Blind Guardian Announces 15 Disc Box Set

Blind Guardian has posted the following message about releasing the massive "A Traveler's Guide to Space and Time" box set:

"Save up your Christmas money for February when A Traveler’s Guide to Space and Time, a strictly limited edition Blind Guardian box set with 15 CDs in 13 high quality digipacks and only 8000 copies worldwide, is released. Germany, Austria and Switzerland have a release date of February 1, 2013 and the rest of the world on February 4, 2013. The box set can now be pre-ordered from your favorite record shop!

"Looking back over Blind Guardian’s career from the here and now in 2013, you see a success story gone global, the likes of which very few other German metal bands have ever experienced. This band from Krefeld has been just about everywhere, conquering the North American market in the same way as they stormed the charts in Asia or packed concert venues in South America and even South Africa. From their (at that point purely) German beginnings with debut album Battalions of Fear (1988), followed by their first international recognition with the second album Follow the Blind (1989) and the euphoria which went round the world when Tales from the Twilight World (1990) and Somewhere Far Beyond (1992) came out, right through to their masterpiece of composition in A Night at the Opera (2002), the name of the band developed to become an unmistakable world brand. There are lots of reasons for this, but no doubt much of it is down to the extraordinary skill of everyone involved, their virtuoso dexterity and that gift for bringing mystical themes in tune with unusually complex metal directives. Something else which really makes Blind Guardian stand out is the way they have always kept so close to their fans.

"Even more proof of their unconditional commitment to the huge fan-base is being released now; A Traveler’s Guide to Space and Time, a strictly limited edition deluxe box set with a total of 15 CDs in 13 high quality digipacks, which the musicians and the record company have been working on together for almost a year. A particularly long time to create a compilation you may think, but a glance at just how much this box set encompasses explains why their conscientious and time-consuming preparation took so long. Blind Guardian Comments On Metal Open Air

After Saxon announced the band was pulling out of the Metal Open Air festival, now Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian has also issued the following statement about canceling an appearance at the fest:

"Dear friends,

"In 25 years of our career we have managed to fix all problems to make sure our performance is going to take place. No matter what the circumstances were, we intended to play. We have been extremely successful in the avoidance of canceled shows, so far.

"This unfortunately comes to a very sad end here in Sao Luis. Due to massive technical and administrative problems we were forced to cancel tonight´s show. As far as we understand it seems to be the local management who has not been able to secure a proper festival environment, anymore. Things are pretty out of hand there.

"We feel very sorry about this totally unsatisfying situation, but the mistakes made by the local promoter makes an even improvised show impossible. I know, that we have the most dedicated fans and I count on your understanding. In the future we will be more careful in confirming such festivals."

Blind Guardian Posts Orchestral Preview

Blind Guardian has posted a preview online of the orchestral version of "The Bard’s Song – In the Forest," which will appear on the upcoming "Memories of a Time to Come" release, due out January 20th, 2012. The band also commented:

"‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the Twilight Hall Santa Guardian and his band of dark elves put the finishing touches on a gift for all the bad boys and girls in Blind Guardian land. Santa Guardian thought it was unfair that 'The Bard’s Song – The Hobbit' was re-recorded for Memories of a Time to Come but “The Bard’s Song – In the Forest” didn’t get any special treatment.

"Using his own special brand of persuasion, Santa Guardian 'convinced' the band to make an orchestral version of 'The Bard’s Song – In the Forest' for inclusion on Memories of a Time to Come. Santa’s gift to every Blind Guardian fan is a 95 second preview of this song.

"The whole Blind Guardian family wishes you and yours a very happy holiday season. See you in 2012!"

Blind Guardian Announces New Compilation Details

Blind Guardian announced details of an upcoming compilation release entitled "Memories of a Time to Come." The three disc album contains remixed, re-worked and re-recorded classics from the band's 25 year existence and is scheduled for release on January 20, 2012 through Virgin/EMI Records.

The official announcement reads:

"Finally, after all these years, we have found the time to gather our most worthy songs into a best of compilation, representative of our career’s first 25 years. From the very beginning it was important for us to undertake this project only if we could put the necessary time and attention to detail into it. With overwhelming nostalgia we have looked back on 25 years and came up with 'Memories of a Time to Come', an organic mixture of some of our greatest songs.

