Spiritual Beggars' Debut Album To Be Reissued

Regain Records has announced that it will be reissuing the debut album from Spiritual Beggars.

Originally released in 1994 by Wrong Again Records (the label that later became Regain Records) the self-titled album was the world’s introduction to former Carcass guitarist Mike Amott’s hard rock alter ego. Through the course of six albums, all released as as Amott’s schedule has permitted in between his work with current band Arch Enemy, Spiritual Beggars has shaken its image as a mere side project and established itself as a genre-defining band in its own rite.

Wrong Again's second release ever, "Spiritual Beggars" has been a tough find for quite some time, and now more recent converts to the band will have the opportunity to sample the band's beginnings. Older fans will also be interested to find four bonus tracks on the reissue: "Blind Mountain," "If You Should Leave," "Nowhere To Go," and "Sour Stains."

Arch Enemy Drummer Speaks On Carcass Rehearsals

Lucem Fero has issued an interview with ARCH ENEMY drummer Daniel Erlandsson, conducted by Welsh interviewer Anthony Morgan. The following is an excerpt:

Q: Is there a reason why Arch Enemy worked with Fredrik (Nordström) again, after all those years?
A: "Yeah. We did a few albums with Andy Sneap, and he also mixed a DVD (2006's Live Apocalypse) for us. We had worked with Andy for a couple of years, so we wanted to try something slightly different. In some ways, we set out to have a slightly more aggressive album in terms of the sound. With Andy Sneap, you get a really clear, clinical and precise production. Andy's production is awesome in its own way. We wanted to try something different though, and that was the idea."

Q: Could you tell me about your personal contributions to Rise Of The Tyrant?
A: "Yeah. Apart from drumming, my personal contribution to Rise of the Tyrant was just being part of the whole writing process. As Chris (Amott) had obviously left the group before, I arranged the songs together with Michael (Amott) this time around. When Chris returned, we already had most of the album written. He had some ideas that surfaced on the album, but it was mostly me and Michael who rehearsed the songs."

Q: What was it like getting Chris back onboard?
A: "It's great; it's good to have him back. He missed out on two years of touring basically, though he played on Doomsday Machine (2005). For that reason, he wasn't really out of the group so to speak. Chris returning is like a family member returning."

Q: When Arch Enemy filmed the video for 'Revolution Begins', your hair reportedly caught fire. Is that correct?
A: "It's partially correct, although the story has been exaggerated."

Q: Could you set the record straight as concerns that story?
A: "Yeah. It didn't really catch fire that way. I actually had a wall of fire behind me when I played drums, and the wind changed. The fire didn't actually touch my hair but it got too close. For that reason, it basically got too warm. It basically melted one of the sides of my hair, and it frizzed up. I had to cut my hair a little bit."

Q: It has been mentioned that Arch Enemy intends to re-record some of the songs from the albums recorded with Johan (Liiva, erstwhile vocalist). Is that correct?
A: "Yeah."

Q: Are there any dates planned for recording of those songs?
A: "Yeah, we're actually talking about recording them in early 2008. We've talked about doing this for years now. There's a lot of songs that we really like which are featured on those albums, but we can't really play them live as most of our fans discovered us after Angela (Gossow) joined the group. The idea is to release an album, and to be able to play those songs live."

Q: You've been asked to fill in for Ken Owen for upcoming CARCASS shows, so can you tell me about that? How did that come about? Is it Michael who asked you?
A: "Yeah, he asked me to do it. I think one of the reasons Michael asked me is due to the fact he knows me as a drummer, and we obviously rehearse. I have my drums set up in our rehearsal space, and that's where Carcass have been meeting up and rehearsing."

Q: Is it going to be difficult filling in for Ken? Obviously, Ken has health issues which is the reason you're going to be behind the drum-kit. Is it going to be difficult living up to what people remember from those old Carcass shows?
A: "I'm not going to involve too much of my personal flavour, put it that way. I'm going to try to emulate his playing as well as I can."

Slayer Confirmed For Gods Of Metal Festival

Los Angeles thrash metal legends SLAYER have been confirmed for the Gods of Metal festival, set to take place June 27-29, 2008 in Bologna, Italy. The festival billing is now shaping up as follows:

Friday, June 27:

IRON MAIDEN
AVENGED SEVENFOLD

Saturday, June 28:

SLAYER
CARCASS
MESHUGGAH
TESTAMENT
AT THE GATES

Sunday, June 29:

JUDAS PRIEST
YNGWIE MALMSTEEN
MORBID ANGEL
ENSLAVED

National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences members have nominated SLAYER for the band's third Grammy Award. The SLAYER track, "The Final Six", from the group's 2007 limited-edition "Christ Illusion", was nominated in the category of "Best Metal Performance."

"The Final Six", written by Tom Araya and guitarist Jeff Hanneman and produced by Josh Abraham, is a chilling look at an hypothesized end of the world. The song made its debut last July as the "Single of the Week" on MySpace where it has since accumulated some 750,000 plays, an astounding number for a song that received no commercial airplay.

"When I first got the word, I thought someone was playing a joke," mused Araya. "But obviously, we've made an impression on the industry. The people at the upper levels have taken notice of what we've done, and that's awesome."

SLAYER's two previous Grammy nominations were for 2002's "Disciple" from the album "God Hates Us All", and last year's "Eyes of the Insane", for which they took home the Grammy Award.

