"Just got off the phone with MJR, & have a brief update to share. Things are moving right along with the new cd! The music is all finished, and Jason arrived in New Jersey this week; they're starting drum tracks today. Mike has promised to get photos of the recording sessions, so we should have the first of those to share next week; stay tuned."

The official Symphony X MySpace page has been updated with the following information about the band's upcoming album:
"Spoke to Mike today, and he sounded really happy about the progress that the band's making on the new cd. ‘Technically, we could be done’ he said. ‘I put together some pre-production mixes for us to listen to, and it's all solid. We have over an hour of really good stuff that we really dig; there's more than enough stuff there that we can choose the best songs to go on the CD, but all of the songs are really strong. And there are two almost-done songs that we're going to try to wrap up in the next few days as well, one is shaping up to be 10 minutes plus; it's really cool stuff that we gotta use.’ He and Russell have started working through lyrics, and the band plans to start tracking in early March. ‘I think everyone will like it’ he said, ‘it has a little bit of everything.’"
New Jersey progressive metal band Symphony X has issued the following update:
"Just got off the phone with Michael Romeo; he wishes everyone a Happy New Year and reports that the writing of the new cd is progressing well. He says that the riffs are written and all the ideas are there, they're just trying different arrangement ideas right now. We talked about how we're back to the usual routine of trying to find new ways to say the same old 'the band is writing the cd', and he said 'It's hard to say. Every day is different, we're just doing our thing & trying to make the tunes cool. You put something together one day and then come back the next day & listen to it; sometimes it's cool, & sometimes it sucks & you have to change things around.' They're still hoping to be done with the cd by spring."
Nuclear Blast has issued the following announcement about signing a record deal with Symphony X:
“As lifelong fans of the band, it is with great pride that Nuclear Blast announces the signing of US Metal / Prog Gods Symphony X!!! Symphony X exemplifies the technical sophistication of progressive metal while transcending the genre by writing amazing songs with masterful musicality and great hooks! This New Jersey-based super group effortlessly creates a balancing act between solid, accessible arrangements and song structures with highly technical, challenging instrumental work and unbelievable melodic vocal harmonies!
"This embrace of polyphonic lead vocals, combined with their classical-sometimes even Queen-like- choruses create a powerful, in-your-face mixture. With elements of thundering metal, rock, solos with unstoppable guitar shredding and intense keyboards - this potent group has grown with every release and is poised to compete with the commercial success of top groups in all genres! Bazillion Points Publishing has announced the first definitive book on the elusive world of progressive metal, written by esteemed metal crusader and prog manic and THE END RECORDS staff member Jeff Wagner. Scheduled for release in Autumn 2009, the book will detail the common movements of pioneers like OPETH, WATCHTOWER, VOIVOD, ATHEIST, DREAM THEATER, PSYCHOTIC WALTZ, CELTIC FROST, SIGH, and FATES WARNING — metal bands who have gone against the tide of tradition and conservatism. Linked by a desire to push heavy metal forward, these varied bands with a couple hundred other black sheep form the hard-to-pin-down category of "progressive metal."
Beginning with the hugely influential mid-1970s efforts of Canadian band RUSH, Wagner's book explores the shared lineage of prog rock and metal. He unfurls the huge tapestry and examines the sounds and styles created during the genre's 40-year history, including: the "Big Three" — QUEENSRŸCHE, FATES WARNING, and DREAM THEATER; extreme prog pioneers VOIVOD and CELTIC FROST; Norway's post-black metal avant garde (ULVER, ARCTURUS, VED BUENS ENDE, BEYOND DAWN, etc.); and of course the huge global movement of Big Three-worshippers in the 1990s and the leaders that emerged (AYREON, SYMPHONY X, etc.). The vastness of what can be considered "progressive metal" has proven to be one of the most viable, malleable forms in all of modern music. More...

"We just finished our last show w/ Symphony X and Epica and all we can say is that the tour was killer! Everyone from the bands to the crew were super cool. It truly was one of our best touring experiences we've had. We can't express enough gratitude to the Symphony X guys for taking us out and allowing us to play to such a diverse and progressive crowd. We also were amazed to the extent of fans that came out as a result of our exposure with last years Gigantour and the amazing tour we had with Dream Theater." More...

Canadian progressive metallers, Into Eternity, issues the following update:
"The band has been rehearsing at our sub-freezing jam spot for 2 weeks solid. We have no heat in the place, so we're trying to rip scales with fingers that won't move. If we can play these songs, in these temperatures, then we should just fine on a heated stage! There are some Canadian and USA headlining shows coming up, so we want to be prepared. Also, we are throwing in a few old songs that have never been done before. One of the songs we haven't played since 2001. Hopefully that will make our long time fans happy on this tour. I think we will also be testing 3 new tracks from our new unreleased album. We get to hang out with Sacrifice at the Winnipeg Metal Festival, so that is going to be a highlight of the year for me. Sacrifice was one of the first thrash shows that I ever went to as a 14 year old kid and that's what inspired me to play metal." More...

