Symphony X vocalist Russell Allen has announced that the band has set "Iconoclast" as the title of its forthcoming eighth studio album. "Iconoclast" is set for release sometime later this year through the band's new label home Nuclear Blast Records.
Russell Allen commented on the album's progression by saying:
"We are in post-production, so the album is pretty much almost done. At this point, mixes are being wrapped up and finalized and it's off to mastering and should be ready for release in a few months — definitely first quarter of 2011. We've got the artwork all done, we're taking pictures next week... all that good stuff. So everything's on track for release pretty soon."
Former Dream Theater and Avenged Sevenfold drummer Mike Portnoy has announced through his official Twitter page that he is currently working on a new side-project with Symphony X vocalist Russell Allen. Mike Portnoy commented on the new project by saying:
"VERY excited about a new project I'm working on [with] one my [favorite] singers in the world: my bro, Sir Russell Allen. Wait 'till you hear this shit!!!"

The group's debut album is currently planned for release later in the year.

Blackguard has issued the following update regarding their upcoming album:
“This is going to be our most dynamic release to date. We’re going to have a few slower songs on this album; more head banging tunes. We’re also going to be introducing some new elements to our song to mix things up a bit. Not to sound too cliché but we definitely don’t want to write the same record over and over again and this record is going to be a great step forward for us.”
The band also comments on their upcoming tour dates with Symphony X, "It is a dream tour. Our band has spent the better part of the last 2 years on tour to get to this point. We very much look forward to seeing old friends, making new friends and being a part of what will be the supreme springtime event. We want to thank everyone involved for giving us this opportunity and we will not disappoint."
Swedish/Danish act Amaranthe is set to support Symphony X on March 26th in Tunis, Tunisia, at the 8eme Festival Méditerranéen de la Guitare. Guitarist Olof Morck commented on the show:
"Naturally it is a great honour for us to make our first show for our friends in Africa, and even before our debut album is out at that! Tunisia seems to have a great metal following, and Amaranthe will be proud to appear with Symphony X to conquer the ancient grounds of mighty Carthage! See you all there, crazy Tunisians!"

The official Symphony X MySpace page has been updated with the following statement about the band's activity:
"My apologies for the uber-delay in getting an update posted; we've had to coordinate MJR and me, band management, and multiple people at both the US label office AND the Euro label office spanning quite a few time zones in all. Hopefully it'll go more smoothly from here on out as we all adjust to working together, but for now, here's your very belated update!
"Just spoke with MJR and here's the latest scoop! Mike said that the drums and most of the rhythm guitars are all recorded. At the moment, they are fine tuning the lyrics and melodies, during which time Russ will also be recording his vocals. Personally, I get more excited about this CD the more Mike tells me about it; I am quite secure in saying that it will be well worth the wait.
"While the band is busy working on the cd, we'd like to keep you busy as well; the band needs your help, in two areas. Firstly: the existing FAQ on the band's website was put together when 'The Odyssey' came out; obviously that was quite a while ago and lots has changed since then, including some significant gear/endorsement changes as well as a label change. So that's where you come in: help us put together a new FAQ for the new website. What do you want to ask the band? PLEASE do not send in questions like 'when are you going to play [insert location]?' or 'when will you make a dvd?'; best to stick to general information questions if you want the band to answer them. Send in your questions to email@example.com with "FAQ" in the subject line, and they'll be sent to the band; who knows, your question may show up in the FAQ on the band's new site! For those who have been wondering, we're anticipating that the new site will launch around the same time as the new CD. More...

The official Symphony X MySpace page has been updated with the following information about the band's upcoming album:
"Spoke to Mike today, and he sounded really happy about the progress that the band's making on the new cd. ‘Technically, we could be done’ he said. ‘I put together some pre-production mixes for us to listen to, and it's all solid. We have over an hour of really good stuff that we really dig; there's more than enough stuff there that we can choose the best songs to go on the CD, but all of the songs are really strong. And there are two almost-done songs that we're going to try to wrap up in the next few days as well, one is shaping up to be 10 minutes plus; it's really cool stuff that we gotta use.’ He and Russell have started working through lyrics, and the band plans to start tracking in early March. ‘I think everyone will like it’ he said, ‘it has a little bit of everything.’"
New Jersey progressive metal band Symphony X has issued the following update:
"Just got off the phone with Michael Romeo; he wishes everyone a Happy New Year and reports that the writing of the new cd is progressing well. He says that the riffs are written and all the ideas are there, they're just trying different arrangement ideas right now. We talked about how we're back to the usual routine of trying to find new ways to say the same old 'the band is writing the cd', and he said 'It's hard to say. Every day is different, we're just doing our thing & trying to make the tunes cool. You put something together one day and then come back the next day & listen to it; sometimes it's cool, & sometimes it sucks & you have to change things around.' They're still hoping to be done with the cd by spring."

Bazillion Points Publishing has announced the first definitive book on the elusive world of progressive metal, written by esteemed metal crusader and prog manic and THE END RECORDS staff member Jeff Wagner. Scheduled for release in Autumn 2009, the book will detail the common movements of pioneers like OPETH, WATCHTOWER, VOIVOD, ATHEIST, DREAM THEATER, PSYCHOTIC WALTZ, CELTIC FROST, SIGH, and FATES WARNING — metal bands who have gone against the tide of tradition and conservatism. Linked by a desire to push heavy metal forward, these varied bands with a couple hundred other black sheep form the hard-to-pin-down category of "progressive metal."
Beginning with the hugely influential mid-1970s efforts of Canadian band RUSH, Wagner's book explores the shared lineage of prog rock and metal. He unfurls the huge tapestry and examines the sounds and styles created during the genre's 40-year history, including: the "Big Three" — QUEENSRŸCHE, FATES WARNING, and DREAM THEATER; extreme prog pioneers VOIVOD and CELTIC FROST; Norway's post-black metal avant garde (ULVER, ARCTURUS, VED BUENS ENDE, BEYOND DAWN, etc.); and of course the huge global movement of Big Three-worshippers in the 1990s and the leaders that emerged (AYREON, SYMPHONY X, etc.). The vastness of what can be considered "progressive metal" has proven to be one of the most viable, malleable forms in all of modern music. More...