MORBID ANGEL is presently unsigned, having parted ways with Earache Records following "Heretic"'s release.

Although MORBID ANGEL's upcoming album does not currently have a name, its title will likely begin with the letter "I", in keeping with the band's tradition of titling their albums in alphabetical order beginning with 1989's "Altars of Madness", and continuing through "Heretic".

MORBID ANGEL's current lineup includes Vincent, guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval.

Arch Enemy Guitarist Talks About Carcass Tour

HardCoreSounds.net recently caught up with ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott. The following is an excerpt from the interview:

HCS: When you started playing guitar, what were your main influences? What metal musicians do you admire nowadays?

Michael Amott: "I think I was 12 when I started playing guitar and at that time I was really into extreme metal bands such as METALLICA, SLAYER and MEGADETH. I love fast and heavy music so that´s where I got my influences from. I am not that much into 'happy' metal like I have noticed that you Finns like. What attracted me into metal was anger and hate."

HCS: So what´s your opinion about (Black Crusade tourmates) DRAGONFORCE then?

Michael Amott: "It´s so far away what I would listen to. I won´t make any further comments about that."

HCS: Let´s talk a little bit about CARCASS. You are going to do a small reunion tour this summer by playing atleast in Wacken Open Air and Tuska Open Air in Finland. Where did you get the idea to reunite the band once again?

Michael Amott: "That has been an idea that has been kicking around for quite awhile. It seemed like something nice to do but it really doesn´t fit really well because I am always quite busy with Arch Enemy. It´s going to be really fun to play shows with them again. Looking forward to it."

HCS: What are your personal expectations towards the reunion shows and sharing the stage again with Jeff Walker and Bill Steer?

Michael Amott: "Nothing really, just having a good time. I am anxious to play Carcass songs again. In Arch Enemy I also do a lot of stuff behind the scenes but in Carcass I´ll just play guitar so I guess that reunion tour will be some sort of mental holiday for me."

Carcass Frontman Discusses Reunion

Reactivated British extreme legends CARCASS recently announced that they will perform at next year's installment of the Wacken Open Air festival, set to take place July 31 - August 2, 2008 in Wacken, Germany. The group has also revealed plans to make a number of other festival appearances during 2008, a list which is currently rumored to include Tuska in Finland, Hellfest in France and Evolution in Italy.

In an exclusive interview conducted by e-mail, BLABBERMOUTH.NET got the lowdown on CARCASS' touring plans and other future activities straight from the group's bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker. The question-and-answer session follows here in its entirety:

Q: Mike Amott revealed in a recent interview with Sweden's Close-Up magazine that he got together with you, Bill Steer and ARCH ENEMY drummer Daniel Erlandsson last year to rehearse some of the old CARCASS material with a view towards possibly playing some festival shows in 2007. Who initiated these rehearsal sessions and how did they go, from your point of view?

Jeff: Well, it's no secret that I'd said around the time of Tuska 2006 [annual heavy metal festival held in Helsinki, Finland] that Mike was saying he was gonna try and get Bill over to Halmstad [Sweden] and stick a guitar in his hand — I wished him the best of luck at the time.

Me and Mike had started to come to terms with the idea of playing again as CARCASS. I came back from gigging with BRUJERIA and imagine my suprise when Bill rang me all excited to say he'd been over jamming with Mike and Daniel. Me and Bill went back out there around this time last year and just started going through all the stuff we used to play live.

How did it go? Well, I remember saying to the other three that most people would have killed to have been where I was sat in the rehearsal room, ha ha!

Carcass Reforming For Wacken 2008

Legendary British death metal band, CARCASS, will reunite for next year’s Wacken Open Air festival. Bassist/vocalist, Jeff Walker, issued the following statement on behalf of the band:

“Well, they said it would never happen. In fact I said it would never happen. Then I noticed no one pays attention to what I say anyway and I sounded like an idiot…

“Summer 2008 will be the twentieth anniversary since the release of CARCASS‘ first studio album. It will be fourteen years since we last played live. We’ve decided to exhume the old corpse next Summer at Wacken. The timing is purely coincidental - it’s been a long journey to get to this point where myself, Bill Steer and Mike Amott (ARCH ENEMY) have enough common desire again to make it possible. We’re finally conceding to the demand that seems to be at an all time high and doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon. Any past reasons we may have had for not wanting to do it, or thinking it was impossible, have simply dissipated in the face of overwhelming interest in us performing THOSE riffs for a generation of believers who never had the opportunity back in the day. We could say we’re doing it for ‘the kids’ - but fuck that! We’re doing it ‘cos it will be fun again to play the classic CARCASS tunes!! Of course it would seem inappropriate for us to contemplate to do this without Ken Owen, but I assure you he’ll be there, and we’ll push some sticks in his hands and make him play, plus we’ll have a killer drummer to sit in and play HIS parts.

“Myself, Jeff Walker, on bass and vocals, ‘the semi-legendary’ Bill Steer and Mike Amott on lead guitar and Daniel Erlandsson (ARCH ENEMY), filling in for Ken on drums, look forwards to mutilating your hearing.

“And if we don’t do it? Who else will overshadow the LED ZEPPELIN reunion?

“Ha!

“Prepare to rot and roll.”

Next year’s Wacken Open Air (official website) is set to take place July 31 through August 2, 2008.
