Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth just posted this lengthy message online about the recent deaths of David Bowie and Lemmy from Motorhead:
"At the time of hearing the news of Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister’s passing on the early morning of the 28th of December I felt a familiar feeling deep inside. That of losing someone really close. Someone who’s been present in your life for its whole duration.
"It’s a very strange feeling that you can be so attached to someone you don’t even know, and I didn’t know Lemmy at all. I’ve met him on a couple of occasions. I remember calling him 'Ian' as I’d had a few beers and wanted to come off as someone that possessed a little bit of a deeper knowledge of him than the aggressive selfie-hunters. Obviously I failed miserably and I don’t think he liked me very much, and he didn’t want to be called 'Ian' at all. He’s 'Lemmy' and that’s that.
"So on the subsequent meetings I resorted to a respectful nod and perhaps a feeble sounding 'Hi!.' I saw/shared a bill with Motörhead many times, and I’m very happy I managed to catch their final headlining show here in Stockholm on December 4th. The place was packed. At a legendary venue for metal in my hometown. Hovet. There’s a special feeling in the air. As usual it was a celebration of heavy music as well as that of Motörhead, Saxon and Girlschool who were on tour together. But I also think a lot of people at the event knew that it’s possibly the last time they’d be able to see Motörhead. At least on a headlining tour. It was quite magical I have to say. There’s a profound feeling of respect in the air throughout the evening. I can’t recall any previous show I’ve ever been to that had that same vibe, or even similar. More...
Celebrating a 25th anniversary, Opeth today launches the band's first beer with Leeds (UK) based brewery, Northern Monk Brew Co. Limited to just 1700 660ml bottles, the 9.2% XXV Anniversary Imperial Stout is a one-off brew.
Descended from the strongest Stout Porter brewed in Britain in the 18th Century it's brewed with 10 different malts for uttermost complexity of flavour - big, dark and full in mouthfeel, expect roasted flavours with underlying notes of rich chocolate, cinder toffee and coffee. Designed to sip slowly and share with friends, drink one now and save one as the flavours will develop over time.
Russell Bisset (founder) of Northern Monk Brew Co comments: "We’re big metal fans at Northern Monk and Opeth is often the soundtrack to our brewing. When the opportunity to work with the band came up, we jumped at the chance. Opeth have been taking the same progressive and quality driven approach to music that we have to beer for the past 25 years and it was great to work with them. Our aim was to make one of the most bold and forward thinking brewery and band collaborations ever. We got together at the brewery tap room and tasted our range of beers with them and together came up with a couple of recipes."
As a fan of quality beer himself Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt has also expressed his excitement: "Even if we’re musicians firstly, we’re beer drinkers secondly. Kind of. Let me rephrase: We love beer. We love good beer. We’ve turned into culinary connoisseurs of late. Not too much snobbery however. We just love good food and drinks. So when we were approached by the fantastic Northern Monk brewery to do a Opeth signature beer we simply could not turn it down. More...

Considering the huge potential for crossover between metal and gaming fans, it's always baffled me that there aren't more heavy metal focused video game soundtracks. Rather than going for sounds that make the player bang their heads and launch their controller through the television, most games – even highly action focused ones – tend to stick with more tepid ambient soundtracks based on electronica. Techno is about as “heavy” as most game soundtracks tend to get.
This week we're going to take a look at a handful of games that buck that trend and offer up honest-to-Lucifer extreme metal in their playlists. Not an exhaustive list (and we'll be looking at more in the future), this is just a few that are worth your time and are notable for their inclusion of tracks from excellent metal bands or for having original soundtracks rooted strongly in the metal tradition.
This one's a no-brainer, as it's essentially THE heavy metal video game, created solely to celebrate our beloved genre. Eddie may be a lowly roadie, but through the power of metal (and a battleax, wicked car, and some magic powers) he can annihilate the goths, please the gods, and get the girl (or two).
Although it seems like a gimmick to get heavy music fans interested, the gameplay is actually really solid and revolves around three different styles: strategy large-scale combat as a general over an army, open world GTA car driving shenanigans, and elements of combat-heavy action games like God of War or Dante's Inferno
The game features more than 100 metal tracks (some of which have to be unlocked in-game) covering a huge range of sub-genres with everything from In Flames to Cradle Of Filth, along with a whole lot of classics from the likes of Motorhead and Judas Priest.
Metal will descend upon Schleswig-Holstein, Germany for the annual mecca of all festivals. 80,000 are expected at the long sold out event, which features - among many - the return of Savatage and Running Wild to the live stage.
