Background

This melodic death metal band, formed by former Carcass’ guitarist, Michael Amott, started out with Johan Liiva on vocals, but then replaced him with Angela Gossow. Though a female replaced him, the band still has the same death metal vocal style. Gossow, who has only been with the band on the past two albums, has been able to create a strong presence in the band.

Arch Enemy Posts Second Track-By-Track Video

Arch Enemy's new album "War Eternal" (reviewed here) will be unleashed next week on June 10th in North America.

For a preview of "War Eternal," check out part 2 of the track-by-track video with Michael Amott (guitar) and Alissa White-Gluz (vocals) below. Part 1 can also be seen at this location.

Arch Enemy is currently on the road in Europe, having already completed 10 shows with new front-woman, Alissa White-Gluz. At one of the first shows, Alissa broke her riser into pieces and consequently broke a rib in the fall.

She explained in an online posting: "Anyone at that show who saw me body slam through the fucking riser could imagine there would be some damage. But I'm a stubborn fuck and I waited a few shows before going to get x-rays, ultrasounds and blood tests. The damage to my head, arms and legs is just bad bruising, there is no apparent organ damage and no internal bleeding. Unfortunately, there is a compound break on one rib and severe bruising around several others. Good news is that the pieces of the rib are well aligned to heal back in place! The doctor forbade me to continue playing shows... But cancelling shows would hurt way worse." More...

Arch Enemy Posts Track-By-Track Video

Arch Enemy continues the run of Century Media artists supporting Decibel Magazine with an exclusive flexi disc featuring two cover tracks, Moderat Likvidation's "Nitad" and Anti Cimex's "When The Innocent Die."

Michael Amott (guitar) comments: "When approached about doing the Decibel Magazine flexi, I immediately knew I wanted to pay tribute to some of my earliest influences in the 80's Swedish punk scene! 'Nitad' and 'When The Innocent Die' were recorded in Arch Enemy's rehearsal space and the result is abrasive and extreme, punk as fuck!"

"Nitad" and "When The Innocent Die" were recorded during the "War Eternal" studio session. For a preview of Arch Enemy's upcoming album (reviewed here), be sure to check out part 1 of the track-by-track video series below.

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 16

It's a review-o-rama this week on the Metalunderground.com Official Podcast! Your co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) treat you to a whirlwind of reactions to three very different new metal releases - but not before Kevin reminds you of our ticket giveaway for DevilDriver at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, June 18th. Interested Florida residents should tune in for details.

First order of review business: the self-titled debut of eclectic supergroup Killer Be Killed, featuring Max Cavalera (Soulfly), Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), and Dave Elitch (ex-The Mars Volta). This review is mainly Kevin's bag, with a few cents from Mike on some of the distressing "metal hipster" comments on YouTube.

Next, Mike takes over to rave about Arch Enemy's hotly anticipated tenth studio album "War Eternal," the first to feature new guitarist Nick Cordle (ex-Arsis) of Charlottesville, Virginia fame (Mike's proud hometown) and vocalist Alissa White-Gluz (ex-The Agonist) of Montreal, Quebec. As far as Mike is concerned, this is some of the band's strongest material since the classic "Wages Of Sin" [2001] and is a must-buy release of 2014.

Finally, with heavy hearts, Kevin and Mike tackle the unpleasant burden of dissecting the new Mushroomhead album "The Righteous & The Butterfly," which both confirmed fans sadly agree constitutes the band's weakest material to date - a major letdown after a four-year wait and the hyped return of beloved vocalist Jason "J-Mann" Popson. However, they do their best to look on the bright side, though it is admittedly a struggle.

Tune in here, enjoy, and don't hesitate to offer us your feedback.

Arch Enemy Posts New Lyric Video

After recently launching a video for their new album's title track, the metal icons in Arch Enemy are now ready to unleash a second single from upcoming 9th full-length, "War Eternal," which is due out worldwide via Century Media Records (Trooper Entertainment in Japan) on June 9th in Europe and June 10th in North America.

Check out a lyric video for "As The Pages Burn" below, courtesy of Loudwire.com. Chief song-writer and band leader Michael Amott comments:

"'As The Pages Burn' almost goes back to the style of writing that I had in the late 90's. It's very old school Arch Enemy with an almost Slayer-vibe in the intro/verse and a huge melodic chorus. A bit like 'The Immortal' and other AE classics of that time. The middle section is very classical music inspired - a twin guitar part that is a lot fun to play. Alissa wrote the lyrics for the song. This song is an example of what I love about collaborating-- in the songwriting, I'm giving her the instrumental, and she comes from a different background, and the two different approaches merge together to form a very interesting result that blew my mind. It's one of my favorite tracks on the album."

Front-woman Alissa White-Gluz (who stepped in after the departure of Angela Gossow) adds: "'As The Pages Burn' is also one of my favorite songs. I think it's going to be a very fun song to perform live. I really like fast-paced, energetic songs. A lot of the lyrics on the album are coming straight from my brain during sleepless nights. I often wake up in the middle of the night from horrible nightmares and just start writing songs. For whatever reason, I like the lyrics that I get that way, they feel real and uncensored. This song is one that I wrote at 4am in the dark, half asleep. In the morning I woke up and thought, 'This is cool, I'm going to use this, and I know just the music to put it to'. The musical dynamics in the song are very satisfying to sing to as well. I hope you like it!" More...

Kreator To Tour With Arch Enemy, Sodom & Vader

Kreator announced a new headline European tour with Arch Enemy, Sodom and Vader in support. The tour will begin on December 4th in Tilburg, Netherlands. The press release reads:

"Following the release of last year’s highly acclaimed and critically hailed live DVD/Blu-ray "Dying Alive," German thrash metal giants Kreator now announces a tour for November/December 2014, leading the true "hordes of chaos" throughout Europe as headliners, and with them a real high class selection of bands.

