The mighty Scumdogs of the Universe, otherwise known as Gwar, invaded the Starland Ballroom of Sayreville, NJ this past Sunday, October the 15th. This Gwar conquest was the first of Gwar's that my friend and I had witnessed. Before Gwar began their set though, The Red Chord and Municipal Waste had the honors of the opening ceremony.
Municipal Waste started off. I had heard of them through a friend that directed me to their myspace page. From that, I knew that Municipal Waste was a decent band, but after watching them spread their toxic thrash, I must say that I was thoroughly impressed. Municipal Waste’s first two songs were only ok, but after that their intense energy and quality music got me into them. Municipal Waste impressed me at the end of their set by taking out a boogie board and the singer climbed on top of it as the crowd kept it up and he stood up on it and finished out the set on the boogie board, literally crowd surfing. I thought that would be a hard act to follow, but I knew Gwar was going to be able to; they’re intergalactic warriors after all. But before that, The Red Chord came on. More...
You can now catch a glimpse of the final trailer for Earache Records’ forthcoming videogame online. ‘Earache Extreme Metal Racing’ is due to be released in the UK and Europe on November 3rd on PlayStation 2, PSP and PC and is set to take the videogaming world by storm.
The game features ten evil Earache racing teams battling it out on a torturous track that takes the wicked racers into the depths of hell and beyond. The teams you can drive around the 4 satanically-inspired levels include Mortiis, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Akercocke, Decapitated, Biomechanical, Municipal Waste, The Berzerker, Linea77 and Society 1.
For the first time this game introduces the world of video gaming to the genre of extreme metal head on, as fans will simultaneously be able to race their favourite artists whilst doing battle to over 3 hours of Earache’s most annihilating releases. The soundtrack to this brutal game not only features music and videos from the racing teams, but also includes tracks from classic Earache bands such as Napalm Death, At The Gates, Cathedral plus bonus unreleased material and videos.
New Jersey quintet Burnt By The Sun recently logged time in Belford, New Jersey's Wet Side Studio with engineer Mike Hill to record their first new material in over three years.
The recording marks Burnt By The Sun's (Municipal Waste drummer Dave Witte, guitarists John Adubato and Nick Hale, bassist Ted Patterson, vocalist Mike Olender) first foray into a recording studio since 2003's "The Perfect Is the Enemy of the Good," as well as Hale's debut on second guitar with the band.
The band recorded several tracks, including a brand new song titled "Goliath" and a new version of "When Corporations Rule Your Mom" (originally released on Ferret Music as part of a split release with Luddite Clone). "Goliath" will see a fall release via Relapse Records as part of a split 7" with New York's Car Bomb.
The writing of the new Burnt By The Sun album will continue through the winter for a projected late-2007 release.
"LandPhil" of MUNICIPAL WASTE has started a side project with his brother named "Cannabis Corpse," explained as "Sadistic Reefer Worship!"

BIRDS OF PREY has inked a deal with Relapse Records to release its debut album, Weight of the Wound.
BIRDS OF PREY is a studio project featuring the creative collective of Erik Larson (ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY) and Bo Leslie (THE LAST VAN ZANT / ex-THROTTLEROD) on guitars, Summer Welch (BARONESS) on bass, Dave Witte (BURNT BY THE SUN, MUNICIPAL WASTE) on drums and Ben Hogg (BEATEN BACK TO PURE) on vocals. The quintet holed up at the Karma Productions studio in Richmond, VA with Cory Smoot (aka Flatus Maximus of GWAR) this past December to record Weight of the Wound.
Leslie comments; "”Excited" isn't a very kvlt, true, or metal thing to say, but I'm excited to be a part of the Birds Of Prey and I am waaaaaayyy into "Weight Of The Wound" being a Relapse release. We set out with the intentions of writing and recording an "old school" type record and this is what came out. Hope y'all dig it, and to quote MORRIAH, let the sword descend.”
Weight of the Wound is expected to see a late July 2006 release date.
Savannah sludge rockers KYLESA will be back on the road on the East Coast this spring to continue supporting 2005's critically-acclaimed "To Walk A Middle Course." Landing on a handful of year-end lists, the band will take that buzz on the road alongside a variety of other acts including Municipal Waste, Baroness, Victims, and labelmates Yakuza. More dates will be announced as they are confirmed.
Last month, Kylesa settled on a replacement for the band's vacant drummer position: 2 of them. "Since the dawn of Kylesa, it was our intention to have two drummers but at the time it didn't pan out," the band says. "Finally, after 5 years it has become a reality and two new members have been added to play drums: Jeff Porter from Detroit and Carl McGinley of Savannah (who also drums for the Unpersons). We feel that this is our strongest line up as of yet and new and old songs are coming along great."