"With the exception of 'Sacred Worlds', all songs on 'Memories of a Time to Come' have been remixed while 'The Bard’s Song – The Hobbit', 'Valhalla' as well as 'And Then There Was Silence' have been re-recorded. This album contains some very pleasant surprises for the die-hard Blind Guardian fan and delivers a perfect image of our musical spirit to those who are not, or just loosely, familiar with the band. 'Memories of a Time to Come' precisely defines our progression and the long-standing dedication to our music. We are proud to present an album that will take the listener on a musical voyage. This year’s Christmas will be in January!

" 'Memories of a Time to Come', the ultimate collection of Blind Guardian music from 1987 to 2011, will be released on January 20, 2012 via Virgin/EMI. It will be available as a double CD, 3 CD deluxe limited edition including the legendary Lucifer’s Heritage demos and as download."

Blind Guardian Teams Up With Fantasy Author

German power metal favourites Blind Guardian has announced that they have teamed up with author Markus Heitz, known for his "The Dwarves" books, to create the concept for the band's next album. A mesage from frontman Hansi Kürsch reads as follows:

"Busy seasons are usually harbingers of great things to come. Festivals, regular studio work and, above all, the orchestral album are making this a very exciting summer for us. Let's keep the focus on the orchestral album one more time. We have spectacular news!

"Every orchestral project needs a concept and such a concept demands a great story. To get a story that fits together perfectly with our majestic music, we are joining forces with Germany's best fantasy author Markus Heitz; check out his Die Zwerge (The Dwarves) series. Markus is one of my favorite writers of 'high fantasy.' I have been really amazed by several of his books over the last years but was finally and completely convinced about him being the perfect choice for our project by Gerechter Zorn (Righteous Wrath) — the first part of his newest trilogy, Die Legenden der Albae (Legends Of The Albae). The way he weaves in different aspects to his splendid universe immediately told me that the quest for the one to come up with the right story for our music was over. Although the final completion of this quite unusual cooperation most probably will keep us busy until 2013, things nonetheless become clearer the more we exchange ideas. The creation of a great new storyboard and the involvement of such a suitable concept are the perfect frame for this soundtrack/musical-like anthems we have come up with over the years. It is absolutely great that Markus is willing to follow us on such an ambitious voyage. More...

Blind Guardian Frontman Posts Tour Recap

Hansi Kürsch, the frontman of German power metal outfit Blind Guardian has posted a message online discussing the band's recent tour. He also discusses the future of his side project, Demonds & Wizards. His message reads as follows:

"Another year, another message. Here, as promised a little while ago, the ultimate report about what we were dealing with the past few months and what to expect for the upcoming year. I assume everyone reading these lines has had a chance to discover At the Edge of Time and hopefully still enjoys it as much as we do. The very positive feedback we have gotten worldwide is of course a strong motivation for us. As said at other places before, we consider this album as the perfect connection between new and old. It contains a little bit of everything but still has a strong musical thread running throughout and offers us many options for our next projects.

"It is no surprise when I tell you that the next journey will certainly lead us into an even more classical direction. There will be a few more trips to Prague necessary to finalize all orchestral recordings for our classical project but all things must come to an end eventually. The result of the stuff we have already recorded keeps me in a very good and optimistic mood, even though I consider the wait until the project’s completion very painful. Charlie (Bauerfeind) and I nonetheless will start working on the first vocal recordings during the next days. Since we will be interrupted by quite a lot of upcoming shows I would be happy if I were to find myself in a position to finish the first five songs vocalwise before the year is over. It is challenging stuff for everyone. One fine day, all of a sudden, when no one expects it, I will announce its completion. Certainly not within the next twelve months, but one very, very fine day.
From one long-term project to another. As we had time to share some serious moments with each other during the 70000 Tons of Metal cruise (somewhere on the oceans of time) Jon (Schaffer; Iced Earth) and I had finally found the chance to put our minds together for a possible next Demons & Wizards album. We cheerfully simultaneously announced our wish to start working on it as quickly as possible. Although time is an issue for both of us we nonetheless decided to start songwriting together during the European summer festival season when Jon will be in Europe for Iced Earth performances. During that season we will use every possible moment to complete as much material as possible. To guarantee a good-mood-songwriting feeling I have already saved some good bottles of red wine and a smaller amount of Johnny Walker black label in our studio. Things are still in the mist but we are about to recognize structures of a busy future. More...
