Roxx Records and the Christian Metal Realm recently announced the details on their long in the works tribute album celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Southern California Christian Thrash legends Deliverance.
"Temporary Insanity – A Salute to Deliverance" is set for release this August and hosts a variety of artists paying tribute to the band, some current, some past and even some special reunions all came together to lay down tracks for the disc! Including current and former members of bands such as The Crucified, Vengeance Rising, Deliverance and Hirax just to name a few; and special reunions from Oil and Eternal Decision all coming together just to contribute tracks for this project.
Arttie Parker owner of the Christian Metal Realm says “This CD started out in our online forum well over a year ago when some of the bands that frequent the board wanted to do a few tribute songs to ‘D’, then I started talking with Bill over at Roxx Records about it and it morphed in to a full on tribute CD with tons of artists in the mainstream Thrash and Christian Metal scenes all wanting to contribute to this project and give props to Deliverance as you can easily see by looking at the list of bands and artists we have lined up!”

Thrash metal has grown to become one of the most popular sub-genres in the history of metal. It has it's stars of course such as Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer and it has the band's with more of a large cult following such as Exodus and Testament. But like any other movement, it also has it's forgotten heroes. When researching the original thrash metal scenes, one will inevitably stumble upon a band named Hirax, one of the most dedicated and unique bands in the field.
Like many other thrash metal bands in the 1980s, they were signed to Metal Blade Records, through which they released two studio albums. "Raging Violence" in 1985 and "Hate, Fear And Power" the following year. The second album was a rushed release thanks to pressure from the label and clocked in at just over sixteen minutes, featuring only eight songs. Frontman Katon De Pena left the band not long after, due to internal tensions and what he saw as bad label management, forming the short-lived band Phantasm with original Metallica bassist Ron McGovney and Dark Angel drummer Gene Hoglan. Hirax themselves replaced Katon with former Exodus frontman Paul Baloff, though they decided to call it a day not long after.
The band would reunite with the original lineup in 2000 and released the "El Diablo Negro" EP the same year, however the reunion was not to last as by the next year, Katon De Pena was the only original member left in the band. Since then he has kept Hirax going strong, releasing several EPs and two studio albums, "New Age Of Terror" (2004) and "El Rostro de la Muerte" (2009), as well as building up a strong fan base in South America. Thrash metal veterans Hirax has announced that they will release their brand new studio album, "El Rostro de la Muerte (The Face Of Death)" in August through Black Devil Records. The album will feature ten new tracks along with a bonus track from the bands "Chaos And Brutality" EP.
“The combination of Haddad and Rozen’s recording and production are perfect for the vision that we had for the sound of this album,” said Hirax vocalist Katon W. De Pena. “We worked with Haddad on the last 2 Hirax EPs, Assassins of War and Chaos And Brutality. He has a great understanding of the power and speed of Hirax, and he knows how to bring the best of our talents to the surface. We have a lot of respect for him. Hirax first worked with Michael Rozen back in 2004 on The New Age of Terror album and it’s great to be working with him again. His experience in mixing and production are what we need to complete the mega-epic sound that we are striving for. It’s the first time Hirax has ever brought two of our producers together, but it seemed like the logical thing to do since they both have an ear for detail and a certain work ethic which brings out the best in the band. Musically, it combines everything that Hirax is known for and much, much more! True thrash metal!!”

The Tidal Wave Metal Festival, born from the now defunct "Making Waves Festival," has announced a tentative lineup for the two-days free event. Celebrating it's 11th year of putting on the heaviest, FREE outdoor music festival on the west coast, Tidal Wave showcases the best thrash, doom, grind, punk, old school metal, etc., that the Bay Area, and beyond, has to offer.
The Tidal Wave is free to concert-goers, completely paid for by banner advertising, sponsorship, donations, and volunteers and is truly unlike any other music festival in existence. The free event is like a picnic in the park, with metal. You may bring whatever you want (dogs, food, coolers, cigarettes, mullets etc. are all ok). There will be raffles for merchandise donated from various sponsors and bands all day all day.
Here is the tentative line-up for The Tidal Wave 2008 festival:
Angelo Espino, who has previously played with HIRAX, REVEREND, DISSINTER, UNCLE SLAM, ONCE DEAD, VERMIN and LSN, and many others, has joined OSM recording artists ANGER AS ART.
Commented the band in a statement: "This was a coup for us to get someone of his caliber. We knew that a change was going to happen with Javier [Maruffo]. However, the timetable was moved up very rapidly in March. It came to our attention that Angelo was available and interested, so we made him an offer. Angelo and Dave [Chedrick, drums] played together in what we thought was HIRAX's best lineup — so they have that rhythm section vibe already in place, and it really shows when we play live. We wish Javier the best, and we part as friends and family." More...
The following press release has been issued:
Following last year’s release of HIRAX’s highly acclaimed EP Assassins Of War, the Long Beach thrashers have recorded six new songs with producer John Haddad for their upcoming album, El Rostro de la Muerte. This will be the band’s first full-length since the 2004 release The New Age Of Terror. The album will also include re-recordings of classic Hirax tracks 'Broken Neck' and 'Blind Faith' as well as the bonus track 'Chaos And Brutality' from the European EP released last year.
“Some of the song titles are inspired by the religious fanatics in the United States and the hypocrisy surrounding church and state,” said Hirax vocalist Katon W. De Pena. “There are tracks which deal with morals of mankind, and there is a bit of war influence; naturally, because there is so much of it still going on all over the world. There are a lot of dark subjects on this new album as well, which reflects the overall concept of the music. The title of the album is El Rostro de la Muerte, which in Spanish means The Face of Death. I have no doubt in my mind that this will be our heaviest and most intense record to date!!”
Hirax is in the process of writing of five more songs that will be recorded after their return from an appearance at the Long Live Metal Festival in France on May 10. El Rostro De La Muerte is expected to be released in August 2008 on Black Devil Records and Deep Six Records.
“It has been a great writing process so far, but a lot of hard work,” said De Pena. “Steve, Fabricio and I are very involved in the overall process of compiling and putting the songs together. The guitarists Lance and Glenn have been writing a LOT of riffs for us to choose from. We are only keeping the best and throwing out anything that just does not fit in with what we are trying to create musically. We are being very picky because we want the album to be the best that it can be. “
Coinciding with the full-length release, Hirax will expand the resurging thrash metal brotherhood by collaborating on 3 split 7 inches – Sweden’s F.K.U., Crucifer from Greece and the Malaysian crossover maniacs Sarjan Hassan. The three Hirax tracks will be 'Satan’s Fall', 'Baptized By Fire', and 'Death Militia' respectively. All three 7 inches will be released on Black Devil Records. More...
