By the time the nineties reared its head, metal music had evolved significantly from the blooming genre it was twenty years previously. It had been commercialised as glam metal, deified by thrash metal and taken to the extreme by the emerging death and black metal sub genres. But not everyone had shrugged off or forgotten about the roots of metal, which were firmly in the blues. There was one band who decided to put the blues back into metal and hard rock, who went by the suitably striking name of, Thunder.
The origins of the band date well back to 1975, when guitarist Luke Morley and singer Danny Bowes met at college and formed a band called Nuthin' Fancy, who released an independent single, "Looking For a Good Time," before changing their name to Terraplane. It was after adopting this new moniker that they found some relative success, releasing two albums and performing at the 1982 Reading festival. However, in time, 1989 to be exact, the band decided to rename themselves to their familiar alias, Thunder and in that same year, inked a record deal with EMI after impressing with a demo audtion. British hard rockers Thunder has announced that they will be performing at the British leg of the Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth this year. In addition, this will be the bands last ever show. Frontman Danny Bowes states:
"Our final six months have been incredible, with sell-out shows and brilliant festival appearances all over," explained singer Danny Bowes. "It's somehow quite fitting that we’ll play our last show in the UK, and having gone there as kids to see the (ROLLING) STONES and LED ZEPPELIN, to do it at Knebworth will be a real thrill. Bring it on!"
British rock legends Thunder has posted the following message online:
"As we enter Thunder's 20th anniversary year, we've found ourselves becoming increasingly busy with our various activities outside of the band, and we've come to the conclusion that there are simply not enough hours in the day to fit it all in. Having discussed it at length, we've decided that this is a fitting time for us to hitch up our wagons and ride into the sunset. We've therefore decided to give you advance notice that we intend to cease all recording and touring activity, as of the summer of 2009.
"In practical terms, this means that we will cease to be a band as of the summer, but until then it will be more or less business as usual. The 2008 Xmas Show CDs will be released as promised, and the previously announced shows in Europe (February) and Japan (April) will go ahead as planned. We will use these shows, as well as any festival slots we can secure, to make the most of the time left, and say our goodbyes to you.
"With that in mind, despite only touring a couple of months ago, we couldn't make our exit without saying goodbye to UK fans, so we've arranged a final UK tour, which will take place in early July. The dates are as follows:- More...
Harry James, drummer of legendary British hard rock band Thunder has had to pull out of the bands forthcoming tour of the United Kingdom. He is currently suffering from kidney stones and was admitted to the hospital earlier this week. His replacement on the tour will be drummer John Tonks.
U.K. rock legends Thunder has announced that their forthcoming new album will be entitled "Bang!" and contains the following tracklisting:
"On The Radio"
"Watching Over You"
"Turn Left At California"
A message from the bands webmaster reads as follows:
"The record was recorded at Walton Castle in Clevedon, near Bristol, in the sunny South West of England, at various times during the spring of this year. The place is not a studio as such, but the band thought the 2 foot thick stone walls and large selection of rooms and turrets would work brilliantly, so they moved all their recording kit, all the equipment, tons of cables and pipes, and their swimming trunks down to the place, and guess what? They were right! As he who controls all things, I have heard it, and it sounds fab! All songs were written by Luke, except 'Watching Over You' (which he wrote with Andy Taylor Jr and Mike Keen). As is tradition, I'll be uploading a short audio clip each week, between now and the release date. Click here for the first one. Spread the word babies, the campaign begins NOW! You know what you have to do, and please don't let me down."
UK rockers THUNDER are set to appear alongside a host of acts and rock stars at the Childline Rocks charity show at Indigo2 in London, UK on March 13th, 2008. Hosted by radio legend Bob Harris, the bill also includes ROGER DALTREY, LULU, IAN PAICE, GLENN HUGHES, THE ZOMBIES, FISH, MARILLION, RUSS BALLARD, BRIAN BENNETT and more.
Thunder will perform a short set of their own music, and will form the backbone of the all star band in the second half of the show.
The band commented: "This will be a very special event, and the band don't want the ticket price to stop you being there, so a word has been had, and we've been given 100 (only 100) downstairs tickets to sell. This is a unique occasion, so a similarly unique ticketing situation has been decided upon...
