Thin Lizzy Stops Phil Lynott Movie Being Made

Nightwatcher's House Of Rock is reporting:

A Hollywood movie based on the life of late THIN LIZZY frontman/bassist Phil Lynott has been shelved - after surviving band members accused filmmakers of sensationalizing the star's drug abuse.

Lynott died of heart failure and pneumonia on January 4, 1986 at the age of 36, after years of alcohol and drug abuse.

A biopic, starring CSI actor Gary Dourdan in the lead role, was set to be shot - but the project has now been halted after Thin Lizzy's remaining members expressed their concerns.

And guitarist Scott Gorham insisted the movie's directors will not win their approval until the script is completely rewritten. More...

Rock Heavyweights Jam Out At The Roxy

Billboard.com reports: A cast of rock heavyweights crammed the Roxy stage in Hollywood Thursday night (May 1) for a jam session that found the likes of Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath and Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses) on stage with the likes of Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols and Alice In Chains' Jerry Cantrell.

All came together for the first of five Thursday-night gigs in May featuring Navarro and Sorum's occasional side project, Camp Freddy, which also features guitarist/vocalist Billy Morrison, bassist Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction, Alanis Morissette) and singers McGrath and Donovan Leitch, son of folk singer Donovan.

The Roxy is known for holding occasional jam sessions with top-shelf names, and this collective opened its Roxy stand by wowing the crowd with covers of songs by Thin Lizzy ("Jailbreak"), Oasis ("Rock and Roll Star"), Killing Joke ("Eighties"), Blur ("Song 2") and David Bowie ("Suffragette City").

Thin Lizzy Guitarist Comments On Tour

The following story is courtesy of Mylespaul.com:

THIN LIZZY guitarist Scott Gorham is speaking of fallen friends. "We play as if he's never gone away. Every night on stage, we introduce him as though he's still here - and he still gets the biggest cheer of the night. So the bastard is still overshadowing me."

A good-natured guffaw follows down the phone. He is, of course, talking about Lizzy's former front man, bass player and vocalist Phil Lynott, the charismatic black Irishman who died at just 36 after fighting a losing battle against hard drugs abuse 21 years ago.

Lynott's legend lives on in spirit - but, in reality, so does the band, and mighty fine they are, too, as anyone who witnessed the wild scenes the last time the reformed Lizzy played Liverpool University a couple of years ago will concur.

They're back again next week and Gorham, speaking midway through their current British tour, is confident that it'll be every bit as good - if not better. And, despite being the only member of the band remaining in the line-up from their classic Jailbreak days of the mid-70s, he is adamant that this is still the real deal and no cash-in con job.

"It re-started with just seven shows in Japan in 1994 and then there were all these world tours which followed and we wondered what the hell happened," says the Santa Monica-born axeman who has lived in London for 23 years, but still has a Californian drawl that's as long and lazy as ever. "But there was nothing premeditated or grab-a-buck about it: the whole thing snowballed and we've been rolling with it ever since."

Thin Lizzy Guitarist Speaks Out

ThisIsNottingham.co.uk has issued the following report:

For many, when Phil Lynott died 21 years ago aged just 36 THIN LIZZY died with him. Particularly as he'd dissolved the band three years earlier. For five years following his death, the band did indeed cease to be but 1991 saw the start of several reunion projects associated with former members of the band.

These were often one-off shows to celebrate Lynott's legacy, but then in 1996 guitarist Scott Gorham received a call from another former member John Sykes.

"He'd been touring Japan and said he'd included three Lizzy songs in the set - and the crowd went wild," he says.

"I was amazed. I assumed that people would forget us. He suggested getting together to do some dates over there.

"I wondered who would sing but he said that he would. And when I heard his CDs I was blown away. I called Brian (Downey, Thin Lizzy drummer), he was up for it and things just took off.

"We just did the Japan tour, but the fan club got in touch and some of the fans were quite angry, asking "Why not play for us?" The truth is, we were worried about offending people. In the end, we did five UK shows and five in Europe... then people in the US were getting in touch. By 1999, we were playing pretty regularly and decided to carry on."

The current incarnation of Thin Lizzy features only Gorham from the 'classic' Lizzy line-up but he's not worried about that.

"I'm ok with it because of the people I have on stage with me. The drums just blow me away, the bass is amazing. Everywhere I look, I feel inspired."

Helloween Bassist To Do Hard Rock Album

Frontiers Records will release the debut album from Markus Grosskopf's (HELLOWEEN) BASSINVADERS, entitled "Hellbassbeaters", on January 25, 2008.

BASSINVADERS was a creation of Markus' while sitting in a bar and enjoying a few drinks. It was there that he got inspired to produce a heavy rock record without any guitars at all. He presented this concept in early 2007 to Frontiers Records, which was intrigued by the idea and gave it a go.

According to a press release, "Hellbassbeaters" contains all the basic elements of a heavy rock record "and so much more. You got the strong vocals, rhythmic bass, intoxicating drums and even bass and twin bass solo parts. What you hear is what you get: 100% genuine heavy rock record with absolutely no discordant guitar note on it at all." To guarantee a great variety of different influences, Markus invited some well-known singing bass players from the German metal scene to join the band, including DESTRUCTION's Schmier, SODOM's frontman Tom Angelripper and RAGE's Peavy. He also managed to get a few of his bass heroes to lay down solos on some of the tracks, including Billy Sheehan, Rudy Sarzo and DD Verni.

Guest musicians include:

Lee Rocker (STRAY CATS)
Dirk Schlächter (GAMMA RAY)
Stig Pedersen (D.A.D)
Nibbs (SAXON)
Tobias Exxel (EDGUY)
Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69)

Therion Post New Cover Songs Online

Swedish Symphonic metallers THERION have posted cover versions of METALLICA's "Fight Fire With Fire", JUDAS PRIEST's "Green Manalishi" and THIN LIZZY's "Southbound". Links and notes from frontman Christofer Johnsson can be found below:

"Fight Fire With Fire"- "Thought we're getting too old to grind, eh? We tuned down the guitars, raised the tempo and kicked some serious ass in the studio. The vocals are done by me in the chorus and by Anders (the bald guy) in the verses. We used to play this song in 1987 when we where called Blitzkrieg. Recorded and mixed at our own studio Modern Art."

"Green Manalishi"- "This is a cover of their cover on Fleetwood Mac. One of their best songs that I used to listen to a lot when I was young. We tried to do it close to how their original version sounded on the Hell Bent For Leather" album (it later appeared in various live versions on Single and Maxi B-sides and the Unleashed In The East live album). As we made a cover on their cover, it's no point in experimenting with our version, as then it would not be a Judas Priest cover, rather a Fleetwood Mac cover. Recorded and mixed at our own studio Modern Art."

"Southbound"- "Here we tried to make everything as different from the Therion way as we could. It sounds like a sup-pop band from the 80's or something. We used Sarah to sing here, but let her use the "normal" voice (not the opera voice). No one would ever guess that this is Therion playing if they didn't know it and that's one of the ideas behind this version. It's fun to try odd things once in a while."

Head here to check out other cover songs by Therion.
