fitting choice. Evolving and improving are part of this. The festival is a tribute to the open mindedness of its bands, curators and audience. The joy comes from expanding musical horizons, and with Sunn O))) acting as our curator we’ll definitely be in for some artistic surprises."
Roadburn Festival 2011, including Sunn O)))’s special event, will run for three days from Thursday, April 14 to Saturday, April 16 at the 013 venue and Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland. There will be an additional afterburner event on Sunday, April 17, 2011.

On the 31 Dec 1999, no planes came crashing out of the sky, nuclear bombs went off or microwave ovens tried to eat anyone. However, times were about to change and in the metal scene change was already well underway. Let us take a stroll through the decade in metal that was.
Many of the 90s big names like Emperor and Pantera prepared to give their last venomous scream dying off in the wake of ever diminishing interest in the metal scene that had plagued the 90s. In the year 2000 a band named “Limp Bizkit” came out with an album called "Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavoured Water" and in a storm nu-metal took over the public perception of heavy music, changing the face of metal irreparably. Although nu-metal had already been pioneered by Korn, bands like Deftones, Disturbed, Mudvayne and Linkin Park all had breakout releases in 2000. More...
