Voivod (consisting of singer Denis "Snake" Belanger, guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, drummer Michel Langevin, and bassist Jean-Yves Theriault) was one of the first thrash bands out of Canada to gain popularity outside of their home country. From their beginning in the early '80s, their main goal was to be different from anyone else and thus they incorporated odd musical tempos and futuristic story lines into their songs, often dealing with technology taking over the world. Voivod opened the way for other Canadian thrash bands and for metal bands with their unique styles of performing and writing.
Such early releases as 1984's "War and Pain" and 1986's "Rrrroooaaarrr!" showed that the quartet was aligned to the then up-and-coming thrash metal movement, eventually letting their prog-rock influences seep in on 1987's "Killing Technology" and 1988's "Dimension Hatross." By the time of their major-label debut for MCA, 1989's "Nothingface," Voivod had perfected their thrash metal/prog rock style, resulting in the most commercially successful release of their career -- spearheaded by a video for their cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" (which enjoyed airings on MTV's Headbangers Ball) and a headlining club tour over a pair of bands that would soon change the landscape of alt-rock by the early '90s, Soundgarden and Faith No More.
But just as it appeared as though Voivod may be able to break through to a wider audience, Theriault left the group right after the release of 1991's "Angel Rat" as the album quickly sunk from sight while the rest of the rock world focused their attention on the burgeoning alt-rock/Seattle movement. "The Outer Limits" followed two years later, which was followed shortly thereafter by Belanger's exit from the band. By the mid-'90s, Voivod's lineup had been scaled down to a trio -- newcomer Eric Forest doubled on vocals and bass, resulting in such releases as 1995's "Negatron" (which was the #1 Aggressive Rock in the United States in the first week of release) and 1997's "Phobos." 2000 saw the release of the odds and ends compilation "Kronik" as well as the live set "Lives." In early 2001, the remaining members decided to call it a day when Forest departed, only to reunite several months later with Belanger back on board and with former Metallica member (and longtime Voivod fan) Jason Newsted filling in on bass.

By many outsiders, heavy metal has been dismissed as "music for idiots," but time and time again, heavy metal bands have proved the naysayers wrong by displaying well researched and intelligent lyrics, along with complex musicianship. One of the best examples of "thinking man's heavy metal," comes from Canadian progressive thrashers, Voivod. The band was formed in the town of Jonquière, Quebec in 1982, and like many of their contemporaries, where influenced by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, as well as hardcore punk and seventies progressive rock bands such as Yes. By fusing these influences, Voivod forged their own brand of heavy metal, which would satisfy the average headbanger, as well as any music critic. The band were also known for adopting aliases. Lead singer Denis Belanger became known as, "Snake," guitarist Denis D'Amour went by the name, "Piggy," drummer and band artist Michel Langevin used the moniker, "Away" and bassist Jean-Yves Theriault named himself, "Blacky." The group released their first studio album, "War And Pain" in 1984, which followed a more speed metal style than future releases.
Their second album, "Rrröööaaarrr" featured a speed metal theme once again before the band began incorporating their love of progressive rock with their next album, "Killing Technology." The album earned the band a spot as one of the more unique young metal bands, and the group continued this path with their next album, "Dimension Hatross," which has become one of their most acclaimed albums to date and featured the staple song, "Tribal Convictions," as well as a comical cover of the 1960's Batman television show theme song. Their next album, "Nothingface," saw the band break through into the mainstream somewhat, as it became their first album to enter the Billboard charts and featured a minor hit in the form of the band's cover of the Pink Floyd song, "Astronomy Domine." Not only was it successful in terms of sales, but it gained universal praise for it's musicianship and songwriting prowess. More...

