As a kid, Fieldy spent much of his adolescence "standing around in dirt fields, drinking beer, watching other kids fight." At some point, Fieldy and some friends decided their time would be better spent taking out their frustrations on musical instruments instead. And rock music would never be the same.
So Fieldy, James "Munky" Shaffer, David Silveria, Brian "Head" Wetch, and eventually, an assistant coroner with a troubled past named Jonathan Davis left Bakersfield for Los Angeles and collectively became known as Korn. It helped that they all had common influneces - the angry, urban stylings of hip-hip, the heavy, riff-driven angst of metal. But the sounds emanating from this band's Huntington Beach rehearsal space would soon set an entirely fresh musical precedent and set off a wave of imitators that eventually threatened to engulf the band itself.
After touring for nearly two years, Korn was signed by Immortal and released their now-classic eponymous 1994 debut. Korn opened with the prophetic, gravel-throated challenge "Are you ready?!" before kicking into the heaviest guitar sound yet heard in rock, thanks to the team of Shaffer and Welch, who tuned their already-low 7-string guitars even lower and played with no regard for the traditional harmonic consonance. The sound was metallica sludge, but tempered oddly by bassist Fieldy and drummer Silveria, who added a mix of porn-soundtrack funk and hip-hop rhythms tha was puzzlingly aggressive and chill. Next, nursery rhyme-like melodies were woven into the dark mix, helping make Korn the creepiest, heaviest debut since Black Sabbath. But Davis had no desire to sing about devils and witches; he was busy exorcising real-life demons. Songs such as "Faget" and "Shoots and Ladders" were discomfortingly personal confessions of shattered childhood, and by album's end Davis was literally in tears in the harrowing "Daddy."
And so they began to amass a following that would send their next album, 1996's brutal yet cheekily titled "Life is Peachy," into platinum sales. Years of touring followed again as the band fortified its fan-base to the degree that their next album, 1998's "Follow the Leader," would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard's Top 200, as would "Issues."

