The worst inspiration in choosing which bands get covered in the Sunday Old School column is always whenever a band member dies. With the sad passing of Pagan Altar vocalist, Terry Jones this past week, it seemed only fitting that we take a look at one of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal's lesser known, though highly influential bands, who along with contemporaries, Witchfinder General, were a big part of forging the genre we know today as doom metal.
Pagan Altar was founded in 1978 by Terry Jones, along with his brother Alan on guitar and were joined in their venture by Glenn Robinson, Les Moody and Ivor Harper. Somewhat typically for heavy metal bands of their time, they focused on occult themes and dark subject matter, though without being as overtly Satanic as Venom, for example. This original lineup didn't last long and at the beginning of the eighties, Pagan Altar consisted of what is now known as their "classic" lineup, which saw the Jones brothers joined by bassist Trever Portch and Israeli native, John Mizrahi on drums. Shadow Kingdom Records is now offering the newly reissued "Judgement of the Dead" from cult NWOBHM doom band Pagan Altar. Originally released in 1982, Shadow Kingdom Records will stock North American shelves with this classic on January 8, 2013. Until then, fans can order the release exclusively through Shadow Kingdom Records.
For a digital copy and free stream of the album, visit the label's bandcamp page. Physical copies are available at the Shadow Kingdom Records Webstore. Shadow Kingdom's Tim McGrogan had this to say about the album:
Back in 1982 Pagan Altar released this NWOBHM masterpiece and almost immediately this album went into obscurity. They have been by far the most over looked band in the history of heavy metal music. It's amazing that they've finally pulled it all together for being virtually non-existent for nearly 15 years. They deserve all of the success and recognition they're getting today and much, much more!
In the late 90's they came out of the woodwork and put this out on their own label and it was mistakenly called "Volume 1". The extra track was an acoustic track which was just called "Acoustics" at the time. This is the first time this album will be released in all its glory, with the correct title "Judgement of the Dead" and updated acoustic song title as well. Also, this is the original artwork that was released back in 1982 which has never been seen before until now!
We've re-mastered the CD to sonically preserve its antique feel. It comes with a very nice booklet that includes a story and old band photos. If there ever was such a thing as a perfect album, this would be it! There is nothing more satisfying than the sound of this record. If you've never heard of this band or album, think of Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull and you're almost there. They take music to a whole new level.

With Sonar closing, the location of 2013's Maryland DeathFest XI was up in the air. The organizers have finally announced that the fest will be held in the same location as last year, and will be expanded. Maryland DeathFest XI will take place in Baltimore, Maryland on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, 2013. Tickets go on sale on October 15th at 12 pm (EST). You can read the entire update below:
We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.
In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.
The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will allow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.
We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.

Shadow Kingdom Records has set September 11th as the date for worldwide release of "The Time Lord" EP from 70s cult NWOBHM act Pagan Altar. Consisting of remastered material from as far back as 1978, "The Time Lord" has five tracks which are posted below. Shadow Kingdom Records owner Tim McGrogan had this to say about "The Time Lord":
Pagan Altar is arguably the very best band in the entire world that has flown under the radar for far too many years. It gives me great pleasure to announce this amazing EP release. This N.W.O.B.H.M. band is still going strong as they have wrote a mountain of music that has since been released over the years on its very own label. These are the oldest known recordings to exist dating all the way back to 1978! These are demo recordings and they didn't properly record a few of these other songs until later on.
These demo recordings are the birth of what I believe is one of the very best bands ever existing. This album has atmosphere written all over it and there's no one that remotely sounds like Pagan Altar. Bands and people today are just discovering these sounds for the first time and now they influence a ton of music that's being written today in the metal world. The CD version has been re-mastered to scrub and preserve this recording to the best possible sound that we can deliver. This has not been released on vinyl until now.
Shadow King Records is currently streaming "The Black Mass" at this location, or you may listen to it below in the player.
