Primordial Posts "Nothing New Under The Sun" Video

Dublin, Ireland-based Pagan metal legends Primordial today unveil their video for "Nothing New Under The Sun." The track comes by way of the band‘s acclaimed How It Ends full-length, released last Fall via Metal Blade Records.

Comments vocalist A. A. Nemtheanga, "We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, The Bhagavad-Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, ’Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.‘ I suppose we all thought that, one way or another." Primordial Releases "How It Ends" Title Track

Dublin, Ireland-based Pagan metal legends Primordial have unleashed their moving new video for "How It Ends," the title track of their tenth studio album, out today on Metal Blade Records!

Having lasted thirty-two years and now returning with their devastating new studio offering, the follow-up to 2018’s critically lauded "Exile Amongst The Ruins" finds Primordial delivering more of their seminal blend of Celtic and black metal, with an extra added urgency, and staring down the apocalypse. "The title is a question – ‘is this how it ends? How it all goes down: culture, language, history, society, humanity…’ – who knows?," considers vocalist A. A. Nemtheanga. "Regardless of who you are or were, you get one chance at all of this, and it’s asking, ‘is this the end of your town, state, nation? Myths, traditions, relationships…?,’ and I suppose it asks the question, ‘who reacts, who rebels – how does it end now for them?’"

Working alongside founding members – bassist Pól MacAmlaigh and guitarist Ciáran MacUilliam – and longtime drummer Simon O’Laoghaire, the band started writing in earnest in the Fall of 2022, having lit a fire under themselves to work hastily and productively. The album was tracked at Hellfire Studios on the outskirts of Dublin, produced by the band and engineered by previous collaborator Chris Fielding. More...

Primordial Unveils New Lyric Video

Dublin, Ireland-based Pagan metal icons Primordial today unveil their new single, "Pilgrimage To The World's End," and its accompanying lyric video. The track comes by way of the band‘s tenth studio album, "How It Ends," set for release on September 29th via Metal Blade Records.

Having lasted thirty-two years and now returning with their devastating new studio offering, the Irish band has made it clear they are a primal force who consistently lay it all on the line. The follow-up to 2018‘s critically lauded "Exile Amongst The Ruins," "How It Ends" finds Primordial delivering more of their seminal blend of Celtic and black metal, with an extra added urgency, and staring down the apocalypse. in a world cluttered with soundalike bands in just about every metal subgenre, Primordial offers something real that cannot be denied. Says vocalist A. A. Nemtheanga, "It sounds stupid to say, but it‘s not fantasy, not escapism. It‘s not compromised and co-opted, it‘s genuine, in a world where that seems to count for less and less."

"The title is a question – ’is this how it ends?‘ How it all goes down: culture, language, history, society – humanity – who knows?," continues Nemtheanga. "Regardless of who you are or were, you get one chance at all of this, and it‘s asking is this the end of your town, state, nation? Myths, traditions, relationships, and I suppose it asks the question, who reacts, who rebels – how does it end now for them?"

Working alongside founding members – bassist Pól MacAmlaigh and guitarist Ciáran MacUilliam – and longtime drummer Simon O‘Laoghaire, the band started writing in earnest in the Fall of 2022, having lit a fire under themselves to work hastily and productively. Primordial never plans out a record beforehand, letting them come together naturally, though Nemtheanga knew he wanted something with a bigger, more open sound, and something more aggressive, which is exactly what they achieved.

Drawing lyrical influence both from modern and historical ideas, Nemtheanga always gives the listener something to think about, and "How It Ends" is no different. Latest single, the moody, desperate "Pilgrimage To The World‘s End," was inspired partly by the stories of poor Irish convicts, sent to the world‘s end; figures like Ned Kelly who refused to accept the laws oppressing them and "who then rebelled and came to embody, through myth, resistance. This is an album of resistance," notes Nemtheanga, "’Pilgrimage To The World‘s End' started out being inspired by the travails of Irish people sent as convicts to Australia, but of course I folded that into a post 'Coffin Ships' narrative, poor people boarding boats to try and reach a new world to start over anew, how many went down the boats, endured sickness, death, never reached their destination. Then I began to really consider the plight of all people within that 19th century period who by famine, war, poverty tried to seek a new life; the oppressed and the downtrodden. So as Primordial always has a historical echo that should resonate with the modern day, we see the same thing, poor people clinging to boats trying to seek a new life, always at the behest of a small economic elite who profit from their ruin. This is the song of the war and famine torn refugee from all countries and nations..." More...

