Background

International music critics and rock gourmets agree: King’s X is among the most unusual acts in the history of rock music. Progressive Nation To Become A Cruise Festival

Progressive Nation is hitting the high seas in 2014! The inaugural sailing will occur on February 18th - 22nd 2014 on the luxurious Norwegian Pearl heading from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay and Freeport, Bahamas. The lineup includes:

Transatlantic, Portnoy Sheehan Macalpine Sherinian, Jon Anderson, Adrian Belew's Power Trio, Devin Townsend, King's X, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside, Animals As Leaders, The Safety Fire, Tony Harnell & Bumblefoot, Bigelf, Beardfish, The Dear Hunter, Haken, Jolly And Next To None

Progressive Nation founder Mike Portnoy elaborates:

"In 2008 & 2009, I created a touring package called 'Progressive Nation' and with Dream Theater headlining, we did three full tours (two in North America and one in Europe) that showcased a variety of bands that embraced the spirit and musicality of progressive music.

"Well after a 5 year hiatus, I have decided to resurrect Progressive Nation and this time we are taking it to the seas! But rather than a 4 band bill like previous Progressive Nation tours, we have expanded the bill to OVER A DOZEN of today's greatest progressive bands, musicians and artists! (and there may be one or two more still to be confirmed)

"Myself and my former DT bandmate Derek Sherinian have teamed up with Sixthman (who have done incredibly successful cruises with Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the annual Kiss Cruise to name a few) as well as our friends at InsideOut Music and look forward to a very successful inaugural launch of Progressive Nation at Sea Feb 18th thru 22nd 2014. Sunday Old School: King's X

Kings-XMost bands come together with the idea of making music, but a select few combine in such a way that they make magic. That is the case with America's ultimate power trio defined King's X, although at the time these three musicians were not aware of the impact that their collaboration would have on the metal and rock community.

The time was 1979 and the place was Evangel College in Missouri. Jerry Gaskill, enrolled in the institute for a degree in Biblical studies, met Doug (dUg) Pinnick there. Jerry was from New Jersey and Doug came down from Chicago to work with a project that Greg Volz from Petra had assembled. DUg was from a religious, Baptist background himself and had been involved in several bands in Illinois along with promoting the Christian music scene in Florida. (It was during this time in Florida that one of dUg's friends got into a car wreck, collected a settlement and bought dUg his first 'official' bass guitar). When the Petra project folded, band member Phil Keaggy invited the both of them to join his new band. More...

Give Forward Campaign Started For Jerry Gaskill

Ed Frost has organized a Give Forward page to help raise money for King's X drummer Jerry Gaskill and his wife Julie. New Jersey native Jerry, who lives in Seaside Heights, suffered damages to his home during Hurricane Sandy. He and his wife are now displaced, in a cruel twist of fate after he had suffered a heart attack in February. Head over to that Give Forward page to learn more. Ed and Michelle Frost wrote this on the page:

The friends and fans of Jerry Gaskill of King's X and solo success, are uniting to to raise money to help with the devastating losses he and his wife Julie suffered during Hurricane Sandy. Jerry and Julie lost almost every material possession they owned and are displaced from their home.

I spoke with Jerry and he and Julie are ok, and very optimistic of the future, despite losing every material possession to this dreadful storm. It's been one helluva journey for him this year-cheating death, marrying his soul mate, a successful tour with Kansas, the announcement of a new solo project kicking off next month, and now this....

If you know Jerry, you already know that is it not in his DNA to ask for help....per Jerry's words "It's gonna be Alright"....... For me, Jerry has helped me in so many different way that past 3 years, that there is no real way that I could repay him. I'm going to do what I can, and hope you will join in.
If you would like to help as well, my wife and I will match the first $1,000 that can be raised. Any gift you can give will be treated as a gift, and is not tax deductible.

Accept Announces First Leg of North American Tour

After debuting their new line up to a sold-out audience in New York this past May and then traveling to Europe for shows in 16 different countries in 80 days (including two shows opening for AC/DC), Germany’s legendary metal band ACCEPT will return to tour the U.S. for the first time in 14 years on a co-headlining tour with King’s X. Their first show will kick-off the eleventh annual ProgPower USA festival in Atlanta.

Guitarist & songwriter Wolf Hoffman checks in about the band’s time in Germany and their upcoming North American trek:

“Believe me, this was boot camp, but we loved every minute of it! Twelve months ago, there was nothing on the horizon that would have made us believe we would be on the stages of the world again as ACCEPT… and here we are! [New lead vocalist] Mark Tornillo inspires us to get it all out in a way we have not been challenged before. We can't wait to be on stage with him!!!! He is the new kid on the block and he is the reason we are back again. It is such a relief, such vitamin shot!!! And if we could, we would never stop!!!”

When asked what has surprised the band the most about their fans, Hoffman responds enthusiastically:

“NO DOUBT ABOUT IT – the biggest surprise is the way they make us feel welcomed. Of course we hoped the fans would be happy to have us back - who would not believe that about their fans? - but, what is happening here, EVERYWHERE we go, is a TOTAL KNOCK-OUT for us. WE HAVE NOT SEEN FANS SO HAPPY IN A LONG, LONG TIME.”

Confirmed tour dates are as follows:

09/09/2010 ProgPower USA Kick-Off – Atlanta, GA Center Stage
09/23/2010 The Chance - Poughkeepsie, NY

In honor of this move this week we look at some of the heroic and/or bad ass (rating of 10) and not so heroic/or not so bad ass (rating of 1) moments from the world of videos. More...
