Ascend Announce New Release
ASCEND is a new collaborative musical project between Gentry Densley (Iceburn, Eagle Twin) and Greg Anderson (sunn 0))), Goatsnake, Engine Kid). Both have been making music that has crossed paths several times in the last 19 years, the most notable being during the 90s when Anderson's band Engine Kid toured with and shared a split album with Densely’s band Iceburn. During that time both were heavily experimenting with the fusion of jazz (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, John Coltrane) and the dark behemoth tones of influences such as The Melvins, Gore, Slint, and Caspar Brotzman.
Hitting stores on May 27th, ASCEND re-visits some of the tones and moods of their past works as well as traveling into uncharted territory all done with the utmost focus on heaviness and power, with the album "Ample Fire Within." Of particular note is the vocal performance by Gentry Densley. His voice is deep and ominous with a subtle Tom Waits influence within the growls and gruffness that is emoted. Anderson gushes enthusiastically: "we were extremely fortunate to have a lot of help from our friends with this recording. Andy Patterson pounded the hell out of the drums, and Steve Moore (aka Stebmo, also in Earth and often times sunn 0))) ) added some trombone (“Obelisk of Kolob”, and “Dark Matter”), organ (“Her Horse Is Thunder”, “Dark Matter”) and some amazing wurlitzer (“Amplifier Within”, “Divine”). His playing brings a dark, sophisticated jazz atmosphere to the album. On the track "V O G" we were blessed to have Bubba Dupree (Void) AND none other than Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) put down some incredible lead work!"
The entire album was mixed by Randall Dunn (Earth, sunn 0))), Kinski,) and mastered by Mell Dettmer who is turning into the "house-mastering wizardress" for the Southern Lord label.
Below are a few samples from the album:
Earth Readies New Album
The unveiling of the new Earth studio album is upon us. The band returns once again to it’s continuing evolution. Where “Hex” reveled in dark satanic twang and austere american beauty, “The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull” finds Dylan Carlson and the band growing into a harder, more rock, american Gospel and impovisitory direction framed by truly psychedelic production and blazing guitar sounds.
Earth is also very honored to be joined on this record for three songs by legendary and virtuoso guitarist Bill Frisell. Mr. Frisell adds a brilliant texture and counterpoint to the scintillating and inspired riffs of Dylan carlson and the band. Adrienne Davies joins again on drums lending a classic and steady feel to the proceedings. Steve Moore also returns adding heavy hammond organ and his intense jazz inspired piano playing. Live Bassist Don McGreevy also makes his full length Earth debut on this record. The CD comes nicely packaged in a slip-case/o-card and features artwork by Arik Roper.
"Bees"… will be available in stores on Feb. 26th, however here is a chance to hear it prior to that date by ordering directly from Southern Lord (they also have an exclusively authorized t-shirt and sweatshirt with the killer artwork from the album).
The band is about to embark on a month-long European tour with Sir Richard Bishop. They will have copies of the special tour split 12? with Sir Richard Bishop with them, and now this is the only place to get them as the copies for sale via the Southern Lord store were snatched up in a matter of hours.

Earth Sign To Southern Lord
Southern Lord has announced a partnership with EARTH. EARTH has long been one of the primary influences of many Southern Lord artists, including the inspiration of the formation, sound, theory, and execution of sunn0))). Over the last 10+ EARTH has had a mysterious and abstruse career. Despite a multitude of entanglements EARTH released 4 classic album on Sub Pop records in the early to mid nineties. They have left their own unique stamp on modern music and are without question the fore-fathers of drone music.
EARTH 2004 (and beyond) consits of group founder: Dylan Carlson on guitar and Adrienne Davies (percussion). The duo is stronger and more determined then ever before, with many shows already performed in the USA, and Europe along side supporters such as: SUNN 0)), KHANATE, WHITEHOUSE, KK Null etc.. A collection of early recordings ("sunn amps and smashed guitars") and extremely limited vinyl releases have surfaced over the last 4 years. Not until now will a entire album of new, unreleased, unheard material be forthcoming from EARTH.
EARTH will enter the studio in January 2005 to record their debut album (the first new studio album in 9 years) for Southern Lord. Dylan and Adrienne are very enthusiastic that after a long hiatus, brand new material will finally become available.