Primordial To Release New Album In September

Long-running, Dublin, Ireland-based Pagan metallers Primordial will release their tenth full-length, "How It Ends," on September 29th via Metal Blade Records.

Primordial has nothing to prove. Having lasted thirty-two years and now returning with their devastating new studio offering, the Irish band has made it clear they are a primal force who consistently lay it all on the line. The follow-up to 2018’s critically lauded "Exile Amongst The Ruins," "How It Ends" sees them delivering more of their seminal blend of Celtic and black metal, with an extra added urgency, and staring down the apocalypse.

"The title is a question - is this how it ends? How it all goes down: culture, language, history, society - humanity - who knows?," says vocalist A. A. Nemtheanga. "Regardless of who you are or were, you get one chance at all of this, and it’s asking is this the end of your town, state, nation? Myths, traditions, relationships, and I suppose it asks the question, who reacts, who rebels - how does it end now for them?"

Working alongside founding members Pól MacAmlaigh (bass) and Ciáran MacUilliam (guitar) and longtime drummer Simon O’Laoghaire, the band started writing in earnest in the Fall of 2022, having lit a fire under themselves to work hastily and productively. Primordial never plans out a record beforehand, letting them come together naturally, though Nemtheanga knew he wanted something with a bigger, more open sound, and something more aggressive, which is exactly what they achieved. "'How It Ends' is a very angry, defiant, visceral, and rebellious album, and as we worked it all began to take more shape and form itself. It may be the note we go out on but it will be a note of resistance, in musical terms. I think it’s also more metal! And more epic!" More...

Corvus Corax Releases Song With Primordial Singer

With their second single, the Middle-Irish "Na láma-sa" Corvus Corax show another fascinating facet of their metal project Corvus Corax "Era Metallum" and another exciting collaboration with guests from the metal scene.

The epic bagpipe melody is carried by slow, almost doomy guitar riffs from the fingers of Sami Yli-Sirniö (Kreator, Waltari) over the endless, moving landscape of Ireland and at the end, everything goes up in a goosebump causing a thunderstorm. The Middle-Irish lyrics, a requiem from the 10th century, could not be interpreted more fittingly by any guest than Alan Nemtheanga A., who with his band Primordial is widely acclaimed as an icon of "Celtic Metal". The Irish metal singer gladly accepted the challenge to interpret the song in the language of his ancestors. In doing so, he draws an ingenious bow between the music's inherent epicness and a skillfully applied vocal rawness, which gives the work a new and even more deeply digging into the listener's stomach.

Alan sums up the successful collaboration, "It was a really interesting thing to do. Putting my voice over the music of Corvus Corax felt like a pretty good bond!" From Corvus Corax's perspective, too, the fusion of Alan's vocals and his musical background with what is probably the most atmospherically dense "Era Metallum" piece fits like a glove. Sláinte, Alan!

The album "Corvus Corax Era Metallum" will be released on June 24, 2022, as a Limited Edition Double CD and digitally. The vinyl version will be available in stores from September 21, 2022. More...

Primordial Wields Lightning Over London

The Islington Assembly Hall in North London is quite an interesting little place. Standing for almost a hundred years, the venue has hosted everything from community meetings to dances to tea parties and now hosts a number of live shows throughout the year. Amusingly for a venue with such innocent events taking place in its history and with the motto "Deus per Omnia" above the stage, it's become a great place to witness black metal, having hosted such bands as Rotting Christ, 1349 and Moonspell. This past Sunday, another of black/pagan metal's most beloved bands took to the stage, as Primordial brought their "Heathen Crusade" tour back to the English capital, four years on from their last visit.

