Whidbey Island, Washington isn't that remote, but is only accessible via the Port Townsend ferry on the Olympic Peninsula, the Mukilteo ferry north of Seattle and the Deception Pass bridge up by Anacortes. It is in this splendid isolation that one of America's most revered seminal crossover bands, The Accused, found its inspiration. The time was 1981 and the place was the town of Oak Harbor.
Before the beginnings of grunge proliferated to the extent of being a pox on the Seattle area (except for the really good bands), The Accused had already started honing its pioneering hardcore metal sound. There were other bands doing the same thing such as DRI, COC, Cryptic Slaughter and Broken Bones (to name a few), but The Accused came from an area far removed from these other bands and thus had a distinct sound very unlike anyone else. We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories from metal shows. This week new The Accused frontman Kevin Cochneuer tells us about not just one broken nose sustained in the mosh pit, but two:
I was at The Showbox Market venues here in Seattle catching a Motorhead/C.O.C show, this had to of been like 5-6 yrs ago. I'm rock'n out and going totally crazy in the pit, anyone who has been to a Motorhead show knows that the pit can get pretty crazy! So I'm bebopping around and decide that I'm going to run the other way only to slam face first into the top of some guys head! Instantly knowing I broke my nose! I made my way out of the pit, which seemed to be a mile long at this point, and headed to the restroom to see the damage. Sure enough it was broken. My nose was totaled and hanging out on the right side of my face. As I'm standing there assessing the damage' a passer buy walks in and asks " Hay man are you okay!" To his reply I grabbed my nose and with a quick tug forced it back in to a seemingly normal position. With a gush of blood I said " No problems here buddy!" Then like a true soldier or a total idiot I went back into the pit!
But wait, there's more! Just last year I was at another show with a friend of mine. I want to say it was Overkill at the El Corazon in Seattle and we were both in the pit. Word to the wise just because you have a friend in the pit does not mean its any safer! Okay so I'm rock'n out like usual and my "friend" comes up from behind and pins my arms to my side. Now I'm helpless to any oncoming battery from the nearest caveman. Sure enough, BANG! We get slammed and hit the ground. With my face smashed against the floor and my buddy flailing on top of me like a turtle on his back once again my nose was broken! I know now that if I want to go in to a pit that I stay clear of my friends and keep my head down because you never know who or what is going to come around a brake your face!
I was actually caught on video in a pit at the American Carnage tour that happened last year! You can view it here!!! [-ed: or below] I'm the big guy with the shaved head clearly dominating the center of the pit and yes the long haired guy that is standing next to me is the "friend" from the Overkill show!
That is my pit stories! I hope you enjoy the and I hope you learn something from them!

In addition to new frontman Kevin Cochneuer (previously unannounced), the band added drummer Warren A. Pease earlier this year.

Veteran Seattle hardcore act The Accused has posted the following update online, announcing the addition of drummer Warren A. Pease to the band's line-up:
"[Warren's] a relatively young chap at the tender age of 25. Then again, with The Accused founding guitarist, Tommy Niemeyer, rounding the corner heading into half-century territory, who isn't young to that old fucker?
"Warren, or 'Andy' as he's affectionately referred to most noticeably at first brings his youthful enthusiasm and perpetual grin to The Accused. But don't let the friendly face fool you into thinking this is some run-of-the-mill, trigger-tapping tom-tom-tickler. No! The young Mr. Pease possesses an absolutely mind-boggling, pile-driving, double-kick drumming style that will make you wonder if he's got extra appendages hidden away back there somewhere.
"Having the freshly-plucked Warren A. Pease now on drums will up the ante for all who are dealt-in when The Accused bring their horror-filled freak show to the stage sometime early 2011. The Kings of Splatter Rock are back with a vicious and brutal hardcore attack."