KORN frontman Jonathan Davis has posted the following message on his ButtSexCrips.com web site:
"Well, today was the last day of rehearsal. We leave in four days to start the Euro tour. We sound better than ever and we are very excited to get out and play again. We have got 18 songs mixed and ready [for the new album], so two more to go. The shit is BANGIN'! Terry [Date, mixer] and I will probably be up all Thursday night fixing all the mixes so it will be totally done on Friday.
"On Wednesday, me and Munky [guitar] have a photo shoot for the inside artwork, and Fieldy [bass] and David [drums] are doin' theirs on Thursday. Shit is starting to happen fast, so get ready 'cause HERE WE COME BIATCHES."
KORN are currently mixing their new album with producer Terry Date (DEFTONES, PANTERA, SOULFLY) for a tentative September release. Matrix (AVRIL LAVIGNE, THE MOONEY SUZUKI) and Atticus Ross (BAD RELIGION, PINK) were responsible for most of the production duties on the follow-up to 2003's "Take a Look in the Mirror", with only one track from the band's sessions with Dallas Austin slated to appear on the effort. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Liar", "Politix", "Last Legal Drug", "Le Petit Mort", "It's Me Again", "Coming Undone", "I've Seen It All" and "Souvenir of Sadness".
KORN's last release, "Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" (Immortal/Epic), featuring highlights from the first 10 years of the band's recording career, has sold 936,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
As previously reported, KORN are close to inking a new record deal with EMI/Virgin, according to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS. The proposed deal is said to be for two albums and a one-third interest in the band's publishing, merchandising and ticket sales as part of a new contractual model, a la Robbie Williams. The fine points are being hammered out by attorney Gary Stiffelman and manager Jeff Kwatinetz on the band's side of the table, and by EMI North America head David Munns in tandem with Virgin topper Matt Serletic.
Hungarian moshcore band Ektomorf is confirmed as support for Korn at Ljubljana, Slovenia on Sept 6.
Nothing is confirmed yet, but it is rumored that Korn are on the verge of signing a new deal with EMI/Virgin. Their first release will be a new album in October, currently being mixed by Terry Date.
Billboard magazine is reporting that H.I.M. and MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE are among the bands that have been confirmed for the first U.S. edition of the U.K.'s Download Festival, set for Oct. 8 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. Headlining the festival will be THE KILLERS, with MODEST MOUSE, the ARCADE FIRE and DOVES also on the bill.
Like the U.K. version of the event, which drew 150,000 people this year to London's Donnington Park, the U.S. edition will offer cutting-edge technology and media experiences.
Last year's festival, with LINKIN PARK, METALLICA, KORN, SUM 41 and IGGY POP on the bill, grossed $7.3 million, the 10th highest gross of the year, according to Billboard Boxscore.
As exclusively reported here first, KORN's replacement axeman for their upcoming Fall tour will be ex-OTEP guitarist Rob Patterson. However, KORN frontman Jonathan Davis revealed that Patterson will not be taking to the stage while the band performs. A statement from his personal site reads as follows:
"We hired Rob Patterson to play guitar for the European dates but he will not be on stage. We don't want to use samples or tape, 'cause that would suck. We are not ready to have a new guy on stage with us. This is for the first Europe run only. We have some new exciting ideas on how we are gonna play live in the future and I am sure it will blow your mind."
Former OTEP guitarist Rob Patterson, who was fired from the group in December 2003, will be acting as fill-in axeman for KORN when they hit the road later this year. Patterson, who has also acted as touring guitarist for VANILLA ICE in years past, will be filling in for the recently departed Brian "Head" Welch, who officially left KORN earlier this year to pursue the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Guitar World magazine recently conducted an in-depth interview with former KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Guitar World: What triggered your decision to quit KORN?
Brian "Head" Welch: "When I started playing in KORN, I began drifting downward spiritually. I became addicted to drugs like methamphetamine. I became rich and famous, although I never thought of myself as a rock star or as being bigger and better than anyone. I loved music, but I found myself at the point where I wanted to die. I didn't care about life.
"I think I hit the bottom when my wife left me while I was on the road. She started partying, bailed out with some dudes, and took my money and left me with our daughter. Then I had to take my daughter on the road with me. The band agreed to pay my daughter a dollar every time someone cussed in front of her. Before I knew it, my daughter was making, like, $100 a day, and I told people to try to chill in front of her. She was getting excited about making all this money, and it wasn't working. I had to put my kid before my career and all the money I was making. I decided to do the right thing. I was dying inside. If I didn't have my daughter, I would be dead right now, for sure. More...
Opeth and Jens Bogren have now finished the recording and mixing of the latest opus "Ghost reveries" (view cover). The album will be mastered today (June 16th) at the Cutting room facilities in Stockholm. Total running time will be around 65 minutes. Full tracklisting is:

A release date has yet to be confirmed, but it's planned for late August/early September worldwide through Roadrunner records.
In other news, Opeth have confirmed that they will appear at the Metal Hammer festival/Spodek arena in Katowice/Poland on August 31. Oddly enough supporting Korn. Other bands on the bill includes Lacuna Coil and Fear Factory.
A video of former KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch's performing a tribute song to the late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, entitled "Letter to Dimebag", has been posted online at the Valley Bible Fellowship web site. You can watch it at this location (Quicktime). "It is written in guitar language, and I did it because [Dimebag] used to tell me we needed to put guitar solos in KORN," Welch explained. "So this song's for him, and to him. It's saying how much I miss him. Even though we weren't too close, his very friendly personality had a great impact on me!"
Welch is currently completing work on his solo CD, which is tentatively due later in the year. The as-yet-untitled effort may include another track which Welch has described as "a personal letter to 50 CENT from God."
"The Big Guy speaks through me a lot when I write, and I have a song for 50 CENT I wrote in the Holy Land. I feel like it's a personal letter to 50 from God, so I'm going to give it to him personally and see what his reaction is," Welch explained to MTV News. "If it's a positive reaction and he's willing to talk to me, then I'm not gonna release it, but if the reaction is not positive, I'm going to share it with the world."
Brian concluded, "This CD is full of heart-grabbing music, man! I can't wait to get it out!"