The second coming of Megadeth's acclaimed traveling metal festival Gigantour arrives on both DVD and CD April 22 via Image Entertainment. Conceived in 2005 by Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, Gigantour resurrects metal's focus on stellar musicianship.
The Gigantour DVD and CD follow Image Entertainment's fall 2006 release of the debut Gigantour CD and DVD, which featured performances by Megadeth, Dream Theater, Fear Factory, Anthrax (CD only), Nevermore, Life of Agony, Symphony X, Dry Kill Logic and Bobaflex.
Gigantour 2 features over an hour of performances by iconic and influential heavy metal pioneers Megadeth, along with Lamb of God, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Overkill, The Smashup, and Into Eternity. Recorded in DTS 5.1 surround sound, the DVD version also features a behind the scenes look at the 2006 tour, while both the DVD and CD offer a hidden bonus track--Megadeth's "Peace Sells."
The release of the Gigantour 2 DVD and CD coincides with this year's Earth Day--perfect, really, since MUSTAINE has said, with a laugh, about Gigantour's mission of emphasizing true musicianship and virtuosity: " I think that in a small way, we are cleaning up the environment of crappy bands."
Meanwhile, in February Megadeth heads to Europe--where recently announced new guitarist Chris Broderick (Nevermore, Jag Panzer) will make his debut with the band alongside Mustaine, drummer Shawn Drover, and bassist James Lomenzo, before returning for this year's Gigantour.
The 29-date North American trek kicks off April 12 at The Fillmore in Denver and criss-crosses the U.S. and Canada until its May 22 finale at the Mesa Amphitheatre in Phoenix . Joining Megadeth on this year's tour are Scandinavian death metal band In Flames, Finland's Children of Bodom, Arizona's modern extreme Job for a Cowboy, and Oakland, CA heavy power trio High on Fire.

SYMPHONY X's online administrator has checked in with the following update:
"I spoke to (guitarist) MJR yesterday, and he actually asked me about the poll before I had a chance to tell him about it; he was very interested to hear what the results were. He was on his way out the door to meet up with some of the other guys, and took a few minutes to write down the top fives so that they could discuss them; just like the last poll, he was surprised by some of the songs you all asked to hear. You'll be happy to hear that he said that they will definitely be using some of the songs that ya'll asked for. He also asked me to pass on the band's thanks to all of you for participating, so thank you from the band!
One more thing: Fan club members, stay tuned for an e-mail regarding the new membership structure, renewals, and the next fan club CD (which is going to be AWESOME)!"

Extreme progressive metal leaders INTO ETERNITY have issued the following update:
"It's a new year now and we are almost done all the music in demo form for our new album. Stu (Block, Vocals) has actually come over to my house and belted out his first vocal for a new track. We are demoing on my computer, so my living room is now a studio. ?
The new songs are sounding really good and really heavy! We are hoping to get into the studio in mid Feb. I also am putting up some more live show dates, so check them out. We'll be back on the road soon!" More...
The SYMPHONY X camp has issued the following update:
"There have been rumblings here and there about the band's tour setlist and how it needs some changes. We did a setlist poll a few years ago, and I spoke with MJR about it recently and he agreed that it was time to do another one. So here's your chance to let the band know what you want to see them play on tour!
Here's how it goes. You reply here (leave your comment here in the blog...comments left on the band's main page won't be counted) and tell me what songs you would like to hear the band play on their upcoming tours. Give me 90 minutes worth of material (no, the band is not necessarily playing a 90 minute set, that's just a random number I'm choosing). You can pick particular songs, or just say that you'd like to hear anything from a certain CD, or a mix of both. I'll leave this open until midnight (US Pacific time) on Sunday night (January 20th). On Monday, I'll compile the results and send them to the band, and post them for you guys as well.
The last time we did this, MJR was surprised at some of the songs you all wanted to see them perform live and took the suggestions under consideration. He says they'll do so as well this time, so make sure you let them know what you want to hear.
Looking forward to seeing what you all have to say!"
Symphony X's tour schedule is below. Fans should be aware that although EPICA is due to open up for the band in London, UK on March 6th and support the band on their North American tour, it is unclear at this time if Epica will in fact be able to do so, as vocalist Simone Simons was recently diagnosed with MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). The band was forced to cancel the rest of their shows for this month as of January 16th.
