Background

Voivod (consisting of singer Denis "Snake" Belanger, guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, drummer Michel Langevin, and bassist Jean-Yves Theriault) was one of the first thrash bands out of Canada to gain popularity outside of their home country. From their beginning in the early '80s, their main goal was to be different from anyone else and thus they incorporated odd musical tempos and futuristic story lines into their songs, often dealing with technology taking over the world. Voivod opened the way for other Canadian thrash bands and for metal bands with their unique styles of performing and writing.

Such early releases as 1984's "War and Pain" and 1986's "Rrrroooaaarrr!" showed that the quartet was aligned to the then up-and-coming thrash metal movement, eventually letting their prog-rock influences seep in on 1987's "Killing Technology" and 1988's "Dimension Hatross." By the time of their major-label debut for MCA, 1989's "Nothingface," Voivod had perfected their thrash metal/prog rock style, resulting in the most commercially successful release of their career -- spearheaded by a video for their cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" (which enjoyed airings on MTV's Headbangers Ball) and a headlining club tour over a pair of bands that would soon change the landscape of alt-rock by the early '90s, Soundgarden and Faith No More.

But just as it appeared as though Voivod may be able to break through to a wider audience, Theriault left the group right after the release of 1991's "Angel Rat" as the album quickly sunk from sight while the rest of the rock world focused their attention on the burgeoning alt-rock/Seattle movement. "The Outer Limits" followed two years later, which was followed shortly thereafter by Belanger's exit from the band. By the mid-'90s, Voivod's lineup had been scaled down to a trio -- newcomer Eric Forest doubled on vocals and bass, resulting in such releases as 1995's "Negatron" (which was the #1 Aggressive Rock in the United States in the first week of release) and 1997's "Phobos." 2000 saw the release of the odds and ends compilation "Kronik" as well as the live set "Lives." In early 2001, the remaining members decided to call it a day when Forest departed, only to reunite several months later with Belanger back on board and with former Metallica member (and longtime Voivod fan) Jason Newsted filling in on bass.

Voivod Begins Recording New Album

Canadian progressive thrash veterans Voivod has announced via a short post on Facebook that they have today entered the studio to begin recording a new album. The message, which simply read: "It is with great enthousiasm that we announce that Voivod is entering the Studio today for the next full length album! Exciting! Stay connected!" means that this will be the band's first full length album since 2013's, "Target Earth." The gap has been filled in the meantime with the 2016 EP, "Post Society," which comprised of songs released as split singles with Entombed A.D., Napalm Death and At The Gates, as well as a cover of the Hawkwind classic, "Silver Machine" and the title track.

In an interview with Rock Sverige earlier this year, drummer Michel Langevin (AKA, Away) stated that the new record would be a concept album and that it could very likely also be a double album, given the lengths of some of the songs. No further details have been confirmed as of yet.

Entombed A.D. Unleashes Hell In Bristol

Continuing the string of exciting touring partnerships recently, which have included the likes of Amon Amarth & Testament and Rotting Christ & Inquisition, Entombed A.D. are currently on the road in support of their latest album, "Dead Dawn," with another of metal's highly respected veterans, Voivod, joined along the way by Lord Dying and Morbid Evils. Last Sunday, the tour rolled into Bristol for a show at the Fleece which had a surprisingly small attendance but a huge atmosphere.

Kicking off the evening was Finnish doom metal trio, Morbid Evils, featuring Rotten Sound vocalist Keijo Niinimaa. The group really live up to their sub-genre's name, taking to the stage shortly after doors opened and letting loose a highly morose sound, which caught the attention of the early birds in the audience. Performing material from their debut album, "In Hate With the Burning World," the three Finns could be one to watch for all fans of doom metal, though listeners who aren't so keen on very slow, very dour music may not find what they're looking for. I love what this tour package offers: it's one of the most diverse lineups I've seen in recent times, and I know all three bands are in great form right now.

"We are currently touring in Australia, and previous to that we just got back from Europe with Soulfly where we performed thirty-six shows over six weeks in eighteen countries. Obviously we love being out on the road and when the opportunity to tour with childhood hero's Voivod came about, then we couldn't pass it up. We're looking forward to seeing all our friends out on the road in the US and Canada real soon!" More...

Berserker III Band Lineup Announced

This March, the Masonic Temple in Detroit, Michigan will play host to the annual Berserker Music Fest.

Now in its third year, the event - a truly DIY affair founded and organized by Child Bite frontman Shawn Knight and wife Veronica - Berskerer III boasts its most devouring lineups to date with the all-ages three-night/three-stage gala.

Appearances will be made by internationally touring acts like Voivod, Ghoul, Conan, Macabre, Cannabis Corpse and Black Tusk as well as a spattering of new and established Michigan-based artists like Acid Witch, Child Bite, Perversion and Shit Life.

Comments Knight, "It's a fucking blast putting this thing together. Veronica and I pick all of the bands and organize the entire weekend. I handle all of the art and a lot of the promotion side too. It's a metric shit ton of work and it's really stressful, but in the end it's all worth it. We're basically just making something that we wish was already had; a bit of the ol' 'if you build it, they will come.' I spent a lot of time at various metal fests last year, either playing them with Child Bite or simply attending them. It's great to see what works, what doesn't, and just in general let it affect how we plan our next event. This is our biggest lineup yet, and our biggest venue, so I can't wait to see how it all turns out!"

Sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon, VGKids, ESP Printing, UHF Records, CJAM 99.1 FM and Woodward Avenue Brewers, Berserker III will take place on March 3rd, 4th, and 5th with a special FREE PreSerker kickoff party slated to take place at Small's (Hamtramck) on Wednesday, March 2nd featuring eight bands on two stages. Many riffs were composed on the bus but until the North American tour with Vektor in 2016, we will spend most of wintertime in Montreal writing another batch of material. Meanwhile, we hope you will enjoy this EP of good old thrash-prog-punk-metal or whatever people want to call Voïvod nowadays :)" More...

Carcass Cause A ComMotion In Bristol

Every once in a while, a tour comes along with a lineup that's more or less impossible to ignore. This year, Europe is being treated to a veritable wet dream of extremity, as two of death metal's most revered bands, Carcass and Obituary, are teaming up with grindcore godfathers Napalm Death and Canadian progressive thrashers, Voivod, as well as Swiss act, Herod, to give headbangers the Deathcrusher tour. As if to get the grey island out of the way first, the trek began this past week in the United Kingdom and this reporter was lucky enough to witness the event in Bristol, at a venue called The Motion.

Opening the show was Herod, a progressive sludge metal band from Vevey in Switzerland, who released their debut album, "They Were None" last year. Although they didn't feel out of place as such on this bill, opening such an exciting lineup with sludge didn't seem like a particularly good idea and as a result, Herod came across as a boring start that created the sentiment opening bands dread; the old, "Let's just get this over with so we can watch what we came for," vibe. They received a relatively warm response from the crowd however, who it must be said of Bristol audiences, are usually supportive of unknown or new bands. Whatever the case, with a dull stage presence and uninteresting repertoire, Herod will need to wait until their next album before they seriously impress any passing punters. More...