KORN have been working primarily with producers Matrix (AVRIL LAVIGNE, THE MOONEY SUZUKI) and Atticus Ross (BAD RELIGION, PINK) on the follow-up to 2003's "Take a Look in the Mirror". Only one track from the band's sessions with Dallas Austin is slated to appear on the effort, with the album's previously announced collaboration with rapper THE GAME, "Revolution", having already been scratched from the album's track list. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Liar", "Politix", "Last Legal Drug", "Le Petit Mort", "It's Me Again", "Coming Undone", "I've Seen It All" and "Souvenir of Sadness". An October release is expected.
Despite previous reports to the contrary, the title of KORN's forthcoming CD is not "Souvenir of Sadness". KORN frontman Jonathan Davis has told MTV.com that the upcoming disc hasn't been given a proper title just yet; although, he admits, "Souvenir of Sadness", one of the album's cuts, is in the running, along with a host of other possibilities.
With regards to the new album's musical direction, Davis said, "It's funky, it's heavy, it's dark and sometimes, industrial-tinged. Working with so many different people and everything, it's made it out to be a really well-rounded album of a lot of different things. It's definitely KORN, it's definitely groove-oriented. But it's our most experimental album to date. We're very excited. We're all sitting around, when we listen to it, looking at each other going, 'I can't believe that's us.' I think people are really going to dig it. It's not like the first KORN album, where it's very aggressive and screaming all over the place. There's that in this album, yes, but I've taken all of the years of six albums, and taken what I've learned from that and molded it into one, and thrown a big twist on it. It's really hard to explain without hearing it. But it's very large and in charge and massively heavy. There's a lot of melody in it, a lot of screaming — just a lot of amazing things in it."
KORN lost one of their founding members, Brian "Head" Welch, to the unlikely culprit of Christianity back in late February; guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer has been pulling double duty in the studio since Head's departure. None of this, Davis says, has had much of an effect on the recording process, though.
"Head had been having problems for years, and he wasn't really there. ... For a lot of the records, he was there, but he wasn't there," Davis said. "When we were writing, he did his thing. But we're not going to replace him. With Head leaving, it would be weird having another guitar player in KORN. I'd never say it will never happen, but right now, we're going to be a four-piece. I don't know if we'll have somebody onstage or we'll have someone playing guitar maybe offstage. We'll figure that out. We haven't even gotten to that point. Having someone new onstage would be weird. We've been a band for 12 years, and to have that guy missing, it would be weird to just jump in and have someone else there. Things may change."

Fear Factory are to release their new album entitled, "Transgression", and have set an August 23. The album will be produced by Toby Wright (Metallica, Alice In Chains, Korn). Also, Billy Gold from Faith No More will be contributing bass to two songs on the album entitled, "Echo of My Scream" and "Super Nova". Other tracks are as follows:

Korn fan site Korn Unleashed has published the second part of their recent interview with Korn guitarist James 'Munky' Shaffer, where he was asked about the departure of Brian 'Head' Welch and how they'll handle performing live without him. "We will hire someone to play in the back (guitar) and David [Silveria, drums] will trigger some samples," Munky said. Asked who they planned on bringing in for the second guitar slot, Shaffer responded, "Someone close to us already...not just some stanger. There's not gonna be some big auditions or anything."

KORN have finished recording the drums for their upcoming studio album and "they turned out amazing," according to an online posting by the group's lead singer, Jonathan Davis. "[On Tuesday, April 26] we start Munky [guitar] and Fieldy [bass]," Davis writes.
According Davis, KORN have worked with several producers during the pre-production stage for the follow-up to 2003's "Take a Look in the Mirror", including Linda Perry, Atticus Clark, The Matrix, and Dallas Austin. Among the cuts that are slated for inclusion on the upcoming CD are "Liar", "Revolution" (described by Davis as "an old-school PARLIAMENT tune"), "Polotix", "Last Legal Drug", "Le Petit Mort" and "Souvenir of Sadness". Davis has hinted that the forthcoming effort may be a double-disc affair, although this has yet to be officially confirmed. A tentative September release is expected.
KORN and rapper XZIBIT's newly recorded cover of PUBLIC ENEMY's "Fight the Power" is among the exclusive tracks are featured on the soundtrack for "XXX: State of the Union", out now on Jive Records.
"XXX: State of the Union" opens April 29 in U.S. theaters. It's the sequel to the 2002 film "XXX", which starred Vin Diesel.

