German power metal favourites Blind Guardian has announced that they have teamed up with author Markus Heitz, known for his "The Dwarves" books, to create the concept for the band's next album. A mesage from frontman Hansi Kürsch reads as follows:
"Busy seasons are usually harbingers of great things to come. Festivals, regular studio work and, above all, the orchestral album are making this a very exciting summer for us. Let's keep the focus on the orchestral album one more time. We have spectacular news!
"Every orchestral project needs a concept and such a concept demands a great story. To get a story that fits together perfectly with our majestic music, we are joining forces with Germany's best fantasy author Markus Heitz; check out his Die Zwerge (The Dwarves) series. Markus is one of my favorite writers of 'high fantasy.' I have been really amazed by several of his books over the last years but was finally and completely convinced about him being the perfect choice for our project by Gerechter Zorn (Righteous Wrath) — the first part of his newest trilogy, Die Legenden der Albae (Legends Of The Albae). The way he weaves in different aspects to his splendid universe immediately told me that the quest for the one to come up with the right story for our music was over. Although the final completion of this quite unusual cooperation most probably will keep us busy until 2013, things nonetheless become clearer the more we exchange ideas. The creation of a great new storyboard and the involvement of such a suitable concept are the perfect frame for this soundtrack/musical-like anthems we have come up with over the years. It is absolutely great that Markus is willing to follow us on such an ambitious voyage. More...
Hansi Kürsch, the frontman of German power metal outfit Blind Guardian has posted a message online discussing the band's recent tour. He also discusses the future of his side project, Demonds & Wizards. His message reads as follows:
"Another year, another message. Here, as promised a little while ago, the ultimate report about what we were dealing with the past few months and what to expect for the upcoming year. I assume everyone reading these lines has had a chance to discover At the Edge of Time and hopefully still enjoys it as much as we do. The very positive feedback we have gotten worldwide is of course a strong motivation for us. As said at other places before, we consider this album as the perfect connection between new and old. It contains a little bit of everything but still has a strong musical thread running throughout and offers us many options for our next projects.
"It is no surprise when I tell you that the next journey will certainly lead us into an even more classical direction. There will be a few more trips to Prague necessary to finalize all orchestral recordings for our classical project but all things must come to an end eventually. The result of the stuff we have already recorded keeps me in a very good and optimistic mood, even though I consider the wait until the project’s completion very painful. Charlie (Bauerfeind) and I nonetheless will start working on the first vocal recordings during the next days. Since we will be interrupted by quite a lot of upcoming shows I would be happy if I were to find myself in a position to finish the first five songs vocalwise before the year is over. It is challenging stuff for everyone. One fine day, all of a sudden, when no one expects it, I will announce its completion. Certainly not within the next twelve months, but one very, very fine day.
From one long-term project to another. As we had time to share some serious moments with each other during the 70000 Tons of Metal cruise (somewhere on the oceans of time) Jon (Schaffer; Iced Earth) and I had finally found the chance to put our minds together for a possible next Demons & Wizards album. We cheerfully simultaneously announced our wish to start working on it as quickly as possible. Although time is an issue for both of us we nonetheless decided to start songwriting together during the European summer festival season when Jon will be in Europe for Iced Earth performances. During that season we will use every possible moment to complete as much material as possible. To guarantee a good-mood-songwriting feeling I have already saved some good bottles of red wine and a smaller amount of Johnny Walker black label in our studio. Things are still in the mist but we are about to recognize structures of a busy future. More...

After I bought my ticket to the Sacred Worlds and Songs Divine Tour I realized I had never seen Blind Guardian play live, which in turn sparked some questions: would I have to recite Gimli’s entire family tree to get my ticket from will call? Would the audience be acting out the grand tales Blind Guardian spins in real-time? Would I need a suit of armor? A battle axe? Should I ride my war horse or would my lighter travelling mare be better suited to the evening? Fortunately all my questions would be answered by the great bards…
I arrived just as opening act Seven Kingdoms was getting rolling. Hailing from Orlando, Florida these power and speed metal troubadours have the chops and desire to be quite good, even though silky vocalist Sabrina V could use a couple semesters in the Angela Gossow School of Stage Presence for Women. The songs ranged from overwrought to outstanding; set closer “Seven Kingdoms” was the standout as the eponymous tune was Maiden-meets-Yngwie-meets-Doro fun, and Seven Kingdoms was warmly appreciated by the already full house. When going through the Sunday Old School archives, it struck me as rather strange that while over sixty bands have been covered thus far, there has yet to be an article on a true power metal band. So today I make amends for that as we take a look at one of the most loved bands in the genre, Germany’s Blind Guardian. The band formed in 1984 under the original moniker, Lucifer’s Heritage in the town of Krefeld by singing bassist Hansi Kürsch and guitarist Andre Olbrich.
After going numerous lineup changes, the band signed a deal with No Remorse Records and decided to change their name to avoid accusations of Satanism and to stop them being lumped in with the emerging black metal bands at the time such as Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost. Through No Remorse, the band released their debut album, “Battalions Of Fear” in 1988, which was predominantly a speed metal album in which the influence of countrymen Helloween shined through. The album was well received and a sophomore full length, “Follow The Blind” was released the next year, which featured a guest performance from Helloween founder Kai Hansen. More...
