Justin Broadrick Announces The End Of Godflesh

Justin K. Broadrick, the vocalist and guitarist of industrial metal pioneers Godflesh, has announced that the band will no longer perform live. This follows a recent major surgery, which has left the musician feeling that he can no longer perform the vocal style Godflesh requires. He also confirmed that a new album, "Decay," will be released later this year, with another to follow, though there will still be remix and live albums. On his Instagram account, Broadrick wrote the following:

"I’ve dreaded sharing this news, partly due to the threat of insensitive and/or negative comments, combined simply with the general anxiety of it all, I am also exhausted, but I’ve left comments on.

"So, 3 weeks ago I had significant open abdominal surgery for a inguinal hernia that was close to an emergency. I am still in shock from the process, and as someone with diagnosed Autism and C-PTSD, open surgery is absolutely debilitating, not that it is easier for anyone of course.

"I had a huge hernia, and for it to be repaired, I had to endure a 6 inch incision in my groin. This unfortunately was not keyhole surgery. I have a very weak abdominal wall, which at being 57 yrs old this year, is not going to improve.

"If I continue to perform and shout/scream as I do with Godflesh, then I am at high risk for more hernias, and blowing out my abdominal wall entirely.

"Godflesh live ended the day of my surgery, and upon the surgeon making this statement. I am now just about walking freely, but with little pace, albeit extremely carefully. The full healing process is approximately 6 months.

"Fortunately, my other projects do not require screaming/shouting nor a physically demanding performance; jesu and JK FLESH shows remain.

"I have been mixing, what will be the penultimate Godflesh album - ‘Decay’, for release on Relapse in hopefully July/Aug, mixes are being completed imminently. The album is basically done. I’ve had the final Godflesh studio album written, for almost a year and half now, that will be recorded and completed late 2026. After that there will continue to be Godflesh dub albums, live albums, and so on, but no new studio releases nor performances.

"In the near future, a new solo project will emerge, further exploring the parameters of heavy/ugly music, featuring my guitars and electronics, and of course vocals, but NOT shouted vocals!

"Regarding Godflesh in Athens, Gr, please contact the promotion for details, etc. There will be an official announcement via my agency/management regarding this ASAP.

"Thank you for your understanding.

"Take care out there.
Justin" More...

Desertfest London 2024: Day 3

Once again, we come to the finale. The last day of a festival is always bittersweet. A time of sadness because you know things go back to normal tomorrow, but also of joy because there's another day full of great music ahead. While attendees didn't have The Roundhouse to enjoy on the last day, the Electric Ballroom was open to us again and boasted a wealth of talent ready to perform. As always though, The Underworld was open for business and that's where we begin today's report.

Heading down the staircase and into the venue, the crowd were welcomed by Noisepicker. The duo, comprised of Orange Goblin bassist Harry Armstrong on guitar & vocals and drummer Kieran Murphy, emit the vibe of a local band one might see down the pub, but the kind that you have to tell your friends about right away. They mix a healthy variety of music, including doom and punk to create something fun and lively, enticing the crowd with a good time. While the music itself is solid and very enjoyable, the tongue does seem to be placed firmly in cheek with Armstrong's delivery and banter with the audience. Honestly speaking, there may not be a huge legacy ahead for Noisepicker itself, despite the brilliant moniker, but they can definitely craft out a good reputation as a live band, one which perfectly opens a show and gets everyone in the right frame of mind. Greekbastard's 2023 Anti-List For 2023

I get bored of making lists, reading lists, being listed, etc., but here I am at the end of 2023 compiling my thoughts on creating a list that only a handful of people will actually take the time to read. This is not a dig on those that create/read/ingest lists, rather me brainstorming on what to put down in words my most metal memories of 2023. Depending on who reads this, we might even share some of these memories, so without further ado, let’s do this.

I want to give my respects to some of the fallen this year. Some were founding members of their respective bands, but the music will live on in their memory. Rest In Power: Josua Henrik Lander Madsen (Artillery), Jim Durkin (Dark Angel), Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), Anthony Meo (Biohazard), Ryan Siew (Polaris), Zach Scott (Beyond Extinction), Mark Adams (Saint Vitus), Kirk Arrington (Metal Church), Jon Kennedy (Hecate Enthroned).

In 2023, there were some headlines in the metal cosmos that stood out. For starters, Sepultura calling it a day. How about Mike Portnoy rejoining Dream Theater? Or, Ozzy canceling his appearance at Power Trip festival, or even better, AC/DC’s triumphant return at that very same festival? More...

Godflesh To Release New Album In June

British industrial metal pioneers Godflesh has announced that they will be releasing a brand new album, "Purge" on June 9th. A digital EP in anticipation of the release, entitled "Nero" will be released on April 3rd.