As usual, the schedule is subject to change, but as of press time the following acts will be broadcast (all times CET so deduct 6 hours for EST and so on):
17h45 - In Extremo
19h20 - Grailknights
20h10 - Mambo Kurt

Last summer, Opeth announced a book was in the works chronicling the Swedish band's history. Now the group has revealed that work is finally finished, with Opeth commenting:
"As you may know Opeth have been hard at work these past few years to put together a very nice and informative coffee table style biography for release later this year and we're pleased to announce that the book is now available for pre-order. More details on how to sign up found here."
Publisher Rocket88 also comments: "The official Book of Opeth is published to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Get your name printed in the roll of Honour and become a part of the book when you preorder.
"This sumptuously illustrated oral history presents Opeth’s unique tale, from their earliest days until the present, and all in glorious dark colour. Told in the first-person by Mikael, the band, their friends, former members and collaborators including designer Travis Smith, it is illustrated throughout with hundreds of previously unseen and rare photos, artworks and memorabilia.
"Here, for the first time, is the true and complete story of Opeth, revealed in all its terrible and magnificent glory, and illuminated by early, personal, candid, live and studio photographs." More...

The unique shows, dubbed "An Evening with Opeth," are set for October 22nd at New York’s Beacon Theater and October 24th at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theater and will see Opeth celebrating its career with two unique sets each night.
The once-progressive Swedes will perform 2005's "Ghost Reveries" album in its entirety (which in turn is celebrating its 10th anniversary), plus a second set of classics from the band's entire 25-year career. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 1st at 10:00AM local time with VIP/Fan Club Presale beginning Wednesday, April 29th at 10:00AM local time.
Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt commented on the performances: “The forces that be put up a very mystical and subtle little advert on the so called internet. Yes, we will celebrate 25 years of being Opeth in 2015 and this is reason enough to gather up the forces and play. For you.”
Opeth’s upcoming return to North America marks the group’s second tour of the states since the release of latest album "Pale Communion." More...
The Sun is shining and Bloodstock is excited to announce seven more of metal’s finest for the UK’s heaviest weekender, including a clutch of bands from the farthest flung corners of the globe.
Friday’s line up will now include extreme prog metal Aussies, Ne Obliviscaris. The band proclaims, “UK, here we come! 2015 is the year we are finally going to reach your shores and we couldn’t be more excited to announce that it will be as part of the enormous Bloodstodck festival. We’re looking forward to playing alongside many of the best and biggest heavy acts from across the world!”
Saturday’s bill sees two bands who’ve jetted in from Indonesia, a hotbed of metal and one of the planet’s most burgeoning heavy music scenes. Burgerkill and Jasad are two of the country’s biggest metal acts, even counting the country’s metal-loving prime minister, Joko Widodo among their fans.
Sunday’s line-up sees a very special solo set from ex-Evile shredsman, Ol Drake to accompany his upcoming solo album, "Old Rake" which is out in June via Earache. Ol comments "I'm very excited to be returning to Bloodstock in a musical capacity. The weekend is fully booked off work (I was going anyway) and we're rehearsing right now. It’ll be a very special show, so don’t miss it. I’ll no doubt be having my fair share of drinks and Jagermeister afterwards and no doubt be returning to work feeling buzzed yet terrible. This is probably the only show I'll be doing to promote the album. Hope to see you there!" More...
A new video preview of the upcoming book "And Justice For Art: Stories About Heavy Metal Album Covers" has been released. Check it out below.
This book includes more than 400 color graphics, 100 exclusive interviews and revealing details about the making of iconic album artworks for bands like Obituary, Death, Neurosis, Slayer, Opeth, At The Gates, Metallica, Amorphis, Cattle Decapitation, Cormorant, Disincarnate, Testament, and many more!
According to Morbid Angel’s frontman, David, Vincent (who wrote the foreword), this 264-pages book is set to become “a historical document about the importance of Metal album covers.”
Hot on the heels of last week’s five band announcement, the Bloodstock Festival is excited to reveal five more acts.
First up is British outfit Lawnmower Deth, confirmed for the Sophie Lancaster Stage on Sunday. The band comments: “Motorbonce famously said, ‘if we move in next door, your lawn will die.’ Quite what positioned our forefathers to even remotely claim knowledge of horticultural metal is well beyond us. Scott Ian famously said, ‘I am the law’. In fact, this simply proves that adult literacy levels within the metal genre are in line with that of the national average; quite shit, when he clearly cannot spell and meant LAWN. In a Nostradamus kind of way what these two legends of metal were pointing you to was... 'Bloodstock 2015, when we move in you will die happy, we are Lawnmower and we is well excited. Let’s party like it’s 1988.'"