You decide how much you pay for your ticket (subject to minimum pricing, this is a charity event after all). Yes, you read it right. You decide.
No booking fee, no postage, you just choose the price you want to pay (£25, £30 or £35), then whip out your plastic.
Click here for ticket info and options, but remember all the tickets are in the same place in the venue (downstairs - standing), you're just deciding how much you want to donate to ChildLine in order to attend.
It's going to be a great night, but if you want to go, please don't hang about, our tickets are on sale now, but this offer ends when the 100 tickets are gone, or at 9pm on the 12th of March, whichever is the sooner."

The webmaster for UK rockers THUNDER has issued the following update:
"The band asked me to say a big thank you to all of you who attended the recent UK tour. It was a resounding success, selling more tickets than last year's tour, despite being three shows less. It would appear that the band are becoming really rather popular again, and we have you guys to thank for that, so once again, thanks for spreading the word. Luke (Morley - guitar) is making a steady recovery after his recent illness. Playing shows when you feel unwell is never easy, but those who were there at Manchester, London and Sheffield will no doubt testify to his professionalism."
"Xmas Show Update: If you haven't got your ticket for the Xmas Knees up at Rock City on the 19th, please don't leave it too long, they are going fast. That said, we've been told here and there that some people are having difficulty in obtaining tickets. We've been told by the venue that the show is not sold out, so there should be no reason for difficulty. As usual all and any information you can give us will help us improve the situation, so if you're having trouble please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with as much detail as you can give." British rockers THUNDER have issued the following update:
"We know some of you fans like to wait until the last minute to buy tickets, so we thought we'd warn you that the UK shows are selling extremely well - so well that it looks as though several of the shows may well sell out any moment now. If you are one of the ones that haven't got around to getting your tickets yet, we suggest you do it....NOW! You really don't want to miss out do you? Of course not!"
"The Xmas show is selling really well as well - don't forget that the ticket price includes the CD of the highlights from the show! (bargain!). As usual with the Xmas Gigs, the show is in two parts (part one is sit down and calm(ish) and part two a is full on Thunder show - with a twist). Both sets feature special guests, songs old and new and some covers too. The dodgy inflatables and Xmas decos are shaping up to be even dodgier this year (!). The word from the top at Thunder Towers is that there will be a request that everyone wears a suitably iffy Xmas hat. You simply HAVE to be there! More when I have it." More...
Britain's THUNDER have posted this message on their official website:
"Just by way of a newsflash, the new 'Six Of One' EP is selling like the proverbial hotcakes, and reaction to both the new and live songs is universally fab. As previously mentioned here in these very pages, it's a limited edition release, and once they're gone they're gone, so if you haven't ordered your copy already, you're seriously risking missing out. Don't say you weren't warned...
Just to keep you abreast of the situation, the plans for releases are now formulated for the short and medium term, and I can reveal that there will be not one, but two further EPs (yes that's two). The idea is that the second one will be released in early 08, with similar content and packaging format to Six Of One (i.e. three new + three live songs), with the third making its entrance bundled with the next full-blown studio LP (projected September '08). The third one will be slightly different in terms of audio content and the packaging will house all three EPs, so they'll all fit together in a fab three-CD type package. More than that I am forbidden from saying right now, but it's really exciting around here..."
British rockers THUNDER check in with the following news:
"Word has reached us here at Thunder Towers that there is to be a postal strike in the UK this Thursday lasting through to next Wednesday.
This is of course extremely un-fab for our new EP release, but all is not lost as stock has arrived a day or two earlier than expected. The lovely peeps at Townsend Records are going to go all out to send out as many orders as they can tomorrow (Tuesday the 2nd), so you lovely peeps who bought it can get it before the strike kicks in.
All those of you who have dillied and dallied and not ordered it before today (shame on you) will of course have to wait until after the strike ends next week. Let's hear a huge "hurrah" for Townsend Records..."
The above mentioned EP, entitled Six Of One (artwork pictured), features the following tracklisting: 'Chain Reaction', 'Yesterday's News', 'Midlife Crisis', 'Dirty Dream' (Live), 'What A Beautiful Day' (Live), 'A Million Faces' (Live).