With the highly anticipated new album "Purge," Godflesh revisits and updates the concepts of "Pure" (1992), as well as bringing a whole host of new dirges and laments. Amongst the many layers of dirt, "Purge" mangles 90s hip hop grooves and puts them through the Godflesh filter to create something futuristic in style - and utterly unique.

Both minimal and maximal, Godflesh deliver alien grooves that swing whilst also retaining the psychedelic, bad trip edge with layer upon layer of filth and heaviness - that Godflesh have always been known for. This is, and always has been, feel-bad music.

The title alone - "Purge" - references directly how songwriter and creator Justin K. Broadrick utilises Godflesh's music as a temporary relief from his diagnosed autism and PTSD. It's the next stage in a journey he has been on since he began creating music, feeling alone and like an outsider in any scene or group, from childhood through to adulthood.

The music of Godflesh gives Broadrick the means to express a lifetime of feeling misunderstood and overwhelmed by hyper-sensitivity. The band is the vehicle to provide some sense of catharsis and transcendence; a way of communicating overload, as well as the constant disenchantment at the human condition, and man's abuse of power and the systems that chain us.

"Purge" references the cycle of horror that man always has and always will put us through; those in positions of power revel in the infliction of pain and horror upon individuals - in the name of their religion, their power, their money, their flags... More...

Godflesh Digs Deep For London Show

Godflesh has always been a law unto themselves. For as much as they are pigeonholed in the industrial metal category, which is definitely a tag they helped create, they've never been afraid to take risks, veer into new territory and challenge any preconceived notions as to what Godflesh is. While not always in full metal mode, as evidenced by their latest album, 2017's excellent, "Post Self," they will always attract headbangers thanks to their connection to Napalm Death, though they certainly don't cater to this crowd specifically.

The Birmingham duo recently completed a two night residency at the 229 club in London, a venue located immediately to the left of Great Portland Road tube station, which is a fascinating place in and of itself. The 229 is a club which not only hosts a variety of performances, but all profits go to benefit university students and inside it's something of a mix of different typical settings. The main hall itself is quite big, with a raised stage and, at least on this occasion, folding chairs located either side, almost like an assembly hall or community centre, while towards the back is a bar not unlike one would find in the more corporate place like an 02 Academy. The staff were also excellent for the most part, being very friendly and welcoming, though this was also the first time I've ever seen security stand amidst the crowd, for what reason, I haven't worked out. Grave and Godflesh To Play Mystic Festival 2023

Godflesh, Grave, Planet of Zeus, and Birds in Row will play Mystic Festival's 2023 edition.

“Terrorizer” magazine placed the debut album of Godflesh, “Streetcleaner” (1989) at the top of their “heaviest records in history” ranking. Not without a reason, since upon hearing “Like Rats” from that very record, one can expect one’s brains to be blown out. They were the first to combine the soullessness of industrial music, the brutal nature of death metal, and the severity of grind core. But that was just the beginning of the fascinating story of Godflesh, which later on involved post-punk, ambient, and dub. Yet, their shows is not just a history lesson, but a cleansing experience extending beyond music.

You will never see heaven, but you will see Grave in Gdansk Shipyard. Their debut “Into the Grave” (1991) was one of the records which defined Swedish death metal as a rival to American death metal onslaught. Years passed, Grave’s line-up changed, but their intensity, strength, and the morbid stench of their music remains the same.

Planet of Zeus play a mix of stoner metal and hard rock, but they sometimes also roam into psychedelic deserts, and they do it extremely effectively.

Mystic Festival 2023 will take place on June 7-10 in Gdansk, at the already familiar grounds of the Shipyard. More information and tickets can be found on their website.

Brutal Assault Festival Band Upddate Announced

Brutal Assault Festival announces another band update for its upcoming 2019 edition. Tells the festival promotion agency:

"Let’s open this mega update with a black metal stormblast! Over seven years, deathlike silence has filled the halls of the world’s biggest black metal forge, whilst powers have been gathering to resurrect the band right in time for their 25th anniversary. And now DIMMU BORGIR have finally returned with a vicious work of art that is their latest album Eonian and they are coming to storm the main stage at Brutal Assault!
Wicked aural filth comes from the islands with GODFLESH, who are highly regarded as one of the pioneers of industrial metal; they took industrial to the next level with their fuse of heavy guitars and mixing it with slow drum loops and effects and their unique approach has spawned several musical styles since their conception.
Brutal Assault will also present a combo of iconic thrashers that need no introduction, ANTHRAX and SACRED REICH will make it to the fest alongside upcoming crossover thrash ministry IRON REAGAN and a staple name of the genre PRONG. More...
