Official Ozzfest 2005 Dates And Lineup Revealed

It's big. It's bad. And it's back for more. Got a problem with that?

Ozzfest — the king of festivals — triumphantly returns this summer to celebrate its hard-earned 10th anniversary with the staggering line-up of BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN, ROB ZOMBIE, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, SHADOWS FALL and BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. The summer's premier concert festival — which has propelled many of today’s rock bands to superstardom while paying close attention to its discerning fans — will roll out July 15 in Boston and visit 26 cities by the time it reaches West Palm Beach on September 4. The Hot Topic Second Stage will be headlined by ZOMBIE and feature a preview of rock's rising stars, including AS I LAY DYING, MASTODON, THE HAUNTED, IN FLAMES, ARCH ENEMY, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, BURY YOUR DEAD, SOILWORK, TRIVIUM, IT DIES TODAY, A DOZEN FURIES and more.

"I'm most proud of the success of Ozzfest," says founder Sharon Osbourne. "Everyone said it would never happen and 10 years later we are still in business." In fact, 125 bands, 238 shows and over 4 million fans later, the all-day extravaganza of music and deranged merriment is roaring louder than ever. History in the making, 2005 marks the first time metal legends BLACK SABBATH and IRON MAIDEN have toured together and also represents IRON MAIDEN's first Ozzfest appearance.

IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson said, "This summer's MAIDEN touring is based on the recent 'Early Days' DVD and all the songs we do at Ozzfest will be from our first four albums — 'Iron Maiden', 'Killers', 'Number of the Beast' and 'Piece of Mind'. We will be bringing over our full European show, naturally including as special guest Eddie in various appropriate guises!! The stage sets, production and backdrops will recreate aspects of the shows on the tours around those albums — only bigger… much bigger!!! We don’t know if anyone has done anything like this before but we think it’s something the fans will really appreciate both in the choice of songs and in the production values."

Here are the Ozzfest tour dates: More...

Shadows Fall, The Haunted Lined Up For Ozzfest '05

Century Media recording artists Shadows Fall and the Haunted have secured slots at this year's Ozzfest. Shadows Fall are expected to appear on the main stage while the Haunted are said to be in the mix for the smaller second stage, which will apparently feature more non-rotating slots this summer compared to the last couple of years. Other acts believed to have been selected for the 10-year-anniversary edition of Ozzfest are Black Label Society, Rob Zombie, Killswitch Engage and Mudvayne. Iron Maiden are strongly rumored to have nabbed the co-headlining slot alongside Black Sabbath, who will make a series of European live appearances in June/July prior to the Ozzfest U.S. kick-off. Also expected to perform on the main stage is the "Among the Living" lineup of Anthrax, who have yet to officially confirm their "reunion" plans despite having already been announced for four European festival appearances this spring/summer (Holland's Dynamo Open Air on May 7, Sweden's Sweden Rock on June 9-11, Italy's Gods of Metal on June 11-12 and France's Fury Fest on June 24-26).

Last year's Ozzfest was one of the heaviest in the tour's history, featuring Sabbath, a reunited Judas Priest, Slayer, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Dimmu Borgir, Hatebreed and others.

Metal Musicians Comment On Violence In Metal

Imhotep Zine from Norway have issued an extensive report asking a long list of hard rock/metal musicians these two questions: "Can aggressive music led people to kill others?" and "Is there any connection between heavy music and violence / killings / crimes against humanity?". Here are some of the reponses:

Jens Johansson (Stratovarius):

I think the connection is not a useful one to make. This was just one of those freak things that no amount of planning, forethought or "self policing by the industry" could have prevented. I would blame it more on the state of health care (psychiatric health care in particular) in the USA and of course on the gun control laws! But I would not put much blame on those things. It's simply not useful. I also wonder a bit why the US Marine Corps take a schizophrenic guy and teach him how to use a gun. But maybe they need people like that, what the fuck do I know. Such a sad thing what happened. I only met Dimebag very briefly once when we played this Randy Rhoads benefit together in LA many years ago. He seemed a cool guy, surprisingly quiet for playing such aggressive music. :) Everyone I've spoken to who knew him say that he was one of the sweetest people they met. It's so typical somehow. Why don't they ever kill the assholes??? :)

Jonas Björler (The Haunted, ex-At the Gates):

No, I don't think brutal music causes violent behavior. The violence I've seen in pits during metal concerts have been all about 'friendly violent fun'", like EXODUS said. I really don't see a clear-cut connection. But there will always be exceptions to a certain rule, and in the case of Dimebag's killer - that was a really sick & troubled young man who dealt with his frustration & anguish the wrong way.

Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Dark Angel, Death, Old Man's Child, Testament):

These people are VERY misinformed, and, by the looks of their articles, really have it in for heavy metal and anyone who listens to it or plays it. How could anyone seriously lay the blame back on Dime for some psychopath's delusional breakdown? No one came out to blame John Lennon for Mark David Chapman's murder of him, and he was under FBI scrutiny for years! Had he been in a metal band (or merely an avid fan), it would have been, "Oh, he got what was coming to him", and his death could have possibly been made fodder for some of the true haters out there.

Music only becomes an issue when it can be used to enflame a story. When Charles Whitman climbed to that bell tower in Texas and gunned-down dozens of people, no one questioned his musical tastes. Chances are, him being from Texas, the 1960's, ex-military, he was into country/western music. Did that drive him to kill a ton of people, with its discussions of how "I'm gonna take a gun and shoot my wife", or "I shot a man in Reno/ just to watch him die"? Sure it did. Is this this uninformed conjecture on my part? Of course it is. But it sure is easy to do...

Now, some factions of Black Metal seemed to embrace violence against others...that's a subject I don't know what to do about... RIP Dime. You are loved and missed...

Napalm Death, The Haunted Tsunami Benefit CD

All of us have followed the horrible catastrophe that happened December 26th across the Indian ocean when the tsunami hit countries like Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and even Bangladesh, the Maldive Islands, Somalia and Tanzania. We assume that no further words are needed to explain why Napalm Death had the idea to release a charity single to raise money to help the victims of the tsunami. For this very special occasion Napalm Death donated the brandnew track “The Great And The Good” feat. Jello Biafra on guest-vocals from their upcoming album “The Code Is Red… Long Live The Code”. The Haunted picked the song “Smut King” from the digipak-pressing of their acclaimed album “rEVOLVEr” and Heaven Shall Burn added “Strassenkampf” (originally by Die Skeptiker and feat. guitarist Patrick Schleitzer on vocals), the exclusive bonus-track of the Korean pressing of “Antigone”. All bands and Jello Biafra wrote liner-notes for the single.
To collect as much money as possible Napalm Death, The Haunted, Heaven Shall Burn and Century Media decided not to make this a retail-single. The single will be strictly limited to 1.000 hand-numbered copies and sold only on the two shows in January, some copies might be sold directly by the bands.

Napalm Death shows:
Jan. 22 (D) Bochum – Matrix w/ Heaven Shall Burn, Maroon, Do or Die and End of Days
Jan. 24 (UK) London – Underworld w/ Mistress, Cephalic Carnage

Number 1-10 will be signed by all three bands and auctioned on Ebay. All proceeds of the single (approximately EUR 5,00 with a sales-price of EUR 6,00) will be collected and donated to the Red Cross after the single is sold out.

Dolving Doesn't Rule Out At The Gates Reunion

THE HAUNTED frontman Peter Dolving recently spoke to the Fourteen G E-zine about the group's new album, "rEVOLVEr", the music business and the possibility of an AT THE GATES reunion (the much-missed pre-THE HAUNTED outfit that is considered to be among Sweden's most influential extreme metal acts). A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:

Fourteen G: When do you think an AT THE GATES reunion will occur?

Peter Dolving: "I think it's not impossible, they were talking about doing something like a one show [gig] in London but it still needs to be worked out. I think the initiative has to come from outside; someone else has to take the initiative for them. It would take a sound financial situation to make it whole!

Fourteen G: Coming from thee latest hotbed of death metal, how is the scene evolving in Sweden?

Peter Dolving: "In a way, it's a really hard question. Musically I think it's getting a lot more technical and for a while there. There were a lot of bands that were being inspired by bands like AT THE GATES and THE HAUNTED and a lot of them were going in that direction of sound or looking for that same kind of energy. But I think finally that it's occurring to a lot of those kids that it's more about trying to find your own expression, you know. The originality level is really going up actually. Getting more weird stuff, I don't know if that's directly better. In the long run, yeah, it's better because it will spur people to do something they might not have done before."

