American thrash metal veterans Hirax have posted an update regarding their new studio album, "Immortal Legacy," which will be their first release through their new record label, SPV Records.
A message from vocalist/founding member Katon W. De Pena reads as follows: "We record the new album with legendary producer Bill Metoyer. This is our most epic sounding record to date, sonically powerful and over-the-top. 14 new raging thrash metal songs that will make you bang your head!!!"
The new album is expected to hit the shelves on September 23rd in Europe (September 20th in Germany) with a North American release of September 24th to follow.
Legendary U.S. thrash band Hirax has inked a worldwide deal with Steamhammer/SPV. The band is expected to enter the studio in early 2013 with a new album expected in September followed by a world tour. The last studio release from the band was in 2009 with "El Rostro de la Muerte."
Frontman Katon W. De Pena commented on the signing: "We are honored to now be a part of the SPV Records family and we appreciate their total support of our thrash metal music. Together we are going to bring the heavy metal music world one hell of a skull crushing album in 2013".
Steamhammer/SPV's A&R head Olly Hahn added:" It´s an honor to have Katon and Hirax on our label. Through all the years Katon held the flag of metal high and also played places of the earth where nobody would. It´s time for another raging violence!"
Upcoming live dates for the band are as follows:
12/22: US-Los Angeles,CA - Key Club (together with Agent Steel)
2/16: MEX-Mexico City - Circo Volador (together with Malevolant Creation)
Philip Lawvere, the artist behind such classic album covers as Kreator's "Pleasure to Kill" and Celtic Frost's "Emperor's Return," has come out of retirement and will design the as-yet-untitled new Hirax album, which is scheduled for a Spring 2013 release. Visit Philip Lawvere's Facebook page to check out his work at this location.
Lawvere had done stunning illustrations for numerous albums and is best known for a slew of thrash metal offerings released on Noise Records. Hirax frontman Katon W. De Pena commented: "We couldn't be happier to have Philip Lawvere illustrating the cover of our new album. After getting Bill Metoyer to produce it, this is truly the icing on the thrash metal cake!"
In other news, Hirax is pleased to announce that new single "La Boca de la Bestia (The Mouth of the Beast)" is now the most downloaded song from the band in its storied history.
Beefy funny man, Billy Milano once said “Skinheads and bangers and punks stand as one Crossover to a final scene.” This insight he offered on S.O.D.’s 1985 release “Speak English or Die” would serve as a rallying cry for hardcore punks and metal heads to come together. Not only did this song help create a mindset for bringing together two scenes; it also constructed a formula for the two styles to merge. Known simply as metalcore or crossover, the term came to describe how hardcore bands added metal’s solos and heft to their arrangements, while thrash absorbed the speed, attitude and brevity of hardcore to their compositions.
Milano also claimed “It’s not the way you wear your hair, it’s what’s inside of you.” Even though these words ring true twenty-seven years after publication, and so often we see the two lines blurring together, hair styles have pretty much remained the same (minus poodle hair and mullets). Short hair, often bald or spiky, is still relegated to punks, while long hair is a feature of head bangers. Regardless of attitude and opposition to the mainstream, many punks and metal heads prefer to segregate.
After hearing an inspiring hardcore/crossover album from "The Casualties" and attending festivals such as Fun Fun Fun Fest and Chaos in Tejas that mesh metal and hardcore in the last year, I felt the need to research and write an article on the history of this topic. Through the usual resource of the Internet, Ian Christe’s book “Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal” and a first person source, I hope to shed light on this phenomenon. In the following article, we will look at the interchangeable qualities of punk and metal, as well as delving into each style’s social constraints. We will look at the bands that started this movement and analyze how the art form has evolved. Ready yourself for a crash course on punk-thrash crossover movement. More...

Day one of The Goregrowler’s Ball came and went without any hitches. Day two promised even more gore-gurgling delights. This day started earlier than Friday’s 5:30 start time. Originally scheduled for a 1:30 start time, the promoter pushed the start time back to 2:30. Prog death artists, Vex took this early slot, which we unfortunately missed. Comatose Records was on full display, as it was throughout the weekend, with Atrocious Abnormality. Said band played a brutal slab of unmerciful, brutal death metal featuring label head, Steve Green.
Ibex Moon Records, owned by John McEntee of Incantation, also made its presence known on the second day. Cardiac Arrest produced grimy, churning death metal in the vein of Autopsy and Grave. The Chicago act switched between rotten-limb-stiffening slow jams and all-out-blast fests provided by new drummer Nick Gallichio. Adam Scott, Tom Knizner, Dave Holland joined low and mid-range scathing voices to narrate grisly tales from the group’s three recordings. Set highlights include the frantic pace of “Insanity’s Grip,” and the ominous, full-moon-blooming groove of “Affliction of the Beast.”
Fellow Ibex Moon label and former tour mates, Hod took the hell-raising chaos outside. Hod was in fine form, performing its perfected blend of death, thrash, black, speed and all-things-metal (“We’re Hod and we play fucking metal”) style. The Central Texas act showcased material from its sole album, “Serpent.” The said album has been out for two years, so one would expect new material. Locals familiar with Hod knew the band well, so their new songs came without surprise. However, those from out of town delighted in hearing new tracks such as “Den of Wolves.” Look for a new record in 2012. More...