Taking over the Sophie Stage on Friday are raucous Brighton noisemakers Oaf. Chief bellower Dom Lawson exclaims, "We, the mighty Oaf, are honoured and delighted to have been invited back to our favourite festival. If you saw us in 2013, please don't hold that against us. Do come along and observe our ongoing descent into senility. If you haven't seen us before, we're like a middle-aged Royal Blood for people that don't wet the bed (and with added swearing). This will be a splendid occasion and we're tumescent with joy at the very thought of it. Cheers!"
Liverpudlian black metallers Ethereal will join the fray on the Sophie Stage on Saturday. The band is currently doing a stint with Marduk and Belphegor, supporting first full-length album "Opus Aethereum," released last month by Candlelight Records.
Sunday brings symphonic black metallers Saille all the way from Belgium to the Sophie Lancaster Stage. Expect to hear some new songs from latest, third album "Eldritch." Bringing the mischief and mayhem on Friday to the Sophie Stage, are Dirty Sanchez lads Pritchard Vs Dainton.
The currently announced lineup is:
Ronnie James Dio Stage
Rob Zombie, Trivium, Within Temptation. Opeth, Sabaton, Black Label Society, Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse, Ihsahn, Orange Goblin, Death DTA, Nuclear Assault, 1349, Dark Angel, Armored Saint, Belphegor, Overkill, Ensiferum, Agalloch, Enslaved, Pro Pain, Korpiklaani, Wolf, Napalm Death
Sophie Lanaster Stage
Delain, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Godflesh, Batallion, Mordred, Destrage, Onslaught, Conan, Planet Of Zues, Bast, Lawnmower Deth, Oaf, Ethereal, Saille, Pritchard Vs Dainton More...
The organizers of the Bloodstock Festival are excited to announce their third headliner for the Sophie Lancaster Stage, and a slew of other Sophie stage bands for the August 2015 event.
Industrial outfit Godflesh is to headline Sunday night on the Sophie Lancaster stage. Frontman Justin Broadrick comments: “Godflesh is thrilled to be playing a very metal UK festival! We don’t get asked to play many, as we’re often viewed as not ‘real’ metal enough, or we’re generally seen as outsiders, which we are, thank you. That doesn’t mean we don’t like to be invited to be a real metal band once in a while and especially in the Derbyshire countryside! Thank you Bloodstock!“
British thrash stalwarts Onslaught also join the Sophie stage line-up on Sunday. The band is celebrating the 30th anniversary in 2015 of debut album, "Power From Hell," with a special EP on the cards for release and special anniversary merch available.
Self-appointed "caveman battle doom" 3-piece, Conan will crash Friday’s Sophie bill. Having recently returned from a string of shows in Australia and mainland Europe, Conan is prepping for a slot on the Maryland DeathFest this summer, before bringing an unholy wall of sound to Catton Park in August.
Greek southern-tinged heavy rockers Planet Of Zeus step up for a Sophie stage slot on Saturday, while London’s blackened doomsters Bast also join the Friday bill. The currently announced lineup for the 2015 edition is as follows: More...
Opeth has checked in with the following announcement about guitarist Fredrik Akesson appearing in a new documentary:
"Our very own Fredrik 'Kulle' Åkesson will be featured in an upcoming documentary called Axemen of Sweden. Go check out the trailer below. The documentary will probably be ready around May. More news on that later.
"Other guitarists featured are Kee Marcello (Europe), John Norum (Europe), Mattias IA Eklundh (Freak Kitchen), Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry) and many more..."
Feeling the winter chill creeping in? Bloodstock to the rescue then, with three more bands announced to get you hot under the collar.
Norwegian extremists Enslaved are added to Bloodstock’s Main Stage next summer. With a new album due in March 2015 via Nuclear Blast, expect to bang your head to some brand new tunes. Guitarist Ivar Bjørnson states:
“We’ve been to Bloodstock once before in 2009, and not only did we understand then why it has become the most important UK Metal festival – but it has grown to mammoth-proportions since. In sum; what an absolute pleasure and honour to be invited back. We like to think that we too have developed somewhat; having a few new, pretty awesome albums and world tours under our (over-stretched) belts. We can’t wait to come and show the Bloodstock crowd what we’ve been up to. To quote one of our spiritual beacons; General Melchett: 'If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.'"
Hailing from the frozen wilds of Finland, folk metal six-piece Korpiklaani is set to join the fray in a UK exclusive appearance. Guitarist Country Cane tells us; "After having great fun and sold out shows ?with our good friends in Sabaton and TÝR, we are excited to be back in the UK to play Bloodstock in 2015. We plan to return and get the crowds singing and dancing Korpiklaani style on our next rock n roll adventure.” More...
