Mike Portnoy To Collaborate w/ Opeth's Akerfeldt?

Jakob Herrmann of Drummer's Digest recently conducted an interview with DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On whether the technical side of the band's music superior to the musical side:

Portnoy: "We try to have a balance. There's times when we know we want to write stuff that's very technical, and at that point it's dictated by our technical abilities. But then there's other times where we wanna cool it out and really concentrate on the song, and that's when we wanna put the technical side on the shelf and try to really concentrate on the songwriting. I think 'Octavarium' is a perfect example of that balance. There's a little bit of all of those things on the album."

On how the band's last album, "Octavarium", compares to the earlier ones:

Portnoy: "I wouldn't say it's a new direction, we've always kind of done what we do, which is a balance of progressive, heavy and kind of melodic, you know? We've always tried to have all of those elements, so I can't say the new album is a new direction. It's just the latest version of what DREAM THEATER does."

On the rumors about "Octavarium" contains connections and references to earlier albums:

Portnoy: "Not necessarily. 'Octavarium' is a concept album. It's got a lot of threads through it. Musically, visually, through the artwork and the layout, sonically in the production and the sound effects. It's a concept album where all the songs kind of relate to each other."

On the fact that he is a singing drummer:

Portnoy: "I've been doing that with DREAM THEATER now for about seven years. I sing backing vocals when we're in the studio as well. I actually find it easy. I don't consider myself a great singer, you know, but I think there's enough to give a good quality harmony to the song, which I think is important. If you listen to the guys in YES or whatever, they didn't have the greatest voices, but it's the blend that created the good harmony. And also with the vocals I write, I write them with more than one vocal in mind, usually for counter-point call-and-answer kind of thing. My vocal parts aren't always harmonies. Sometimes they're back trading lines back and forth."

On the rumors saying that he and Mikael Åkerfeldt, the mastermind behind Swedish metal act OPETH, are planning to do something together:

Portnoy: "Yeah, he's coming down tonight actually. Most of the guys are. I've been a fan of theirs for years, and we've become friends the last couple of years. He and I and Steven Wilson [of PORCUPINE TREE] have talked about doing something together. Hopefully some time soon we'll be able to coordinate our schedules and make it happen. I think me and Steven want to make it heavy, and I think Mikael wants to, uh, not be heavy. Because me and Steven want to do stuff that we can't do with PORCUPINE TREE and DREAM THEATER, and get to some really heavy stuff. And I think that Mikael wants to get away from the heavy stuff because he does that all the time with OPETH, so who knows. Maybe we'll meet somewhere in the middle. I think it'll be great. I mean, I've had great experiences collaborating with other people, especially people who are the kind of leaders of their bands. That was kind of what TRANSATLANTIC was about, since Neal Morse and Roine Stolt are kind of the leaders of their bands, you know. It was a great creative environment, and I think a similar chemistry would happen with Steven and Mikael."

Dark Tranquillity Misses First Show Of Opeth Tour

Dark Tranquillity have posted the following message on their official website explaining why they missed the first show of the Opeth tour:

"As most of you have heard, we didn't play the 1st gig of the tour due to a missed flight in Paris. Due to foggy weather conditions, the plane from Gothenburg to Paris took off a bit later than scheduled. Despite the airline staff guaranteeing that they'd keep the connecting plane to Atlanta on hold and even arranging a special shuttle taking us to the gate as quickly as possible, we were met with a "too late, sorry" response when trying to check in.

"Our management checked all possible options for booking a new flight to allow us to make it to Raleigh in time, but ultimately we had no other choice than to wait for the next Paris-Atlanta flight 24 hours later.

"We're really sorry for the inconvenience caused, but hope that everyone understands that what happened was solely the fault of Delta Airlines and not the band, management or any promotor. We did our outmost to solve the problem, but unfortunately it couldn't be done."

MTV2 Headbangers Ball: The Revenge Details

MTV2 and Roadrunner Records have announced the release of the third installment in the successful series – MTV2 HEADBANGERS BALL: THE REVENGE. The low priced, double-disc is due in stores on April 11, 2006.

On the heels of the Gold certification of the first installment, MTV2 HEADBANGERS BALL, VOLUME 1 and the success with MTV2 HEADBANGERS BALL, VOLUME 2, MTV2 and Roadrunner Records once again set out to gather the very best in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. The result is more than 2 1/2 hours of music on 2 CDs: disc one represents the strongest tracks from today's biggest rock bands, and disc two brings together the strongest up-and-comers from the underground rock scene.

In addition to the genre-defining anthems that represent the best of the show, there are enough rare and unreleased tracks to satisfy tastemaker metal fans as well. Packed with a total of 38 hard-charging tracks, this collection has 7 exclusive offerings. They include the Terry Date mix of Slipknot's "Before I Forget", and the live recording of Killswitch Engage's "A Bid Farewell", which both see their first CD release on this compilation. Other exclusives are brand new tracks from Hatebreed and Walls Of Jericho, both of which were written especially for this release (Hatebreed's lead vocalist, Jamey Jasta, is the host of the Headbangers Ball program on MTV2). A video for the Hatebreed track, entitled "To The Threshold", will air on video channels in March. A side project of Jasta's, Kingdom of Sorrow (which also includes members of Down, Crowbar and Seemless), also throws a brand new track into the ring. The compilation beat Dragonforce and 36 Crazyfists' record releases to the punch with fresh new tracks from these up-and-comers.

Opeth Frontman Comments On Arrested Bus Driver

OPETH mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt has commented on the recent arrest of their bus driver Leon R. Whitman who was charged on Tuesday (November 15th) with one felony count of using a child for a sexual performance, three counts of computer pornography and one count each of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and interfering with custody.

"Our busdriver on the last North American tour was arrested in Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL for "unlawful activity with a minor". Basically we're appalled by the fact that we'd employed this bastard and even more disgusted by his deeds and obviously we will be much more detailed in our background check for future employments. The driver introduced himself only as "Rod" and seemed like a nice guy, even though for us he was just another driver, and a bad one as well! He said he owned a trailer company and that he was a drummer, playing with TED NUGENT and several other bands in the '70's. We got suspicious that he couldn't get into Canada (we had another driver there) due to some previous drug "misdemeanors". Myself and Peter (Lindgren - guitars) met him and the girl in the elevator of the hotel where he introduced her as his niece. She seemed distant, asking us if we smoked pot. "Rod" told us he was driving her to Los Angeles. After the gig, he never returned to the bus and then we got the news that he'd been arrested. Luckily for us one of Nevermore's crew was able to drive us back to the hotel. The next day the FBI stopped our tour manager outside the bus with a warrant to search the bus for "Rod's" laptop and camera. We feel genuinely happy that he is caught and behind bars where we hope he will stay for a long time."
