Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 29

Break out your tissue box and keep those cyanide tablets handy (just in case): you’re in for a bummed-out train wreck of an episode this week on the MetalUnderground.com Official Podcast. Stay tuned to the end, however, to see if your opinions match up with those of your silver-tongued co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure).

Before we begin, yet another reminder of our upcoming ticket giveaways at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. First comes The Black Dahlia Murder (supported by Suicide Silence) on Monday, October 13th, followed by Attila (supported by Crown The Empire and Like Moths To Flames) on Friday, November 14th.

If interested, please fire an email to podcast@metalunderground.com with one (or both) of the headlining bands in the subject heading and your full name (matching your ID) in the message body.

Additionally, if you’re an unsigned metal band with a kickass song you’d like to hear featured as our weekly intro music, we’d like to hear it! Please contact us via the email address above.

Now, time to get depressed. Mike bids solemn farewell to an underrated talent in the global metal underground: Tobias Graf, founding drummer of German melodic/symphonic death metal group Deadlock, who this week passed away for undisclosed reasons at the young age of 35. Graf left the band in April of this year, but played on all releases since the band’s 1997 formation.

Next… here come the Thought Police! We wish it were a joke, but a Kentucky youth has indeed been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism threats… for posting Exodus lyrics on Facebook. The Bay Area thrashers’ 2010 album “Exhibit B: The Human Condition” featured a song titled “Class Dismissed: A Hate Primer,” which told of the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting spree through the eyes of the deranged killer. The absurdity of this incident speaks for itself, but that doesn't stop us from commenting on it.

We all saw this coming over the course of the week, but still, it seemed to happen so damn fast. In the ultimate case of déjà vu, frontman Mark Hunter of Chimaira has been completely deserted by his bandmates en masse for the second time in three years. This time, he’s decided to throw in the towel, effectively putting an end to fifteen years and seven albums of cutting-edge American metal. Stay tuned for our thoughts on the matter.

Finally, we react to Swedish metal veterans In Flames’ new studio album “Siren Charms,” due for a September 9th release and currently streaming. Considering our devotion to this band through thick and thin over the years, our frustration in discussing this lackluster and disappointing new release is palpable, and it ain’t pretty.

If you make it through this episode without losing the will to live, then by all means, subscribe via iTunes and RSS feed. We hope to bring you some happier thoughts soon!

Roadrunner Records retro rock group Opeth has announced details about a return to North America for a coast-to-coast co-headline run with In Flames.

The nationwide trek, which will also feature support from Red Fang, is set to get underway on December 3rd at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago, IL and traverse North America through the end of the month.

“We are delighted to return to North America to tour our latest album ‘Pale Communion,’” commented Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt. “This will be the first of two North American tours and the fact that we are teaming up with our old friends In Flames for this co-headline tour means that we can get to play some large venues and present our new stage show. I am also looking forward to drinking expensive whiskey with Anders on his account!”

In Flames frontman Anders Fridén added, "I met [Opeth guitarist] Mikael [Akerfeldt] for the first time in 1998 during the recording of Opeth's album ‘My Arms, Your Hearse.’ I was working in the studio and we've been friends ever since. Now 16 years more beautiful, we release albums in the same cycle and it's with great honor and pleasure that In Flames share stage with our friends and fellow countrymen in Opeth." More...

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 19

There's been no shortage of hot-button weekly metal news lately - well, very little shortage, anyway; sometimes we at the Metalunderground.com Official Podcast (listen here) are forced to make shit up - and perhaps the most hotly contested announcement is that of the big ol' Singer Change. Replace a bassist or keyboardist and no one bats an eye. Replace a guitarist or drummer and healthy debate ensues. Replace a singer and everyone loses their minds.

It happened in March when Alissa White-Gluz (ex-The Agonist) stepped into the shoes of veteran Arch Enemy frontwoman Angela Gossow, and now it's happened again on the Left Coast: Bay Area thrashers Exodus have relieved vocalist Rob Dukes of his duties after nine years and four albums of service, making way for the return of previous frontman Steve "Zetro" Souza. Reactions have been mixed and somewhat heated, and here to discuss just that is your fabulous co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure).