Pittsburgh's newest progressive metal act Hyperion have announced the guest musicians set to appear on the band's debut album "Orchestrating The Myth." Guest musicians set to appear on the album include Glen Drover of Megadeth and Dan Mongrain of Voivod. "Orchestrating The Myth" is planned for a late 2010 or early 2011 release.
Michael "Away" Langevin, the drummer for Canadian metal veterans Voivod, has revealed that contrary to previous plans, the band has decided to continue and are currently working on brand new material. There was alot of speculation that the band's last studio album, "Infini" would be their last, as it featured the final guitar parts from deceased guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'amour. In a recent interview with MusicNerd.ca, Langevin stated:
"I don’t think we’ve actually said this in public before, but we are writing new material as of last month. We want to give it a try and to see what we can do with this lineup and take it from there.
"We actually went into the studio, improvised what we were playing and recorded everything. We’re picking bits and pieces that we like and will try to build a record from it. While it’s going very well, I think it is too early to say whether it will turn into a full album for release."
Canada's Aux music channel has posted a video interview online with Voivod, which can be viewed below.
Thrash is back. After dying off in the 1990s and returning in the mid-2000s it's finally returned, with four of five bands playing coming from metal's most headbangable genre. And it was a very special night given that two of the bands touring were originally local bands, one based in Kenosha, Wisconsin and the other from Wheaton, Illinois which proves that the Chicago metal scene has finally come into its own rather than simply live in the shadow of Ministry and Disturbed. On March 6, 2010 I went to see Kreator perform at the Nokia Theater in New York City. I was very eager to see Evile, Voivod, and Kreator. I have been a fan of Kreator for some time now, but have only heard one album, “Extreme Aggression.” Evile is a band I was interested in seeing because I have their demo, but have yet to explore much outside of what is on their MySpace page. Voivod has been recommended to me by friends, but I’ve never taken the time to properly explore them. When I arrived at the venue, Lazarus A.D. started playing. More...
Mille Petrozza, front man & guitarist for German thrash stalwarts KREATOR, shares an update on the band’s upcoming North American tour. The 23-date trek coincides with KREATOR’s 25th anniversary and launched yesterday March 3rd at Jaxx in West Springfield, Virginia:
“Right now we are rehearsing our new 2010 anniversary set list. There’s a lot of new stuff that we had to re-learn, some songs we haven't played in a while, plus different stuff from the last album we didn't play at shows in 2009. Thanks for the thousands of votes in our forum regarding the anniversary set list! Of course we can’t play all the requested songs in a ninety minute set, but there will definitely be some tracks that may surprise a couple of you, so be prepared!
"Looking forward to playing with our long-time friends in Voïvod again on our upcoming tour. It will take us all across North America and Canada once again. Can’t wait to see Evile, Kataklysm, Nachtmystium, Lightning Swords of Death and Lazarus A.D., as well. This will be a night of total violence, so be there!!!"
"Also, a big THANK YOU to our German fans for making Hordes Of Chaos 2009's ‘Record of the Year’ in Germany’s most important magazine - Rock Hard! Ihr seid die besten!” More...

This winter, Lazarus A.D. once again teamed up with Vision 4 Films to shoot their next video. "Absolute Power" will premiere sometime before their upcoming tour with Kreator, Voivod, Nachtmystium and Evile. The video is a bit different than their last two in that it has a bit of a story line.
Guitarist Dan Gapen comments: “We just shot the new video for our next single 'Absolute Power.' I would say it was fun but to be honest it was cold, windy and rainy the day of the shoot and I froze my ass off. All I have to say is this fucking video better come out sweet or I’m kicking the directors ass…haha! I think when it’s done, everyone will like how it turned out. Jason & Emmitt from Vision4Films are pros at what they do, we can’t say thank you enough. We look forward to seeing everyone on the upcoming Spring tour w/ Kreator and Voivod!”

British thrashers, EVILE have recently announced that they will be embarking on their first major North American tours with such legendary acts as KREATOR and OVERKILL. EVILE frontman/guitarist, Matt Drake recently took some time to proclaim his (and the band's) excitement to hit the road across the pond in March through early-May:
"Well it's about time it happened, we can finally say that we are coming to the USA!! It's been a long time coming because we've tried before, we've had a few plans made in the past to get to the states but they always fell through but it's finally confirmed and happening. We couldn't be happier that we get to lay waste to peoples senses on a nightly basis with such legendary bands that we have nothing but respect for, we're looking forward to meeting people who have listened to our cd's but never had the chance to see us live and we're also looking forward to introducing ourselves to a lot of new people and instead of easing ourselves into it by doing a week or so we're going for a full on two month straight tour with only a few days off, the way it should be!! I'm personally looking forward to being able to visit such iconic places as New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco as these are the kind of places i never thought i would be lucky enough to see. Ladies and gentlemen the British are coming!!!!" More...