The Accused has issued the following statement about missing their October 23rd tour date:
"An October 23rd Port Angeles, WA concert by The Accused was cut-short and foiled Friday when extremely high winds over the waters of Puget Sound forced Washington State Ferries officials to shut-down ferry service to the area, which in turn prohibited one of the band members of the night's headliners The Accused from accessing that part of Washington State.
"Located about 2 hour's drive Northwest of Seattle, Port Angeles, WA is located in a remote, densely-forrested region of the Evergreen State known as the Olympic Penninsula. Access to the town is limited, with only two main roads leading in or out; from either old Highway 101 west of the rugged, snow-capped Olympic Mountain range, or via the scenic Peninsula State highway--the route which the stranded band member was preparing to take.
"Prohibiting this veteran Washingtonian access to the highway leading into Pt. Angeles, however was the impromptu cancelling of the 35 minute Pt. Townsend - Keystone ferry ride across the Puget Sound; an order placed by the ferry Captain merely minutes before the guitarist's arrival at the dock. With a useless pre-paid reservation ticket in his hand and no other practical way to access the town the distraught musician had to call and tell the rest of the band that he was stuck and couldn't get to the show. The Accused has issued the following tour recap and announcement about dropping off the upcoming Municipal Waste tour:
"The members and crew of The Accused wish to say, 'Thanks!' to all the loyal, die-hard Splatter Heads we got to play for and hang-out with during our recent western United States tour which began late September and wrapped up October 18, 2009 in Santa Cruz, CA The Accused would also like to give a special toast to all the new Splatter Heads just joining us! Welcome Aboard, Folks! You now have Martha Splatterhead on your side, and that's MUCH better than having her as an enemy--believe us!
"ALSO: A VERY important update regarding Municipal Waste 2009 tour; Due to scheduling conflicts The Accused were forced to drop-off as support act during one leg of the Municipal Waste U.S. / Canada tour November 2009. Other regions with other support acts on the Municipal Waste headlining tour are unaffected as far as we know. A replacement act to fill the void left by The Accused is pending.
"LOTS of projects under way at Splatter Headquarters in Seattle! Now is a pretty damned good time to be a Splatter Head, let's just put it THAT way! Until we meet again, you crazy fuckers--CHEERS!"

While busy working on the follow up to 2007's horror metal masterpiece, "They Live," DENIAL FIEND bassist Terry Butler (SIX FEET UNDER, ex-MASSACRE, ex-DEATH) and guitarist Sam Williams (DOWN BY LAW, PSEUDO HEROES) are pleased to welcome two new additions into the line-up.
Taking over the recently vacanted drum throne is D.R.I skinsman, Rob Rampy. Known for his percussive intensity, Rampy will be joining the band as a permanent member. Joining forces with the trio, as they pound out tunes for their forthcoming EP, is none other than Blaine Cook (THE ACCUSED, TOE TAG) as a guest lead vocalist.
Williams had this to say about the recent roster developments, "We're really happy to be working with Rob, as we're huge fans of his work with D.R.I. The guy is old-school, fast and tight. And although Blaine won't be a permanent member of the band, we're extremely pleased to have him with us on this EP. Of course THE ACCUSED has always been a major influence on DENIAL FIEND. Both of these guys fit our current direction perfectly - a little faster, a little more technical, and more thrashy all the way around."
The as of yet untitled EP will be released sometime in 2009 on Ibex Moon Records, followed by a number of live dates across the US.
Seattle's reigning kings of "splatter rock" THE ACCUSED have just completed work on two new songs — "Fuck Sorry" and "Scotty Came Back" — for their upcoming album, scheduled for release late May. The band spent less than 24 hours recording and mixing the tracks with producer Randall Dunn (SUNN O))), BURNING WITCH, etc.) at his studio in Seattle. These first recordings mark the debut of the "new" lineup, which features Brad Mowen (BURNING WITCH, AVSA, 90 PROOF, MOMMY, SWEATY NIPPLES, APES OF WRATH) on vocals, Mike Peterson (BAM BAM, MOMMY, APES OF WRATH, SEAN) on drums, Prof. Iman A. Phid (formerly "Father Shark" of industrial/metal perverts THE PLEASURE ELITE) on bass and original guitarist Tommy Niemeyer. At least one of the tracks is scheduled to be available for free download via the band's official web site on or before January 26. THE ACCUSED plans to record with Dunn for its upcoming full-length release again in the spring.
YOB update from Mike:
YOB just had the privilege to play with one of the greatest crossover bands of all time, The Accused, in Portland, Oregon on October 15th. It was a packed show at Dante's in the downtown area. YOB opened with show and played a great set! Our setlist: 1) Quantum Mystic (a new song), two songs from our new cd 2) Ball Of Molten Lead and 3) Exorcism Of The Host, and 4) the middle to the end of the song Catharsis from our last album. Our set went over really well! The next up was Winter Of Apokalype which is three-fourths Thy Infernal. WoA are ripping black metal in the vein of early Mayhem and Burzum. They destroyed the audience with their dark soul-foul hymns! The Accused completely ruled! They were just as good as they have ever been with Blaine jumping all over the stage in convulsive bouts of zombie punk insanity. They were super great people to hang out with too and they were very gracious to YOB and their fans.
YOB has also launched our new merchandise section at our website! You can buy shirts, CD's, buttons and stickers in a shopping cart format with secure online visa and MasterCard transactions! Go here to check it out!
Stay HEAVY!!! DOOM!!! From Mike-slave to YOB!!!