Next, Mike and dashing co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) tackle the fresh new single "Rusted Nail" from Swedish metal giants In Flames, of which they both are confirmed fans for life. However, reactions to this song are mixed as well, and the overall attitude toward the band's upcoming album "Siren Charms" is one of... shall we say, "cautious optimism."

Finally, Mike offers his initial reaction to the upcoming album "Origins" from Swiss folk metal heroes Eluveitie. He was blessed with an early promo for review, and concludes that this effort combines elements of the band's past and present and is likely to satisfy fans old and new alike.

Tune in here, enjoy, and offer us your feedback. You can subscribe via iTunes or RSS, and don't forget to throw in for a free ticket giveaway in Fort Lauderdale (if you're able and willing) for DevilDriver at Revolution Live next Wednesday, June 18th. Just email us at podcast@metalunderground.com with "DEVILDRIVER" in the subject heading, and provide your name matching your ID.

In Flames Reveals New Album Title

Following a months-long, rather sadistic campaign of social media teasing, Swedish metal veterans In Flames have put the finishing touches on a clever promotional stunt for their fans' benefit.

Sporadic, vague hints ("The new album's title will contain eleven letters," "Its initials are 'S.C.'") and cryptic "#IF2014" hashtags abounded on the band's Facebook page for weeks that became months, encouraging an ongoing (and agonized) guessing game.

Then, yesterday, the band made the following announcement: "We have encountered some issues regarding our online platforms. We want to assure you that no Jesterhead [the band's fan club] member information has been compromised, and our team is working on a solution right now. We apologize for the inconvenience."

The band's website appeared to have been hacked, as evidenced by the following on the home page:

"sorry admin (n00b) [pwned by ~lOLzcH4Rm1nG~].

"HaXxED much?? Inflames, SERIOUSLY!! You have been tRolLiNg us 4 WAYAAH 2 long. As a result, you now got your site taken over. ok???

"you might also wanna speak to your webmastaa since you also forgot to put some decent locks on your servers... SO GUESS WHAT?! We will leak WHATEVER info we have found here tomrrow @ 6am EST."

A handy link, however, guides fans to what appears after all to be an official band announcement. The upcoming studio album, In Flames' eleventh, is titled "Siren Charms" and is expected out this September.

While an official release date and tracklist have yet to be announced, the provided link does offer a brief sample of new music to accompany the information.

"Siren Charms" will be In Flames' first studio effort since the successful and critically acclaimed "Sounds Of A Playground Fading," [reviewed here] released June 15th, 2011.

In Flames Issues Second Studio Update

The In Flames Jesterhead fan club has been blogging about the band's time in the studio working on a new full-length album. Today the following report was issued from the studio:

"Evening Jesterheads! Here is the second report from Berlin. Enjoy!

"After hearing the first 'finished' song the other day I was stoked to get back in the studio to hear more tunes.

"We arrived at the studio around 2pm and Niclas and Bjorn had already started recording new tunes and it was a great experience watching them work. A few moments later Anders joined us in the main recording room with the finished vocals of the second ‘finished’ track. And we were all really psyched to hear it.

"The room went quiet and the song started playing. Instantly noticed the classic In Flames signature sound, then had the pleasure of hearing the best vocals I have heard in ages. This was absolutely massive! By far some of the best vocals I have ever heard.

"When the track was finished clapping followed with everyone having a huge smile on their face. This was definitely a good day for the guys."

In Flames Checks In From The Studio

The In Flames Jesterhead fan club has checked in with the following update about the band working on a new album:

"Hey guys! Head Jester reporting here from the studio in Berlin. I just flew in yesterday to spend a couple of days with the band in the studio, and to report back to you, The Jesterheads!

"Today we listened to the first 'finished' song with vocals. It sounds fantastic, and more heavy than ever! Anders is really bringing it and I was blown away by the massive sound. We also listened to some of the other tracks that are being recorded right now. Everything sounds incredible, and you can really tell that this album will be a milestone for In Flames, probably their best album yet!

"Now it's time for some dinner with the band, stay tuned for more reports! Also, do not forget to check out the Jesterhead website for more daily updates and photos!"