Opening the show was Luxembourgish dark folk band Rome, an outlet for musician Jérôme Reuter, which to date has released fourteen albums. While there's very little to say with regards to stage presence, which features Jérôme along with a drummer (possibly Patrick Damiani) simply performing the songs, saying "thanks" now and then and moving on, there's definitely something to their music. It should be made clear that Rome isn't a metal band, they're more in line with dark folk music, which served as a fine opener for the night's lineup. An interesting listen, which provided enough intrigue to stave off the boredom many metal fans can feel when confronted with something they can't headbang to. More...

Primordial vocalist A.A. Nemtheanga comments: "Let's sing another song, this one has grown old and bitter. It seems like another lifetime ago since we announced the third Heathen Crusade, a lot has happened since then but it looks like finally the tour will happen, we welcome Swallow the Sun to the bill and alter the name slightly to Crusade to Doomsday which seems more and more apt with every passing day, all original tickets are still valid, for as long as the world exists let's gather and sing Every Empire Falls! Diamond Oz: My Top Five Albums Of 2018

Eagle eyed readers may have noticed that last year, Metal Underground didn't have our annual Best Of awards. While we unfortunately won't be having one this year either, we don't want to miss out on telling you about some of our favourites of 2018. So with this in mind, here's one Limey's opinions on who released the best albums this year, who rocked hardest live and what I'm most looking forward to in 2019. Why not start proceedings off with...

Best Live Band

I've been absolutely spoiled this year quite frankly. Beginning the year with an awesome co-headlining show from Rage and Firewind and almost capping it off with the Headbanger's Ball tour, which was comprised of Exodus, Sodom, Death Angel and Suicidal Angels, as well as attending the Bloodstock Open Air festival and 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise, it's been a great year for gigs. I've seen some truly phenomenal sets this year, and choosing just one band was difficult, especially given that I've seen Voivod three times this year and they were outstanding every single time. Other special mentions go to Mantar, Judas Priest, Primordial and Skindred, the last of which I've often stated are the best live band I've ever seen. However this year my choice is...

Melechesh

It's been twenty two years since Jerusalem black metal veterans released their debut full length, "As Jerusalem Burns..." and they've continued to just get better and better. Melechesh are a band which can deliver on big festival stages and intimate club shows with a mix of darkness, enigma, great stage presence and most importantly, great music. Those who aren't necessarily fans of their studio work should really give them a go in a live setting because you're almost guaranteed to come away as fans. The seamless performances of such intricate music is stunning but most of all, Melechesh are incredibly fun live, without being corny. Frontman Ashmedi knows he doesn't have to give the "Are you ready to party!?" shtick, or pretend to have arrived straight from Hell, he just has to be Ashmedi... And Ashmedi is fucking badass! Primordial Emerges As Legends Amongst Ruins

How many sub-genres can one band be labelled with? Over the course of twenty six years, Primordial has been called black metal, pagan metal, celtic metal, doom metal and pretty much everything else, but whatever the case, Primordial are metal to the very core and know how to put on a show to remember. Having just released their ninth studio album, "Exile Amongst The Ruins," the sons of Skerries are back on the road and bring with them some very unique guests.

Opening the bill was German black metal outfit Der Weg Einer Freiheit (loosely translated: The Way Of Freedom,) who possess a seriously abrasive sound. Extremity is very much of the menu this evening at the Islington Assembly Hall and not everyone was sure what to make of the Bavarian quartet. Those who enjoy their metal very fast and miserable will enjoy what Der Weg Einer Freiheit has to offer, providing a real sonic assault reminiscent of black metal flag carriers Mayhem. They were perhaps the most straight forward of the three bands tonight, which is no insult given who they're sharing the stage with, but for that reason, those who weren't blown away early in their set wouldn't have changed their mind later on. All in all, Der Weg Einer Freiheit aren't for everyone, but when was black metal ever meant to be? More...