While everyone’s talking about Christmas approaching, the Bloodstock festival organizer's sights are firmly fixed on next August. What better way to roll into the festive season than to announce three more crackin’ bands for 2015’s premier heavy metal event?
First up is thrash outfit Overkill. Front man Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth says: “We are loading the BIG guns and setting sail for the UK this summer! Be warned! The island is in danger, it's a White Devil Army....Lets make Bloodstock 2015 a bloodbath!”
Folk metal Finns Ensiferum are also joining the party, having recently wrapped recording on brand new album, "One Man Army," set for release on February 23rd.
Austrian blackened death metal overlords Belphegor will also make a return to Catton Park in 2015. Frontman/guitarist and founder Helmuth Lehner comments: “Belphegor returns to the ingenious Bloodstock Open Air! We will play at the main stage and promote our latest offering ‘Conjuring The Dead.’ Belphegor will bring you the most intense ritual possible. Join the pit and prepare for Diabolical Death Metal chaos.” More...
Sweden's Opeth has now released a visualizer clip for each of the tracks on new album "Pale Communion."
You can check out the latest video for "Faith In Others" below, and if you missed the rest, they can all be seen at the Roadrunner Records YouTube page here.

Opeth is set to celebrate the band's landmark 25th anniversary next year with a very special event at the London Palladium on October 18th, 2015.
The unique show, dubbed "An Evening with Opeth," will feature two sets from the retro rocking Swedes, including 2005's "Ghost Reveries" album in its entirety (which in turn is celebrating its 10th anniversary), plus a second set of tracks from the band's 25-year career.
Frontman Mikael Akerfeldt is looking forward to the show, and had this to say:
"The forces that be put up a very mystical and subtle little advert on the so called internet. Yes, we will celebrate 25 years of being Opeth in 2015 and this is reason enough to gather up the forces and play. For you. At the Palladium in London. Not sure if they have a dress-code there, as it is a posh little place. Do we care? No we don’t. It will be a pretty unique evening I reckon, hopefully free of technical difficulties. No thanks to Baal! With that said, we are a live band in the true sense of the word and you can never be certain. Regardless it will be a blast and I strongly advise you to think about attending. But don’t think for too long. It might cost you your seat! We’re currently on tour (Hey! Thanks European progrockdeathmetalheads! You are absolutely fantastic and we love you!) and I’m being called for, so gotta dash. Ta-ta!"
Tickets go on general sale at 9am this Friday 14th November and will be available from this locaiton, with a pre-sale set for 9am Thursday 13th. A very limited amount of VIP upgrades, priced at £150 will also be available on pre-sale which allow early entry into the venue, a 20 minute meet n' greet with the band, a commemorative VIP laminate pass, a gift box containing 3 hand engraved, show-exclusive Opeth red wine glasses (exclusive to VIPs of this show only), a tour poster printed on canvas (also exclusive to VIPs of this show only) and your choice of t-shirt from the merch booth.
The upcoming book "...And Justice For Art" tells the stories behind the making of album covers like Slayer's "Reign In Blood, "Death's "Symbolic," Carcass' "Heartwork," At The Gates' "Slaughter Of The Soul," Opeth's "Heritage," and many others.
It features more than 400 color images including the works of H.R. Giger, Eliran Kantor, Travis Smith, Ken Kelly, Dan Seagrave and interviews with bands like Carcass, Testament, Enslaved, Iced Earth, Cattle Decapitation, Morbid Angel, While Heaven Wept, Cormorant, Mayhem and much more.
There are only two days left in the book's crowd funding campaign and there's still time to claim one of the limited run of 400 print copies. Head over to this location to see the perks for pledging and take part in the campaign. More...
This Halloween, Bloodstock has some howlingly good news to share! Are you a fan of the undead? Love zombies? The fiendishly brilliant Rob Zombie is confirmed as Sunday’s 2015 main stage headliner, bringing his full production to Catton Park.
Rob Zombie exclaims, "I am so ready to get on a plane, and get my ass over to merry ol' England for Bloodstock. We've had some of the best shows of our lives over there and can't wait to add this to the list. Besides, it's called ‘Bloodstock' so how could it not be bloody fucking fun?”
Expect to witness a spectacular range of Rob Zombie classics as well as choice cuts from the band’s most recent studio album "Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor." Check out this cut below of "Superbeast" from last year’s "The Zombie Horror Picture Show" DVD, which captured Rob and his zombie bandmates John 5, Piggy D, and Ginger Fish on the road.
Other bands confirmed for the 2015 festival include Within Temptation, Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Sepultura, Death DTA, Dark Angel, Ihsahn, and Nuclear Assault. More...