"Joining Kreator for the upcoming live shenanigans are Polish label mates Vader, Swedish death metal masters Arch Enemy and German thrash veterans Sodom.

"Frontman and icon Mille Petrozza comments: 'A lot of our European fans voiced their discontent over the fact that the band hardly does European club tours – apart from our festival shows. In 2013 we were mainly busy playing for our fans overseas. We want to change this now. In time for the reissues of 'Endless Pain,' 'Pleasure To Kill' and 'Extreme Aggression' in all kinds of formats – finally on vinyl again too - we'll end the 'Phantom Antichrist' tour cycle in Europe with a massive string of shows. This will be your last chance to see Kreator live in clubs for quite a while, because we'll be busy working on a new album in 2015 and only play carefully selected shows. Right now we're working on a new multimedia stage show and we'll also have a bunch of surprises in the setlist. Our friends of Arch Enemy are part of the trek to present their new album 'War Eternal,' and so will Vader and our old companions Sodom. This tour will be KILLER!!!“

Arch Enemy Reveals Album Artwork, Track Listing

Extreme metal icons Arch Enemy recently parted ways with Angela Gossow and recruited new front woman Alissa White-Gluz.

The band will unleash 9th studio album, "War Eternal," worldwide via Century Media Records (Trooper Entertainment in Japan) on June 9th in Europe and June 10th in North America.

The artwork for the album was created by Costin Chioreanu and can be seen below. Chief song-writer, guitarist and band leader Michael Amott comments:

"I was looking for a hand-drawn feel with a unique atmosphere, something that would complement the music that we've been working so hard on these last couple of years. In the end my choice fell upon Romanian artist Chioreanu Costin, who's work I've admired for some time. Costin really grasped my vision for the artwork and layout, he's delivered some of the coolest artwork elements we've ever had with ARCH ENEMY!"

"War Eternal" was recorded in various studios during winter 2013/2014 and produced by the band with Jens Bogren, mixing and mastering the album at Fascination Street Studio. The track listing is as follows: More...

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 8

It's been a juicy week of controversial metal news, and your hosts on Metalunderground.com's Official Podcast couldn't wait to fry a couple of the biggest fish for your listening enjoyment.

Co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) gets right down to business with a detailed review of "Lost Forever // Lost Together," the anticipated sixth studio album from Brighton, England's "post-metalcore" heroes Architects.

Next, Kevin and co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) set their sights on the band that's delighted and enraged metal fans the world over - but without whom none of us seem able to live - Metallica. The band recently performed a lengthy new number dubbed "The Lords Of Summer," of which bootlegged footage soon surfaced. Rather than lobbing the lawsuits of yore, Metallica graciously responded by releasing a "Garage Demo" cut of the tune, which your hosts examine in as fair and balanced an approach as possible.

Finally, the bombshell of the week: Arch Enemy's two-punch announcement that longtime frontwoman Angela Gossow had stepped down from the microphone and that Alissa White-Gluz (formerly of The Agonist) had replaced her. Kevin and Mike hash out the potential implications of this change and what it means to them, all the while marveling at just how well this secret was kept under wraps until an official music video was ready for release.

Whether this development reinforces or diminishes Mike's recent OpEd on sexist cynicism in metal, "From Dicks To Chicks," we'll leave up to you. Regardless, take a listen here, relax, enjoy, and offer us your feedback.

Angela Gossow Steps Down From Arch Enemy

In early June 2014, Arch Enemy will unleash 9th studio album, "War Eternal," worldwide via Century Media Records and Trooper Entertainment in Japan. In what seems like but apparently is not an early April Fools joke, Century Media records has issued the following statement about the band now replacing front woman Angela Gossow:

"With this upcoming release, the band will introduce a new member to their ranks: Alissa White-Gluz, former vocalist of Canadian extreme metallers The Agonist. Angela Gossow, who joined Arch Enemy in 2000 and made her debut on the now classic Wages Of Sin (2001), will be stepping down as front-woman and focusing on management, while Alissa takes her place."

Angela Gossow comments: "Dear ARCH ENEMY fans, this is not easy to tell you...I have decided to step down from being ARCH ENEMY's voice of anger. After 13 years of pure fucking metal, 6 studio albums and countless tours through five continents, I feel the need to enter a different phase in my life, be with my family and pursue other interests. I will however remain business manager for ARCH ENEMY, and I will continue to develop my artist management roster.

"I am staying true to my heavy metal roots, just leaving the spotlight so to speak. I am passing the torch to the super talented Alissa White-Gluz, whom I've known as a dear friend and a superb vocalist for many years. I always thought she deserved a chance to shine - and now she's getting it. Just like I got that chance back in 2001.

"I want to thank all ARCH ENEMY fans, our labels Century Media (worldwide) and Trooper Entertainment (Japan), our dedicated road crew, and in particular Michael, Daniel and Sharlee for their love and support throughout all these years. It's been one hell of a ride! We conquered every situation, made it through thick & thin together in the most exciting and rewarding time of my life. Thank you all for being there with me on stage, in front of the stage, and backstage. You have touched my heart, and I hope I was able to give something back to you. I am grateful for the wonderful memories - I will cherish them forever!

"I am looking forward to the next decade of ARCH ENEMY madness! Right now I am listening through rough mixes of the new studio album and I am blown away! 2014 will see a renewed ARCH ENEMY at the top of their game. I am proud to be part of this ARCH ENEMY chapter, albeit in a different way - revving up the engines behind the scenes. I hope to see you in front of the stage; I will join you there this time. Let the killing begin, once again!" More...