The Haunted To Headline Scandinavian Tour

After their extraordinarily successful US tour with Damageplan (our sincere condolences to all relatives of the victims of the tragic incident – R.I.P., Dimebag) and labelmates Shadows Fall, the Swedish five-piece will now start to devastate Europe.

On January 26th 2005 The Haunted will head out for the “Close Up Made Us Do It Tour” as headlining act all over Scandinavia together with supports Totalt Jävla Mörker & Insision. The last show of this leg will take place in Arhus (DK) on February 13th. Afterwards the guys have a few days off to hang out at home before they fly to the UK in order to tear down the walls of the English clubs. The headlining tour will start February 24th and run up to March 7th with support acts Martyr AD & Dead To Fall. More European tourdates will be announced soon.

Here is Frontman Peter Dolving’s comment about the activities of the past months:

It’s been an insane, great, weird and sad year. We’ve received such a strong response to "rEVOLVEr" as we never have before and it feels - as you can probably imagine - well, like a lot of everything.

The spring of 2004 we did a tour in the UK with our brothers in Funeral For A Friend, playing for an audience completely new to us. I did that whole tour with four fractured ribs and it hurt like hell every night but we still had a good time. Seeing teenage girls screaming in the first row and watching as 2000 Emo-kids formed circle-pits as we played in Glasgow was amazing.

The six week US tour with Shadows Fall and Damageplan ended on a sour note with the slaying of Dimebag Darrell, but it was heavy fucking package, every show escalating the intensity as we all inspired each other to outdo ourselves, setting a new mark every night.

We intend to honour Dimebag’s memory by fucking shit up more ferociously than ever before and we look forward to seeing our fans throughout the UK – it’s a hard love thing, you know what I mean... If there was ever a mark for what we can achieve as a band - Well, this time we push the limits forward. See you there.

Commented guitarist Michael Amott: "This is shaping up to be one hell of a night! This is THE dream line up of bands for any fan of the 'Swedish sound!' We can't promise that the city of London will still be there after this Swedish Apocalypse! If the show doesn't do the job, the party afterwards will! What a great way to end the year!"

The Haunted's Peter Dolving Talks About Shooting

THE HAUNTED's frontman Peter Dolving rants about Dimebag Darrell and all sorts of tangentially related stuff. THE HAUNTED were touring with SHADOWS FALL and DAMAGEPLAN when the shooting happened.

"I guess I have to puke these last couple of weeks out of me. Six-seven weeks on tour sure as fuck leave their tracks even though it feels as if it´s been a really good one.

First off the whole fucking ordeal with the shooting; I don´t know what to say. A couple of years ago I got a similar phonecallas the one I got yesterday. It was my little sis that time. She miracuosly survived the five slugs her ex shot her with at point blank range. More...

Metalunderground's "Best Metal Album of The Year"

This year, Metalunderground.com is figuratively handing out an award of its own for "Best Metal Album of The Year." Everyone else hands out "best of year" awards or lists, so why shouldn't we? Afterall, the staff here at metalunderground.com has very diverse tastes, and we know our metal. So this year I asked each of our writers to pick their top 5 albums of 2004 and rank them form 1 to 5. What I saw was a lot of different opinions, but among the differences, two albums rose to the top.

Swedish thrash titans The Haunted will be the featured guests on MTV2’s Headbangers Ball this Saturday, Dec. 4th. The group are currently wrapping up the Devastation Across The Nation Tour alongside Damageplan and Shadows Fall; look for them to make their U.S. return in the spring. Their new video “All Against All” was shot by acclaimed director Roger Johansson (In Flames, Soilwork), expect a new video for the track “99” to surface early next year.

Now four albums into the band’s stellar career, The Haunted have returned with their most savage assault yet, proving that there truly is no compromise. Their new disc, "rEVOLVEr," featuring the long anticipated return of original vocalist Peter Dolving, is also the group’s most dynamic offering to date. The innovators of Swedish thrash metal have returned, and they are ready to lay waste to anything that stands in their way.