In the mid-90s Nu-Metal was an exciting, emerging twist in modern rock music that promised to exchange the best ideas in rock and rap for a single - hybrid music that could expose each style's audience to the other. However, as the 90s gave way and the millennium changed, the second wave of Nu-Metal (NM2) got further away from its hip-hop roots and closer to the dark side of heavy metal. The genre is virtually dismissible, but can it come back from the edge of death?
The first wave of Nu-Metal (NM1) was a hybrid of rap and rock music pioneered by soon-to-be staples of the genera Korn, the Deftones and Rage Against the Machine. It was pioneering and new because, unlike the oft-noted collaborations between Run DMC and Aerosmith or between Public Enemy and Anthrax, the NM1 scene wasn't based on a rock musician pounding out the beats and the emcees simply rapping over the established record.
Rather, NM1 musicians familiar with the repertoire of hip-hop's percussion section transcribed and played those beats (especially the snare and high-hat parts) as rhythm on a detuned, overdriven electric guitar. Ergo, the importance of the riff, which itself had been so dominant in eighties rock, was largely missing.
As a result, Nu-Metal made the listener want to jump up and down rather than pump twin, clenched fists in the air. It was ultra-aggressive hip-hop, or it was modest, unassuming rock. Either way, it was crossing genres and exposing new listeners to the ideas inherent in the parent style's musical genotype.
There ended the exciting part. In the late 90s Nu-Metal got heavier and louder. Korn gave way to Limp Bizkit, to Taproot, then to Mudvayne. By the time Slipknot had entered the scene, the double-kick drum was back, the screaming was incessant, and virtually no rapping was taking place.
Whereas, visually, earlier bands projected an image of body piercing, seriously baggy clothes and short haircuts, the post-Slipknot NM2 had opted instead for tattoos, long hair and regular-fit, all black clothing. By 1999, things were again starting to look orthodox

According to a post on the KORN fan site KornWeb.cjb.net, KORN frontman Jonathan Davis revealed during an online chat Sunday (March 27) that he will once again be collaborating with rapper Lil Jon on an as-yet-untitled "crunk rock" song. Davis was said to be unsure if the track will end up on Lil Jon's next album or it will surface on an upcoming soundtrack. Jonathan also explained that he and Lil Jon have many things in common, including the fact that both artists have a 9-year-old son named Nathan.
KORN had previously collaborated with Lil Jon on a cover of PUBLIC ENEMY's "Fight the Power", but the rapper's contributions were subsequently replaced by those of XZIBIT ? allegedly due to an unspecified "record company" issue. The KORN/XZIBIT collaboration will surface on the soundtrack for "XXX: State of the Union", due April 19 via Jive.
As previously reported, the recording sessions for KORN's as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2003's "Take a Look in the Mirror" are scheduled to begin on April 11. A September release is expected.
Former KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch has defended himself against accusations by KORN singer Jonathan Davis that he has embarked on a "false crusade" by leaving the band to focus on Christianity. In an e-mail sent to MTV News, Welch said he still loves his KORN brethren, but that he was beginning to bristle at those who doubt the sincerity of his transformation.
"Sorry Jonathan, my 'false crusade' was not the reason I left KORN, it was what saved my life," Welch wrote. "I still love those guys to death, but if anybody trashes God, I am human and will defend Him and myself by any means necessary."
Welch's solo CD is close to being completed, and he added that he's just finished one instrumental track called "A Letter to Dimebag", which he wrote in tribute to the late guitar legend.
"It's a guitar-solo instrumental," he explained, according to MTV News. "I wrote it for Dimebag because he always used to tell Munky and I to put guitar solos in KORN's music."
Another track which may or may not get released is — as Welch described it — "a personal letter to 50 CENT from God."

Total Rock is reporting that Korn's Jonathan Davis, Dizzy Reed from Guns N' Roses and Joshua Todd of Buckcherry all have cameo roles in the new movie 'The Still Life'. So far, there are no further details on the project.
